Both, the machine and the included Cubase are not made for beginners ;) In your case you will also have some fun with "Utility - Quick Setup". Recording to an Audio-Track in a DAW shouldn't be not a big deal. Only those shortcuts of your machine are pretty messing around. After you choosed "Audio Rec to DAW" it is still not ready. Yamaha is not famous for its explanations; in this case, how to change and save those "presets". Possible ... "explained"... but typical Yamaha-style. So what I do ... Advanced editing (mixing/appending/pregressive construction aso.) requires some tricky thoughts. And those are explained nowhere. But at least I proved that everything is possible ... without a DAW! Nevertheless I made my way around the sequencer, since I also want to record directly to USB stick. Converting sequences to arps, trigger them (with one key) or using scenes to change them ... possible. Many possibilities of adjusting arps accordingly. I even do this with extensive (drum-)sequences. The only limit then is the amount of arps you can save in the machine. At me: 256. I love the drum arps. When i had a sy77 long time ago I made my own. But Yamaha has some very good ones that I can't duplicate tbh. So let's say i want to do an arp in the drums i just keep the keyboard light on?

Hello and thanx for this video! I want to recreate a song. One scene consists of the length of 5. But in the 5th one I want the time signature to be 3/4, instead of 4/4. Is there any way to do this? Thanx in advance!
Sadly I don’t think so. The time signature becomes global on every performance and it’s scenes. However the way you can do it is by having all your 4/4 scenes in one pattern and then make another performance and another pattern with the 5/4 or different time signature and glue them together in song mode. So record mode you press>edit job>Song and build the song with to different patterns. I hope this helps.
@@edgaba I didn't know I can glue Patterns in song mode. What I usually do is , use the pattern and changing scenes on the go (which helps me, as I later realized, to deal with my time signature issue). I will definitely try song mode though! This helped me a lot, thanx !
I don’t know much about arpa since I don’t really use them however, I do know that the tempo of the performance is global for that performance so all the aros would share the tempo of that performance. You may be able to set a different tempo in a scene within that performance. Example let’s say in the performance scene 1 is set to 120 BPM and scene 2 to 100 BPM you have to save it on each scene and then store the whole performance again so it gets saved. Think of a performance as the co trainer of all the tracks l, aros and all the settings, They can be different from scene to scene within the same performance. I hope this helps.

Go to File and select Export Audio/Video 3. In the Rendered Track dropdown, select All Individual Tracks 4. Ensure Render Start and Render Length cover the entire arrangement 5. In the Export Audio/Video dialog, select Include return and master effects 6. Choose a sample rate and bit depth that matches your session settings 7. Turn off Normalize 8. Click Export 9. Name the stems and choose a save location I hope this helps.
When using an external midi controller connected into the modx, seems like I’m having a difficult time switching the track channels with external midi controller. It’s only allowing me to play on track 1…could you solve this problem ?
Here is something I read that might help. “You have 3 modes on the MoDX / Montage for receiving midi messages form another device: Multi: here every part on the performance is fixed to the corresponding midi channel (part 1 = channel 1, part 2 = channel 2, … , part16 = channel 16) Hybrid: here every part under keyboard control is fixed to the main midi channel (that can be selected), all other parts are handeled like in multi mode Single: all parts are assigned to the main channel (that can be selected in utilities) Multi mode is the classical GM midi mode - you can play each an every channel by sending data on the corresponding channel. Hybrid/Single is kind of a workaround for playing the parts under keyboard control from an external keyboard. E.g. you want to play a piano sound that is using 4 or 5 parts (e.g. the CFX concert) from an external keyboard. In Hybrid mode you can additionally play the parts not under keyboard control by using the corresponding channel. An issues comes up when you need to play two (or more) parts not under keyboard control. Here the external master keyboard needs to send messages on two (or more) midi channels. This is not possible on all masterkeyboards (e.g. my Arturia Keylab is only able to send on ONE channel). There is no direct way of solving this issue. On idea is to use a midi processor (MIDI solutions box). Another idea is to use an iPad/Notebook with MainStage, Camelot Pro or the new Steinberg Live system). This systems allows you to map the channels… For sending data from the MoDX/Montage to another board you need to use the midi zone master functionality - here you can assign the midi channel for without limitations. In my opinion it depends a lot on the use case if this is an limitation or not. I do seldom play sounds from another keyboard so I‘m mostly fine with the implementation. Most of the time there are iPad (with Camelot Pro) and / or notebooks involved and I could bypass this issue easily. In other words: this is a absolutely low prio restriction for me. But I agree with Derek that this is kind of a stupid limitation and I don‘t understand why Yamaha not at least implemented a mapping function / matrix function to map the midi channel freely.” Can I ask why do you wanna control the MODX from another controller?
Thanks for sharing this info. The reason why I wanted to use another midi controller so that when I’m creating a beat pattern that it’s easy to use on my keyboard controller being that it’s not heavy weighted. I find it easier making a drum groove on less weighted keys. I enjoy creating ideas on my MODx8
Thank you so very much for replying. So many of these vids and the authors don't answer questions. I will try again. I thought i did save the performance. But i guess not. Sorry to be such a noobie. I'm an old school musician, i'm in over my head but loving it.@@edgaba
I don't understand this at all 6:25. You said "record something" . You hit the record button but the position doesn't change . did you step record? Mine doesn't record when I do this. Very confusing. This isn't sequencing. Sequencing is when you put notes in a sequence and then play them. This is recording parts.
