There is a LOT more in that sauce than just beer and tomato, believe me! :))) The sauce is the most important "ingredient" of francesinha, that's what makes it different from one place to another and most restaurants keep their secret well kept ;) Glad you enjoyed it :)
Here's a recipe you can do at home :) For the francesinha sauce: - 1 large onion, chopped - 2 garlic cloves, chopped - 1 bay leaf - 2 table spoons of butter - 2 minced sausages (or a piece of bacon, for flavour) - 1/2 liter of beer - 1/2 liter of tomato pulp - piri-piri (pepper sauce) - 1/2 glass of white wine - 1/4 cup whiskey - 1/4 cup of port wine - 2 tablespoons ketchup - 2 tablespoons mustard - 1 tablespoon of worcestershire sauce - 2 broths of chicken or meat It´s important to boil these ingredients for at least 15/20 minutes. Liquefy. Dissolve 1 tablespoon of cornstarch with 1/2 liter of milk, add it and just let it boil for 1 or 2 minutes, before use. (If it's too much sauce you can freeze portions) Grill the slices of bread so that it won't be immediatly soaked when you pour the sauce. Use the meats you have or prefer: - beef, chicken or turkey steak, grilled - fresh sausage, grilled (some kind of portuguese chorizo would be a must...linguiça, chourição, etc) - ham - lots of cheese Serve with french fries and fried egg and eat all of it very hot. Please watch this video to follow the steps: ua-cam.com/video/_7Jxk1O43EU/v-deo.html Enjoy and keep coming to Porto to have "the real one"! There are many good different places to eat it. I recommend: O Afonso Rua da Torrinha 219, Porto, Portugal +351 22 200 0395 (and so does Anthony Bourdain) :))
Haha. True story. That sauce has an impressive amount of ingredients. I know who also boils entire pig feet and just removes the bones from the pan before liquifying it!
Fantastic video guys! I’m heading to Portugal soon. Doing all my planning now and your review is actually very helpful 💖 thank you for including proper address 😘
Thanks for the video! We went to Bufete Fase yesterday and it was delicious, and the people there were very friendly. First time in Portugal from the US.

This video made me hungry 🤣 happy to see you back on the road again after the Holiday break. Hoping to see more travel videos in the future ❤ happy travels!
I love Porto, one of my friends lives there and I visit at least once a year. A Francesinha and a beer hits the spot, although it's best eaten when you're very hungry. I want one now, I doubt we have them in the UK :-)
You might find some in Vauxhall, Lambeth or Stockwell in London, where there's a huge portuguese community. Or you can try Porto Cafe Restaurant - FC Porto of London where they have a Francesinha Festival every once in a while.
I live in Porto and saying that a certain restaurante " is the best place to have Francesinha" is impossible. Pretty much every restaurant has it and it varies from place to place. One thing is sure: you overpaid. Even the restaurant at my building has an awesome one (I know because I have had them frequently since I was a kid as I live in the city) and it costs about 6€. They even have a lunch menu which also includes drink for 5,90€. Oh, and if you think that is massive, check them at Verso em Pedra! I had 3 of them last time I was at the restaurant in my building and they were bigger than the one you had :P Anyway, thanks for sharing the goodies of my town! You're always very welcome!
Im portuguese. Im from the south but I live in England. Ive been to Porto so many time and hinestly that Francesinha is the pure representation of it. Well done
I didn't care for that sandwich when I was there and I went to a few places including the place they went to. I would recommend going a little further up towards the coast to get some great seafood, there is a bus you can take across from the São Bento train station that takes you to where all the restaurants that get the freshest seafood are! A local actually told me about it.
Honestly, this looks to be one of my favorite dishes you've ever featured on your channel and I've been watching you for years. The letter "s" at the end of words in Portuguese is pronounced "sh" so this beer, and the city it's named after, is pronounced SAH-gresh. Source: the people in the city of Sagres. I have to tell you a story about the affordability of staying in Portugal. I spent one night in a hotel in downtown Lisbon. I went to the lounge in the hotel to have some beer. One would think that beer would be at its most expensive in a hotel in a large capital city in a "convenience location" such as a bar or lounge. The Sagres beer was less than 2 Euros.
Thank you very much! Appreciate the tips with pronunciation. Wow, that is an awesome story. Portugal is definitely one of the best value countries you can visit in Europe :)
Thank you Valter. While I was in Portugal I heard it pronounced with "sh", a slight "j" as you say and also "zh" as in the "s" sound in the word "measure".
Bufete Fase is great but it's not the searched restaurant of them all... Yuko Tavern or Café Santiago have a lot more people. I mean, Yuko on weekends has available tables only at 11pm... When dinner service starts at 7pm.
My favourite is in the stone oven 👌🏻 the cheese get even better, I just eat it with 1 sausage type The number 1 beer in Portugal is super bock, francesinha is great also with sangria U always can ask for more sauce, but normally they bring a little more in the middle of the meal... Thanks for the video 😊 And u guys are always welcome ✌🏻
In Porto people don't usually drink Sagres, they mostly drink Super Bock, the reason being because the football club of Porto is sponsored by Super Bock and lisbon's club Benfica is sponsored by Sagres. Porto citizens will tell you it's actually because they prefer Super Bock's taste in order to avoid that argument, but for most of the cases the football thing is true, trust me! And also, I'm pretty sure the most known place to eat a francesinha in Porto is called Santiago, but I might be wrong on this one! Francesinha changes from restaurant to restaurant because the sauce always has a secret recipe and variations that makes it unique! If I were to tell you the difference between Sagres and Super Bock, I would say Super Bock has a slightly lighter taste to it. Great video, always enjoy portugal!
Well you can try it everywhere in Portugal since both brands are pretty popular all around the country! But Porto in specific prefers Super Bock! You drank Sagres in that restaurant because it probably had a contract with Sagres and not Super Bock, no other special reason! And you're welcome, take care!
Sagres is made in the south, and Super Bock in the North. Nowadays both are found in all country, But the dominance of each brand is still a result of geographical location. Nothing to do with football or sponsering. In the North people are used to Super Bock and in the South to Sagres, and that's the only reason you see more one than another.
In the south people are used to both, not one of them in particular!

