I love how Godzilla can be a campy, serius, dark, funny, action destruction movies... he can be a monster, a hero an anti-hero a mythical creature.. all of this is why i LOVE godzilla so much.

From my point of view superhero fiction is the sister genre to kaiju/monster stories (especially when we're talking tokusatsu) and your reason why you love Godzilla is also why I continue to love the capeshit, comedy, space opera, horror, crime, sci fi, fantasy, romance, period piece, espionage, post apocalyptic, martial arts, etc. it's extremely flexible

So idk if you guys noticed but the people on Godzilla’s tail was Godzilla evolving again to sprout multiple Human sized Godzillas to combat against humanity, which they just managed to stop by freezing him. Plus there’s this threat that maybe he’ll be unfrozen someday.

This Godzilla isn't malicious in the slightest. The song playing when he first used his mouth laser is called 'Who Will Know?' and it's from Godzilla's point of view.
He's in agonizing pain, has no idea what's happening to him, and nobody will ever know he was anything more than a rampaging monster.
All anyone sees is a monster, not a terrified creature mutating uncontrollably.

Hydrothermal vents piss out radiation all the time and Godzilla lived there. Humans don't even add a percent to it.
Nuclear fear mongering is the biggest culprit of climate change if anything. So these movies just spread even more miss information about nuclear waste.

Shin Godzilla is interesting in particular because its a reflection of how the Japanese goverment handled the Fukushima nuclear reactor incident in 2011 or 2012. Its an interesting framework to make a godzilla movie to nake it not a creature awoken by humanity but a byproduct by it. Also made by the director of Neon Genesis Evamgelion

Having seen Minus One twice now in theatres, I think -1 is a finer piece of cinema. It deserves every bit of It's praise.
But Shin still holds my #2 spot behind 1954.
I was lucky enough to also see it in a theatre, and the destruction of Odo ward was incredibly powerful.

Violence is what gets him in Minus One. While the scientist’s plan weakened Godzilla it didn’t kill him or stop him. The pilot’s last-ditch attack did.

Both are solid movies that people don't really need to compare or taking sides of. I'm glad I can enjoy & love both Shin & Minus One but also can still have some silly fun with the Monsterverse movies.

However, the Japanese title "シン(shin)" is written in katakana, which makes the meaning ambiguous.

"Shin" in the context of Shin Godzilla means "True God Incarnate"
Godzilla's design and concept for the movie was very body and cosmic horror with the way it kept evolving and would have kept changing had it not been stopped as seen with the mini human zilla's in that very last tail shot. It was originally written to have more forms after but they decided to cut a lot of it for this grim ending.
The meaning of Shin depends on the kanji character used, but in this case it is most likely either Shin meaning "new" or Shin meaning "god", rather than Shin from Shinzo meaning "heart"
it's "new" or "true". In this case it's both because in the movie the word "Gojira" mean "A god incarnate" so it's "The new Godzilla" or "The true god incarnate"
In this case it's meant to have a multifaceted meaning, so the ambiguity of it only being written in katakana is wholly intentional.

• 真実 (shinjitsu)
- This is the word for truth
• 心臓 (shinzo)

- The title of *Neon Genesis Evangelion* in Japanese literally means "New Century Evangelion"

Anno has stated in an interview that in the title, シン (shin) is specifically Katakana rather than a kanji with an explicit definition because it makes an ambiguous term to be ANY/ALL of those things. This is also why later films Shin Ultraman & Shin Kamen Rider follow that same naming convention.
Japanese is rather unique in being able to have a lot of versatile homophones that can remain unspecified even in writing, but it also means that it's flat out impossible to actually translate the title into another language, which is why it's just kept as "Shin Godzilla" instead of just picking any one singular possible translation.

Such a great reimagining for Godzilla. Great characters, great story especially coming off the 311 earthquake/tsunami disaster, the music is amazing as always and Godzilla was amazing. But we can all agree that minus one is the Goat 🔥🔥🔥

Channel needs more Achara Kirk
A script that's 99% exposition is not a good story and characters used for the exposition dumping is not what makes a character good.
But shin obviously isnt going for strong story and characters.
It's focus is solely on political commentary and sending a message.
It was a bit shocking, for me, how good this movie was.
Everything about the movie was tight: the editing, the filmography, the script, the acting, the music, the vfx.
I'm not bothered by the look(s) of Godzilla because it's a clear homage to older versions.

This film really spoke to the Japanese psychology because it made a mockery of Japan's slow political response to the Fukushima disaster.
And it also heavily referenced Japan still being under the yoke of American control.
Obviously neither of those things would be obvious to you.

This film, much like the Original Gojira, was made in response to something. The Original was made in response to the Atomic attacks, as well as the Nuclear tests on Bikini islands. This one is a scathing response to Japan's lack of response to the Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami and the resulting Meltdown at Fukushima. Anno-Sensei was *very* angry about what happened

In fact, Godzilla is the one of the keystone for Japanese culture alongside Akira Kurosawa. He’s a major influence for Tokusatsu medium which then spill into Anime medium.

