  • Flat earthers think it's so easy to pull out mathematical evidence of the sun's distance to the earth. So easy, in fact, that they believe equilateral triangles not only prove a nearby sun, but also disprove the globe earth. Professor Stick shall tackle this topic.

      Naw, just have them do a reality show where Flat Earthers are rounded up and taken into orbit in such a way that they can see the entire journey through windows from ground to orbit and back to show them the truth and then dropped off at a film studio somewhere to be interviewed about their experience. TAH DAH! No more Flat Earthers! They either grow a brain and abandon their stupidity or they commit suicide because they were proven wrong and can't let go of their stupidity.

      A better idea would be to send a group of flattards on different expeditions that prove the earth is round, then watch them scramble to rationalize how they are being deceived. They could be sent to the south pole, or on a trip around Antarctica, or even into space on a Soyuz spacecraft.

      Daniel Pitts You are right, but she would still get the wrong distance with that observations. I run HER numbres.
      She claims that the observers are 6654km appart. With an earth radius of 6371km, they form a triangle with a 59.886° angle at earth center. The chord would be 6360km. Since the observer is looking up 60° the angle to the earth radius is 90+60. Since the inner angles of a diamond add up to 360°, the angle made up from observer a - sun - observer b is 0.16°
      The sun, observer a and the middle of the chord form a right triangle. The angle at the sun is 0.16/2=0.08°.
      Going by those numbres the distance between the observer and the sun (Hypothenuse) would be 4.555 Million km.

    Ironically, we can use geometry to prove the Earth is spherical:
    1. Start at one of the poles, and travel in a straight line to the equator.
    2. Make a right angle turn and continue to travel in a straight line for a few thousand miles.
    3. Make another right angle turn and continue straight. If you started at the north pole, travel north, if you started at the south pole, then travel south.
    4. You will eventually return to the point of origin.
    On a flat Earth, this would be impossible, as according to Euclid, two parallel lines will never meet, and the sum of the angles of a triangle can never be greater than 180 degrees. Take note that these rules only apply to geometry on a 2d plane. The fact that both these rules have been violated proves that we do not live on a flat Earth, but rather an Earth that can only be described using Non-Euclidean geometry. (i.e. a globe.)

      Brilliant, but impractical. There's an even easier way to do it using this idea of geodesic curvature. There is a device called a Foucault pendulum that is essentially a big ball at the end of a very long string. Think a 60 pound sphere hanging on a 200 foot wire. This thing is a pendulum, so it undergoes periodic motion. For a small angle of oscillation, it's sinusoidal. But now, realize that this thing is moving on a line of latitude as the earth rotates. That's parallel transport along a curved surface. So, it will undergo precession if the earth is curved. You can calculate exactly how much precession it undergoes per day if the earth were a sphere. The period of precession is a day divided by the sine of your latitude angle. Experimentally verifying this formula at different places on the earth not only proves the earth is a sphere, but it also proves that it's rotating.

      if you don't trust the idea of science itself, then any opinions that you have based on a belief that ignores the idea of science should be COMPLETELY IGNORED. They do not need debunking, they simply have nothing to stand on.
      Science is defined as basically the systematic discovery of everything around us. Using observation, experiments, logic, and the power of multiple people making sure a theory you find cannot be refuted is what allows us to determine if something is true. Throwing away this process for conviency makes you completely untrustable as a person and any claims you make are worthless.
      Modern science is the reason we have advanced so much in the 20th and 21rst centuries. Not people's stupid gods.

