  • Hello lovelies,
The other day I got inspired by Kate Cavanaugh's series where she tries to write like famous authors - go follow her channel !! / @katecavanaugh - and I decided to create a series where I follow some famous writer's advice... but with a cooking twist!
Every time I'm going to follow a writer's routine I'm also going to cook food or brew tea that are inspired by the stories they wrote! Today I'm following Tolkien's five principles for better writing, and that means a lot of hobbit food !
Tolkien is the master of the fantasy genre, he took years planning his maps and developing his lore. I couldn't find a strict schedule that he followed every day when he was writing but his five principles have proven to be very helpful to me !
As for the food, who can say no to a chicken and mushroom hobbit pie and some athelas tea ?
I know it's NaNoWriMo time and many authors are isolating themselves to have some productive writing. Well maybe you'll want to hear those tips and cook those delicious comfort food for when you need some inspiration !
Next time we're going to explore C.S. Lewis principles for better writing, and I can't tell you how excited I am !
Don't forget to subscribe if you haven't already!
See you all next week !
    Tolkien's principle :
1 - Lay the ground work : draw your characters and maps, complete your world building before starting writing your book
2 - The importance of little failures : don't be afraid to re-write chapters you're not happy with. Try many approaches to your storytelling until you find whats suits your story best
3 - Write... with a typewriter. By all means what he meant by that is to avoid wasting time writing by hand if you are eventually going to attempt to publish the manuscript. He was most creative when writing in bed (on his typewriter) with some hot tea!
4 - Write your prose first into poems. Tolkien always used this method to introduce more rythme in his writing.
5 (Bonus) - : Tolkien coined the word eucatastrophe : a happy catastrophe. A sudden happy turn of events, which is the most important trait to a successful fairytale.
    00:00 - 02:13 - Introduction and second breakfast
    02:13 - 07:16 - Principle one : lay the ground work
    07:16 - 10:37 - Principle two : the importance of small failures
    10:37 - 12:53 - Principle three : typewriter and Athelas tea
    12:53 - 13:37 - Principle four : poems above all
    13:37 - 17:45 - Food intermission : making a hobbit pie
    17:45 - 20:02 - Wrapping up my writing day
    20:02 - 22:07 - Principle five : Eucatastrophe

I think I may try the writing in bed and writing in poem to help get the more flowery prose that has be drained out of me because of school and papers. But I also want to work on my history of my fantasy world and get a better hold of the languages I'm using.

I really enjoyed this video! Now I want to watch the Lord of the Rings movies, lol. I've seen several of Kate's vids where she writes like famous authors but I did enjoy your cooking twist. I am excited to see the vid about C.S. Lewis as well.

I'm just wondering whether you can point to anything deriving from what Tolkien said or wrote -- for instance in the Letters or recorded in Carpenter's biography -- that would support the claims you are making. The reason I'm wondering is that most of what is on your list I haven't encountered anywhere before; it could be that you know more, however. But for instance the first item confuses me; I thought he started with the languages, and then moved on to the stories. Then regarding the typewriter: I always had the impression he wrote in longhand first, at least up until the 1950s. While he did type out The Lord of the Rings himself, twice, he wasn't a touch typist and for some reason I have the impression he typed it after it was written. I never heard the story of him typing in bed with tea. I thought he wrote in his study or his converted garage (he moved several times).

Can you update this to include, perhaps in the description, the writing advice you talk about in the video?
