In this scene, Taylor seems to already know he is on Earth before ever seeing the Statue of Liberty. It sure was obvious to me as a kid that the time frame was relatively near-future Earth.

I don't think Taylor actually pieced it all together in his mind until he stumbles upon the remains of the Statue of Liberty. Ultimately, the "twist" was intended for the audience not for Taylor himself. The end also explains why this planet has both humans and apes on it. Both a great twist and a great explanation at the same time.
A couple of dead give aways that they were back on earth. The apes speaking English (Common language that transcends the universe itself across 14 billion light years of galaxies and space!). The moon at night looking exactly the same as earths moon. The position of the planet being in the exact same relative location as earth within our galaxy. These three looming truths aside, yeah, they had no idea they we on earth especially being astronauts and all!
I love how after Cornelius reads the "yea, he will murder his brother..." verse, the scene focuses on Taylor who seems to remember the "man makes war on his brother" speech HE said at the beginning of the movie.
That's one of the many great ironies of this movie. Taylor is a cynic, with great disdain towards humanity to the point he makes light of the thought of their possible extinction. And yet, here he becomes humanities greatest Defender. Masterful classic writing.
The "Man kills for sport" line stands out to me given that in the beginning of the film we saw apes killing humans for what appears to be sport. Zauis is right that humans are capable of awful things, something even the main character said so himself at the start, but we see the apes aren't that different from humans in this regard either.
The apes are as intelligent as humans so as we have seen they are just as bad as we are. This is something the mangas HunterXHunter and The Promised Neverland dealt with when a species of monsters gained human level intelligence. The monsters being as smart as humans meant they can be as kind as humanity, but as just as cruel. In a sense, Zauis' bigotry is an example of the worst humanity is capable of as a species. The worst acts of humanity are those carried out under the pretense of doing the right thing.
Plenty of animals kill for sport, too. Not just man. Watch some UA-cam videos where *unprovoked* cats, lions, hippos, elephants, etc, will attack and kill another animals for fun. To say man is alone is this is to admit that man is not an animal. No, we're all on this planet together, with equal mentalities.

Since this movie came out, it has come to light that in terms of aggression on impulse, chimpanzees are actually more violent than humans are, and they are a species that wages war. Playing devil's advocate, the depiction of ape society is based on dated information. When this movie was made, gorillas were assumed to be violent animals.
As a kid, I hated Zaius and thought he was the bad guy, but now I have much more respect for the character -- the guy was trying to protect the future of his people.
He was also keeping the planet alive. As a man of almost 40 who grew up watching this masterpiece, it breaks my heart to admit how accurate the part is about "he will make a desert of his home and of your home". Man has become the real cancer to this wonderful planet.
Taylor starts the film with the same assessment of humanity (before he goes into suspended animation). After re-gaining his freedom and proving that man was the dominant species before the apes were, now he has all of his worst assessment of humanity confirmed by the scroll.
Numinous20111 isn’t that funny when he criticizes humans at the beginning but throughout the movie he is, the man, who believes he is more dominant than the apes and will do anything to justify that which includes war against the apes. Just revalidating his first monologue, ignorantly, doesn’t realize he is part of the problem as well.
Only the apes were no better. In fact, in some ways they were worse. Repressing their own society so they could never advance to the level of mankind. Also they did not treat what remained of mankind with respect and kindness. They put them in cages and at at best treated like like garbage.
Taylor's cynicism of man is validated by the end of the movie. While criticizing man, I don't believe that Taylor ever put himself above the evils of man and was well aware he was part of that evil as well.
I like how the ending in the sequel “beneath the planet of the apes” is pretty much the exact nightmare that Dr Zaius was trying to prevent in this film.