Actually it has nothing to do with football. The Super Bock beer is brewed in Porto, the Sagres is brewed in Lisbon. And that's about it. Both brands fight for market leadership, so they try to oust one another in almost every place. Sagres might have offered a better deal to Bufete Fase, which really lives on its francesinha and doesn't really have to settle for Super Bock to get its customers.
Great channel! I'm headed to Lisbon this summer, but have to ask what is the name of that bookstore or library you filmed at the very beginning of this video? Thanks!
Guys Portuguese food is the best balanced food in the world. And if your in the north in this case Porto drink Super Bock Beer instead of Sagres, Sagres its a southern beer. Super Bock Beer its all made in Porto. Cheers and keep it up!
Beer in portugal is divided for north and south, in the north it is more common to see Super Bock, in the south, Sagres. About the francesinha, its taste is totally different from restaurant to restaurant. The thing i have realized after living in porto for the 20 years of my life is that the best francesinhas are in restaurants out of the center, you should ask locals where to find the better. PS: in the north very few restaurants serve sagres as it is considered "piss" by the Northerns, specially by students (i.e. Me). Thank you for visiting portugal and come again, maybe check out douro next.
I might be a little late here but if you ever come back, you can request for more sauce and fries and most places give it to you for free. At least most places I ever went to, and I am local so I pretty much ate at every single good one, they do that. Glad you enjoyed our city ! Great video !
Hey guys we love your videos and are on the verge on a big trip to Europe from Australia. Wondered if you would mind helping us with a technical question re your vlogs! Notice you use Panasonic camera and Rode Videomicro. We have Panasonic Z85 and Rode Videomic Pro. Your sound (from both of you)is always great. Do you have the Microphone on the camera hotshoe or on a tripod. These microphones are quite directional and we’re looking for a way that both my voice behind the camera and Meredith’s in front are equally audible & clear. We’ve tried a splitter with a lapel mike but that kills the sound. SORRY about the long question but would be very appreciative of any thoughts you have. KEEP TRAVELLING & EATING! Gerard
Thank you! That is really good question. To be honest we just mount it on the camera hotshoe and whoever is filming tries to hover close to the microphone.
Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos . Thanks Samuel and Audrey. I really appreciate you taking the time to reply and sharing your expertise. Gerard. PS it’s really nice to see you guys abroad with Sam’s folks too!
Im from portugal and im so glad you guys enjoy the food. Except for the beer, because most of us prefer Super Bock instead of Sagres. Have fun in portugal. Great country for foreigners with a lot to show.
Super bock its the portuguese best beer and its from porto sagres its from lisbon, try it there s a big diference. Bom apetite and thank you for the video. Beijos

