Yeah totally. Robb’s picking technique is crucial. I’ve spent more time in recent years focusing on the tone I get from my right hand. Trying to find the right balance of weight but aggressiveness. I’ve always picked hard, but used to use heavier picks (1.14 - I used .88 now) and I try and get more scrape in the tone
@@JoshMiddletonOfficial that's cool to know. I don't really like the feel of thin picks but I should try it out. Gosh, the world of guitar playing is so cool when you think about it. Changing little things can be so satisfying in the end.

This James friend you mention (maybe not in this video but in the "guitars without eq" more recent video), is it the James Stephenson that was on the Andy Sneap forum backthen and had a sick ass solo project (can't remember the name right now) ?
Super cool, Josh, please do more of these! I love your plugin and use it it regularly, but am a pretty poor tone crafter myself. So seeing these breakdowns is awesome for folks like me who need a starting point for new tones.
Had the RRU album when it came out also the live DVD, was reading the article/podcast of Monte Conner about how the project came together, and this came up, love it! Keep up the good work Josh love from Taiwan 🇹🇼

Till this day one of my favorite albums ever! 13 years old a wee-lad, going to the free record shop, saw the cover, Saw roadrunner, I thought hmm I think slipknot is on that label.
asked to listen a bit in the store (yes, that was possible then) That opening song The Dagger, that blistering guitar, Rob and Howard just Blazing over the top, I was hooked. Something came over me and till this day I listen to this album. amazing!
Wish I could pick your brains on Monolith tone. There’s something about the lead tones on that I fell in love with and ofc your playing. 🎸🔥
Thanks! That was my Les Paul with a Holy Diver pickup through the Maxon OD808 into the Gower modded JCM 800 (“Sylosis mod”), into a Marshall 1960TV cab and an Orange angled 4x12. Maybe I’ll dig out the raw files. I can’t say I likes those tones personally. I engineered the guitars for that one but I was in a weird phase in that era. I’ve always been a 5150 guy but was experimenting with other stuff but was never that into it

Dino's tones sounded great too, but Rob's just seemed...bigger, somehow.
Love it! I really miss the 2000's guitar tones. While I think drum mixing has come a long way since those days, I feel like guitars have gotten a lot duller and less interesting in general. Glad guys like you are keeping the older vibes alive!
Would you mind going over your drum sound for this demo? Gonna guess you are using Superior Drummer due to the Kick X-1 Track. Could you tell us what samples you are using and how you are mixing them?

I agree. My aim for the latest Sylosis mix was that classic era of guitar tones but with a more modern drum sound.

Would love to see a remake of the general rhythm tone of "The More Things Change..." from Machine Head. Songs like Ten Ton Hammer. Incredible high gain tone
That’s one of my favourite tones. Think it’s the 5150 “Bubba” amp, a Marshall cab and 2 x 421 microphones. Potentially the older 421 mics which aren’t quite as spikey at 4.3k

I think this was Made of Metal with some samples blended in. I'm working on my own drum library though which I'm hoping to have ready very soon! So keep your eyes peeled if you like the drum tones I get

You rekon The Blackening is similar? Robbs used the same 5150 head since Burn My Eyes/The More Things Change I think, it’s called Bubba and it supposedly only ever comes out when recording lol
I’m pretty sure it would be the same head, same recording studio and engineer. Maybe not the exact same cab but probably a Marshall 1960B. I heard they added a 4k spike over the whole mix in the mastering stage to make the guitars cut more. I may have totally misremembered that though!
@@JoshMiddletonOfficial If I remember correctly, in the documentary they ordered some 1960BV cabs from Guitar Centre for it too, so 2005/2006 V30s. Funny you mention adding 4k in post, there's some harshness coming from the crashes in that area on The Blackening and that may be why.
