Born and raised in Chicago, moved away a decade or so ago. I was never a Portillo's fan while living there, I would always just go to a neighborhood place and grab one.
That being said, once you move away Portillo's tends to be one of the few places that you can get a taste of home and it not be butchered beyond belief.

I just came back from visiting Chicago for the first time. I never understood the appeal of the Chicago hotdog with all those ingredients, but after taking a bite, I have converted.
I was flying from Youngstown Ohio via Chicago O’hare to San Diego on my way from home leave to my Navy A school training. Had my first Chicago dog from an airport concession. Been a fan ever since.

I can not believe Jimmy's Red Hot was not on the list. They have been serving up their iconic Chicago Style hotdogs for over 69 years. They operated out of the same building, on the west side of Chicago, since I was just a little boy. Talking about "got it down to a science", Jimmy's perfected their delicious dogs.

Problem is most modern tomatoes are flavorless. If you get a vine ripened tomato in season and just sprinkle some salt and eat, you'll know why it's one of the most important vegetable.
Which is also why when I use it in a cooked dish, I prefer unsalted canned tomatoes.

I don't work there but I tried to get hired there years ago. but I had an eye appointment that couldn't be rescheduled. when I called back to reschedule. she never answered my call. but their whole entire menu is definitely 😋 last week I had your Polish sausage, onion rings & big beef . The chopped salad and a Santa Fe 🥗 😋 so are the burgers & ribs.

Jimmy's hot dogs at Grand and Pulaski are my favorites, every time I visit my old home town.
As a kid, I lived 2 blocks away, and I'd take a walk over there with the family at least once a week. For me, it don't get better than Jimmy's

All three look and sound completely amazing.
And honestly, you can't go wrong with any of these choices. I will say that Portillos are closer to a chain and make way more food than just hotdogs. Superdawg is just amazing!
That's true Portillos has other foods, but they were rating hotdogs because true Chicagoans are proud of the iconic Chicago style hotdog.

For a Chicago dog you need a boiled all beef hotdog in a steamed popyseed bun with yellow mustard, sweet green pickle relish, white onion, tomato wedges, pickle spear, sport peppers, and celery salt. Nothing else can be called a Chicago dog. The one ingredient you can skip is the tomato but even then it is modified.
Boiled hot dogs are gross. Need char from either a flat top grill or a flame grill or they are just awful

Natural casing weiners are better cooked in water. Grilled, the casing is awful. Without the casing, you are correct.

If you don't like celery salt. You shouldn't be judging Chicago style dogs.
Soul- never had a Chicago Hotdog (except vicariously here) and it could be I've gone overboard with celery salt in other contexts but I just find it kind of overpowering. But I am going to visit Chicago again one day and focus on these Chicago style hotdogs (and a lot of other unique cuisine that city has to offer) and maybe be convinced!

If the tomato doesn't have flavour, it's probably because it's out of season and poorly grown for quantity, not quality.
This is probably going to be the case with the vast majority of fast food style tomatoes (I'm looking at you Subway). You can tell by how pale they are, and yeah, those aren't enjoyable tomatoes. No flavor.
Sunset farms doesn’t have that problem due to their greenhouse method
When they were saying tomatoes add nothing to a burger I was thinking how tomato is one of my favorite parts of a cheeseburger.
Specifically why I don’t eat anything with fresh tomato’s out of season in NJ. You can absolutely tell the difference between in season, and out of season tomato’s.

I have a Portillos near where I live in Arizona... True story... Had a roommate once, all of his family lived in Chicago so he was really excited to go back home (he hadn't been there since a child) and try, "genuine hot dogs" as he put it. His brother was amping him up before his trip out there... Two weeks later when he comes back he tells me how they took him straight to Portillos, failing to remember he had one within a few miles of him.

When I lived there, I ate at Portillos, which had great BBQ ribs.
I'd eat at any of the 3 joints any time. My faves are, Superdawg, Portillo, and then Gene and Jude's. Portillo is good, in fact probably my overall fave due to how many other delectable items you can buy while at a Portillo location. Supedawg and Gene and Judes are nostalgic as all get out in addition to serving up super tasty dogs.

Born right near super dawg. Basically any Chicago area restaurant has a good dog . Super Dawg, has a very good menu and try the burgers with cheese. Delicious.

Superdawg is definitely the best hot dog. There’s something about the taste of the hot dog that makes it delicious and it’s filling, it’s not skinny. I could pick it out in a line if hot dogs by taste. The pickle too is delicious and snappy.
I live three blocks from Superdawg, and you guys are right; best hot dog in Chicago. I sometimes take it for granted how spoiled I am to be so close.
One thing I would point out though, is that Portillo’s is known for a lot more than just their hot dogs. I never go to Portillos for a hot dog. Standard go-to at Portillos is an Italian beef(another Chicago institution), with sweet and hot peppers, and a chocolate cake shake on the side.
