Great job. The amount of torque that 12' gate puts on that post is enormous. Good bracing and support. I never thought about greasing my gates, guess im doing that this weekend.
Just a suggestion from someone who has built many fences using hog panels (utility panels..... whatever you call them in your neck of the woods) consider using a bolt cutter to cut the panels to size instead of a peanut grinder, quicker and quieter. Nice work, your place looks amazing!
I Love the outtakes at the end. Please do more. Great project, it's very important to separate your small farm from that busy road. Now any wandering animal or human won't be able to casually go in the wrong place.
@@leegreer Yes, that's what it's called and most people rent them unless you do a lot of concrete work. They're commonly used to eliminate air pockets when pouring foundations.
I loved watching this one. Thanks, the out takes at the end cracked me up. You have a beautiful place there Anne thanks to all your efforts and sore muscles. Take care.
Youre awesome!! I'll definitely be watching more of your videos. I just bought a 2 acre country property in Oregon that needs a lot of work and im aspiring to do more myself. My husband bought me my own set of tools so I feel empowered to go for it when he's not available to help. Whoohoo!
Would love to see some more blacksmithing videos, it seems every where I look there are construction and gardening vids but short of dedicated blacksmith channels, none are coming out.
I put out a smithing video two weeks ago. I’ve just finished my blacksmithing shop, and more are coming, but patience is a virtue, I’ve kind of got a lot going on around here ;)
i've set some fence post in my time and then I found red bag quickcrete, no mixing just pour in the hole and add water. Much easier and haven't had any issues with it.
New sub. , found you through Ashley H. Saw the video of the two of you turning willow bowls. Your smile ,happy personality & hard working attitude brought me here. You did an amazing job with this project, well done! Really enjoy your videos, thank you ✨
Very nice job. If I could make one suggestion before bolting a post to your home predrill the holes and fill with caulking or mastic. Much less likely to get water intrusion/ dry rot.
Good info. It would have been really helpful to hear about some of the measurements and other decisions. Also would have been neat to see more detail on mounting the gate with one hinge pin pointing down.
Nah, everyone needs to make measurement decisions based on their own needs. This project had arbitrary measurements based on the materials we had available. Aside from the concrete, everything we used was recycled, so what was helpful for me wouldn’t be helpful for the next person.
A little tack weld on the nut will make it really hard to remove it from the bolt. Carriage bolts and nuts aren’t too pricey to replace when you need to cut it off to take the gate off. Still not Ft Knox, but you also aren’t securing gold bars either.
Looks great! The AG supply store gate doesn't look that bad. Looks true "farmy" since most farmers wouldn't commit time or effort to a custom fabrication anyway. My .02¢ - when you fabricate your new metal gate, consider also making (or just buying) some timber gusset plates for the hinged-end posts and crossbraces. Even with Timberloks the joints can open because of how much weight is cantilevered out as the wood dries.
Wouldnt staggering or offsetting hinges cause the gate to open or close when you let go? I also saw in colonial Williamsburg VA a second pole on one side with attached weight to pull gate closed.
If you're worried about people possibly removing the gate by getting to the nuts on the back side you could probably just weld the hinge piece to the gate once adjusted and in it's final position. Just a thought.....
what do where different countries are have to do with hanging a gate lol nice blooper reel great job though I am a huge dog lover btw as well as an aspiring small scale wood worker small scale as I am a wheelchair user
Hey now, no jokes about Seattle weather. It's funny how people from other states think it rains all the time and then, if they visit ... Oh the countryside is so green." Yeah, thanks to the rain, how is your fried yard in the Midwest? Nice work on the gate. I grew up there but left in 79. Not impressed by what's happened since but it's nice to see a little urban hobby farm.
Farm Gate hinges are a little different than door hinges, the gate has two round fittings (called gudgeons) that hang on little L shaped brackets (called pintles) that actually screw into the wooden posts. Together, they’re called “hook and eye hinges” if you’d like to google a picture of them which will make what I’m saying make more sense ;)
Heya Anne.. I installed a gate very similar to yours though its only a 10ft. We used 8' rounded logs which are very plumb and we used the drill through bolts instead of the Jbolts. Even with the gate completely level and plumb.. it still wants to swing open. We have tried adjusting the hinges to change the angle of the gate so that it leans back and we have tried adjusting the bolts so the gate leans to far down or up. No matter what level or plumb position the gate is in it still swings on its own in the same direction. Are we missing a basic concept here? The gate does not sag and the post stays very firm.
Did you raise the grade in the corner of the fence to slow the puppies and other critters from going under the fence? Good looking install either way, but critters will find any gap they can fit through/under even of it takes a little digging.
@@AnneofAllTrades that's great. I have seen so many people forget the bottom until their animals are out and all over the neighborhood. I knew you were smart, but even smart people forget little details like that sometimes. Glad you thought of it, and flipping the top hinge pivot as well.
And actually, since I finished the video a few weeks ago, we’ve also swapped out the hinge hardware to make leveling easier and put in a new kind of latch. I’ve got a similar build video coming out in a few weeks and I’ll cover that swap out in it.
Dang! You are one strong young woman! Great build!
I was going to come down and remove your gate bolts when you weren't looking, but now you put the nuts on the inside and made it so hard!
Foiled again!
Great job. The amount of torque that 12' gate puts on that post is enormous. Good bracing and support. I never thought about greasing my gates, guess im doing that this weekend.
That really adds a lot to the esthetics, the entire area is transformed great job, and outtakes too
Thanks so much! Yeah it makes a huge difference!!
You are doing a magnificent job, young lady!
I would love a second third hand! Also a first third hand! The fence is looking great and a safe Rigby Puppy is a happy Rigby Puppy!
Good to see you take the time to mix the concrete the right way instead of just pouring it in the hole.
Just a suggestion from someone who has built many fences using hog panels (utility panels..... whatever you call them in your neck of the woods) consider using a bolt cutter to cut the panels to size instead of a peanut grinder, quicker and quieter. Nice work, your place looks amazing!
Getting electric bolt cutters absolutely changed the way I fence!