Most Toho Godzilla movies don't have a sequal. They are usually standalone with an ambiguous ending.

The two things I'd recommend beyond digging in to the history and parallels to the 2011 Fujushima Daiichi disaster for this film:
1) Looking at the history of Chisso-Minamata disease, as not only is it connected to dumping waste from the post-war weapons, but the region affected was what inspired Hayao Miyazaki to write Nausicaä which was the film that allowed him to make Studio Ghibli and Anno to make Studio Gainax, so the physical deformations in Shin Godzilla's biology match a lot of what were caused by that poisoning of the water supply.
*_Minus One_* built on those themes in its portrayal of Godzilla as being like a Tatarigami (curse god) similar to the ones in *_Princess Mononoke_* which was Miyazaki's first film upon completing the Nausicaä manga, and based on the same forest region of Japan. He was doing that while Anno was doing *_End of Evangelion_* and when Anno returned to *_Rebuild of Evangelion_* he took a break and did *_Shin Godzilla_* before completing it.
2) Knowing all that history, looking up the lyrics to "Who Will Know" which is the song that plays during the night attack on Tokyo. The lyrics represent the emotions of Godzilla as a tragic figure who is living a life in constant agony, but who is still desparate to stay alive.

I don't know if you guys caught it but his tail was splitting apart at the end into humanoid godzilla creatures, meaning he was about to evolve again to specifically combat humanity.
A good bit of the music is from other Godzilla movies. I love this movie because it deals more with the horror aspects, even the "Muppet" design is creepy. Then there's the idea that if it wasn't stopped it would evolve to potentially be a threat to everything. The last shot being giant "Humanoid" kaijus to specifically battle humanity that was cut and a 7th or 8th form in the writing where Shin evolves into an omniscient being that becomes the universe
Minus One is pretty much the fusion of the best stuff about this and the OG 50s movie. Although this one originally acts purely on instinct rather then any thought

Godzilla from the director of Neon Genesis Evangelion, even he used one of the incidental themes "angel attack" from the series during the planning scenes.

Fun fact: shin Godzilla evolved from a type of shark known as the frilled shark.
I'm not sure if it was evolved FROM the eel shark/frilled shark specifically but you're close, Godzilla's second form, the one that crawled around in the streets, is officially described as having the head of an eel shark.
As for what it evolved from, Goro Maki's essay on the possible origin of Godzilla is included in the art book, and he speculates that its original form must have had very large claws and fangs to feed on the barrels of nuclear waste, which frilled sharks don't have either of as far as I can tell. He goes on to suggest it must have spent its whole life underwater and is likely related to prehistoric marine reptiles from the Paleozoic era. I don't know about specific eras but the frilled shark IS said to bear many similarities to prehistoric sharks so they probably are at least closely related to Godzilla's original form
The director of Shin wanted it to be very documentary style, so you're right about that. If he got it all his way, the music would have been much less audible. He wanted it to be center channel mono. Instead, they made him go with front stereo, center and subwoofer. That's the main reason the music is so low because you aren't getting a surround experience.
Godzilla's form at the beginning is that of a fish, so the "muppet" eyes are just fish eyes. And I am not sure if anyone has the theory that the boat at the beginning was vacated by the scientist they mention later in the movie. I believe he committed suicide but he actually became part of Godzilla. That's why the boat is found abandoned. The scientist jumped overboard and merged with the sea life in the bay.
Don’t forget if he had everything he wanted we would have seen fission beings from his tail and his humanoid form that has a tranquil look. Truly we never got to see annos full Godzilla it would have been a nightmare

The title of the movie is "シン・ゴジラ(Shin Godzilla)" and it's written in Katakana, a type of Japanese alphabet. The alphabet itself has no meaning, but the word Shin could be written in several Chinese characters such as "新(new)", "真(true)", or "神(God)". There is no official explanation of the true meaning of the title, and I think they did it deliberately to let us see many aspects of this movie.
This movie is one of my favorite Godzilla movies of all time, i don't get bored wich is weird because i used to get bored with political stuff xD

This type of godzilla never dies,the only way is to finish it completely to ashes or freeze it as shown,if you fail it regenerates like a starfish and evolves into a new bigger better form
As someone that grew up watch Godzilla way back in the 80s. TOHO always make him look very scary, Minus One version actually made me say. They need to kill this thing. Shin Godzilla never made me think that all, but I like the idea how they stopped him. BUT I do hope a new Minus One movie comes someday. Interesting also is how Shin and Minus One version are. So different. One is a rampaging monster, while the other wants to destroy without mercy. Minus One actually went after people. Shin was defending himself most of the time. Plus Shin Godzilla wasn't done evolving. Shin Godzilla had the most unique version of him.

You guys misunderstand the last scene, there weren’t dead people on the tail, it was Godzilla’s next form as it is splitting into humanoid forms probably with intelligence, implying they froze it just in time otherwise human civilisation would be fuxked.
But the lady would still be hot.

