The whole goal of prepping before paint is to take out the imperfections like this orange peel. You want it to get matte looking like how I show you in the video. Remember this is not the final grit. We’ll finish it off with 400-grit before we paint.
It’s always good to have clean parts. I sprayed degreaser, hit it with a brush and wash it off. Check out the video as I show you how I use the wax and grease remover on this part.
For every golf ball size of body filler, put 8 drops of hardener. In this example, I put a little more hardener because I want it to harden quickly so we can get things done fast.
As you can see in the video, we’re spraying a good 2-3 heavy coats of Evercoat filler primer on all of our panels. We’ll also do some dry sanding with the use of our DA Sander. Finally, we’ll cut this down with 400-grit wet sand.
You’ll always want to finish by hand because you can feel all the little imperfections and you’ll see exactly how it comes out once it’s painted.
Here’s the Omni Plus. This is a good base coat and it’s about $100 for a quart of paint. Remember, this base coat is a 1:1 mixture with your reducer.
You don’t have to worry about overspray when you’re doing base coat clear coat. It’s not that bad compared to a single-stage enamel paint job. Single-stage enamel paints are very thick.
You can tack between base coat when it’s dry. But, never tack between clear coat.
When spraying your bumper covers, you need to make sure that you’re getting all the areas. You may have to adjust your nozzle from a wide fan to a narrow fan to get into some of these areas.
A lot of times, you’ll see specks of dots in your clear coat. That’s fine because it’s just atomizing on the panel. You might see little bubbles but it disappears after it flows out onto your panel.
You don’t have to be scared of runs when you’re doing clear coat because you can fix it by color sanding and buffing. The only time you have to worry about it is if you’re spraying pearls or flakes in your clear coat. That’s why I really recommend the newbies to just work with clear coats.

When I was 25 yrs old in 1977 I had to learn to paint by using books available at that time. The paints available were lacquer and enamel. I did a total of 3 cars learning as I went along.
I found out the hard way about putting lacquer over enamel without sealing the previous paint or removing it all the way to bare metal. This will come up in your work when you are doing work on cars from the era before the use of clear coats over color.
I am not an auto body man now or then either. I just bought cars that were needing bodywork and got them cheap to sell them later.
I have seen a lot of auto body videos lately and I have not heard anyone say to put more clear on the front of a car so to be able to buff them out in the future without getting into the color. This makes a difference because if you are going to drive it you will be getting scratched and bugs and chipped areas to fix. If you have a very thin clear coat on the car you will be digging into the color a lot of the time making it a bigger problem than a scratch in the clear coat.
Please excuse me if I got any of the words wrong relating to the old type of paints

I, also painted a few cars in the 70s and it was lacquer and enamel. I'm going to jump back in with the new stuff like base and clear coats. I got my glossy shine back in those days with a lot of wet sanding, polishing and buffing.

I’m doing a paint job on my car. Nobody else works on that car, I do everything on it from engine rebuilding to now paint work. I really enjoyed this video, it addressed a lot of my questions and I appreciate that you don’t ignore the teachable moments when you make mistakes. I’ll be looking for your videos first from here on out when I have auto body questions. Keep up the good work.

Great vid. Planning on doing some repairs to damaged trunk on my Cherokee and was thinking about doing the body work and prep myself and having a shop do the paint, but watching this vid gives me the confidence to think I'll give it a go myself. Worse case scenario is I screw it up and it looks awful and I take it back to base and give it to a shop. Best case, I learn from guys like you, do a great job and save a bunch of money and get to have pride in a job well done.

I like that you do things realistically. I learned stuff from the one where the guy takes 750 hours to sand a Corvair door, but I'll never spend that much time with a 48" sanding block of 27000 grit sandpaper while standing in a kiddie pool. I like that you rarely get below 400 and use machines for your initial sanding. It gives me hope that I can get this project done.

I came across your videos while trying to research what possibilities are out there for a pretty bad paint job on a Mustang GT I was hoping to buy. (Trim/door handles all painted, nobody taped anything off, orange peel, dry spray, runs etc) Other than redoing the entire thing, there is no way out of it. (and for the price they're asking, it is totally not worth it! Unfortunately.) So, now, I spent the past few hours digging around your UA-cam channel and learning how to do some fancy stuff lol. My husband is very impressed with your videos (not that that means anything but, lol, he is a perfectionist and is irate about this GT and thinks you do flawless work!) I'm a new subscriber! I am a girl, yes, but, this is all so fascinating to me and I think it's great how you make this all seem so easy and are so enthusiastic and positive for newbies!

Hi Tony, I'm doing the bonnet and new plastic bumper on my 2002 3j6 red Toyota avensis SR. I'm doing it with rattle cans..my bumber is causing me concern as it is raw OEM part. I've read contrasting ways in which to prime the bumper. I'm thinking adhesion promoter 2 coats and 2 coats 2k epoxy primer then 2 coats filler prime then 3 coats base then 2 coats 2k clear...am I right to go with this method or what would you suggest?

In June I am starting the auto tech program at a local Technical College, following up that program I was strongly considering welding or Auto Body. Throughout the duration of my courses I've acquired a 1986 AE86 Corolla to use as a learning tool.

Great Instructional Video, I am not new to auto repair, I was an auto Mech. for 18 years, but I have never painted a car, I am in the middle of restoring a 66 Chevelle and now due to the current economical environment I have decided to paint the car myself and one of my biggest worries was turning my shop into the color that I will be applying to the car but you have shown that will not be the case and you have given me that much more confidence to do this myself, the car is down to bare metal so now my next step will be to start applying filler where it needs, +I will then move onto after all the filler is smoothed out to applying a coat of epoxy primer is this a good idea for the next step? I have to you are very good,