At 6:25 precisely the record button is not activated, just playing keys. That cannot be seen cause video is just showing sreen, not buttons. 10s later you hear the metronom because the record button was hit and recording process launched.
While I’m pattern mode next to the time signature you have a dukes called position this is where you can punch in from any measure in the pattern. Also while in pattern mode and the pattern is playing there is an erase function where you can erase by note any mistakes. I hope this helps. 😎🎶
@@edgaba My previous keyboard, the Korg M3 wasnt like that. For example, I'm recording a track, I make a mistake on the 8 measure, I restart on the 8th measure and continue recording, and ONLY the mistake in the 8th measure gets deleted. I guess all workstation keyboards are not the same when it comes to sequencing.🤷♂
Thanks for the tutorial,... Yamaha created an extremely clunky interface for this "platform" overly complex and confusing, Everything should default to a song, and midi recording should be separate from assigning the midi tracks to what patch or voice the midi tracks are assigned to . OFF COURSE there should be an option to write to any kind of wavefile one wants. LIKE MP3 or 4 and wavefiles for CD format or blueray or anything ( 16 bit words or 24 ) . This sorta seems like it's geared to weekend warriors who play small gigs or amateurish productions for video, with a lot of unnecessary jargon thrown in so the user will think they are professional, by virtue of owning a piece of gear. What is missing is simplicity, ease of use and, and flexibility that is easily accessible. I just got one, and haven't even tried it yet. Just getting myself familiar. This models itself after a Montage I guess, cheaper lighter with all the features, ..but it seems to lack all the common sense stuff that I also hate about a montage, so I guess we will see. Ultimately I guess it just makes most sense to get a cheap but good midi keyboard controller and a good sequencer + wavefile audio workstation platform for a computer and use the computer prog to manipulate everything, if You are serious about doing music production. Looking forward to a video that steps through a bunch of the "patches" for the resident voices. I imagine someone must sell libraries for this synth that can be stored internal in the MODX-7? i sure hope so. Otherwise all these patches, hearable here, sound same old same old Yamaha voices. Grand Pianos pretty good. Horns, strings guitars, drums, not too great, a bunch of WOWwwy effect voices that are perfectly useless ,... etc.
Yes. Originally the MODX did not have a sequencer it was aimed strictly at live playing. The sequencer was requested and they added it in an update and in order to fit the existing architecture it became incredibly confusing. Once one follows the correct steps you’ll find that it is very powerful but a bit frustrating. The best way to use it in my opinion is to pair it with an iPad and Cubasis, that works like a charm. I personally prefer to record the tracks as audio instead of midi and I’ve achieved really good results. I believe the MOdX to be a great keyboard for playing live. For sequencing ideas is okay but it does lack all the other mixdown features that now a days should be standard.
Seems to me that when designing Montage (and of course MODX is really "Montage Lite") Yamaha decided that "no one uses hardware sequencers anymore because everyone just does it in their DAW." Frankly, I think they were stunned to learn how many people still want the sequencer to be right there in the instrument. Hence the OS updates adding the Pattern Sequencer. But I agree, it can be confusing to use because by default it already has so much going on like the Keyboard Control and the Arps defaulting to "On." I think setting up a template from the Initial setting is a great idea. You just start from scratch and nothing is there until you put it in. I find it easier to work this way. Nothing wrong with all the supplied complicated performances already being there--you can always use them if you want. But when creating a sequence, especially when using the sequencer to compose as a sort of "scratch pad", being able to have a basic template always there ready to go makes a lot of sense to me. Thanks for uploading this video.
That part about convert to audio … not really intuitive … it’s strange, these days we have better, faster electronic devices , smaller components … I feel like a time traveler that goes 15 years back.

Weird I don’t remember saying anything about the arp. I don’t ever use it really. I didn’t mean to offend anyone and I also didn’t mean to come across like lecturing, just making a video that may help someone that is as confused with this sequencer as I am haha
I stand corrected. I don’t use the arps and frankly I don’t understand them, specially the drum patterns. I find them confusing and I don’t think they sound good compared to other drum patterns included in other Yamaha products. I didn’t really mean to offend anyone and I apologize if I did. Again, I just wanted to make a video that might help someone that wants to use the sequencer on the MODX

Personally I almost never use the arps, maybe for a drum loop. I like to play all the parts live.
I love the drum arps. When i had a sy77 long time ago I made my own. But Yamaha has some very good ones that I can't duplicate tbh. So let's say i want to do an arp in the drums i just keep the keyboard light on?
How do you get your quantize setting on that screen? I had to go into settings to find the quantize. Also where is the LOOP setting? Its also not on my performance screen
When you select a track to record and press a record button,Quantize and loop settings appear
how to make a loops click track!?
Excellent!!!
