- Is the 6.2l Detroit diesel the original American eco diesel? getting the base line for fuel economy in my 1987 suburban 2500 4x4 as we start building a rock lander jeep tow rig.
I don't know if "eco-diesel" is the right term. The 6.2L was actually built as a first article demo for the Army, not for fuel economy, but for fuel standardization. The Army was about to displace its M880's and M151's which ran on gasoline. The CUCV was chosen as an interim replacement until the M998 reached full scale production. The CUCV could be produced rapidly because it was 80% commercial off the shelf. As for MPG, my Army experience showed that the M1009 would average about 19 loaded. The 1008 would get about 16 loaded. The heavier variants such as contact trucks, ambulances, and shelter carriers came in around 12. The bottom line that mileage was better than the old Dodge 880's. The 6.2L Detriot Diesel engine was not built to be a racing machine, just a utility engine. We had some problems with the early 6.2's, but there was a lot of problems associated with the early Duramax engines as well, and those were costly.
I grew up with these and still own a couple. You do not get 20+mpg anymore in a 4x4 and no matter how many times you replace seals they leak but I love them. Plus it will run on whatever you dump in the tank.
Love these engines for what they are. I drive a 96 with the 6.5 and its becoming my favorite vehicle I've ever owned. Starting my channel around it at the moment lol.
I would try going to 3.73 gears, DEFINITELY the 5 speed, & a 16 inch electric engine cooling fan, and a 4 inch intake system. Then, before you try turning up the fuel pump, (if you still @ that point would like to,) give it another honest try, and see what you get, and then decide what/where/how you want to go/do from there. Best wishes for your turnout!
Definitely! I’m actually going to a bigger tire ( probably at least a 35). A 4 or 5 speed depending on what I can find, 5spd would be ideal and is definitely on my radar.
The military hummer headers and intake manifold, dual exhaust, high flow breather, efan, the fuel set right and a synthetic 0w20 and you can have like a 215hp 400tq engine.
People had these 20 years ago in regular cab half tons on 31s with minimal mods and got 32mpg. People chugged along on 38s getting 28mpg at 55 or 60 mph.
Id recomend swapping in a 700r4. With that, 35" tires and your current gearing will be right where you want to be. 65mph at 1800ish rpm
So I’ve got an 85 that had a 6.2 but was traded out for a 6.5 (out of a 89 donor) before I bought it my goals are very similar to yours please continue this series I would love to see where you go with it :-)
I’ve got 3-4 more videos I’m editing now. I just haven’t had a ton of time to. Including a road-trip from Washington state to central California.
Also, if you do decide to add a turbo, one off of a 6.5 should bolt on, with minimal adjustments. I ‘ve heard of it being done before, & was told that it was not a problem to do. (&, it was a reliable source that I heard it from.) Again, best to you!
Yeah, I’ve thought about picking up a turbo for it but first, I want to see just what I can get out of it without a turbo. I really like the super simple reliability of it with out.
I love owning one of the slowest trucks myself.
How slow is it? Can you go on the freeway and do 70 MPH?
Mine does, 4l80 though, not sure about the gears.
