    *VIDEO SUMMARY:*
    The six holy grail of actives:
    1. Vitamin A (retinol, retinoids, etc)
    2. Vitamin B3 (Niacinamide)
    3. Vitamin C
    4. AHAs (Glycolic acid, Lactic acid, Mandelic acid)
    5. BHAs (Salicylic acid)
    6. Benzoyl peroxide
    *_Beware of combining:_*
    • Vitamin A with benzoyl peroxide. Because benzoyl peroxide is an oxidizing agent, and a retinol is technically an antioxidant. So together they can cancel each other out and be futile, and be very irritating.
    - _How to combine?_
    Spread them out. Use the retinol in one night and the benzoyl in other nights.
    • Vitamin C with vitamin A. It depends really, I don't know how to write this part so just re-watch the video. (9:49)
    • Vitamin A with AHAs. Only if you're a veteran and if you have tolerated the retinol, and retinol with AHAs together. Same is true for vitamin A with BHAs (salicylic acid), just be careful and get acclimated with the retinol first or your face will explode (not literally but you get it).
    *_Best combo:_*
    • Vitamin C with ferulic acid and vitamin E. It's just good.
    • Vitamin C and Niacinamide. It might be very confusing because something... something... (11:58) but studies have shown they boost each other's effects. Combine them all you want.
    • Vitamin C and spf. No brainer, they're good together, they were meant for each other.
    • Vitamin B3 (Niacinamide). They can be paired with everything, the only thing to keep in mind is to keep the percentage of Niacinamide to 2-5%, no need for higher.
    • AHAs with vitamin C. Both are formulated in acidic ph, so they tend to amp each other up. Be aware of this combo if you have sensitive skin.
    • AHAs with BHAs. They're both acids but they work differently, so they don't clash. Just be aware that you don't need a crazy high percentage when combining.
    Moral of the story:
    1. Have a basic skincare routine down.
    2. Don't blow your face out with high percentage concentration
    3. When in doubt, patch test it. If you have sensitive skin, always patch test your product combo. Otherwise, go to town and make a skin routine smoothie.
    Edit: I'm so glad I could help some people out with this comment. We are all in this together to figure out the puzzle that is skincare.

    the biggest issue with combining actives is that skincare brands have become obsessed with releasing products with high percentage actives, when in reality you dont even need that high of a percentage. a perfect example of this is the paula's choice 20% niacinamide, when all studies have been done with 3-5% niacinamide. (and all that costing like 50 euro's??)

    • @charlyjgm

      That's a fair point... but just because there is not a study analyzing those % doesn't mean those % are not effective, and the other way around. It's just that there's no testing.
      Also there will always be someone potentially irritable at any %.

    I think a lot of the challenge is that these "basic" cleansers, moisturizers, and sunscreens, have actives in them, but they're hidden in the "inactive" ingredients list. The basic Eucerin Moisturizing Sunscreen has Lactic Acid in it! I don't want that in my sunscreen, I wanna use it at night where it's not as big a deal if it makes my skin more sun sensitive! I spend way too long just reading ingredient lists at Walgreens just to leave with nothing :(

    One of my favourite combinations are azelaic acid and vitamin A. I use 20% azelaic and 0.1 retinal at the moment. I have a rolling skincare routine, where I alternate this combo with a 10% niacinamide plus 2% BHA (yeah, I tried going lower with niacinamide, my oils only calm down with the higher one). I alternate the two days, and sometimes add a third day of rest/calm if needed (either with just minimal hydration, or with some barrier strengthening serum). Once a week or so I use the blood peel from the Ordinary, and I skip other actives on that day too. If I add vitamin C (which I have a love/hate relationship with), I'd add it in the morning only.

      This is what I’m trying to do. Been on tret 0.05 for 8 months, will be adding in azelaic acid shortly. And then may use glycolic 1 or 2 times a week to exfoliate. How is your skin?

    Hi Dr Shereene this is a bit niche but could you consider recommending what you would do if ones sleep schedule is always switching between day shift and night shift? Would you switch the day and night time skin care schedules around or keep them the same?

    • @lioraelib8787
      @lioraelib8787 2 роки тому +15

      i had a similar sleep schedule situation and i’d say you mostly wanna keep any actives you use where they are, but maybe switch around your moisturizers to use heavier stuff while you’re sleeping. I know at least some things like retinol lose efficacy when exposed to sunlight and obviously sunscreen won’t be useful at night

    • @shj7346
      @shj7346 2 роки тому +7

      The only ones tied to the time of day are SPF, vitamin C, retinoids. SPF for obvious reasons, vitamin C to work actively as an antioxidant, and as well retinoids in general because they tend to break down and become ineffective by light - adapalene is notably much more photostable, though. Retinol was found to work just fine under SPF so you can use it in the day just fine.
      Another mention is mandelic acid, which becomes worthless by light.

      I have the same dilemma because I work on night shift 3x a week. But I’ve tried to apply retinoids and hydroquinone on days that I’m sleeping all day before I go to work. I don’t wear sunscreen since I’m gonna be asleep but making sure my blackout window panel is down and my room is almost in total darkness. So far, it’s still have the same effect.

