- Have a rattle or vibration coming from under your 4Runner with aftermarket skid plates? We did too. In this video we'll show you what the likely cause is and exactly how to fix it, permanently.
We install an innovative, new design of a transfer case skid plate from LFD Offroad that completely eliminates the vibration noise caused by the exhaust pipe touching the skid plate.

Finally someone has come up with a permanent solution.
Before I installed my RCI skids I came across a vid on UA-cam that went over the “rattles”. Some exhaust wrap secured with SS wire ties was the fix. I haven’t had any issues. I will say that I after most off-road rides I do wash out the under carriage thoroughly. Ronny Dahl’ s video on how to get the crap off your vehicle after a week, or so off-road. No issues yet- knock on wood. Good to know if mine fails there’s a more permanent solution. Another good video. TY
Thanks for the video. I already had the engine and transmission plates from RCI and bought the LFD transfer case plate after watching this video. I love how the LFD one both solves the rattle issue and is a single piece as opposed to a separate plate and bracket like everyone else seems to do.
Glad it helped!!!
As always, great video. Have nothing but positive things to say about LFD. Use their 3/4 roof rack and they have been a great company to work with.
Thanks Jody!
Thx for video and product recommendation. I’ve got some kind of vibration in the front of my 4Runner that sounds like a skid plate. Hopefully not the needle bearing - it’s only a 2022 SR5. Anyways, on to more vids searching
Your video was excellent, We have a 2007 4runner limited 2wd just started making this rattling noise only in reverse. I will check if there is debris around the skid plate.
Thank you for the help:). Your the best!
Dave
Glad it helped
Lfd off road, great company and great guys out of North Carolina.
We had the pleasure of talking with them, in person, on two occasions. Yes, super nice people and very committed to producing unique products for us.
You guys really use you're truck by the look of the underside, good for you .
We do indeed use the heck out of it, with the scars to prove it.
Thanks for watching!
Love your videos - the team work - and the loving passion for making this wonderful content and sharing with us, thank you!!
Thanks for posting this tip. I have been chasing down my noise in D and R for awhile.
Glad to help
FYI all, denting the pipe a little to clear will not cause any HP loss. You have to REALLY crimp it to make a diff. There is a video from motor trend where they beat the hell out of the exhaust and ran it on a dyno. You would be surprised at what you can do.
thank you for posting this. I have been chasing this noise for months.
It drove us nuts too! Thanks for watching David.
we love our LFD offroad skids. We even have the same transfer case skid, transmission skid, front wide skid, hidden winch mount, full length roof rack, and their accessory plates! ...maybe doing a rear bumper someday too. 😁
LFD does make some top notch stuff. What impresses us most with them is their willingness to think "outside the box" when designing their stuff.
@@WanderlostOverland ...and they listen to their customers. That's probably the best thing for me.
If the feul line bolt breaks, just weld gas line to ....for extra support.
Love your videos, the outtakes really have me cracking up
We're happy that you enjoy them! And thanks for watching!
Nice vid as usual. Been thinking about adding their cross bars to my stock roof rails. Thanks.
Thanks for watching Paul, again!
I know LFD and like the roof rack cross bars I have. However, why can't you just drill some 1.5" holes in the transfer skid where the exhaust comes into contact due to rocks? Might be cheaper and should solve the problem. I currently consider to get the RCI skids since I can save big on shipping as the company is only a 30 minutes drive away.
LFD has some good stuff for the 4runner
Great video! Are they compatible with FJ Cruiser?
I believe they are.
Its about time... Where have you been !
My 4 Runner 2020 had the same problem, I didn't know where to look until now, thank you. Do you think Toyota will fix this as part of the warranty ?
Thanks for watching! Not likely Toyota will ever honor it under warranty.
That cross member you tapped with your screw driver at 4:07...some installations show both the cross members being removed before skid plates are installed. Shouldn't they be removed?
I had the LFD skids installed below the two diagonal crossmembers - it works, but the flanges don't sit flush against the frame. SO I removed the crossmembers. It sits flush against the frame, but now I have a rattle when in reverse.
@@ReimerKeith I had the same problem. I put the cross members back on and every thing is fine now. Unless you use spacers the exhaust will make contact. Its just annoying that flanges aren't flush.
@@alexalanis4830 Added spacers. Problem seems to be fixed.
Another great video. Thanks
Love this, thank you!
You're very welcome, and thank you for watching!
wow.. this is my problem thanks
You are most welcome!!!
Nice video. Thanks!!
Thank YOU!
I actually removed the skid and left the large cross-member. Question: when I removed the skid, some of the welded nuts inside the Toyota frame member broke. Would a rivnut work here?
A lot of people use rivnuts there. If we can, we simply drill right through the top of the frame or support and use a long bolt.
My 2020 4R TRD ORP has been doing this since new!! A few miles off the lot! Smh
Well I simply added 1" spacers and drilled 4 1" holes under pipe...done.
Would you recommend LFD’s skid plates? I have a guy offering me one for $275 now.
Yup, very well made!
@2:02 strong Will Ferrell energy
Do FJs have this rattle problem also? I am wondering ad I have not put a skid over the transfer case yet.
Our FJ has the same problem.
Wanderlost Overland would this skid fit an FJ cruiser.
Why not just cut out the section the exhaust contacts?
I want to know as well. No need to buy another plate that replaces the existing plate.
It's our thought that a hole that size would catch on a protruding rock and cause major damage.
See the Ontario flag in the back one of you from Canada?
Not from there, but have spent a lot of time exploring Canada.
Cringe
Thanks for watching Michelle!
