    Those trees at Oxford do look lovely. There are some photos of Tolkien next to a tree or two in the Humphrey Carpenter biography.
    I had heard of punts before, but did not know what sort of boat they were.

    Loved that bit about the Tolkien and Lewis gargoyles!!! That's so fabulous! Wonderful to hear about your impressions of what you saw, as well as heard from the showrunners - and lucky you hearing John Howe!!!

    This is so cool! Love seeing a return of the Kili Adventures 😄
    and re: the window screens: I live in Ireland, and we don't have screens for the same reason AC isn't really a thing in our houses; basically the weather is too wet and cold! We don't usually keep our windows open except sometimes in summer (and then the bugs become a bit of an issue for a while, lol). Really proper internal heating is normally the main concern though!

    Looks wonderful! I have been in Cambrigde but it would be great to visit Oxford too... You asked about windows and bugs. At least in my country (Finland) we do have screens, but not on every window, so it depends. In the night time there are annoying mosquitos, so usually people use screens, if they keep the window open. In the daytime flies are not considered to be such a big problem I guess, so we don't always use them. It also takes some effort to use such screens with triple glazing...But then again, just today, as I had the balcony glasses open, door open, and suddenly there was a bee at the balcony trying to come in, I wished I had all kinds of screens...

    Looks like a fun trip! By the way Cherwell is pronounced /ˈtʃɑːrwɛl/ - long a, e as sort as possible: think “Chaawll”. There’s a spoken audio on the Wikipedia page which sounds about right: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/River_Cherwell

      In a little state with a small population, I would so order it, that, though there were individuals with the abilities of ten or a hundred men, there should be no employment of them; I would make the people, while looking on death as a grievous thing, yet not remove elsewhere (to avoid it).
      Though they had boats and carriages, they should have no occasion to ride in them; though they had buff coats and sharp weapons, they should have no occasion to don or use them.
      I would make the people return to the use of knotted cords (instead of the written characters).
      They should think their (coarse) food sweet; their (plain) clothes beautiful; their (poor) dwellings places of rest; and their common (simple) ways sources of enjoyment.
      There should be a neighbouring state within sight, and the voices of the fowls and dogs should be heard all the way from it to us, but I would make the people to old age, even to death, not have any intercourse with it.

      The Tao that can be trodden is not the enduring and unchanging Tao. The name that can be named is not the enduring and
      unchanging name.
      (Conceived of as) having no name, it is the Originator of heaven and earth; (conceived of as) having a name, it is the Mother of all
      things.
      Always without desire we must be found,
      If its deep mystery we would sound;
      But if desire always within us be,
      Its outer fringe is all that we shall see.
      Under these two aspects, it is really the same; but as development takes place, it receives the different names. Together we call them the Mystery. Where the Mystery is the deepest is the gate of all that is subtle and wonderful.

    12:19 It's great that they can quote things from Tolkien but do they really respect the work? So much of the casting is clearly driven by a very modern political ideology and I don't see how that is respecting the work as it plainly distorts that which was established by the author himself.

      Casting? Political ideology? You fool of a Took!

      Copy and pasting my response to a similar comment: Simon Tolkien is a consultant on the show. No previous production has ever given the Estate a seat at the table. I've met with the showrunners and they and the majority of the cast are among the biggest Tolkien fans you can find. So whether it soars or fails (and this is something one of the showrunners said to me), it's on them.

    • @nicholasfry4253
      @nicholasfry4253 Рік тому

      @@HappyHobbit How are you respecting someone by doing a modern interpretation of their work to suit your progressive agenda? It's quite clear that a lot of politics have gone into the production of the show and I consider that to be disrespectful. The casting choices gives it away and I'm sure the story will reflect modern day attitudes towards race, sex etc.

      @@maksphoto78 Why is the word agenda a conspiracy theory? Amazon doesn't hide the fact that they are advocates of progressive policies but you seem to think that this is a conspiracy theory? They quite literally have an entire website that outlines their agenda.