I get the feeling that years before, Dr. Zaius himself went into the Forbidden Zone and discovered the wrecked Statue of Liberty, and thus the truth of his world. If so, he was indeed the Guardian of the Terrible Secret and had every reason to be utterly terrified of Taylor. That supposition, for me, is what makes the final scene in the camp make particular sense: "Lieutenant, have your troops bring explosives. We are going to seal up the entrance to the cave forever. And you, Cornelius, will stand trial for heresy. Take him away." "But... the doll!" "In a few minutes there will be no doll. There can't be. I'm sorry." "Dr. Zaius, this is inexcusable! Why must knowledge stand still?!? What about the future?" "I may have just saved it for you." "But what will he find out there, Doctor?" "His destiny." Dr. Zaius definitely knew. He knew what Taylor was going to find.
He knew but there was a meaning behind his actions too that most missed. He made the same mistake so many before had of burying the truth and dooming his own people to repeating the same mistakes again. It was meant to be a lesson that unless you face the truth you're going to repeat the same mistakes.

The problem with secrets, is they tend to be discovered one way or another whether we want it or not. And if the others discover that secret? Well, it’s in their hands on whether it’d be reason for conflict or not. They say they are superior, yet they keep secrets like we do, enslave like we do, read and write, make weapons and use them against innocents, and say the reasoning for violence is to preserve our futures, and to torture is for science.
Such a great movie. Still maintains to be watchable nearly 60 years later. The costumes are just perfect IMO. No CGI or special effects and they still look great. Even the movement of the mouth isn't bad.
CGI for costumes is rare, very rare. No idea why you bring that up, it's stupid. The only examples I know of is Superman's cape and the Green Lantern costume. Just another comment in the vain of "old movies looked better because they didn't use CGI" while most people are totally ignorant watching stuff where they have no idea it's CGI because it's that good. They only notice bad CGI and think all CGI is bad.

I disagree. For the time the costumes were okay. But, even without CGI and only make-up we can do a much more convincing ape now. Look at the Marky-Mark remake. It's an awful movie. But, the costumes weren't CG and they looked much better than they did in this.

Saw it in a drive in with my family in ‘68. While most (but not all) went over my head, my father had a great respect for Charlton Heston and that was the only reason he watched this film. And I think in the end he gained a new respect for “outer space films” after watching this one.
I didn't watch this movie until I was an adult, after I'd seen it referenced a million times, with every possible surprise spoiled, explained, and parodied. It was still such a glorious work of art that not only did it withstand the test of time, the references did little to diminish it in any way, and it still held surprises that weren't spoiled. It's no wonder why everybody's still well aware of this old masterpiece.
I wish I could watch the movie without knowing about the twist ending that i grew up knowing about from various parodies, but like you said the movie as a whole is pretty amazing. Dr Zaius initially being seen as a cruel theocratic man-hating villain who doesn't wanna listen to the kind and caring chimpanzees, but at the end you learn that he's maybe the only ape who knows history and that is why he his fear of humans becomes more justifiable due to the destruction humans have caused and may one day do again (which he becomes even more right about in the sequel as well). And while the movie at the time was about nuclear holocause which isnt as much of a fear today as it was back then, it could still be replaced with the fear of accelerated climate change, deforestation and pollution, which are also human destructions of life on Earth that are more relevant today.
Seeing it in the theaters (or the drive-in) was pretty awesome. But the film is pretty spell binding, so even seeing it 50+ years later I still get a jolt out of the ending.

