I adopted my Maltese named Lady when she was twelve years old. her old owners used to lock her in a bathroom all day without any kind of love or attention. She is now sixteen years old and living the best life I can give her. Each day i notice how tired she is getting; and each day it reminds me that not only did I save her, but she saved me. The day she leaves me will be the saddest day of my life, but I will never regret rescuing my little old lady

... and do not let the departure of your dog(s) make you not want another dog. I feel that many people use grief over the departure of their dog as an excuse of not wanting another dog. Basically, they're saying, "I've had enough of being tied down by a dog. I want to have the freedom to go on tours as and when I want without arranging for someone to care for my dog."

@@nanyanghuayi that’s an interesting perspective. I haven’t gotten another dog because I don’t want a “rebound” or another dog just to take my previous ones spot. Seems unfair to my previous pet, although they aren’t here to judge either way.

I have a Maltese mix too! She was around 8-10 when I found her dumped on the side of the road. She was missing most of her teeth, and going blind and deaf. She’s on antibiotics all the time because of a persistent infection in her mouth that she’s too fragile to do much else for. Surgery to remove the rest of her teeth is too dangerous to risk at her current age- around 15 at the youngest- so we just manage her symptoms and keep her fat and happy. She’s a very good lap dog and my dad adores her.

@@nickthompson1812 it took over a year for me to get another dog after my childhood pet died at 13. I had my old lady, too, but there was still a hole without more dogs. I can honestly say that my puppy has not replaced my childhood dog, but she does bring me a lot of joy and provide companionship for my old lady. My 15 year old Maltese mix was very lonely and depressed after my other dog died but she’s much happier now, even if the puppy drives her a little mad sometimes.

Just how there’s a special place in heaven for those who adopt senior dogs, there is a special place in hell for those who abandon senior dogs. I’ve heard so many stories of people effectively trading in their elderly dog for a new puppy. That is so messed up. Dogs are companions FOR LIFE. Abandonment seriously messes with them, and it breaks my heart when people do things like that. I do not comprehend how people can do such heartless things

What? I would take a nice calm happy senior dog over a bitey mad devil that is a puppy? I actually do have a puppy currently and can't wait until he grows up 🙄, the puppy stage is just something I have to go through in order to train a well rounded dog. Honestly I'm so adopting an older dog when I'm older 😆.

My husband & I are retired and we have 5 senior dogs, we were never blessed with children (so no grandchildren 🙁) that makes caring for 5 doable for us. When one dies we look for another senior to take its place. We cry a lot of tears for each one that leaves us, because we give them all the love we have for what time they are with us, but we are happy in the thought that every minute we had them, they were loved to the fullest. 💗 if you can adopt one larger or maybe two small ones, it will enrich your life beyond measure. 😊

A few years ago when I was looking to adopt my first dog ever I had my eye on an 8 year old dog, but the rescue group recommended against adopting a senior dog for a first time dog owner; their logic was that there is a real possibility that they won't last much longer and it would be a very bittersweet memory. I kind of get it... If I had been in that place I would have freaked out (thinking I somehow screwed up and killed the dog) and that might have put me off ever having another pet. I ended up adopting a 3~4 years old dog, she is 7 now. Hopefully she'll be with me for a long long time, but now that I have proven to myself that I can keep a dog alive and thriving, I might make the jump with my next dog and adopt a senior.

We adopted a 7 year old shelter dog in 2012 and now he is 16 years old! Buggs is a schnoodle (schnauzer- poodle mix. ) I think an older dog can make a good first pet because you don't have to go through the puppy stages of housebreaking, chewing everything, etc.

