How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a UA-cam channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin. Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like. These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.
Well that's an open and shut video🙄😁 looking good you've fairly had a tidy up and getting organised for you cattle this winter well done. Ps I do quite like the sort catch up videos. 👍Stay safe 🏴 👌
Well this is great. Erik installed all our gates and all no longer latch properly after a few years, lol. Two he cemented, one he didn't. The one he didn't is sagging badly 🙁.
Wow, Our Holstein deer would bound that twice just to say they did it! Nice gates, 👍
I didnt know the trick on the top arm keeping the gate from pulling upward
I build a gate "jig" two scrap 2x4" pieces drilled on drill press to the same size hole as my auger bit and hinges, then screwed to a longer 2x4. I move the scraps into position, and screw the entire rig to the post, and level and plumb it. Then just drill through the post, both holes are sure to be plum, level, and square to each other it you don't right.
Hey Ryan!! Cattle lot looks great.
Is their a heavier tubing you can get in the gates we use much heavier gates in Ireland unless for sheep I know by the wrinkles in the bend on the tubing they aren’t heavy. We have gypsies go around to farmers selling gates like that many years ago when farmers complained about the weight they came back with sand in some of the tubing
Really nice Gated community.
If you add a screw in hinge on the post opposite the gate is hinged on, you can lift up on the gate and let the gate sit on this hinge to reduce the stress on the post when the gate isn't being used. It'll help keep the gates from sagging over the years.
That’s a good tip, I usually wrap the chain so it is supporting the weigh on the other end but that would be better!
This is a good idea. I have also used angle iron welded or screwed to the post as a gate rest. You can even cut the angle a bit at the end and bend the bottom part down a bit to accept the gate easier. This allows for a ramp of sorts for the gate to ride up on. This is good for long heavy gates.
That or use an old concrete block, so the gate sits on the block when it's closed... OL J R :)
i had to re-hang all the gates at the horse ranch i used to work, dumbasses hung them all with the hinges facing up and the horses would knock them off and get loose, so they tied ropes onto them lol. fixed all that. way better
Good corrals and thought out lanes and gates is worth it's weigh in at least copper. I have worked cows in a lot less and it prolongs your sanity to have good facility. Nice job.
Hey it’s shaping up real nice for working that beef
I saw the title, : How to Hang Gates"
My grandfather's voice started in my head within seconds.
The standard farm gate is/was 14 feet. Why?
Because 14 1/2 feet is one rod. The distance between posts. ( Wood post/ grid wire system ) And Grandpa could call distance in rods and chains.
Which is the measuring system old school fencing distances are based on. Also the survey system used for pretty much the entirety of North America.
Some utterly useless trivia for ya.
But hang that gate straight and true. Because if you don't, you will never hear the end of it from..... someone....
P.S. When you panned around at the end,, that was the best shot showing me what you are going for there.
Nice small scale feedlot. It makes sense now, you guys have been working towards it for a few years now I guess? Excellent use of rolling terrain/mixed crop framing area.
How many feet does a rod contain?
16.5 feet
rod, old English measure of distance equal to 16.5 feet (5.029 metres), with variations from 9 to 28 feet (2.743 to 8.534 metres) also being used. It was also called a perch or pole.
Ryan, I was so glad that I "hung" around to watch your fence and gate build.
The farm is starting to look a whole hell of a lot better since that storm blew thru and did all that destruction around your place. Once you work out some kind of roof for what's left of your barn, the cows should be good and dry this winter
. By the way, was that your Mother we saw in your video helping out with the hanging of the gates? Always nice to see that you include all your family in your videos.
I want to take this time to wish you and all of yours a Verry Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Thanks Rick! That was Mom, she doesn’t always like when the camera points her way!
Lol Travis just packing around rocket lol
I hope you and your family and your girlfriend have a nice christmas and a happy new year
Why did you place the lumber on the outside of the fence? Are you worried as the fence ages the cattle pushing on it and pushing the nails out?
@@johnhaas2523 the section leading to the barn towards the house is not. Rewatch the video. I understand the stuff in the center.
That’s where we load out and the direction it gets most of the abuse from.
Great Vlog, Good Job! thanks for explaining hanging a gate in simple terms with all the reasons you do what you do, Thanks
Those are strong fences, good to see everyone helping. Family farms are the only way to make a living anymore. What is the puppies name?