Not only greatest Sci-Fi movie but one of the greatest movies ever! The script, acting and directing is masterful and the film is just iconic! Not only is this movie entertaining it also makes you think. It is a critical study of man. The movie also took a big risk as it was completely different from anything that came before it. A movie about space and a planet full of talking apes - very different!
I love that Taylor always had some kind of counter or retort to anything Zaius says against him, but he is just slapped dumbstruck by this. He knows Zaius is right.
@@chadjcrase exactly, the rest of the series touches on that as well. The point of the Planet of the Apes series as I’ve always understood it, was the hypocrisy of the apes themselves. Just read Jane Goodall’s book about the Gombe Chimpanzee War. It’s also worth mentioning that a lion male will murder cubs in order to win mating opportunities with lionesses after he kills the rival male and claims his pride. An orca male in the Pacific Ocean just off the coast of British Columbia was once observed killing a calf so he could mate with its mother. Plus, how many herbivore males (deer, buffalo, hippos) fight to the death (or until one of them gives up) for mating opportunities or for territory? The 29th Scroll, 6th verse is wrong about man being alone among God’s primates being the only one that kills for sport, lust or greed. Humans are not alone among the primates or even the other animals that do that. What I think the series points out without saying is that where humans are alone among the animals is that we have the intelligence and the moral compass to change our behavior for the better. I highly doubt other apes will rise to where we are as they did in the films.

What makes us different is that humans are capable of changing for the better. Humans are capable of building great societies and technologies and we can develop systems of laws. Other animals can’t do that. And yes, some humans fall short but that’s how evolution works. Survival of the fittest. Natural selection is not limited to the species, it’s limited to individuals within populations of a species.
That's what makes him so brilliant as an antagonist, Maurice Evans' great acting aside. He's written with few flaws in his reasonings and is proven correct at the end of the day.

An interesting question. The apes have a very powerful and well organized military. They would not have this war machine strictly to fight dumb (Can't speak) humans so exactly who was this army created to fight and defend against? Either they have enemies the movie never expounded upon or they have fought ape against ape and if so then the pot would seem to be calling the kettle black.
The Planet of The Apes comics by Boom Studios actually offers a good explanation for this. Humans are not actually mindless feral beasts, they've just lost the ability to communicate but they can be taught sign language. Once they have a way to 'talk' to each other, they start to organise and begin to pose a threat to the apes. In one comic, they even started to arrange coordinated raids on the apes.
That's the point of the movie. It shows that no matter the species, intelligence and "civilization" really means that the dominant species would eventually become corrupt and wicked.
I actually remember reading one planet of the apes comic where the apes had to fight these malicious giant reptiles that resembled pterodactyls. It sounds a bit ridiculous but one can’t help but wonder what other animals evolved into great and terrible things after the downfall of man.
I'm wondering if this military wasn't primarily for killing mutants. Zaius mistakenly believes that Taylor is a mutant and tries to make a deal with him to give up the location of their base. But we don't actually get introduced to the mutants until the next movie. I wonder if that was an idea that was in the original script but got cut for time or money reasons.

This movie was maybe the first one I was really obsessed with as a kid. I remember thinking how Zaius really confirmed all of my skepticism of political and religious authority figures, but was also totally right. Maybe one of the first time I really had to confront moral ambiguity in a thoughtful way.

I was also fascinated by the message in this movie. As a kid I was conflicted because naturally I wanted to side with Taylor but it wasn't easy and clear cut why as events unfold.

When dr. Zaius asks Taylor why didn't man survive, he is not asking because he does not know, he is asking because he wants to see if Taylor is willing to admit to himself the answer he fears and doesn't admit it until the end scene. Dr. Zaius knew the real answer the whole time, that's why he has such hatred of humans and sees them only as beasts. In his lifetime the humans are primitive, but Dr. Zaius knows the potential of what damage humans can do.
Sure, but really it applies to apes just has well has it aplies to men. I always liked Taylor's visibly stunned reaction at 1:25 . Up until now Zaius' views came off as baseless pychoreligious zenophobia, and now he's presented with an assessment that matches his own from the beginning. This being said, (as far as the movies) the passage doesn't seem to apply to the humans after the Lawgiver wrote it, notably the mutants led by Mendez. Other than a leftover nuke, they chose not to advance themselves militarily over 2,000 years nor breed in great numbers. They refused to kill even in basic self defense, and so were utterly defenseless when their illusions failed. All of the ones not gunned down chose suicide instead of resistance. They didn't even fall back to the church to see if their 'holy bomb' could save them. -- The humans like Nova lacked the intelligence to organize an uprising.