Well... I dont know that place and Ive ate in many different places in Porto, that isnt even on the most common places known for having good Francesinha, but it is always good, theres variations on sauce and spiciness and the quality of the meats, the fries might be frozen on cheaper places but its always tasty and I recommend you try different spots if you liked it.
Hey guys. Great video :) Next time you order a Francesinha ask for more sauce on the side. You can ask for it :) And once you´re in Porto ask for the Porto´s local beer Super Bock. Enjoy
Stunning meal ! On a side note it is so good to see Audrey ditched the "blue sneakers from hell " for awhile, hardly recognize her in the chic leather boots!
Hi guys! if you are still there in Porto I would recommend a few more places you could try like: Gazela cachorrinhos, sandes guedes, A badalhoca, Conga, lareira and taberna de santo antonio!
Have the best landscapes in the world and also the best steak! Called "Regional Steak" you can find on the island of São Miguel in the Azores Archipelago !!
There's 2 beers that are very famous in Portugal, Super Bock and Sagres, personally I prefer Super Bock. And almost everyone in Portugal that I know think Super Bock is better as well, it depends what region you are.
you should go where they use a wood oven to do them :) you get a better steak inside and better fries!(those are frozen) not bad this one tho not bad! probaly bought sauce as well! :(
Is strange for us Portuguese, hear you call it a sandwich. For us is real a meal (not to eat every day, unless you want to die soon. :):D. Speaking of the beer, Super Bock is better. You can always ask for more sauce, it’s free. :) ah, and pour it over the Francesinha. I like to put the French fries in the sauce “around” the Francesinha.
In some places, you can even ask for more sauce and they will give some of it for free. Especially if you put some fries into the plate so they can see you have no more sauce left xD
Biggest one I ate as in Mozambique. If you managed to eat the whole thing it was free :D I am proud to say got it free one. It was more or less 3 times that one with 2 eggs on top :D
@@samuelandaudrey It was disastrous because I started feeling sick afterwards and tougth it was Malaria (I even had a small fever) so I took the Malaria pills which have a very unpleasant side effect which lead me to the hotel and University (where I teached) bathroom on an hourly basis for about a week. :D But I ate the damn thing so kudos to me ... eheheh
Being the biggest doesn't mean they are the best of course :) Fase still have the best sauce but I think they are kinda small. The biggest might be in Verso em Pedra in the Ribeira area, actually they are known for having a king size francesinha that if you can eat the whole thing you don't have to pay for it and still you get a prize but that is almost impossible, I can eat 2 to 3 francesinhas but I could never finish that king size one, oh yeah, I've seen it!
as a local, i should give you some advice for the next time xD, never, but never cut a francesinha in half and start always from the corner. realoly good video btw ;)
There is a LOT more in that sauce than just beer and tomato, believe me! :))) The sauce is the most important "ingredient" of francesinha, that's what makes it different from one place to another and most restaurants keep their secret well kept ;) Glad you enjoyed it :)

For the francesinha sauce:
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 2 garlic cloves, chopped
- 1 bay leaf
- 2 table spoons of butter
- 2 minced sausages (or a piece of bacon, for flavour)

- 1/4 cup whiskey
- 1/4 cup of port wine
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 2 tablespoons mustard
- 1 tablespoon of worcestershire sauce

It´s important to boil these ingredients for at least 15/20 minutes. Liquefy.
Dissolve 1 tablespoon of cornstarch with 1/2 liter of milk, add it and just let it boil for 1 or 2 minutes, before use.

Thank you! We'll have Super Bock next time for sure :)
Super bock its the portuguese best beer and its from porto sagres its from lisbon, try it there s a big diference. Bom apetite and thank you for the video. Beijos
Thank you very much! We will have Super Bock next time :)
Nice videography guys
Thank you very much!
I really like francesinha with starry egg on top