    • @chasebrower7816
      @chasebrower7816 6 років тому +18

      Science is literally the idea of finding truth. You might reject mainstream science for being wrong, but science is literally the process by which we learn about everything around us.
      There's a very big difference between MAINSTREAM SCIENCE and the DEFINITION OF SCIENCE ITSELF. The former is generally believed easier due to it's credibility throughout time, the latter is literally just the process of finding things which are true.
      The way I see it, science is the foundation for what anyone would use to find any truth in the world.
      Moving on to mainstream science, which i assume is what you were talking about. We developed rocketry, robotics, and advanced computing and used this to develop rockets designed to go to space. We sent rockets to space. We observed the Earth and the moon in orbit. Nowadays, we have thousands and thousands of satellites in space which are necessary for long distance communication.
      Your senses are generally reliable, but in some things they just aren't enough. When's the last time you saw an atom with your naked eye? We can observe these through electron microscopes, but light operates on a wavelength that is so large you literally could not see an atom even if you could zoom in on it enough. Another example being the curvature of the Earth, you could use your own senses to see it, but you would have to be on a rocket going into space. Why don't you attempt to become an astronaut and see it yourself?
      There IS curvature. It's just so miniscule you can't see it without going very high in orbit. A plane (on the scale with the size of the Earth) is still just above the ground. If you were to create a scale model of the earth 791 pixels wide on your screen, the atmosphere would literally be 1 pixel wide on your screen. The plane is only a portion of the way up in this atmosphere. You have to be very high above the earth to see curvature with the naked eye.
      I am not in a cult, rather I am atheist. I would be left wing, but disagree with their current regressing philosophies, and mostly align with republican ideas, although i wouldn't align with the ideology. I originally supported Trump (although he has been more hypocritical and radical lately). Authority in all phases of life? That's exactly what I'm against. That's why I left the left-wing area, it started to regress to intolerance and trying to force people to act a certain way towards certain "special" groups.
      Anarchy is a complete failure in my eyes, we would literally never achieve anything, the sun would eventually engulf the earth and we'd all die, as animals with nothing ever achieved. Authority is necessary to a certain extent. And scare the hell out of me? No, you calling yourself an anarchist over the internet does not scare me, mostly because it is not a position of any threat to anything. You probably just don't like taxes. And it isn't called being a real man. Being a real man is supporting and attempting to change society in a way that can help other people around you. Not trying to be selfish and avoid any responsibility to others that a government implies. If you don't like how your taxes are spent, or how much you are taxed, you vote, protest, and try to change that. Trying to throw away society in it's entirety is not a solution to the problem.

    • @Peter_Scheen
      @Peter_Scheen 6 років тому +4

      Jon, you cannot be serious. Do you even know what the scientific method is?
      It also includes experiments, also experiments of which you do not like the results. Often with instruments.
      So, when on a sunny day you go and observe a ship in the distance disappear behind the horizon you measure all!!
      Not only the hight but also the parts that are disapearing first.
      And no, flattards do there "research" from the comfort from their home with google.
      They can easily go to the southpole for them selves and see.
      One of the simplest experiments from your armchair.
      Go figure out how long a transatlantic flight takes on the northern hemisphere and southern hemisphere.
      Things like that are simply not done by flattards.
      Proof me wrong by showing your flight data on transatlantic flights.

    I have an idea:
    We shall settle the flat earth debate once and for all.
    Let's fund a rocket and send them to to orbit. If we make them look out the window, they'll say it's fake. If they do that, we'll let them go on a spacewalk. They'll say that there are projections on the helmet. If so, we tell them to take their helmets off and GTFO.

This way the person asking the question knows what the flat earthers are actually arguing and how it is still flawed.

      The east-going shadow of a heliocentrism solar eclipse cannot be modelled to scale.
      This brave guy, for whom I have a lot of respect, did achieve an eastward shadow, but unfortunately he was forgetting that the sun distance is the crucial factor in shadow speed.
      (Remember when you must have made faster shadows on the wall with a torch held closer to your hand ?)
      Exactly the same principle is going on here.
      So keen that you get the official explanation to the shadow direction issue is google, that you need only type, "shadow east" , let alone "why shadow east" and like a jumpy person it blurts out the mainstream answer!
      I'm sure I used to see more hits in the past. So watch that space, because I think it's possible the globe based establishment may be on the hop and right now having to come up with a new answer.
      Something like, that the eclipse shadow direction is no longer about heliocentricity's moon speed but tricks of the light, refraction etc.
      (The recent change of ideas, that the moon is supposedly in earth's exosphere, may just be leading to a remodeling of how the atmosphere works so they can teach a new explanation for why the shadow can go east.)
      If they do it won't fit. As far as I recall, the eclipse scale model (video above) has a reduction in the sun distance (when scale is taken into account), of about 30 hundred percent.
      I'm sorry, but there really is something, central, that doesn't work in globe theory.
      Orphan Red featured from 4:39 is correct to see the link between angles of sun elevation above us (whatever they be), the viewing platform's shape (flat or curvature) and the distance to the sun btw.
      This website
      phys.org/news/2015-01-distance-sun.html
      makes believe that two of the ancient Greeks lived and produced their astronomy work in the opposite order!!,
      thus helping to obscure that mankind would have had no essential first known length in the triangle moon-earth-sun, needed for any trigonometry for globe.
      Best wishes.

Like she said, the angles for an equilateral triangle are always 60 degrees - but that is on a flat surface. On a round surface the angles for an equilateral triangle are larger than 60 degrees and you can measure and prove that for yourself RELATIVELY easily.

