This may be the best of the three episodes (three, right?) with this type of topic because I enjoy hearing about lesser known bands.
All of these bands had everything in their music that blended various genres with prog, hard and pomp rock along with a lot of other types of music but Angel was my favorite of them all thanks.🎶🎶🎤🎸🎸🎹🥁🎶🎶
I really enjoy this kind of OTT sounding music! On a random side note, it would be interesting to see a video on bands named after places; cities, countries, continents... It seems to have been a popular naming idea in the 70s-80s.
I used to work with a guy who was in a local heavy metal group called St Hellier so I don't know if you'd include slight misspellings
Why not! And some may be generic or not real like McQueen Street
I've seen Magnum on every tour from the beginning.
Also supporting so many bands .
At every Magnum show when Bob introduced the band Tony Clarkin last "and here's the man who creates all this amazing music "
I have the first ZON on rock candy & the latest Magnum. I went to UA-cam to hear the first Aviary & Angel all I have to say is WOW I need theses in my collection. Great show by the way. I can't wait for Steely Dan; I have everything even solo work.
I have the first Zon on vinyl purchased in 1978!
Pomp Rock? Something you play at graduation ceremonies.
no, that would be death metal. 😜
Depends on the circumstances.
That Trillion album is great!
The debut is excellent indeed. Even Clear Approach from 1980 is pretty good. I also have their album III from 2011 which is OK
Magnum is a great grupp ,specially"Vigalante"from 1986 !!!!❤❤❤
My favourite Magnum album ❤
Well there goes another hour. Great fun. I’m a Brit but this one had to be US led but thanks for big ups for Magnum. Mighty band who I first heard on our Friday Rock Show .. “In the Beginning” - (Marauder version) and I was hooked. I think Brendan does have the original Kingdom of Madness cover (certainly in the US) but Pete’s is the one most of us will have. The “better” Magnum II cover with the space ship was a German reissue thing (I think) . Anyways… all hail, farewell and thank you to Tony Clarkin. God Bless , sir. …you kept something going for 50yrs. We appreciated and enjoyed it. The others are in stark contrast but a version of Angel at least has returned…. And I’ve seen em in London !
Aviary , I didn’t know …Will track that first one down.
Trillion , I did know but likewise (Rock Candy here I come ..again. Doh !)
Angel …meant nothing here but those first two albums in particular are stellar. I recall a childhood trip to the US and recall that logo on an advertising hoarding. But yep….even Sinful was just too early. The zeitgeist for that vibe came later and fate is what it is i. The first two are distinct from the next 3 but the material on those 3 is , imo at least, more poppy and might have mixed it with the Asias and Totos in around 1982-1985 but those bands at the level of individual players and arrangements were more distinctive and operating on a higher level.
Good shout out from someone here on Touch and White Sister (certainly the first one). Touch were a smidge too early and the American Tears stuff that preceded them probably could be grouped among the artists that you did cover. Giuffria managed to briefly catch the wave later but White Sister didn’t.
But yup let’s blame Dennis DY for all of it !
@@glorfindelthewhiterider2792 Great post totally agree
Long live Pomp Rock!!!
Looking forwards to thus! Love every band/album on that banner!!
Great show everyone. The only album I own from tonight’s show is the first New England, and I love it. I need to check the others out.
For the record, Aviary did release a third album in 2015 called Heartless, featuring Toby Bowen, Brad and Doug Love from the original line-up. It´s not up there with the two earlier albums but interesting anyhow.
Great show ! Great panel ! Great discussion !
Angel and New England are bands that I absolutely love. I never called it Pomp Rock. It's always been Melodic Hard Rock or Melodic Rock to me. Love the show!
I absolutely love me a bit of Pomp Rock - I remember the UK music paper Sounds ran articles in late 76/77 - maybe 78 - featuring Kansas and Styx with the title 'Pomp rock lives - run for the hills' which is when I first got into Pomp and being a big fan of prog and aor/hard rock Pete's definition sums it up perfectly.
As for Magnum's first album my vinyl purchased here in the UK back in 78 -after I saw Magnum supporting Whitesnake on their tour in November that year has the cover that Pete has on his CD, so I would say that that is the original - at least here in the UK.
As a huge old school prog fan, I had never heard of “pomp rock”. But after listening to some Magnum and Angel, I’m quickly becoming a fan of this sub genre. Thanks guys! Great episode.