The only reason I would want a sequel to this is to see what their idea of godzillas' next evolutions would look like, I know theres concept art for it and it's been talked about but I'd like to see it. Either way the idea of never knowing and having my imagination just wonder is just as good as well

Showing the convolutions of the government decision-making process is a huge departure from most other Godzilla movies, where the military just pops up in full-force. My favorite scene is when he's slowly stomping through town and our POV appears to be from a moving car flanking him from a block or two over.

I recently saw someone contrast this movie with Godzilla 1985/Return of Godzilla. In that movie, Japanese politicians being cautious and thoughtful, slow acting, looking things over, focusing on projecting calm, and preventing others from acting in haste was portrayed as a good thing and their greatest strength.
When comparing this and Godzilla Minus One, Shin Godzilla has my favorite version of the Big G. Godzilla Minus One has my favorite human story. If you combined the two you would have the Voltron of Godzilla movies.
I agree with your assessment of Shin and Minus One! For me, Gojira 1954 is already the Voltron of Godzilla movies! Best overall combination of Godzilla Rampage Metaphor and Human Storyline. 😁

The way this movie utilizes the Hiroshima Bombing is what got me feeling emotional. Japan has been through so much man.
I remember when I was five seeing the English version of the original Godzilla it was dubbed with the exception of Raymond Burr narrative throughout the movie….Burr died at the end of the movie…Burr was starring in the Perry Mason popular series at that time….not knowing the difference between movies and real life….I woke up my mother and remembered telling her Perry Mason died….😢

Yeah the one thing about this Godzilla is it was more showing how the government would truth really react to these kinds of things and the problem with the Japanese government. But not only that it's surprising that they defeated this one so easily because this is easily the strongest Godzilla ever created. To be able to constantly involve to the problem. The whole reason why you see the little humanoid looking things at the end is because he realized the little things that were attacking him were a problem so he was evolving to deal with them and then eventually each one of those individual little humanoid Godzillas would evolve and overrun the planet and they will continue evolving and expanding until it gets literally insane and more or less Godzilla actually becomes a god of his own universe by the end of everything. Like you should really look up a video on what was supposed to be shown in the second movie before they canceled it, it would have literally been the most insane out there Godzilla movie ever created and nothing would probably ever come close to it after that but I also believe that shin Godzilla is one of those movies that are perfect as a one-off. But you should look up some of those videos once you get the chance jaby. It's really interesting

It took until Godzilla appearing as actual Godzilla with the design we know for me to really get into the movie. Really took off from there and was good. But my God I cannot wait until people start doing videos for Minus One.

What’s great about this version of Godzilla is that he’s not an ancient alpha predator, he’s a mutant. He’s an unnatural force of destruction with only one goal, to destroy everything.
But what I really love about this movie is that they it shows a very believable scenario of how world governments would react to Godzilla and how they would work through all the bureaucratic BS to come together and take out that monster.
I disagree. This Godzilla never intentionally destroyed anything, except those that attacked him. It was as confused and scared as the humans. This Godzilla is just an animal trying to survive.

This Godzilla was constantly evolving. Dude, his first evolution that we saw was spilling blood from his body.

Awesome movie!! By the away at the end of the movie, just before credits, where Godzilla is frozen take a closer look at its tail, even pause it and zoom in. It foreshadowing what would happen if Godzilla would not be stopped, something that would be even more horrifying then Godzilla it self...

The fun of this movie is showing how inadequate the government is which is commented on Minus One too. This was such a fun movie.

Godzilla Minus One was incredible Jaby! Definitely hoping for a sequel with that same level of gripping intensity!

This, then G -1, Godzilla films are getting so much more interesting. Gojira can be central, tangential, one or more metaphors, pretty much anything. So great, just so great.
Godzillas kinda like the god of war, he's known for his battle's, the destruction, the deaths, he leaves in his wake, or the pure brutality of his strength unleashed but that isn't all he is.
They literally depict Ares in the pantheon as He embodies the physical valor necessary for success in war but can also personify sheer brutality and bloodlust. (case in point to some he may be a protector or a destroyer, depending on the movie or incarnation)

Godzilla is a radioactive dinosaur that can regenerate due to being irradiated by the Hydrogen Bomb tests in the late forties/early fifties. And you can always try out the other films in the universe by either renting some on Max/Apple + or buying the Criterion Collection for the Showa Era, the Toho Collection Blu-Ray for the Heisei, Millennium Era, and Mothra and Rebirth of Mothra spinoff trilogy, and Tokyo Shock and Toho Master collection for the spin-off movies that are canonized to the universe but not Godzilla movies but those are only mostly DVD sadly.
So the best way I've heard it described is that the three main Godzilla disaster movies are basically the same story from three different perspectives. Gojira 1954 is from the perspective of the media and the scientists, Shin Gojira is from the perspective of the Government and officials, and Godzilla Minus One is from the perspective of the people down there getting stepped on. Each carry a unique message and allegory. 1954 on the proliferation of Nuclear weapons, Shin on the Japanese government and how they "handled" the Fukushima disaster, and Minus One themed around post war recovery ptsd and the evolution of the Japanese's social views on life and what happened during the war.
Watching this over, minus one payed some homage to shin as well