      The diagram at 9:26, if drawn correctly, shows that the 60Deg lines from each location converge very gradually over an extremely long distance (her diagram suggests they diverge, which is incorrect), which when extrapolated to their point convergence no doubt reaches approx 149 million km. Though tere are considerable errors in the points on the earth the readings would be taken as they would be a different elevations and they are at different latitudes, so that introduces a lot of error when taking the earth-sun distance into account. I just don't have a big enough piece of paper to draw the lines out to convergence. I guess that's what flat earther's do, they draw diagrams that totally misrepresent reality in order to support their fantasy.

    Circumference of Earth at Equator: ~24,898.344 miles
    Radius of the Earth at Equator: ~3,962.694mi (Circumference÷2π)
    She chose two points with different latitudes, that aren't on the equator, and one is no more specific than a country more than 400 miles wide! Instead, let's pick two places very near the same longitude, but are both exactly at the equator. The equator touches Brazil at ~(0°, 49.19°W) and Gabon at ~(0°, 10.82°E). They're approximations, because she listed the altitude of the sun at 60°--these two locations, at exactly 13:24 UTC, are exactly 60.00°--at least, within a hundredth of 60.00°.
    www.suncalc.org/#/0,-49.19,10/2015.03.21/10:24/1/0
    www.suncalc.org/#/0,10.82,9/2015.03.21/14:24/1/0
    Distance between these two coordinates: |-49.19° -10.82°| = 60.01°
    Distance in miles on surface: 4,150.416 mi (24,898.344mi ×60.01° ÷360°)
    Distance of line straight through planet: 3,963.293mi (2 ×3,962.694mi ×sin(60.01° ÷2))
    Since our angles are both nearly 60°, it makes sense the straight-line and radius would be almost the same.
    So, 60.01° -60.00° at each point (arc÷surface distance - angle of sun) gives us an acute angle, at the sun, the double of 0.01°
    A right triangle, whose 90° angle sits at the middle of our straight-line distance (3,963.293mi ÷2 = 1,981.646mi), and whose distant angle (the Sun) is 0.01°, so 180° -90° -0.01° = 89.99°. That's damn near a right angle. If the two points could "see" each other through the planet (which they wouldn't need to do if the Earth was flat, they could see each other), this is the angle measured from one point between the Sun and the other point.
    Cosine is adjacent side divided by hypotenuse, or COS(θ) = adj ÷hyp, so hyp ×COS(θ) = adj, so hyp = adj ÷COS(θ). Adjacent side is 1,981.646mi, and COS(89.9°) = 0.001745. 1981.646mi ÷0.001745 would give us the distance from one coordinate to the sun. And that comes out to, well, 1,135,400 miles.
    But that's not the distance science says! That's correct, because our angles are rounded to the nearest hundredth. We can't tick up one more hundredth of a degree, or we're at 90°, which would give parallel lines and set the sun an infinite distance away. Do we need to tick up thousandths of degrees? Millionths? _Billionths?_ Let's find out:
    How much more precise, and how much more of an angle, would be required to make the correct distance? And is it less than a hundredth of a degree? Let's run the numbers the other way: COS(θ) = 1,981.646mi ÷92,957,130.359mi, so θ = ARCCOS(1,981.646mi ÷92,957,130.359mi) = 89.9987785773°. From 90°, that's a distance of 0.0012214227°. One THOUSANDTH of a degree less.
    Our arc distance between our two coordinates was 4,150.416mi, or 60.01°. What arc distance would we need to match the angle above? (4,150.416mi ÷60.01°) × 60.0012214227° , which comes out to 4,149.809mi. Or, 0.6071mi (3205.724 feet) further apart than the two points picked. So I think it's safe to say that we've more than surpassed the limits of the simple tools we have access to. But this should serve to prove that your triangle doesn't prove the earth is flat, or round, or bigger or smaller than it's been calculated to be.
    A variance that small is almost impossible to measure, and again, considering one point looks through a morning sun (lower heat and humidity, lower pressure), and the other through an afternoon sun (higher heat and humidity, higher pressure), the differing angles of diffraction of the atmosphere between the two would more than account for such a tiny variance. She only thinks she used math because she either didn't realize how many more steps would be necessary, didn't calculate (find) accurate numbers, or both.