Your very welcome Anne! Sunny days are the best :) Have a wonderful weekend!😎
Looks great Annabelle, as usual:)
Love the outtakes and the cat!!!
Awesome work Anne! 😃👍🏻👊🏻
Very nice! Also like the use of the concrete vibrator. It helps compact the larger aggregate against the lower part of the post.
I was wondering what that was. Do they really call it a concrete vibrator? Are they available at home improvement stores?

Great Job Anne, I bet your partner love's you !!!! xx Brian UK .
He is a good man and I love him too ;)
Anne, you could put a caster on the end of the gate to roll as you open n close the gate and will take the weight off the hinges
That would be great but unfortunately the drop from the grade of the hill doesn’t allow it. Strong hinges will hold it ;)
oh my gosh when you said you lived in Seattle I got excited lol, I live outside of seattle in Oly.

If you're worried about people possibly removing the gate by getting to the nuts on the back side you could probably just weld the hinge piece to the gate once adjusted and in it's final position. Just a thought.....
I thought diagonals from the gate post to the tie post only work in that orentation when under tension.
The fence panels are so rigid it basically acts like a turnbuckle and high tensile wire
what do where different countries are have to do with hanging a gate lol nice blooper reel great job though I am a huge dog lover btw as well as an aspiring small scale wood worker small scale as I am a wheelchair user
Make sure you put gravel at the bottom of post .. before you pour concrete... it will allow for water drainage 👍😊
How high can Rigby jump? That opening at the top of the gate looks very exciting........Yard is looking super awesome Anne,
He can’t even jump onto the couch to snuggle, he has to be lifted on, so I think we are safe with the gate haha