Pleased to see Aviary getting so much love from the panel! I own both albums and they are simply great. I always thought they should have supported Queen, they would have made a great fit. Really excited to hear there is a new Ritual out, thanks Scott!
Wow! Say it loud, say it proud, I'm a fan of Pomp rock!
This is one of the few shows where I own almost all the albums mentioned. I watched the video with mounting excitement, at last, MY PEOPLE!!
Here in Scotland in the late 70s early 80s, this was music for outsiders somewhat. It didn't appeal to the punk or pop crowds or indeed many fans of the nascent NWOBHM scene.
It's by no means all I listen to but for today? Let's kick off with some Roadmaster!
Thanks all.
Really looking forward to the Steely Dan episode! There was a long period when I didn't listen to them much at all (from the late '90s to recent times) but having now re-discovered them, they seem to pop up on every music list I make nowadays! I'm sure glad I didn't sell or give away their CDs, like in the case of so many other artists. I actually prefer all of the first five albums to Aja and Gaucho and the rest; the sound is a bit too slick and clinical for my taste on those later records (still good, though).
Solo Fagen is excellent too (3 really solid albums). The Lost Gaucho set is to me as good as the original album
Bob Catley is still singing with Avantasia, his solo work is amazing to.
Ive mentioned them in a coupke of individual replies but can I mention the debut album by CINEMA FACE, which deserves to be more widely lauded. Songs like Lead Us On, Hiw Long?, For Your Iwn Goid, Number 13 and Don't You Forget It are outstanding examples of the genre.
I'll also mention Alpha Centauri, Groundstar, Morningstar, Winterkat, Stencil Forest and Robby Valentine as worthy of further exploration...
Another great show. Nice to see Magnum get some love. One of the most underrated bands of all time.
Make sure you watch the epic Magnum album ranking Steven Reid and I did a few years back!
@@sotdude7 I’ll definitely give it a watch. Thanks.
Pomp Rock Lives Run for the Hills, great Geoff Barton quote 😂😂😂😂😂
This is a great panel! I'm a big fan of all of your channels! Pomp Rock is pretty good as a genre. I feel like it's a fusion of Prog Rock and melodic AOR. The cover art on Brendon's Magnum II looks like a BOC album.
Already knew about Angel & Magnum, but this episode inspired me to check out "Astral Projector", which I ended up buying. Trillion was good, too. And those DDY albums. Great episode.
I saw Zon at a high school in Mississauga Ontario in 1978. They played a great version of hocus pocus. Honestly very much riding the wave of Styx’s success in Canada at that time.
Great episode. One point on where I step away from your consensus is on Trillion. I like both albums but I regard the second one as their classic.
Two outstanding bands not mentioned who fit the remit:
. Touch
. White Sister
Totally agree, Clear Approach is a classic in its own right,
Here in Sweden, and also to some extent in the U.K, Magnum was sort of "semi-lumped" into the NWOBHM scene, especially with the Chase the dragon album and the Back to earth single, also the first live album Marauder, which were all pretty hard hitting. There were many patch clad denim jackets where Magnum patches resided along with Saxon, Maiden,
Leppard and all the others...
😊
Magnum did tour here - they opened shows for Ozzy Osbourne during the Diary of a madman tour, the part of the tour after Randy Rhoad's death. Their album Chase the dragon was released domestically on Jet Records
Saw Angel with Priest and the Godz great show palladium NY
I think the second Ambrosia album sits in this mini-genre, Also, cheers for ZON. As if we are all thinking about this stuff, so cool!
Astral Projector was very good. I'm Worried About The Boys was just OK
Another great show. Pomp Rock is so difficult to be categorised. It has elements of pop, rock, prog, glam.
I think one of the earliest is early Queen (although the term seems to be applied mostly to US bands). The 'bombastic' angle has to be there...
Magnum survived because they had a loyal British fan base !!!!
Trillion album is super good.
Never got Angel. Really tried.
From Angel I liked about 3 total tracks
Trillion put out a few songs in 2011 from a forthcoming 3rd album that never materialized, and two of them are incredible. Check out "In My Blood" & "Golden Sun Beyond". You won't be sorry.
Yeah I like those two tracks as well, plus "Ray Of Light"
Styx, Grand Illusion. Pomp in all its glory.
Touch was another that I absolutely love.
Great to see Scot with all the vinyls amazing
Pete Magnum Kingdom of Madness you have the original album cover !!!.
They were on Jet Records first
Good discussion. For insights on the inner workings of Casablanca Records, I would recommend the 2009 book And Party Every Day The Inside Story of Casablanca Records written by former label exec Larry Harris.