      @youreconfused you are mixing things and simplifying them.
      Mixing because professors are not the government, they are public employees yes, but also they are ex-students with passion for their discipline, and those professors make the departments for each university. So you can't just assume professors will censor information on purpose to students in pos of government interests.
      Simplifying because plenty of reasons, 1) every country has a different government; 2) not every science department is ran by government, there's independent ones too, so knowledge gained will most likely get public one way or another; 3) the assumption you did at the end is a false dicotomy, were you claim if something is false it instantly proves the other; 4) you're implying a conspiracy bigger than what logic dictates is possible. For it to be viable government should only allow people with low ethic parameters in their lines, for which they should have really strange job interviews, if that were the case common public would notice, voice would spread eventually that there's something very fishy about those interviews, because they'd only need to admit people willing to hide information and allow their superiors to apply their mass control unpunishedly and unnoticed.
      (Sorry not the best english, not the worse, hope it was clear enough)

      Hi so the air is spinning with the earth.....outer space is not spinning at all....so from the earth to outer space there is a gradual lessening of air, so, there should be a gradual lessening of the spinning of the atmosphere right? so does this mean that the higher a plane goes the slower it will fly?....

    • @flatoutdaft3389
      @flatoutdaft3389 7 років тому +14

      The vacuum of space is the absence of atmosphere; does it really make sense to say that the vacuum is either moving or not moving? In the absence of factors like turbulence or bombardment from solar particles every molecule of atmosphere would, I think, be like a tiny geostationary satellite no matter how far out.
      I hope this makes sense. My main point is that a vacuum is not a stationary medium that is going to cause any drag on the atmosphere.

    • @des2610
      @des2610 7 років тому

      Correct. it wont cause a drag on the atmosphere because there is nothing there. What I saying is that the drag of the earth spinning on the lower levels of atmosphere would not be there in the higher levels so without this drag would the air molecules in the outer layers try to stop rotating with the earth as all matter without energy applied to it would eventually come to rest? thanks for your reply

    • @flatoutdaft3389
      @flatoutdaft3389 7 років тому +3

      DE S I think one has to consider that, as far as we know, a planet's atmosphere is formed with the planet, and so it has always been turning with the planet. But even if that were not the case, given enough time the drag of the lower atmosphere, it seems to me, should bring the upper atmosphere along with it, so it's all going at the same rate. A bit like stirring a mug of liquid except that in that case you have the resistance of the mug. You have to bear in mind also that the atmospheric layer is *very* thin in comparison with the earth's size.
      "All matter without energy applied will eventually come to rest." This actually isn't the case. Only matter that is experiencing a resistance will eventually come to rest

    • @o0killenjoke0o

    Someone should explain to her that triangle prove the Earth is spherical (roughly). If you start at the North Pole, and go directly south to the equator, then turn 90 degrees east, and travel one quarter of the Earth's circumference (90 degrees of longitude) then turn north 90 degrees you end up back at the pole, arriving at a 90 degree angle to your starting course. You form an equilateral triangle with angles adding up to 270 degrees rather then the 180 degrees in flat triangles. On the flattard Earth, the trip from west to east would be LONGER than the other two legs, but it isn't. This is why navigators use spherical geometry for anything other than short trips.

    I don't think Flearthers even consider Comets, Asteroids or NEOs in their models... I want to hear them try to explain this. There are a plethora of other Astronomical bodies which defy Flat-Earth logic.
    Wait, what am I saying... Models and Logic?!?!
    Their model is just a typical 2D Atlas, and even then they add extra features, such as some odd Ice boundary which "nobody has ever seen", yet they've mapped beyond that boundary, which features more ice which has a sea between the two of these so-called boundaries. WTF!
    If nobody has ever seen beyond this apparent boundary, then how do they know that there is another?
    Logic - Oh yeah, that's me being nice *cringing as I type*. Just replace 'Logic' with 'stupidity'.

    As a student who is currently in geometry, she set up her triangle wrong by claiming that the sun was 93 million miles from each person on the flat earth not in the middle where it would make a straight line from the sun to the earth making the sun actually farther away from the people than what she claimed

    • @littlebackpack1
      @littlebackpack1 5 років тому

      By the way, if you were wondering how far it would be it would (going off the assumption that the people were 1000 miles apart) 93,000,000.00134409 miles from sun to person

      According to her, there is only one kind of triangle - the equilateral triangle and the distance of the sun depends on the distance between two people!!!
      If two people stand 5m apart then the sun should be at a distance of 5m from both of them!
      WHY DOES SHE EVEN TRY TO EXPLAIN THAT SHE DOESN'T UNDERSTAND OR HAS NO KNOWLEDGE OF ?
