Your pronunciation of “Fish” is spot on Pete! Steven Reid has coached you well. Superb album. Complete classic.
I bought "Clutching at straws" a year ago, i have slowly but surely got into Marillion, but i love this album. The lyrical content is superb, great storytelling, the band is fantastic. Its dark, atmospheric and.......its great!
*Love both ‘ Clutching at Straws’ and ‘Misplaced Childhood’ . Thank you for this rewind!! * All the damn time!!🎤🎸🎵🥁
The best part is how Kelly and Rothery each take focus for a time and then fade back into a support role. It is all so amazingly woven together musically even before the story. A masterpiece all around.
Clutching is a great album and great Swan song for Fish.
Amazing album! My fave by Marillion. A total masterpiece.
Clutching at Straws is my favorite Marillion album. It’s an absolute poetic masterpiece. Fish’s lyrics are so good on this album. I love Misplaced Childhood and all the Fish Marillion albums as well, but not as much as this one. One of my favorite albums from the 80’s.
Yep … I wonder the amount of stuff needed to write things like “neon cascades” and etc…
A masterpiece of an album. My favorite is still the debut.... but Clutching is right there with it. The deluxe edition is incredible
Great choice! Love this album. Timeless.
Love that album and still love Marillion to this day!
Thanks Pete for turning me on to this album. I previously only knew of Marillion from the hit single, "Kayleigh," but never owned any of their albums. I bought Clutching at Straws when you had your favorite prog rock concept albums show. It is an absolute classic!
We are on the same wavelength about Marillion. Such an underrated band.
Steve Rothery is so underrated!!
His latest solo album “Ghosts….” is quite good.
The Ghosts of Pripyat … inspired (?) on Chernobyl’s sequel. That is.
The thing that always sticks out to me about "Clutching at Straws" is In Warm Wet Circles, there is this guitar passage from Rothery that to me feels very atmospheric and like taking a deep breath. Makes me think if a cross between Gilmour and Hackett.
A cross between Gilmour and Hackett is a racket.
My favorite Marillion album. It's dark, but I like it.
Great album. Love it when Pete starts singing and playing the instruments when doing these reviews haha
A perfect album by all accounts. This is an incredible swan song for FISH, and I really miss him dearly with Marillion. I wish they did a 5th one, but reality sets in. ;)
My favourite marillion album and I only discovered it at the start of the millennium! My 2nd fave is seasons end. They have done a lot of great songs from other albums but not as consistent from start to finish as those two. I wish they would return to the sound of the 80s again...
This is such a fitting conclusion to the fish era and such a daring and emotionally moving album some of fish's best vocal performances are on this album
Clutching at Straws is easily one of my favourite albums of all time, I honestly don't think Misplaced Childhood even comes close to how good it is and I think that album is amazing as are all the Fish-Era albums. Fish is just on fire poetically on this album....You can really tell that he put everything into it and you can feel it as well.
On fire & on powder.
Recently rediscovered this one after a couple decades away from it. My Lord it has aged well. Classic and timeless.
Pete, I'm really becoming a fan of you acting out the kicker parts on these albums.
Pete, This show was great> Back in the 80's a co-worker of mine only listened to British rock told me this band was one of his favorites, at that time if you did not hear someone on the radio you really did not know what you were into. Move forward 20 years to about 2005 and i had subsection services, i could never figure out the spelling, closest i got was a US R&B groups from the 70's. I knew this was not the type of music Ray was talking about.
I listened to the show this morning and when i had to drive someplace today, i listened to the whole CD in my car via Apple music. So good, i will be exploring more of their music in the near future. Thank You! PS parts of it reminded me of 80's Who music, some of the vocals sound a little like Pete, and at times the keyboards sound like the synth Pete was doing from Who Are You on. Thanks again.
My favourite Marillion album. I bought CAS when it came out, saw them on that tour, but I did what Pete said and replayed that album and I'm happy to report White Russian still sends a shiver down my spine, even after all these years! Thanks Pete!
My all time favourite. All the albums with Fish albums are something special
Love Incommunicado and Sugar Mice! Great album. 😎
I totally agree with you on this one, Mr. Pardo. I was a huge Marillion fan during the 80s, and followed each of the classic 4 studio albums. "Clutching At Staws" being my all time favorite of them all, Including all of the later Marillion music with Steve Horgarth at the helm. This is hands down, the best Marillion album. I don't say that lightly either, as I really enjoy much of their work. But for me, I seemed to be able to relate to this one (CAS) the most, lyrically, emotionally, and musically. Keep up the good shows. I have enjoyed some of your musical perspectives. You are a bit younger than I am, so I can spot some of our differences in taste, but overall you seem to pull these shows together in a very professional manner, as well as choosing good topic choices. Thanks for doing this.
This is one of my top 10 albums.
All four Fish albums are classics. Clutching is my favorite so it tops Misplaced.