Does that have a STEP mode like earlier Yamaha Sequencers? thanks.
I don’t think so.
How do you change the arpeggio tempo while on a Live performance?
I don’t know much about arpa since I don’t really use them however, I do know that the tempo of the performance is global for that performance so all the aros would share the tempo of that performance. You may be able to set a different tempo in a scene within that performance. Example let’s say in the performance scene 1 is set to 120 BPM and scene 2 to 100 BPM you have to save it on each scene and then store the whole performance again so it gets saved. Think of a performance as the co trainer of all the tracks l, aros and all the settings, They can be different from scene to scene within the same performance. I hope this helps.
many thanks, simple and easy to understand, the owner's manual is... meh..
Thanks !
hey man you're the best youtuber in the world! my mother is dying and I'd like to know if I can export a song in her memory from ableton on different tracks?
First let me say I’m sorry your mom is not well she will be in my prayers. Second I don’t know what version of Ableton you have, assuming it’s Live do the following :
To export stems in Ableton Live, you can do the following:
1. Select the entire arrangement
2. Go to File and select Export Audio/Video
3. In the Rendered Track dropdown, select All Individual Tracks
4. Ensure Render Start and Render Length cover the entire arrangement
5. In the Export Audio/Video dialog, select Include return and master effects
6. Choose a sample rate and bit depth that matches your session settings
7. Turn off Normalize
8. Click Export
9. Name the stems and choose a save location
I hope this helps.
@@edgaba haha, thanks
@@edgaba that's why you're the best in the world man. one other question, does ableton support bofadeez files?
When using an external midi controller connected into the modx, seems like I’m having a difficult time switching the track channels with external midi controller. It’s only allowing me to play on track 1…could you solve this problem ?
Here is something I read that might help. “You have 3 modes on the MoDX / Montage for receiving midi messages form another device:
Multi: here every part on the performance is fixed to the corresponding midi channel (part 1 = channel 1, part 2 = channel 2, … , part16 = channel 16)
Hybrid: here every part under keyboard control is fixed to the main midi channel (that can be selected), all other parts are handeled like in multi mode
Single: all parts are assigned to the main channel (that can be selected in utilities)
Multi mode is the classical GM midi mode - you can play each an every channel by sending data on the corresponding channel.
This systems allows you to map the channels…
For sending data from the MoDX/Montage to another board you need to use the midi zone master functionality - here you can assign the midi channel for without limitations.
I made a couple of these tracks. But i don't know how to call them back up to work more on them. Can you help me?
The sequences are saved with the performance hopefully you remember to store the performance. To recall it just load the performance again.
Thank you so very much for replying. So many of these vids and the authors don't answer questions. I will try again. I thought i did save the performance. But i guess not. Sorry to be such a noobie. I'm an old school musician, i'm in over my head but loving it.@@edgaba
¿Se puede editar una sola nota? ¿Por ejemplo borrarla?
Unfortunately, the sequencer is an afterthought. There's no pattern view (seeing patterns aligned in a timeline), no pattern editing etc...
Thanks for this. Our styles aren't the same but damn has this board made me feel stupid.
My issue is that there is no punch in/ out in pattern mode. If you make a mistake there is no easy fixes.😞
While I’m pattern mode next to the time signature you have a dukes called position this is where you can punch in from any measure in the pattern. Also while in pattern mode and the pattern is playing there is an erase function where you can erase by note any mistakes. I hope this helps. 😎🎶
@@edgaba The entire track (part) gets deleted unless you put it in overdub mode.
@@BRJHA80 yes that how most sequencers work :-)
@@edgaba My previous keyboard, the Korg M3 wasnt like that. For example, I'm recording a track, I make a mistake on the 8 measure, I restart on the 8th measure and continue recording, and ONLY the mistake in the 8th measure gets deleted. I guess all workstation keyboards are not the same when it comes to sequencing.🤷♂
@@BRJHA80 it does have a way to locate to any measure and also just overwrite that or overdub so it should operate the same way.
They made it very complicated. I've had many Yamaha sequencers and this one is way too hard.
I don’t know what does are but this may help help.ableton.com/hc/en-us/articles/211427589-Supported-Audio-File-Formats
That part about convert to audio … not really intuitive … it’s strange, these days we have better, faster electronic devices , smaller components … I feel like a time traveler that goes 15 years back.
i'd never buy anything that confusing. it would take my time away from making music.
Fl studio is easier
That’s nice …
Stopped watching when you decided to voice your opinion on use of Arpeggiator. I don't need to be lectured on how you think "real" musicians shouldn't be using it.
Weird I don’t remember saying anything about the arp. I don’t ever use it really. I didn’t mean to offend anyone and I also didn’t mean to come across like lecturing, just making a video that may help someone that is as confused with this sequencer as I am haha
@edgaba, listen to yourself at 1:59
I stand corrected.
I understand the author says he doesn’t deal with aprs in case of some one wants to use arp better use PSR series. This video is very good he does a great job
Sensitive much?
You can capture the audio but you need a usb drive.
Yes it does record a stereo audio file to USB but it does not record audio as part of a sequence in different tracks.