Magnum did have US distribution prior to Polydor; their album Chasing the Dragon was issued in the US via Jet Records.
Not sure I would call them pomp, but another band from this time period I would recommend is Shooting Star. First two albums are excellent melodic rock with prog flourishes.
Great show. Thank you learned a lot.
I drove my friends crazy raving about those early Angel albums back in the day.
Also
The Quick- Mondo Deco (Mercury records 1976)
Was a New England fan from day one when I heard Paul Stanley was co producing ! Went right out and bought the album way back when. Never heard of Aviary and have been trying to listen , so far it’s been a hard, tough listen .. not grabbing me ….
Fascinating discussion, however, I'm astonished that Saga wasn't mentioned at all. The very epitome of 'pomp rock'.
@anthonystenhouse4960 , Because they have always been classed under the Hi - Tech AOR style , but none the less I agree they put on epic live shows. 👌
I like bands that don't fit into a certain genre. First time I heard Angel, I thought WTF is this? They were great fun. Still play their albums today.
Guys…there was a band from 79/80 called Russia. Found them on iTunes 15 yrs ago. Big vocals big production over the top arrangements in a pop/rock vein. Queenish bombast. Maybe made 2 records? VERY POMP ROCK.
I forgot about Russia who turned into Force 10... and I have both cd reissues of those 😂
Wow! What a crew!👍🏻👍🏻
Bighorn - S/T (1978) deserves a mention here, IMO, as well as Stencil Forest - Opening Act, another nice one with great lead and harmony vocals. Great Midwest Pomp Rock/AOR with a Prog twist.
I have that album - not bad. I have it classified as "rock" though - there are AOR elements for sure. Also nice voice box work ("Stand Up")
Ok. What do you think of the first Hybrid Ice? Not pure Pomp as such, but "Castle Walls" is definitely Pompy enough. ; ) ua-cam.com/video/WV-fI2VMsIE/v-deo.html
Magnum are a pomp rock band Brendon fact !!!!!.
magnum had a massive fan base in the UK
My UK vinyl of Aviary has the plane on the front cover with band shot on the back, together with a lyric sheet, always surprises me that New England and Aviary seem to be recent discoveries by some listeners , and some presenters as in UK the debut New England would be seen in many cut outs bins, and both Aviary and New England were frequently covered in UK papers, magazines, especially in recounting classics, this is why Derek Oliver is behind releasing these on his Rock Candy label.
Shooting Star and 707...'79-early '80s
Both very good bands
All the damned time.
George is the man❤
Have you guys ever heard about Jono? It was a recente Swedish project and they were just superb!
...for the live album fans, New England has one called "Live At The Regent Theatre," from 2017, that's pretty darn swell...Zon has got one, as well...
The House of Lords S/T album still sounds amazing with Greg Guiffria's keyboards , I mean that is a killer intro that sounds like no other . 🎹 👌💛
Giuffria had a big hit with “ Call To Your Heart”.😀❤️
When I first saw Magnum’s album art I was expecting something that sounded like Pagan Altar.
Magnum’s “ Vigilante” was produced by Roger Taylor from Queen.😀❤️🎼
Bought Zon debut import in London back in the day
Pomp Rock songs always showed up on the Castlekillers Metal Compilations ,the tracks that everyone skipped over.
Angel is by far the best of all these groups
It was great that Magnum well over here the UK changed their sound etc on every album it's called progression!!!.
Magnum didn't need a formula it worked!! naturally
Love New England!
Thanks Brendon I found the Magnum Box on Amazon for $39.55
The Aviary CD cover that Brendan has looks like the UK press cover - this put me on to them and have bought a Near Mint UK press vinyl copy (coming from France so have to pay tax after the silliness of Brexshit!)
Gotta check out Aviary.
I think of two bands here in Sweden that could fit in the pomp rock genre, Nestor and The Night Flight Orchestra.
Great show! I just wonder if Queen can be considered Pomp Rock. What do you think?
Early Queen = yes for sure (for me). In fact the very first band I think of when I hear that phrase
@@wolf1977 I absolutely agree.
Queen is pomp rock
Is there such thing as Pomp Metal?
Stratovarius - Galaxies, Wings of Tomorrow
Place Vendome - Power of Music
Have you heard that radio promo of Styx singing covers? DeYoung doing Robert Plant, among others. That's a band that could do anything. It's on youtube somewhere.
awesome show
How bout Starz? I think they fit perfectly. Total package. My 4 vinyls are Logo consistent yet they were widely ignored.