When Fish isn't incommunicado, he moves in warm wet circles.
Amazing album! I love this record so much!
My favorite Marillion album, just edges out Misplaced. Great choice Pete
I love “Clutching at Straws” so much, definitely the best LP they made with Fish
In my top ten albums of all time. A stone cold classic with not a moment wasted.
Great, great album. Slainte Mhath is sublime: guitar, vocal, lyrics…got it all!
Total agreement. Clutching at Straws is my favorite Fish-era Marillion album. It still packs a punch.
My favorite album from the Fish era, and for many years, my all time favorite Marilliion release. Then came 2016 and this album called F E A R. Took more than two and a half years to digest it, and by late 2019 it became my all time favorite Marillion album. But no other Marillion album to date will displace Clutching from it's second place.
Wanted to like FEAR it dont do much for me. Tho some people rate it highly.
I love every note of C.A.S.
It is such a great listen.
Absolutely my favourite Marillion record, and one of my desert island discs. It took me a while to get it and for a few years I preferred Misplaced Childhood. Now, when I listen to Marillion albums in order, each one smokes its predecessor. Its a shame that we only had four records from this line-up. When I listen to them I feel that in Misplaced Childhood and Clutching, they had just hit their peak creativity and could have carried on at this level.
Hi Pete this is a great and very informative show. Please please please continue it as long as you can as there are so so many of the albums which can be covered as with your vast catalogue and experience this is very much possible ...thanks
Great choice again Pete! I always heard good things about Fish era Marillion but it wasn’t until I heard it from you that I decided to try them out in earnest - absolutely fantastic, reminds of a modern take on Peter era Genesis! He also sings a lot like Pete Townsend! I’m very grateful for your channel!
Hi Pete, loved the song and dance you did in describing Incommunicado. Would love for you to do that on all the Rewinds as it really helped me picture the song. Thanks and keep up the good work!
Good morning (afternoon, evening or night), Pete. Came to Marillion after finding SoT in early 2020. Been stuck just listening to the big sibling of your choice today but have not tired of Misguided Childhood even after a lot of listening for more than a year now. But the show today will move the needle and finally get me to choose another Marillion album and Clutching At Straws sounds like the perfect choice. Thanks for the show and Classic Album Rewind Series. Looking forward to the Alphabet series even though might miss the starting few days as they are aired. As always, great discussion of the album.
I usually agree on Pete’s analysis ( anyone) in around 97,42% of times. 😂
A brilliant album.
That's my favourite too, and I saw the tour, at Massey Hall in Toronto.
Pete mimics were amazing.
I definitely agree this was the apex of the entire Marillion catalogue. Got to see them in Edinburgh in '87. I also remember the Friday Rock Show in Sept '88 when DJ Tommy Vance announced Fish would be leaving. I couldn't believe it. In retrospect, perhaps it made sense, as Clutching had it all: they had cracked it in my view. Even the cover and stylized logo were perfect. I'm off to rewind 'Torch Song' and maybe read some Kerouac!
Misplaced Childhood will always be my favorite Marillion album -- I wanted to name my daughter Kayleigh but I didn't have the deciding vote :D -- but Clutching at Straws is a decent follow-up.
We named our daughter Kayleigh, after the song. However MC is not my favourite marillion album. That goes to CAS.
Great review Pete, i love this album always have from the very first listen, i personally always thought it was there best album.
The ending of White Russian gives me goosebumps.Killer album
I don't find the Fish era material all that dark, more exhilarating. C.A.S. is a wonderful listen.
After the first three albums I struggled to get into CaS, I think it really clicked after I saw the Live at Loreley (sorry if I spelt it wrong!) video. For many years now it has been my favourite Fishy Marillion album., my favourite Marillion album bar none. Fish's voice at his best and much as I like his solo work, the rest of the group are the best set of musicians he has worked with.
My favourite Marillion album too 😁👍
Such a good album !!!
they're all masterpieces, but "Clutching" is definitely their peak..... top to bottom, pure perfection...... easily in TOP 10 greatest prog albums of all time
All killer no filler album 😉
A great album from a great band
Timeless masterpiece.
Hi Pete this is my favorite Marillion Album of all time too saw then on the tour and a few years ago Fish went out on tour and played the entire album brought back so many memories terrific album and very underrated totally agree with you on every aspect of the album
Amazing album. One of the twenty or so that are in my Top 5. 😆
I bought this album back in January, a great album
I bought it when came out on vinyl yes I still have it
I believe there's a commonly missed, very subtle point. The last song fades while they're still singing "The Last Straw". Some believe the laugh is "Happy Ending". I believe the point is that this is an album about addiction...there is no happy ending.
I discovered them at Fugazi and was buying each as they came out. This is easily my favorite Marillion album.
Clutching at straws is my favourite album quite comfortably followed by the debut, all brilliant though.
