  • Sure, we hear about violence in Pakistan all the time, but in 2011, more than three times as many people were killed in Karachi than the number of people killed in American drone strikes in the tribal areas. VICE explores the seedy underbelly of this ultra-violent metropolis of more than eighteen million people, and meet the players who make Karachi one of the craziest cities on earth.

With all due respect 7 murders for every 100,000 isn't exactly South America and Caribbean murderous. I lived in Venezuela where there is at least a 100 for every 100,000 And the chances of you not getting killed are higher than the opposite. I also feel the interviewer jumped the gun. He was acting too White in such an area where blending in and connecting with the locals is of utmost importance. The interviewer lacked street smarts plain and simple.

This series kind of was beautiful. I have lived in Karachi my whole life and have to say this is the closest thing Ive seen to expressing harsh realities of Karachi. Sure, it misses out a lot of positive things that happen in the city but it shows what majority of karachiites live in, not just upper class elites. You went to places even I would not dare to go (probably because Im a woman - you must have noticed there was not a single woman who was featured in this).

@@federalboobieinspector it's not nearly perfect (especially with the current political/economic crisis) but it's a world better than a decade ago when this documentary was shot. the pakistan rangers came thru and cleaned the place out very well. so most of the problems of poverty and petty crime are still very bad, but this sort of mafia and political violence has been almost exterminated

Update 2020 and I can't believe when I'm saying this, but Karachi is completely different now. Since operations, Pakistan has turned a complete 180. I remember watching national TV and my father contemplating that Pakistan would become the next Somalia. I can't forget that moment. Few points.
Mqm doesn't exist anymore. It's leader has been cut off from all contact and it's now more of a husk.
    Pakistan is safe, guys.
Also watching smug mqm dudes from 8 years ago vs now is pretty funny to watch. These guys were more dangerous then you'd think. Think about Pablo Escobar but with a political party.

      Here you go dude:
KARACHI: The military establishment on Saturday hinted that the ‘Karachi operation’, which has been going on for the last five years, is not going to end anytime soon and efforts from the armed forces would continue to “further improve the city’s security environment” in the days to come.
According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), senior officials expressed the resolve during a visit of Chief of the Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa to the Pakistan Rangers Sindh Headquarters. He was briefed about the progress and ongoing efforts for maintaining peace in Karachi and other parts of Sindh.
“DG Rangers Sindh Major General Muhammad Saeed gave a detailed briefing about security situation of the province, including law and order in Karachi. The army chief appreciated efforts of Pakistan Rangers Sindh and all other law enforcing agencies towards improving the security environment,” the statement added.
The Rangers-led operation - which was launched in Sept 2013 - has improved the security situation in the city to a large extent as peace was restored to residential and commercial areas after years of bloodshed on sectarian, ethnic and political grounds. However, the city has witnessed a sudden surge in other criminal activities in recent months with street crimes being the top challenge for the law-enforcement and security agencies.
The army chief’s message to continue efforts for “further improvement” and sustainable peace in Karachi suggested that the paramilitary force-led exercise, which had already completed its five years, would continue.
“[The] COAS said that Karachi is the engine of national economy and we shall further improve its security environment so that positive business trajectory is maintained,” the ISPR said, adding that Karachi Corps Commander Lieutenant General Humayun Aziz accompanied the army chief during his visit.