Desertification, global warming and ocean acidification are already happening from our short-sighted activities and will irreversibly change the planet for the worse. Food shortages and refugees crises will no doubt be a very real part of our future as land becomes unlivable. If a new ruler of the planet looked back at our rule in the distant future. They wouldn't see the lions as evil, they'd see the ones who murdered and destroyed everything as evil.

One of the first movies I remember watching as a kid in the 70's. Such a timeless classic with themes that reverberate as strongly today as they did 50 years ago.
THIS is what makes for great science fiction, not the awesome (for the day) ape makeup, but the injection of realism & truth. Intelligent concepts & dialog. Also, having one of the BEST endings ever doesn't hurt either.
Still awesome, I can watch it now and I don’t feel it’s cheap or out of place. Incredible it still feels right even now. Best of the apes movies, it’s message that man isn’t fit to rule is right, if nuclear war ever happens we’re screwed. Our overpopulation is just prolonging the inevitable.
Why not a prequel of Armando the circus owner, that human friend of Cornelius and Zira who was destined to become the foster-father of Caesar? It would undoubtedly be a breakthrough role for some actor out there whose outstanding performance would contribute significantly to the development of his career, not to mention achieving cult classic status and a developing influence on popular POTA culture.
a lot of people like to praise Zaius character, personally I'm of the opposing side, Zaius became how he is by knowing mans history, but this caused him to close his mind and heart to any of mankind's good qualities, knowing only the bad he lived in fear of what they could do, and that caused him to do very terrible things, as those driven by fear often do, perhaps if he had chosen to try and foster the simple humans into a kinder species instead of trying to beat them down, things might have turned out differently.
Zaius had no knowledge of good qualities in humans, the only ones remaining were speechless animals who had bombed themselves into that state. It’s no wonder he hated them.

One of the absolute best films of any genre. Captures something intangible. The dialogue, the sets, and the score, the score touches me to this day on a level that is difficult to describe. If it's on I have to watch it.
"For he is the harbinger of death". Yes, that rightly describes mankind. If man were to suddenly disappear from the earth only good things would happen, whereas, if insects were to disappear, only bad things would happen.
He isn’t good nor is he bad, he’s far more complex than that due to the phenomenal writing of his character and the movie as a whole. He does despicable things but he’s doing it because he truly believes it’s for the right reasons. He does these things because he knows his people will suffer in some way if he doesn’t. He truly believes man is capable of nothing but evil and cruelty and he’ll do whatever he feels is necessary to spare his people from it.
While Zaius was right in his views of man, his species is no better and will follow the same path in the long run. War is only natural, even among apes.
There is no way a twist like this would work these days. You're telling me he crash landed in the future on another planet with species that look the same as the ones we had on earth, either just more evolved or privative.
A twist like this wouldn't work because it's been done and has affected a good chunk of pop culture. Much like how every "I am your father"-type scene echoes Darth Vader's and will never equal it. Also, humans and similar species on Earth evolving in other planets is a pretty popular theory, no way to disprove it since we've yet to find such life on other planets.

Although he was right in what humanity has done to the planet he's also proving himself to be just as proud, stubborn, arrogant and hypocritical as the humans he verbally crucifies. Everyone is so quick to crucify something that they don't understand yet quicker to beg for mercy when they're being nailed to the metaphorical cross... even these "damned dirty apes".

The one thing that this movie series will always have that the newer Ape saga has is this: It has a message about humanity, about how we consider ourselves to be the masters of our world, the superior species, yet we will destroy each other for the dumbest of reasons and finally when a species somehow gets it right, we have to come back and destroy it because we cannot fathom another intelligent species taking our place.