I always thought that too, after my 18 year old passed.. but a lady at the shelter I worked at put it into perspective for me. She said "it's always going to hurt loosing a dog even after only a couple years, but imagine how much more it hurts dying on a concrete floor, alone." And she's right. It was selfish of me to think "I don't want to cry over another dog passing away" but.. that just means the senior dogs I *would* have adopted might now have to die all alone, on a shelter floor or be taken to the back and killed off because shelters are heavily overpopulated

  • @Rain_fawn

Honestly, we need more selfless people in this world. Imagine yourself as a dog, inside a cage and a cold floor, and because your old no body’s wants to adopt you because “you will die soon enough”. Yeah, eventually you will, alone, on that cold floor, and without a loving family.
So if you are planning on adopting a dog but are nit ready for a puppy, rescue a dog like Miya! Let that dog live it’s last years, months, or even days in a loving home

I rescued my cat, Chloe, from Death Row for being too “feral.” They said she’d never be able to be domesticated. It’s been 8 years and she’s 9 now. She’s sitting next to me on her pink pillow after a morning full of playtime and pets.
I’d love to adopt senior pets, but I can’t handle the heartbreak. I’m happy I took a chance on Chloe. Never automatically dismiss an animal, without giving them a chance.

Wow. Dismissing a cat that young as completely hopeless is atrocious. If they were like, 10+ I could at least understand (but not agree with) why people would think that, there is literally an expression about old dogs and new tricks after all, but wow. Just grab some thick gloves, long sleeves and catnip and get to socializing.

@@CoRLex-jh5vx I don't understand either. I was at the shelter volunteering with my "little sister." and had no intentions of adopting a cat. When I found out she was going to be euthanized the next day, there was no other option.
She was found abused in a hoarding situation. She was a little skittish, went through the garbage can and cupboards for food, and ate fast. Easily solved. It was a bit of a challenge to get her to accept her brother, but he was used to dogs and other cats, and very patient. They eventually developed a close bond.
She's such a lap cat. The cat that was feral is still grieving her brother's loss. He looks for him, and sleeps in his bed and blankets. We were watching a movie when a cat looking exactly like her brother came on the screen and she jumped up pawing at the screen trying to get to him.

Love the seniors; as I grow older adopting elderly canine just makes sense. Leisurely strolls, Friday and Saturday night movies. They no longer get to choose what we watch...learned that the hard way. I'm fortunate to have a good friend who is a Vet tech / groomer and my neighbor is my Vet as the elderly come with health related baggage. The old guys and gals are mellow, easily adapt to using the doggy doors and the daily routine. Yes they never live as long as I'd like but regardless if it's 18 months or several years.....we have a great time. Old dogs rock!

Our one rescue, our male (3 female huskies and a male husky/GSD) has been there for me more than any human ever has.
He was beaten w sticks and overwalled so badly as a.puppy he still has severe anxiety sometimes and panic attack type things but whenever I'm sad, or especially if I cry he will even drop treats to cuddle and kiss me better. He has stopped me mid suicide attempts, he has defended my girlfriend when a drunk man tried it on with her (despite being terrified himself, we had to comfort him for like two days)
He's 6 now, we got him when he was 5months. Id never had my own dog before I met my partner and her dog (Lila, we still have her) was only two.months old. My god.
Dogs are angels on earth and changed me more than you could ever think.
I'm isolated, don't have family (had to cut contact), and it's hard without my fur kids...but I'm holding out for better luck and a sunny winter walk soon. Please 🙏🐺😭

He didnt know how to be a dog, trusted no one and nothing, was scared of every little sound, didnt even know what a river was. He was dirty and with years of dead undercoat stuck in his fur combined with all the dirt he got horrible skin, small breaks everywhere, lost whole patches of fur after i combed him because his skin was basically peeling off. Fast forward four months, he is a snuggly, calm boy with a shiny coat and a special interest for people sitting down at the park. He is getting better everyday and even with noticable phases of anxiety and even ehat seems to be occasional flashbacks, he tries his best to be a good boy. And he certainly is. I love him lots.

My family adopted a senior black lab who was deaf and blind when I was a teenager. We were told she might live for 6 months because she was so old, but that sweet girl was my baby and she lived for another TWO YEARS. I honestly believe that genuine love is just as important as good care, we loved her every single day she was with us.