@@samuelandaudrey thanks 👍
Normally each restaurants has it's own secret sauce, but the base of the sauce is what you said
THanks for letting us know.
I am just wondering, can taste beer in the beer sauce? I guess it's a dumb question :)
Not a dumb question. It is not overwhelming but hints for sure.
Actually a lot of Portuguese drink fresh green wine with francesinha. A good alvarinho is always a good choice!
Very interesting to hear Armando!
Hey guys. Great video :) Next time you order a Francesinha ask for more sauce on the side. You can ask for it :) And once you´re in Porto ask for the Porto´s local beer Super Bock. Enjoy
Thank you! Great tips and we'll try a Super Bock next time.
Looks so incredibly good! :)
Super yummy I've gotta say.
That was a great video, but you guys should try the regaleira restaurant ou the capa negra restaurant if you want a really good and big francesinha!
Thank you! Really appreciate the suggestion and hope we can try it next time.
You guys remind me of the Hodge Twins, when you do your food blogs, fighting over who gets to eat, and who has to film.
Hahahaha...thanks! Yeah, it is a bit of a routine we have but honestly I usually let Audrey go 1st.
Stunning meal ! On a side note it is so good to see Audrey ditched the "blue sneakers from hell " for awhile, hardly recognize her in the chic leather boots!
Thank you! Ah, a big upgrade.
My sister bought a Super Bock t-shirt when she visited Lisbon lmao...think she tried this as well.
That is so cool to hear!
francesinhas are perfect all year round no lie
I agree!
It s so good, i don t want to stop!!!
The best Portuguese beer is Super Bock. I'm pretty sure the beer they serve in Bufete Fase is Super Bock, despite the name on the glasses.
Thanks for sharing Rui!
@@samuelandaudrey Next time you're in Porto, let me know - I'll show you guys around some hidden gems in the city.
You must try the francesinha made in the firehoven, i dont now if i wrote it correctly but go to restaurante Lucanda its 10 times better
Thank you for sharing that!
Thats amazing !
Thanks!
Whats the resturant called please?
La francesinha es lo mejor del mundo!
Hi guys! if you are still there in Porto I would recommend a few more places you could try like: Gazela cachorrinhos, sandes guedes, A badalhoca, Conga, lareira and taberna de santo antonio!
Thank you very much for the recommendations!
THE SAUCE IS ON TOP! try it next time ! :D
Thank you for the tip!
If you like to travel and eat come to Açores(São Miguel) is one of the 9 islands of Portugal
Have the best landscapes in the world and also the best steak! Called "Regional Steak" you can find on the island of São Miguel in the Azores Archipelago !!
THank yoU! Would love to go there.
That s a cool sandwich 😋
Thanks! We really enjoyed trying it.
There's 2 beers that are very famous in Portugal, Super Bock and Sagres, personally I prefer Super Bock. And almost everyone in Portugal that I know think Super Bock is better as well, it depends what region you are.
Thanks for sharing that Matt!
Mmmmm, amazing!
Thanks!
Love francesinha ❤️ by the way best beer in Portugal is Super Bock 🍺
Thank you for your helpful video and letting us know the prices.
Thank you! We try to include the prices whenever we remember.
you should go where they use a wood oven to do them :) you get a better steak inside and better fries!(those are frozen) not bad this one tho not bad! probaly bought sauce as well! :(
Oh, that sounds really good!
most places will serve francesinha with a fried egg on top, it looks weird to me without the egg, its a classic look
Interesting to hear! Hoping to try it with the fried egg next time.
I prefer the version with the soft fried egg on top 😀
That sounds good!
Many places also serve Francesinha with fries. So it can be filling.
Thanks for the suggestion of Super Bock. Ah, it sure is a real meal.
viva portugal o melhor pais do mundo 3õ
Adoramos visitar Portugal sempre que podemos.
abraços de portugallllll
In some places, you can even ask for more sauce and they will give some of it for free. Especially if you put some fries into the plate so they can see you have no more sauce left xD
That is so cool to hear!
Good video I like you travel for food
Thank you very much! We do travel to eat more or less.
Biggest one I ate as in Mozambique. If you managed to eat the whole thing it was free :D I am proud to say got it free one. It was more or less 3 times that one with 2 eggs on top :D
WoW! That is amazing. Like seriously impressive. Were you okay afterwards and of course congrats!
:D But I ate the damn thing so kudos to me ... eheheh
I now want a massive cheese toastie smothered in heinz cream of tomato soup.
oh! you went to Fase! those are not the biggest but they have the best sauce! :O
Oh thanks! That is great to know. Where is the biggest one?
Being the biggest doesn't mean they are the best of course :) Fase still have the best sauce but I think they are kinda small. The biggest might be in Verso em Pedra in the Ribeira area, actually they are known for having a king size francesinha that if you can eat the whole thing you don't have to pay for it and still you get a prize but that is almost impossible, I can eat 2 to 3 francesinhas but I could never finish that king size one, oh yeah, I've seen it!
Woah! That sounds incredible. Would love to try Verso em Pedra next time.
The most popular beer in portugal is SuperBock and is one of the best beer's in the world.
Oh, we should have orderd that! Big mistake by us.
as a local, i should give you some advice for the next time xD, never, but never cut a francesinha in half and start always from the corner. realoly good video btw ;)
Thank you! Really appreciate that tip.