I liked that Taylor did not try to defend humanity at that moment. He knew that what was written was not wrong.
The "Man kills for sport" line stands out to me given that in the beginning of the film we saw apes killing humans for what appears to be sport. Zauis is right that humans are capable of awful things, something even the main character said so himself at the start, but we see the apes aren't that different from humans in this regard either.
Well, humans are technically apes, great apes alongside chimps, orangutans and gorillas. We will not speak of the bonobos.
They where actually killing humans because they where stealing crops from their farms and destroying their fields in the process
The apes are as intelligent as humans so as we have seen they are just as bad as we are.
This is something the mangas HunterXHunter and The Promised Neverland dealt with when a species of monsters gained human level intelligence. The monsters being as smart as humans meant they can be as kind as humanity, but as just as cruel.
In a sense, Zauis' bigotry is an example of the worst humanity is capable of as a species. The worst acts of humanity are those carried out under the pretense of doing the right thing.
Plenty of animals kill for sport, too. Not just man. Watch some UA-cam videos where *unprovoked* cats, lions, hippos, elephants, etc, will attack and kill another animals for fun. To say man is alone is this is to admit that man is not an animal. No, we're all on this planet together, with equal mentalities.

Playing devil's advocate, the depiction of ape society is based on dated information. When this movie was made, gorillas were assumed to be violent animals.

As a kid, I hated Zaius and thought he was the bad guy, but now I have much more respect for the character -- the guy was trying to protect the future of his people.
He was also keeping the planet alive. As a man of almost 40 who grew up watching this masterpiece, it breaks my heart to admit how accurate the part is about "he will make a desert of his home and of your home". Man has become the real cancer to this wonderful planet.

Taylor starts the film with the same assessment of humanity (before he goes into suspended animation). After re-gaining his freedom and proving that man was the dominant species before the apes were, now he has all of his worst assessment of humanity confirmed by the scroll.
Numinous20111 isn’t that funny when he criticizes humans at the beginning but throughout the movie he is, the man, who believes he is more dominant than the apes and will do anything to justify that which includes war against the apes. Just revalidating his first monologue, ignorantly, doesn’t realize he is part of the problem as well.
Only the apes were no better. In fact, in some ways they were worse. Repressing their own society so they could never advance to the level of mankind. Also they did not treat what remained of mankind with respect and kindness. They put them in cages and at at best treated like like garbage.
Taylor's cynicism of man is validated by the end of the movie. While criticizing man, I don't believe that Taylor ever put himself above the evils of man and was well aware he was part of that evil as well.

Which was caused by a war of aggression initiated by the apes.

I get the feeling that years before, Dr. Zaius himself went into the Forbidden Zone and discovered the wrecked Statue of Liberty, and thus the truth of his world. If so, he was indeed the Guardian of the Terrible Secret and had every reason to be utterly terrified of Taylor. That supposition, for me, is what makes the final scene in the camp make particular sense:
"Lieutenant, have your troops bring explosives. We are going to seal up the entrance to the cave forever. And you, Cornelius, will stand trial for heresy. Take him away."
"But... the doll!"
"In a few minutes there will be no doll. There can't be. I'm sorry."
"Dr. Zaius, this is inexcusable! Why must knowledge stand still?!? What about the future?"
"I may have just saved it for you."
"But what will he find out there, Doctor?"
"His destiny."
Dr. Zaius definitely knew. He knew what Taylor was going to find.
A prequel starring a young Dr Zaius and his initial quest for understanding of the planet and his civilization would be quite interesting!
That is why Dr. Zaius ordered to close Dr. Cornelius's expedition. He actually saw the whole ruin of mankind, The Statue of Liberty.
He knew but there was a meaning behind his actions too that most missed. He made the same mistake so many before had of burying the truth and dooming his own people to repeating the same mistakes again. It was meant to be a lesson that unless you face the truth you're going to repeat the same mistakes.

The problem with secrets, is they tend to be discovered one way or another whether we want it or not.

