    • @DutchmansAgates
      @DutchmansAgates  Рік тому +2

      Some specific locations do produce valuable agates, one being Lake Superior, but even then the value is whatever someone's willing to pay for it. The ones that have value are also rare, and the best examples to be had.
      I like agates because there's so many shapes, colors, bands, no bands, transparency, varieties, crystal pockets, etc etc.

      Yeah the ones with banding are definitely more rare, I did fine some though!

      Thank you for asking nicely. This is one spot I keep to myself as I found this one myself, driving down the coast.
      However, the Oregon coast is rich with spots to find agates, some examples include: beaches at and around Tillamook, Pacific City and Liberty city. Signs to look for: gravely beaches that get hit by the tide, allowing agates/jaspers to get washed up. I hope it helps

    How much are these things worth ? and don't say it depends ... please give a price range

    • @DutchmansAgates
      @DutchmansAgates  3 місяці тому

      You say don't say it depends but it depends incredibly on the individual agate.
      It varies from 1-5 dollars per pound for basic chalcedony/carnelian with no banding to up to 1000 dollars per pound for an insanely banded, high quality agate. Location where it was found also plays a massive role, like a Lake Superior Agate or the very rare Fairburn Agates. Color is also a factor - some colors are more rare than others. Then there's also a subjective value to it - one collector might be willing to pay far more than another. I can't imagine the ones I find are worth much, which is completely fine since I have no intention on selling them, that's not my goal of these videos.

      @@DutchmansAgates Flint, for sure, fractures in such a way.

      100% agree -- looks like a portion of a good sized flint nodule. I read through all the replies to make sure I didn't duplicate someone else's comment. Dark brown, reddish brown, slightly translucent on the edges, conchoidal fracture are all indications of flint. It's the same chemical composition -- silicon dioxide -- as agate, jasper, chert, chalcedony, quartz, etc. The clean fracture like that makes it superb for knapping into arrowheads, spear points, other stone tools. Nice find!

      Sim, claro.
      Alguns fazem, tudo depende da qualidade.
      A localização é um grande fator, e os com bandas valem mais.
      Certas cores também são mais raras, tornando-as mais valiosas.
      E claro quanto maior melhor!
      Obrigado por assistir!

    When I hunt I am super focused on agates only. Forget the Jasper jasper jasper and the “ sugar agates”. Brain wanders and the eye may not catch the transparency. I’ve been hunting for 55 years and I’m guessing I have 20,000 agates. Trained eye. I would never bother with video , it’s my beach time alone.

      I hear that, I'm getting pickier and pickier as I do the hobby as well. Jasper especially has to be pretty awesome to take it home anymore.
      It's not too much effort for me to make the video's, and once I started I couldn't stop. Thank you for commenting, and keep enjoying the hobby!
