  • JRR Tolkien created many wonderfully imaginative worlds for the Hobbits and Lord of the Rings. Here you will experience his own world of Oxford where he studied and socialised, where he taught and lived, and where he wrote and worshipped.

    I live alone in a very small flat, in a poor German city, have poor eyesight, and find refuge in my books. I am currently reading 'The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien'. Your video tour was like magic for my reading-mind's eye. Thank you.

    Quite enjoyed the visit to Oxford. Thank you Mister Rob for taken us on this tour (during the 'bike ride' though i did a 'fast forward' - too wobbly for my eyes) Very best wishes across the channel - cheers -

    A very well produced and visually appealing overview of the life of J.R.R. Tolkien in Oxford. It should attract the many fans of Tolkien wishing to know some closer details, the colleges and residence of the great man.
    As an alumnus and past Fellow of Merton College, I naturally appreciated both the history and the views of Merton - often overlooked by various tours of Oxford.
    Once again Rob, extremely well produced, comprehensive in scope and spoken with clarity - splendid in every way :)

    Thank you for a really interesting tour of Tolkien's Oxford; it brought many of those key places to life. One thing, it was Edith who died in 1971, with JRRT surviving her by two years.

      You are so right. No idea why I confused the two dates. Have now added a correction to the video. Thank you for spotting this.

    that's a treat, thanks. I think I'll remember that bike ride for a long time. Tolkien seemed to achieve some perfect median of just enough comfort, but not too much fame, that allowed him to explore his imagination entirely.

    Hwæt ! means litterally "what!" in Anglo-Saxon. It's, of course, the beginning of the poeam Beowulf (Hwæt! We Geardena in geardagum...). Still, this might have been used to get ppl's attention for sure. Clearly Tolkien used it that way. Lovely.

    Are you ever tempted Rob, to turn your attention to some of the towns, which do not have the immediate appeal of Oxbridge, eg, Hartlepool or Harlow ??

    • @RobsOxford
      @RobsOxford  3 роки тому +1

      Not really tempted at present, my channel is quite new and it is Rob's Oxford so I can't stray far from my city. If I were to do so I guess I would be drawn to my roots - I am a Gloucestershire man and have written one book which focuses on Stwo an the Wold.

    Ha, why would he have been impressed by a memorial to heretics?

      Because he wasn't small minded, and they were brave Englishmen killed with the approval of the pope.