Pomp Rock is Saga , Magnum , and Pallas. Hard Hitting Yacht Rock is Kenny Loggins, Jon Cougar Mellon Camp, Foreigner, and Touch
Pallas? Pomp rock? Hmm... maybe a couple of tracks from The Wedge might fall into that category, but I think you'll find they're a prog rock band 95% of the time... I'm from Aberdeen like they are so would like to think I've got a bit of insider knowledge!
Kudos to Prog Corner! Love the guy.
Good show guys all six bands very good always anored bye the critics
Brian Lane was the brains behind GTR.😀❤️🎼
It's a different situation in the Uk.
I got the Angel albums on import from States .,they never took off here.
Has SOT done an ELO influenced bands segment?
Looking forward to King Diamond ranking with George
I would also add early ELO up to Time album.
It was a real shame that Angel never blew up big. They were the most talented out of all the bands mentioned here.
I remember Angel being marketed as the Anti-Kiss
When I grew up I always regarded pomp as 1/2 way between progressive rock and heavy metal,Styx ,Kansas, starcastle although people will amazingly tell u those bands
have nothing to to with heavy metal
New England S/T ...Mellotron Magic All the Way-!!!!
Screw the critics!
Most forget that Angel put out an album in 1999, "From the Beginning", which was pretty forgettable.
"Most forget" and "pretty forgettable" - we have a match! I believe the album name is 'In The Beginning' though - I've heard it & it didn't do much for me (but then I'm not a big Angel fan)...
Love Opeth Scot
Oh yeah!!!!!!
So what do you guys think of Sparks?
I think Scot is a fan
To be honest I don't use 'pomp rock' as one of my song/album classifications (all of music's in mp3/file form so I can label it any way I choose). To me since pomp's a combination of several other styles that I already do use (rock, prog, glam, AOR, etc) I just label this music under one of those. To me these 'pomp' bands usually will lean more towards one of those component styles on any given song/album so that's what I go with.
The whole 'bombastic' angle to me goes with much of certain types of prog music (that poster band ELP to name just one)...So maybe 'pomp rock' is really symphonic rock in disguise (say like early Queen - although not American)...? Well that would basically exclude AOR/Glam bands - it's just too fuzzy for me, I'll stick with those component genres...
Angel=POMP Epic Majesty. Styled after Queen Casablanca REALLY dropped the Ball not showing 'Angel At Midnight' At Midnight ala Rocky Horror Cult Classic PS Simmons Angel will never open for Kiss LOL 3 chords wonders vs Exalted Grandiosity! LOL
Nice vidéo.😄👍
Queen is occasionally pomp rock
Queen is occasionally pretty much everything!!
I would say so too, it's bombastic and big sounding even without keyboards.
@@LarryFleetwood8675 Queen is actually THE first band that pops into my head when I hear the phrase 'pomp rock' (even though they're obviously not American). Those first two albums (and some others to a lesser extent)...
@@wolf1977 Yes, I've heard them called so before too and they fit the term nicely really should be pictured in the dictionary next to the word, quite honestly. 👑
@@LarryFleetwood8675 ...and a bit weird since the term was supposedly coined by Melody Maker (a British publication) to describe primarily American AOR. Music that the Brits apparently looked at as 'symphonic prog rock' but Americans would probably label as AOR. So the whole thing's a little weird (another reason I chose to stay away from that genre label in my music library)
Yacht Rock 2 yeah
Airborne self titled album from 1979, another pomp classic, just listen to No Exception To the Rule
I consider Angel Pimp Rock.
The only reason most people even know about Angel is because of Frank Zappa’s song “Punky’s Whips”.
yes, all of this stuff is pretty corny and Frank called it instantly. I guess if you're 13 in 1978 this stuff was cool, but for everyone who wasn't, it's just not cool at all.
@@colinburroughs9871 true. Just never my cup of tea.
When I was rocking to Angel, nothing could get me lunging to change the radio like Joe's Garage. 45 years hasn't changed my opinion.. Weird Al had more musicality than Frank Zappa. Keep your weirdo rock out of discussions of real rock.
@@user-fi7ju4nj9b real rock? Lol. You mean real cheese rock. Keep your cheese rock comments out of my thread and go blow dry your hair, that is if you have any hair left. I would gladly listen to Zappa over feathered hair cheesy rockers in white jump suits. I guess you have to find something to rub one out to.