    • @nataliephipps907
      @nataliephipps907 2 роки тому +5

      I’m a night shifter as well. I use my “daytime” routine when I’m waking up whether it be 9am or 5pm. I also always use my “night time” routine whether I’m going to sleep at midnight or 8am. Just make sure you’re using SPF when the sun is out and using a heavier moisturizer when sleeping.

    Great vid, as usual! The one combo I find conflicting info on is Copper Peptides & tretinoin. I’m not concerned about sensitivity as I have very robust skin. But some sources claim the retinoids will cancel out or “deactivate” the copper peptides. Other sources claim they’re compatible and fine to use together. Who to believe?!

      @@ejbooks Yes but I’m committed to using Vitamin C via ascorbic acid in the mornings which cannot be used with copper peptides. Because of city pollution and strong sunlight, my skin became dull and got dark spots even though I tried many DIY remedies. My colleague suggested trying littleextera rice berry face serum. It gave my skin so fresh moisture and a good mix of black rice water and vitamin C, which made my complexion better. In a few weeks, the dark spots began to fade, and my skin became bright and even. The soothing formula was ideal for my sensitive skin and helped calm irritation from pollution. Now, each morning I see a new glow in the mirror, all thanks to this serum restoring my skin's natural glow.

      Based on my experience, this riceberry serum is highly effective on my skin. It absorbs quickly and avoids making the skin oily. It offers instant brightness to my skin. Just be sure to use sunscreen after using vitamin c serum.

    Dr. Idriss!! I’ve been watching your channel since the very beginning, and I finally have a question I’d love you to answer…!
    (Drum roll) 🥁🥁🥁😂
    I’d like to know if the bottle size of an spf affects the efficacy and durability of the product in the case of a facial sunscreen.
    I never understood why the heck facial sunscreens come in a bottle that would last at most 2 weeks!!!
    I find it’s a waste of plastic and money to have to buy 24 bottles of sunscreen a year, only to cover the face.
    PLEASE, consider making 400 gr quality facial sunscreen on your own brand! (As an example, just please make a big bottle of a quality product!)
    Much love from Switzerland ! 🇨🇭

    Dear doctor. I follow you always. One thing I am interested in knowing more about is deodorants! I have sensitive skin and I worry and get confused about the ingredients etc. would you do a video on deodorants? Eye drops could be incredibly interesting as well. My skin reacts to the fluid of eye drops.. ;(.. Thank you for your great videos ❤️

    • @FilMaltez
      @FilMaltez 2 роки тому +9

      I'm no professional, but from what I gathered from watching various videos/Tik Toks from doctors, aluminum based deodorants/anti perspirants are the only ones effective at stopping you from sweating. I'm really sensitive too and my arm pits often get red and irritated and I use the one from Vanicream which doesn't irritate me. They're actually more effective when you use it at night before you go to sleep. What also helps is using a Benzoyl Peroxide wash in the shower on your arm pits to cut down on odor. I use Panoxyl and you want to leave it on your arm pits for a few minutes before washing off. For eye drops, I looked at a lot of videos from optometrists/ophthalmologists because I had PRK eye surgery a few years back. They pretty much all say to avoid Visine because of the kind of preservative they use (preservatives aren't bad, but that one in particular they don't seem to like but I forget why). They also say to avoid the redness relief drops (including Visine) because they work by constricting the blood vessels in the eyes, but it often causes rebound redness which makes it worse over time. The only redness relief drops I've seen recommended are Lumify because they work differently, but they can cause dry eyes over time, so use sparingly. I was recommended from my doctor the preservative free individual vials from Refresh. I've also seen a few doctors recommend the Optase brand, which come in a more traditional "bottle." Vibeoptometry on Tik Tok and Dr. Eye Health on UA-cam have lots of information! I hope this helps!

      I totally agree with Fil about using a benzoyl peroxide cleanser under your arms in the shower. Since I started doing this daily, or every other day as needed, I don't even wear deodorant or antiperspirant under my arms and I still get no underarm odor!

      @Braake4 Have you ever tried Hylo Comod eye drops or Dermolin deodorant? Both are my go to and the only ones I use. These are European products I believe, so not sure whether these are available to you. Hylo comod is the only one that doesn’t turn to sand in my eyes (recommend by an eye doctor who is a is also an eye surgeon with a PhD) and Dermolin deodorant was recommended by a Dermatologist . When it’s very hot and dry I also put some Bepanthen eczema crème on my armpits to hydrate and nourish the skin. Hope this helps. It’s hard when you’re struggling and don’t get the information that you need.

    Honestly, I have pretty resilient skin. I've done the ordinary's aha/bha exfoliant. However, so many other channels don't recommend combining aha and bha together due to one is water soluble and the other is oil soluble unless they are formulated together. Others have also said combining retinols with acid is not recommended due to retinol converts to retinaldehyde to retinoid acid at our skin's natural pH which is between 4.5-5. Acids tend to have lower pH. I personally combine them, but just wanted experts opinion on whether I'm getting the most bang for the buck.
    I love your channel by the way, you're so funny, informative, and what you're doing clearly works bc your skin is soooooo dewy as Dr. Shah from Doctorly would say. lol