They say they are superior, yet they keep secrets like we do, enslave like we do, read and write, make weapons and use them against innocents, and say the reasoning for violence is to preserve our futures, and to torture is for science.
Such a great movie. Still maintains to be watchable nearly 60 years later. The costumes are just perfect IMO. No CGI or special effects and they still look great. Even the movement of the mouth isn't bad.
CGI for costumes is rare, very rare. No idea why you bring that up, it's stupid. The only examples I know of is Superman's cape and the Green Lantern costume. Just another comment in the vain of "old movies looked better because they didn't use CGI" while most people are totally ignorant watching stuff where they have no idea it's CGI because it's that good. They only notice bad CGI and think all CGI is bad.

I disagree. For the time the costumes were okay. But, even without CGI and only make-up we can do a much more convincing ape now. Look at the Marky-Mark remake. It's an awful movie. But, the costumes weren't CG and they looked much better than they did in this.

The expression on Taylor's face when Cornelius reads the scroll says it all this seen has a lot of truth to it.
Saw it in a drive in with my family in ‘68. While most (but not all) went over my head, my father had a great respect for Charlton Heston and that was the only reason he watched this film. And I think in the end he gained a new respect for “outer space films” after watching this one.
I didn't watch this movie until I was an adult, after I'd seen it referenced a million times, with every possible surprise spoiled, explained, and parodied. It was still such a glorious work of art that not only did it withstand the test of time, the references did little to diminish it in any way, and it still held surprises that weren't spoiled. It's no wonder why everybody's still well aware of this old masterpiece.
I wish I could watch the movie without knowing about the twist ending that i grew up knowing about from various parodies, but like you said the movie as a whole is pretty amazing. Dr Zaius initially being seen as a cruel theocratic man-hating villain who doesn't wanna listen to the kind and caring chimpanzees, but at the end you learn that he's maybe the only ape who knows history and that is why he his fear of humans becomes more justifiable due to the destruction humans have caused and may one day do again (which he becomes even more right about in the sequel as well). And while the movie at the time was about nuclear holocause which isnt as much of a fear today as it was back then, it could still be replaced with the fear of accelerated climate change, deforestation and pollution, which are also human destructions of life on Earth that are more relevant today.

Seeing it in the theaters (or the drive-in) was pretty awesome.
But the film is pretty spell binding, so even seeing it 50+ years later I still get a jolt out of the ending.

Not only greatest Sci-Fi movie but one of the greatest movies ever! The script, acting and directing is masterful and the film is just iconic! Not only is this movie entertaining it also makes you think. It is a critical study of man. The movie also took a big risk as it was completely different from anything that came before it. A movie about space and a planet full of talking apes - very different!

@@chadjcrase exactly, the rest of the series touches on that as well. The point of the Planet of the Apes series as I’ve always understood it, was the hypocrisy of the apes themselves. Just read Jane Goodall’s book about the Gombe Chimpanzee War. It’s also worth mentioning that a lion male will murder cubs in order to win mating opportunities with lionesses after he kills the rival male and claims his pride.
An orca male in the Pacific Ocean just off the coast of British Columbia was once observed killing a calf so he could mate with its mother. Plus, how many herbivore males (deer, buffalo, hippos) fight to the death (or until one of them gives up) for mating opportunities or for territory?
The 29th Scroll, 6th verse is wrong about man being alone among God’s primates being the only one that kills for sport, lust or greed. Humans are not alone among the primates or even the other animals that do that.
What I think the series points out without saying is that where humans are alone among the animals is that we have the intelligence and the moral compass to change our behavior for the better. I highly doubt other apes will rise to where we are as they did in the films.

What makes us different is that humans are capable of changing for the better. Humans are capable of building great societies and technologies and we can develop systems of laws. Other animals can’t do that. And yes, some humans fall short but that’s how evolution works. Survival of the fittest. Natural selection is not limited to the species, it’s limited to individuals within populations of a species.
Thing is, considering Taylor blows up the planet even worse than his ancestors did...Zaius turned out to be totally right.
That's what makes him so brilliant as an antagonist, Maurice Evans' great acting aside. He's written with few flaws in his reasonings and is proven correct at the end of the day.

