This was so touching. The image of Valentino after he fell over. That smile. Incredible. I will never forgive Pia Zadora for destroying Pickfair. Thank you for sharing. :)
Sorry, I have to disagree with you about her talent.. I absolutely agree with you about her earlier talent at the very beginning when she was trying to be a Rock Star like other no talented singers Britney Spears etc. However, later in the 1980's and 1990's(after many years of serious and absolute voice study and lessons) she surprised everyone with new albums with the London philharmonic orchestra! Here she sang pop standards and torch songs. She sounded like Liza Minnelli, Eydie Gorme' and other talented singers. She was also excellent when she appeared in the movie "Naked Gun" part 2.
Yes, when she is married to a elderly millionaire and they both have no culture, no class or intelligence whatsoever! So very sad about what they both did to this historical landmark. Money can never ever buy class and/or culture. Class is what you are born with while culture is only learned from years of appreciation and experience. @@trudygreer2491
When I asked Pia about the house, she replied that they were doing some "renovations." I would've thought that someone in the business would've been more respectfuil of that historic house. Shame!
My Grandparents visited LA in the late 30's and I have photos of Pickfair that they took. I can just imagine them, living in the Midwest, coming out to CA doing the tourist thing, and seeing this magnificent home. In those days you could just walk right up to the property. This was a lovely video, thank you, and I still get so angry every time knowing the house was destroyed.
I used to be the guy who took care of the indoor plants when Pickfair was owned by Jerry Buss - he was so kind, let me wander around for hours, told me where the secret rooms were...what an astonishing place. Buss spoke of "sitting in history" -on his bed with his toupee in his hand...is there still time to send Pia Zadora to Siberia?
Thank you for sharing such a wonderful, personal story. How great it would be to have gone through the house before Pia's wrecking ball destroyed Hollywood history. In Sept 2023 she was quoted about it, and she said the following: “I never wanted Pickfair. My husband Meshulam wanted to leave me this legacy, but my kids swore to me there were ghosts. And there were termites. I wouldn’t tent it because I didn’t want the chemicals. So someone said, ‘Tear it down.’ Look, it was my house - suck it!"
@@WeNeverForget👏👏👏👏👏 First, thank you for sharing this wonderful article and secondly, thanks for the P.Z. quote which validate what I have been saying all along ... She intentionally demolished Pickfair, I used to live in Beverly Hills and I passed by the estate everyday as a teenager and hoped to one day own the house, but, she and her husband got to it first. I would not make the kind of money I needed to buy the property and save it for future generations to have a feeling of what it was like in the golden days. But, your great mini documentary will do just fine ! Thank you, again !
@@WeNeverForgetpia zadora is a lying sack. She tore it down out of rage because the Hollywood community did not accept her into their circles, rejected her wanting a career and totally ignored and laughed at her. She was constantly the butt of jokes.
@@SunsetBoulevard111 It was very much still Pickfair; Mr. Buss loved that he was in such a historic home. Lots of old stuff, - but not aging or tacky. Well-preserved. I'd walk down to the pool house and the ghosts were with me all the way...I only went a few times but my co-worker was clueless about the place and he'd leave me there for hours...and swing by for me on his way back to the office. Beautiful memories of the passed. I'm Cuban American, my parents arrived in the 1960s as political refugees to Los Angeles. My dad found a job with a a man who did Upholstery for the stars. It was in Los Felix blvd back then he met alot of stars from the past, they only did antique furniture. Thank you for the kind comment. Here is the list of people at the table. Its like a "who's who" of the Silent era in Hollywood. Left to right: Natalie Talmadge, William S. Hart, Norma Talmadge, Hiram Abbrams, Douglas Fairbanks, Mrs. Talmadge, Allan Forrest (standing), Buster Keaton, James McFarlan (standiing), Mary Pickford, Charles Chaplin, Charlotte Pickford, Joseph Schenk, Natacha Rambova, Rudolph Valentino, Connie Talmadge, John W. Considine, Lottie Pickford. The only 2 I dont know, are the man next to Lottie and the man to the right of Valentino.
Sorry to put in a second comment, I don't know if that's bad UA-cam manners, but I looked at your site and saw your devotion to Valentino. I just wanted to mention that I think you did such a good job it would be so worthwhile to see you expand and give this treatment to other stars of the era.
20 years ago, I staged our Hollywood Underground annual dinner in the Cathedral Mausoleum. Valentino's crypt and stained-glass window were illuminated by tealights. :-)
I remember you! I was a guest speaker at the dinner/event. I did a short slide presentation of Valentino's death in New York and his return for burial in Los Angeles. My book Valentino Forever had just come out. It was a fun evening to be there at night time. Thank you for your comment Harry!
Those cherubs are absolutely beautiful! I love the gate and I wonder if there is any part of the pond left. It’s wonderful the new builders left those columns and cherubs. 😊❤
I wish we had a legend to show us who all the individuals at the "stately dinner" are. I believe I recognize William S. Hart, Douglas, Mary, Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin and Valentino, but my old eyes are not what they used to be, and I cannot identify any of the others. No doubt some were spouses of those in the photo. It might take some research to see if the information is found in a book somewhere. Thanks for the very interesting video, and the music is absolutely OUTSTANDING!
this was depressing. and after reading rex ingrams spiteful words on valentinos death i can only conclude he deserved better. i will never understand that vile ny funeral. open casket. days of viewing, undertakercomments, people grabbing for hair... should never have been allowed
His body was in the basement. That was a wax head on a mannequin. They feared the crowds outside would go crazy and attempt to take the body so they switched it with a fake
I thought this was particularly well done with all the different pictures explained. I never knew that Valentino had a book of poetry. In anticipation of the sound era, he had recorded a couple of songs, and you can find them on UA-cam. I don't know what exactly happened to Pickfair and why it was demolished, except that the commentators are saying that Pia Zadora is to blame. It does look lovely and should have been preserved the way it was when Doug and Mary owned it.
Pickfair was no architectural gem and rambled like an undisciplined cattle herd. However, it WAS iconic and a part of the overblown era of Hollywood we shall never see again. I mourn its loss!
Valentino has had any number of films made about him, and dozens of books written about him. Fairbanks and Pickford are all but forgotten, except by a relative handful of 1920s film fans.
Pia had no choice but to tear Pickford down, she tried restoring it but it was horribly haunted and her children were nightly confronted by screaming and laughing ghosts. While I mourn the loss of Pickfair too, it had to go.
Did previous owners have these problems? Did Pia practice anything occult like Ouija boards or the like while she was there? If there were no incidents before, there is the possibility that she brought something in with her.
This was so touching. The image of Valentino after he fell over. That smile. Incredible. I will never forgive Pia Zadora for destroying Pickfair. Thank you for sharing. :)

Rudy was married...
She was a set and costume designer
But her biggest role was that of "A Beard for Rudy"
He passed away to early. There was a rumor that Valentino was poisoned.
They do say he had been feeling unwell but put off going to the doc ... how heartbreaking to think had he gone earlier he might not have died.
The gates worth more than the new mansion?!
😍😢
Tempus fugit!

That is an utterly ridiculous thing to post. She had a choice not to demolish this place. She has no respect for history.
Did previous owners have these problems? Did Pia practice anything occult like Ouija boards or the like while she was there? If there were no incidents before, there is the possibility that she brought something in with her.
Guessing 'Marebanks' didn't work? Surely 'Dougpick' or 'PickDoug' was a thought 🤔...
Once Pia Zadora got hold of it, perhaps it should have been renamed "Pigfair" . . .