My family never bought a dog. I am 37 years old now and i picked up 6 of them from the street and gave them a home. Three are still alive and i intend to keep filling my home the same way as long as i am able. They made me a better person, each and every one of them had a lesson to teach and while waiting for my firstborn to arrive i can honestly say that the joy these miracles give is the single thing i am most excited to share with him/her.
Take care of yourselves folks, and once you do that fill your life with creatures that deserve a place beside you on that rocking chair.
And be grateful, it is us that receive the greatest gift when we share their company, not the other way around.
Thank you for reading this and i wish you all the best from Norway

I’ll never have enough respect for people who adopt senior dogs. Dogs, no matter the age, are very easy to love. And losing them is so emotionally devastating. My beagle is currently reaching the ripe age of 14. This is a dog I’ve known since birth. I was there when he was born. And every day he gets a little more tired… and a little more of who he was slips away. He doesn’t have much more time and it breaks my heart… knowing he won’t be around much longer.
So immense respect to the people who can love so many good animals.

Dogs don’t choose to be service dogs but they put their lives on the line and work tirelessly. They deserve more respect.

I have a friend who bought an old barn and the land it was on some years back, now it has become the shelter for older animals he has a few old dogs 'pigs goose ducks two swans and chickens 2older donkeys he made also an avionic space where the birds that must heal of some accidents can live on their ease he told me that he never felt so happy when he shows up the morning and each of these animals have like a bond with him and relations he was so surprised to experience how the many animals do really cope and interact and this without any violence or aggressivity he also got a few guanacos and peacocks and turkeys it is becoming like a real little ark of undesired animals it happens so often, and it is sad that people do not realize how much of a obligation and responsibility it is to keep animals, realizing they become adults and need attention, but they keep dropping them once the pet and juvenile stage is over many people do betray these creatures by dropping them, and I am so happy i can help a hand and feel the love and gratitude of my animal friends when I get on path with them, we humans could be living in a paradise if at least we would respect and treat everything right instead of wanting to change nature

As someone who has had a senior rescue in the past, and wouldn't hesitate to rescue one again, let me just say, you can't go wrong with a senior rescue. They just seem to have this "I'm just so happy to be here" attitude that will leave you feeling warm and fuzzy for the rest of their short little lives. You will never find a more loving and loyal companion than a senior rescue, and they're worth every penny and ounce of effort you put in to their care a thousand fold!

We rescued a 14 year old labrador last july, his master couldnt take care of him due to medical complications. We loved our Joey, he was an exceptional dog. We knew due to his age he wouldnt stay long with us, but we loved him so much. He passed after 2 months and Im crying writing this. Even though his passing was very tough to go through, we dont regret this decision.
Adopt senior dogs, they are amazing and worth every effort

Thanks for helping a sweet senior dog. Just because a dog gets older doesn't mean they lost their purpose. A dog loves you unconditionally and being their for them when they age is so important. Thanks for what you do.

Dogs can end up on "death row" in the shelters if they are not adopted soon enough. The dogs that are euthanized first are either very sick or aggressive, but even sweet, healthy dogs like Maya can be put down if the shelter runs out of room and she has been there for several months. It's so very sad. That's why I always encourage people to adopt and not shop : )

@@malloryg4251 it really sucks for the sick and aggressive dogs though. My brother's dog was thrown out into the streets by her owners at the age of TWO WEEKS. The reason? Because she was "too small". She got a various amount of diseases but someone thankfully fostered her to health so she wouldn't be put down. We ended up adopting her and she's such a good girl.
I've also known a few dogs with temperament issues that were adopted and turned out to be wonderful family pets, they just needed the time and love.
I feel so horrible for animals that never get the chance to be happy.

Back in first grade I was taken to a rescue shelter as a surprise to pick out a dog. There was a dog no older than 2 that was terrified of me. I was hellbent on her and her only despite being encouraged to leave her be. Over a decade later, she lives her best life with people who love her and plenty of space to run around. She's been with us through horrible moments, and we've helped her through her own. She's the best, I'd never find another like her. She wasn't adopted as a senior, but seeing her get slower and slower every time I return home from college, my heart breaks a little more

Old dogs deserve a good life. I have had 2 seniors, Lesi who was the love of my life and died at 17 and Bo who we called Puppie, he died this year at 16. I now have one 7 year dog who has heart problems and one big guy with behavioral problems (he is afraid and aggressive towards people), but he is an angel to my family and our many pets (4 🐈). They all deserve a good home and love and they give so much back.

Old dogs are amazing. They have learned so much over the years, so wise and special. People who get rid of old dogs for puppies like they are trading in a for a new car are disgusting. Thank you to all of those who care for the old pups.