An interesting question. The apes have a very powerful and well organized military. They would not have this war machine strictly to fight dumb (Can't speak) humans so exactly who was this army created to fight and defend against? Either they have enemies the movie never expounded upon or they have fought ape against ape and if so then the pot would seem to be calling the kettle black.
The Planet of The Apes comics by Boom Studios actually offers a good explanation for this. Humans are not actually mindless feral beasts, they've just lost the ability to communicate but they can be taught sign language. Once they have a way to 'talk' to each other, they start to organise and begin to pose a threat to the apes. In one comic, they even started to arrange coordinated raids on the apes.
That's the point of the movie. It shows that no matter the species, intelligence and "civilization" really means that the dominant species would eventually become corrupt and wicked.
I actually remember reading one planet of the apes comic where the apes had to fight these malicious giant reptiles that resembled pterodactyls. It sounds a bit ridiculous but one can’t help but wonder what other animals evolved into great and terrible things after the downfall of man.
I'm wondering if this military wasn't primarily for killing mutants. Zaius mistakenly believes that Taylor is a mutant and tries to make a deal with him to give up the location of their base. But we don't actually get introduced to the mutants until the next movie. I wonder if that was an idea that was in the original script but got cut for time or money reasons.

The irony was that Dr Zaius and Taylor both detested war and savagery alike. Taylor finding what he did in the Forbbiden Zone and reacting in anger and sadness the way he did is testament to that
This movie was maybe the first one I was really obsessed with as a kid. I remember thinking how Zaius really confirmed all of my skepticism of political and religious authority figures, but was also totally right. Maybe one of the first time I really had to confront moral ambiguity in a thoughtful way.

I was also fascinated by the message in this movie. As a kid I was conflicted because naturally I wanted to side with Taylor but it wasn't easy and clear cut why as events unfold.

When dr. Zaius asks Taylor why didn't man survive, he is not asking because he does not know, he is asking because he wants to see if Taylor is willing to admit to himself the answer he fears and doesn't admit it until the end scene. Dr. Zaius knew the real answer the whole time, that's why he has such hatred of humans and sees them only as beasts. In his lifetime the humans are primitive, but Dr. Zaius knows the potential of what damage humans can do.

I always liked Taylor's visibly stunned reaction at 1:25 . Up until now Zaius' views came off as baseless pychoreligious zenophobia, and now he's presented with an assessment that matches his own from the beginning.
This being said, (as far as the movies) the passage doesn't seem to apply to the humans after the Lawgiver wrote it, notably the mutants led by Mendez. Other than a leftover nuke, they chose not to advance themselves militarily over 2,000 years nor breed in great numbers. They refused to kill even in basic self defense, and so were utterly defenseless when their illusions failed. All of the ones not gunned down chose suicide instead of resistance. They didn't even fall back to the church to see if their 'holy bomb' could save them. -- The humans like Nova lacked the intelligence to organize an uprising.

Desertification, global warming and ocean acidification are already happening from our short-sighted activities and will irreversibly change the planet for the worse. Food shortages and refugees crises will no doubt be a very real part of our future as land becomes unlivable.
If a new ruler of the planet looked back at our rule in the distant future. They wouldn't see the lions as evil, they'd see the ones who murdered and destroyed everything as evil.

One of the first movies I remember watching as a kid in the 70's. Such a timeless classic with themes that reverberate as strongly today as they did 50 years ago.
The prosthetics are amazing, they convey emotion so powerfully.
THIS is what makes for great science fiction, not the awesome (for the day) ape makeup, but the injection of realism & truth. Intelligent concepts & dialog. Also, having one of the BEST endings ever doesn't hurt either.
Still awesome, I can watch it now and I don’t feel it’s cheap or out of place. Incredible it still feels right even now. Best of the apes movies, it’s message that man isn’t fit to rule is right, if nuclear war ever happens we’re screwed. Our overpopulation is just prolonging the inevitable.

a lot of people like to praise Zaius character, personally I'm of the opposing side, Zaius became how he is by knowing mans history, but this caused him to close his mind and heart to any of mankind's good qualities, knowing only the bad he lived in fear of what they could do, and that caused him to do very terrible things, as those driven by fear often do, perhaps if he had chosen to try and foster the simple humans into a kinder species instead of trying to beat them down, things might have turned out differently.
Zaius had no knowledge of good qualities in humans, the only ones remaining were speechless animals who had bombed themselves into that state. It’s no wonder he hated them.