Informative video cow lot looks really good
Keep up the great work the vids are great
Good to see nice gates, well hung.🐄🐂
Yard sure looks great. On gates away from the yard, many install with top hinge down to prevent theft. From years of being a utube fan, Sawmill uploads are very popular. For around $6,000.00. you are making your own fence boards and cattle building lumber. All should buy in. If you do, also consider a solar kiln. Turns oak at .70 a bf to $2.80 bf in value. At 300 bf per hour, that mill would pay for itself in the first year and then some. The channel revenues are a bonus. Wess is dusting his mill off. If you use cement piers like his building recent video, you don't need treated posts. They ran 3 2x6 boards from the bracket on top of the pier. Build a few molds and make your own pieres also. The more you save, the more you can build. Travis would be wise to buy the mill and let his channel blow up with your fans support. You build the kiln. After watching an old pure living for life upload, with delivered logs he saved a fortune. He easily produces over $1,000.00 a day on a wood mizer lt15. Two men. R1
Barter with the truss builder. They send trusses, back haul lumber to make more. Ask concrete company, electrician. Remember every flat bed delivery could be a barter back haul if you make the call.
Thank you for sharing.
Good stuff Ryan, the farm yard is looking smart with the revamp:):)
… Ryan great video on hanging gates… My wife has already use that information for making her pie crusts…
I didn't know it was possible to not hang a gate
I'm actually really glad you did a video on this because I've been wondering how you get you're gates to move so easily. I definately agree, this makes alot more sense and would be worth the time/money for something so simple but makes working that much safer and easier. Thanks for all the updates to the cattle lot, it's looking really great!
Pat yourself on back, Ryan. Sure making it less stress/hassle of cattle management ya got there.
Enjoyed these videos. Was a good mix up would be interested in more in the future. Maybe some future arrowquip???
Hey Ryan lot looks great
We replaced several gates this year. I’m shopped around and really disappointed in the quality of today’s gates. They are so flimsy and the tubing is so thin. Ended up buying several custom made one for not a lot more than at the farm supply stores.
That’s what we did too for the gates at Rockville!
Who is the new puppie
Tallie!
Great job Ryan on the lots. Looks top of the line. Hope everyone can enjoy Christmas.
I like it ride done a good job man that pants looks really really nice man excellent job for sure hope it works out great for you have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year my friend
Thanks for the video. What’s you’re recommendation to prevent theft if your gate is near a public road??
Good shit bro!!
And good gate, fences make good neighbors.. BUT... if you have some land out far away from us the gates hangers hinged turned up on bottom and down on the top hinge doesn't make it easy for a dirt bag coming to steal a gate by just opening and lift it off the hinges.. make it hard for them, they don't take that opportunity to steal it! Love your shows... from a Colorado country boy. .
Merry Christmas Ryan! May you and your family be safe and blessed
Thanks Jeff have a great Christmas!
Good videos always they are
👍👍
👍
Damn fine job accomplished there pal. 🤜🇬🇧🇺🇸
Nice!
Love the vids
Great video Ryan you guys did a good job on the gates hopefully no critters get out lol 😆 thumbs up and shared
4 th
You really should use washer on both sides of the hinge bolts. You can get the bolts a lot tighter and not have them dig in the post as much. So if you need to come back and relevel the gate at a later date.
Both sides did have a washer, I just failed to mention it
Inverting the hinges also make it harder for thieving little twits going off with them as does a plate or washer welded to the hinge or a cold chisel buried into the post above it also helps it disappearing on a flat bed transit.
👍
What is the name of the new furball?
Great video new fence is looking good
Looks good. One day you’ll get a new barn and really be set
you guys should make some gate jacks !
Hello
Hi
You have a very nice lot now😉👍
Whos puppy ? Whet is the name?
Hey Ryan thanks for the information great looking lot.👍
Interesting to see farmers building their herds/feeder operations while others speak derisively about “back when we had [livestock]”
sadly the dark times are coming soon.
To get a gate perfect you need to swing it gently and it supposed to stop in the middle
Keep up the good work.
Very nice
Looking good Ryan
very nice!
Cool video
👍👏👏👌👌
Looks well built and a lot safer.