Sugar mice is the master piece of this great album
Fish writing at its best. Reminds me of gabriel . Sugar mice very good
On the cover see mostly dead people. Lenny Bruce. Lennon
Great choice, this band deserves som mentioning. All four "Fish" albums are so good and Clutching is a perfect ending. The first two solo albums by Fish is just as good imo. I I like the first two with Hogarth they are also good but something is missing and more so later on.
I love this album....... :)
Their best album of course. My favorite song on it has to be 'White Russian' which to me just perfectly captures the essence of the band. Misplaces is a very close second though, another perfect record.
Such Great Album..
Fish was the man..
Best Marillion album by far Pete. Thank you for the review. I always liked the B side Marillion song, Tux On which seems to fit with the Clutching at Straws rock star ... ”There's a photo on the mantlepiece, when you bought your first guitar...
And your girlfriend came to see you when you were the rising star
You knew your luck was holding when you filled the local hall
The first time and the last time that you thought you had control
You had a tux on, lucky man, you had a tux on
You got a tux on, tux on” ...
Great song, my favourite B-sides have to be Margaret, Three Boats Down From The Candy and Freaks.
best marillion album i saw them on this tour at the hollywood pallidium in los angeles
Best Marillion album for me and the artist Mark Wilkinson would agree .
I still prefer Misplaced Childhood, but it’s hard to imagine a follow up that could’ve been much better...pretty big achievement.
My kilt approves of your pronunciation of the word fish. You should do a whole show with a Scottish accent.
Great shirt
It's a great one , and would be a very close second to Misplaced Childhood in my ranking of Marillion albums .( Blind Curve and Heart of Lothian wins the day for the previous album .) Warm Wet Circles and Sugar Mice would be in my top 10 songs by them for sure. Good choice !
As isolated songs, there are some from the first and second I think are their highlights. As an entire album, this is for me the best of all Marillion's discography. And even better I consider the first Fish solo. Hogarth's era sounds to me a more "normal" band.
H era is the ancestor of Coldplay in boredom.
@@nsgobbi Sounds perfect.
Amazing album probably my second favourite Marillion album after Brave.
I am 100% sure when I saw Marillion \Rush in Milwaukee on a Monday, March 24 1986, gave Fish the line “On a Sunday In Milwaukee”. At least I am sticking to that, because I don’t think Marillion played Milwaukee ever before that date.
I heard that Fish’s favorite Marillion song was Incubus... a fantastic song.
Although personal reasons make Misplaced my favourite, CAS is my favourite musically. Saw them twice on this tour at Wembley and Hammy Odeon but I did see them before the album came out when they played early versions of White Russian and Sugar Mice
My favourite of the fish album. Much darker than Misplaced...
I will give Misplaced Childhood the very slight nod for my favorite only because I never really liked Incommunicado that much. Warm Wet Circles is probably my favorite Marillion song ever.
Their masterpiece was their first album. Nothing ever came close.
Great choice fav Marillion album.
The first cd I bought 👍
Warm wet circles is brilliant, so many kinds of feelings said outright and implied
A mother's kiss on your first broken heart
A bullet hole
post coital sheet stain
ring of condensation from a glass
Best ‘fush’era album
I hope you're picking up the super deluxe Tull-style boxes Pete, a few are already OOP and going for good money. For me they're even better than the Tull as they all have a feature length doc on the making of the album.
I haven't as of yet...just only so much I can get, plus, space is always an issue.
Lars Ulrich is a big fan of this album, checkout you tube clip of his radio show where he plays Torch song, one of my fav's also from start to finish.
Great review. As for In The Prog Seat tonight. I picked up Chris Squire's "Fish Out Of Water" and Jon Anderson's "Olias Of Sunhillow"
I own this on vinyl
Does the vinyl have a track called going under on it. A short haunting gem of a song, which isnt on some releases if am not mistaken.
@@ukrocksounds3419 no, I don't think so
@@AdamLB Well worth checking out, i know its on later releases, suits the album well.
Me too double gatefold vinyl!
I just picked up the 2 CD version the other day for $1.
Nice..👍
I like ' going under '
On another note, where did you get that great Nazareth shirt?
Two perfect albums but clutching has more listens for me so there’s your answer.
I love this album but I always skip over Incommunicado. It's much too happy to be on this album. Wish Them Well on the last Rush album and It Ain't Easy on Ziggy Stardust are my other votes for Top 3 Misplaced Songs in rock history.
I want to skip Incommunicado sometimes but I feel guilty.
if you like the darker albums, Brave is my fave Marillion. Clutching though a close second. followed by afraid of sunlight
Prefer the H era if I'm honest but clutching is my favourite album overall
As much as I love Misplaced, I prefer Clutching because it feels more like separate songs and is therefore less daunting. Misplaced was designed as one big song and it feels a little more exhausting as a result.
