  • Come join us on a quest to find the best pastel de nata in Lisbon, Portugal as we visit three different establishments eating Portuguese egg tarts all over the city. Pastéis de nata first originated from Santa Maria de Belém in the 18th century by Catholic monks at the Jerónimos Monastery where they are called Pastel de Belém (plural) or Pastéis de Belém (singular). Requiring egg-whites to starch clothes it was common to use the leftover yolks for baking which resulted in these tarts being created. Fortunately, we had the chance to visit Belem to sample the original ones along with two other places. They are typically served warm with icing sugar and cinnamon sprinkled on top. I should also note that the Portuguese egg tarts are popular in both Brazil and Macau as well. The following is a list of the 3 places where we tried them from:
    1) Fábrica de Pastéis de Belém
    Rua de Belem n0 84 a 92
    84 A 92 Lisbon 1300-085, Portugal
    +351 21 363 7423
    2) Confeitaria Nacional
Address: Praça da Figueira 18B, 1100-241 Lisboa, Portugal
    Phone: +351 21 342 4470
    3) Manteigaria
Address: Rua do Loreto 2, 1200-108 Lisboa, Portugal
    Phone: +351 21 347 1492
Out of the three we thought the best pastel de nata was at Manteigaria although we'd highly recommend all three spots as the quality was excellent throughout the range of establishments.

The Best Pastel de Nata in Lisbon, Portugal | Eating Portuguese Egg Tarts Video Transcript:
Hey guys, greetings from Lisbon and that means only one thing because we need to eat some local food from here and the local food that is really a specialty is the Pastel de nata which is the Portuguese egg tarts.
It was invented here in Lisbon and we are going to go 3 different places. No less than 3 different places to try it. Let's just get started. Let's start eating.
We got ourselves a little sweet treat. The line was long but they are super efficient in there. We went to Pastéis de Belém. It is like right next to the Jerónimos Monastery. The original. It is the original. They've been making these pastries since 1837. They look so good.
We bought four. Poof. And a fly just flew by.
My parents have the other two by the way. We easily could have had two each. We could have. And the price was a Euro and ten cents for each. They are quite small. I wish they were a little bit larger because this is like a two biter.
Oh my are they good. This is not our 1st time to try these. No, we've had these before. About two years ago on our last visit.
They gave us two little packs. This one has cinnamon this one is icing sugar. You just sprinkle a little bit on.
So good. It has got like a pudding texture doesn't it? I love it. The exterior is super flaky. And buttery and after walking around for hours
Our quest for Portuguese egg tarts continues. This is the 2nd spot we're trying. And this one is Confeitaria Nacional. This place is another like older establishment. It has been around for I think since the 19th century. We're going to have to look at the actual year. It has been a while. I will show you (1829) it was on the outside of the place.
What is different this time is that we have them in different sizes. So this would be the regular size. This is like the mini me size.
How is that? That is really good. It is really flaky and crispy and then you have that like pudding like eggy consistency but I think compared to the 1st place this one tastes a little bit sweeter.
Okay third shop. This one is called Manteigaria and we went in with the intention of only getting two tarts. We've walked out with a pack that holds six. Before we forget they were what a 1.10 Euro?
This may be the best one so far. You think so? This is warm. Fresh out of the oven. Ticks off that box. It is pudding like and creamy. It is really sweet.
You can just eat these all day. That is it from Lisbon and we will see you guys with more food and travel videos soon.
This is part of our Travel in Portugal video series showcasing Portuguese food, Portuguese culture and Portuguese cuisine.

    Just to clarify...
"Pastel de Nata" you can buy all around the country.
"Pastel de Belém" you can only buy in one place in Lisbon.
They are similar in shape but totaly diferent in flavour.
The recipe is very secret and till today nobody outside the "family" know's it.

I remember once in Lisbon, instead of "Pastel de Nata", I ordered a "Pastel de Natal" (Christmas tart), and the waitress was like "excuse me?". That was because I didn't know that Pastel de Belém was also known as Pastel de Nata, so when I saw it at a glance I misread it. Ps: I'm Brazilian, so it was funny because we were speaking the same language. Great video as always!

The ones on the buffet in the breakfast rooms at our hotels in Lisbon or Porto were just not all that good. Nowhere close to the flakiness and caramelization of a good pastel de nata.

Pastel de Nata and Pastel de Belem is not the same thing. They are different in taste and texture.
But both very good and in every corner in Lisbon you will find (Pastel de Nata)

You have to be generous with the cinnamon and the icing sugar when eating pastéis de nata (most often, they are written in plural; pastel is the singular). Also, they should be fresh out of the oven. Give it some backup with a cup of coffee. This is how it becomes soooo Portuguese! I love Portuguese cuisine!

Actually the shop that has won prizes for the best "pastel de nata" is close to the first place where you tried it. Maybe less than 500m walking, next to the pink-coloured presidential palace and the new National Coach museum

Pastel de Nata is not "egg tarts".Perhaps you could say it's a "milk cream cake/tart", but no...
It's Pastel de Nata and it's unique like much of the Wonderful Food in Portugal.
You wouldn't call a Pizza, has the italian Quiche Lorraine would you?
    Welcome to Portugal!

@@samuelandaudrey Try alentejo both the coast and interior, and the interior north, you'll see theres a lot of distinct food and sweets as well as the landscapes. The most known areas are the most populated, the others less knowned are more calm and relaxing. I live in the litoral of alentejo almost near the border with algarve, but its a relaxing place near almost everything.

    • @NunoGomes_
      @NunoGomes_ 6 років тому +1

Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos the better shops are on the outskkrts ir the city. In my opinion the best one I've tested is in Benfica, called Pastelinho de Benfica. A small coffee shop that hand makes them almost every day (they are closed in tuesdays so the best day to get them is on wednesday and monday. They have to make them really early ) but there is actually a citywide contest every year for this. I'll try to drop the link bellow.

    • @NunoGomes_
      @NunoGomes_ 6 років тому +1

There is no oficial page for the contest but seems this year the winner was a seafood restaurant called "Mercado do Peixe" at Ajuda ( above Belém ), 2nd place was "Fidalgo's" bakery at Moita and 3rd was "Pastelaria Batalha" at Venda do Pinheiro. Hope you return soon.

Do never get the ones in the gas stations along the highway. You will be disappointed. As you may expect they are mass produced. Do yourself a favor and get the authentic ones in a pastry shop or shop such as the ones shown in this video.