Yeah but his species was traveling the exact same path Just becasue his species never took the time to search for the evolutionary path of humans since their beginings . He could have help the apes in the evolution by listenning to Taylor and humans had evolve to avoid his own species from repeating the same mistakes but like all politiciens the fear was greater than the logic .
@@guytremblay1647 no he wasn't, they had no desire to develop advanced technology capable of wiping out the planet, they had no internal wars of aggression or internal wars, and they were slowly healing the damage humanity had caused to the world
@@CannabisDreams i never said they had desire to destrooy the planet . I said there evolution of mentality was leading them strait in that direction . They were already slaving mankind which is how humans started they invaded the forbiden zone which was actually forbiden by the teachings for them to do and when they found the new evolved humans they didn't even hesitate to kill them and destroy their habitat and yto top it they started to destroy the humans God which was actually a doomsday bomb . Thats human behaviour in its infancy . It didn't take time for Taylor to realise that history was repeating itself but this time with the apes . So he did what he had to do and ended the viscious circle of madness . He would have never set the bomb off if he was persuated that the apes could be a better species than man .
Its one thing to want to have a peacefull species but its another thing when your actions in your evolution show otherwise.

One of the absolute best films of any genre. Captures something intangible. The dialogue, the sets, and the score, the score touches me to this day on a level that is difficult to describe. If it's on I have to watch it.

"For he is the harbinger of death". Yes, that rightly describes mankind. If man were to suddenly disappear from the earth only good things would happen, whereas, if insects were to disappear, only bad things would happen.
He isn’t good nor is he bad, he’s far more complex than that due to the phenomenal writing of his character and the movie as a whole. He does despicable things but he’s doing it because he truly believes it’s for the right reasons. He does these things because he knows his people will suffer in some way if he doesn’t. He truly believes man is capable of nothing but evil and cruelty and he’ll do whatever he feels is necessary to spare his people from it.

I do sometimes wonder whether our political leaders ever watch films like this and really allow it to sink in.

While Zaius was right in his views of man, his species is no better and will follow the same path in the long run. War is only natural, even among apes.
This definitely showed up on my home page because I watched the Simpsons' "Dr Zaius" musical number a bunch of times.
He got it down to a tee , man the ultimate paradox , can do so much good and wonder but and also do so much evil and violence as well …….
There is no way a twist like this would work these days. You're telling me he crash landed in the future on another planet with species that look the same as the ones we had on earth, either just more evolved or privative.
A twist like this wouldn't work because it's been done and has affected a good chunk of pop culture. Much like how every "I am your father"-type scene echoes Darth Vader's and will never equal it. Also, humans and similar species on Earth evolving in other planets is a pretty popular theory, no way to disprove it since we've yet to find such life on other planets.

Although he was right in what humanity has done to the planet he's also proving himself to be just as proud, stubborn, arrogant and hypocritical as the humans he verbally crucifies. Everyone is so quick to crucify something that they don't understand yet quicker to beg for mercy when they're being nailed to the metaphorical cross... even these "damned dirty apes".

The one thing that this movie series will always have that the newer Ape saga has is this: It has a message about humanity, about how we consider ourselves to be the masters of our world, the superior species, yet we will destroy each other for the dumbest of reasons and finally when a species somehow gets it right, we have to come back and destroy it because we cannot fathom another intelligent species taking our place.
