    I had an 85 Chevy C20 6.2L. It was a really great truck. The Stanadyne DB2 injection pump started leaking into the block valley. Other than that it never gave me any issues.

    Thanks for making this Jeff! My grandpa had an '82 Scottsdale that was just riddled with fuel and glowplug issues and so many starters and batteries for some reason... Hearing that old oil burner spinning over without catching brought back fond memories with him. Looking forward to your and it's recovery!

    use WD40 as starter fluid i had lots of these trucks back in the day and it works .Note : you may here engine knock till it burns off but works well to clear out all air in the injectors is cleared .you will have to keep feeding WD 40 TILL it runs on its own ,spray it right down the air intake just like starter fluid

    I once had an 82 6.2 Chev. diesel 4 speed OD manual trans. One thing I found is it had and required 2 batt's to start. It didn't need the block heater any time to start, as long as the glow plugs were good. 2nd thing on the starter don't put a steel lock washer on the post for the batt's. the starter amp's will heat the washer up until it loses its temper and then no contact and no start. just leave any washers off and no problem. There is a "rubber washer in the pump that when it goes bat the pump won't deliver any fuel to the injectors, and no start. pump must be rebuilt to fix the problem.

      4spd od? probably the A833 Chrysler aka NP440 GM trans. I had one too it was mostly stripped of parts i used the fuel lines and eng. still have eng but they are real tough to find if one was looking again. between that and a short box those 2 are considered the holy grail in the 6.2 diesel world.

    Hello Jeff. I'm Tony. Hope your doing better each day. Stopped by to tell you this 82 Chevy truck your getting to know well. and the 6.2 diesel is a first year out. A real diesel engine . not the half & half olds engine. People say you should never buy a unproven truck the first year out. So I did just that in 1982. I did have some hick cups with it. but all come good over the years i had it. I learn to get my fuel in the winter at truck stops because of the high turn over of fuel was up to date with the weather. I live in Northern Illinois. And one time a vacuum hose come loose from a E G R actuator that made a lot of black smoke out the tail pipe when adding power. But It did the jobs I needed it for. every time. even at -4 in the Penn turn pike pulling a one car trailer loaded and a full 8 foot bed full of car parts. coming back from Boston . the truck was slowing down By the time I got to the next Pilot truck stop my foot was putting the gas peddle to the floor. On my rig there are two fuel filters. one like the one you where bleading and the other one under the air cleaner on the back side of the manifold . I changed both . and went on my way. I try to tell you but you dident get the msg .
    Take care and you and yours stay safe. TZ

    I JEFF at one time I built a military 1 1/4 ton Chevy 86 with the same 6.2 diesel. I put a Intake manifold from a military Hummer...there's a difference, I did away with the timing chain and ran gear drive set up, I also put the Banks sidewinder turbo set up and Marine injectors. I also put a intercooler from a wreck 6.6 Duramax truck. That 6.2 diesel ran with the stock 5.9 Cummins pretty well.

    My dear friend. When you jump a starter like that it is best to connect the hot cable first then the ground. That way when you make sparks like the fourth of July you are not blowing chunks of precious copper threads all over the place. Instead you are blowing chunks of expendable aluminum all over the place.
    You are very welcome.

    I worked in Prudhoe Bay in the early 80s and we had some of these Chevy Diesels. We would idle a lot in the winter because of real cold weather . After they are 2; years old with the engine idling if you removed the oil filler cap the exhaust would quit coming out the tail pipe and come out the oil filter.

  • @victorrobison5069
    @victorrobison5069 Рік тому

    I maintained a fleet of chevy p/u for a tree service. They were all 6.5 turbo diesel, and the hardest thing to teach drivers was the starting procedure. When the engine started, especially in cold weather, drivers would rev the engine and the injection pump would out-pull the lift pump. Then the engine stalled and you had to bleed the filter before it would start again. If you turned the key on and waited for the glow plug light, turn it off and back on again, and then cranked it with your foot off the throttle after the 2nd glow plug cycle, it would start and idle. None of these trucks are made worse by installing a better lift pump.

    Hey Jeff, good to see you back. People look at 6.2 starting problems like that engine is a rubik's cube. The main reason for starter motor failure is that stupid box filter housing that sucks as much air as it does fuel. The first thing I do is change it out to a spin on filter housing and a WIX filter.

    There's a wire leading to the fuel shutoff solenoid on top of the db2, when unplugged or not powered it will never start.
    If the advance solenoid at the pump is not working, you'll have to press the pedal to help it start and keep running, at least until it's hot.
    The mechanical lift pump on the lower passenger side could also be out, if replacing put a new push pin with the lift pump.
    The fuel filter box (water separator) tends to leak out the back...badly, at times preventing enough pressure buildup for a start. A replacement water separator from Car Quest or Napa works as good. Remove the whole assembly and place new water separator there. The existing holes work to bolt down the new water separator in place.
    If it's a model with an EGR (1500 and some 2500's) remove EGR and purchase 3500 intake gaskets which have the EGR holes covered. You'll gain power as well, and it's safe on the tranny.
    Glow plugs might need replaced, could be part of the issue. When removing, soak pretty well in bolt remover liquid like PB Blaster, and wiggle out slowly to avoid them breaking apart. Replace with Bosch preferably, as the Delco tend to accumulate soot, thus making hard to remove.
    Naturally, bleed all air and it should fire up. I've had both the 6.2 and 6.5 with either the db2 or ds4 pumps, respectively. Easiest engine to work on, for a diesel.

    Don't forget to put the brace on the back of the starter because they are known to shear the starter bolt or crack the corner of the block off which it did with my father's 82 6.2 that bent angle iron that bolts to the back of the starter and the block will stop that from happening you would not like our fix after the block broke off had to weld a bolt in place to replace one of the two main bolts that hold it and use a nut and lock washer and flat washer plus the brace on the other end

    Block heater , good glowplug system, electric pump and two good batteries a must. Worthwhile to run the pump without glowplugs with ignition on to purge air from the lines as much as possible before starting attempt. The injection pump will still need to be purged. If no go, remove the pump cover and check the linkage inside hasn't gotten stiff. Soak with biodiesel and gently free up if it's stuck. Crack the lines open at the injectors and check fuel coming out to purge the lines. If no fuel comes out, the stanadyne injection pump has an issue. You can check out my video how to episodes to see how to get these engines running even when others gave up. I'm running an engine used cross country that was abandoned in a farmer's field some years back, and resurrected a turbo version some others failed to get running.

    Dont exactly intend on telling a man older then myself how to do things . Under the respect policy I carry . But if I'm able to share experience, look what you do now is cancel glow plugs , crack open a injector line. Start with a lower position on the rotary pump open the throttle to full position during this process. Side to side doesn't matter. As you get like 4 or 5 dont open full as it may start. Being it was shut down then wouldn't start I'd think the pump is ok.
    My dad ran these back in the day also 5.7 prior , later on he came up with a 6.9 in a pickup for me to buy. Ive had it since. I hope this insite helps .

  • @consaka1
    @consaka1 3 роки тому

    Key thing for these is cranking speed. Generally a healthy engine really needs both batteries. That is cranking so well on one battery I suspect the compression is really low. You should be getting 350 to 375 psi in compression if I remember correctly. 400 psi for a like new cylinder.

  • @notyou6950
    @notyou6950 3 роки тому

    Make sure you got fuel at the injection pump and then bleed the injectors. Glow plugs should be 1.5 ohm each. Two batteries are a must in this motor. Block heather is nice thing that helps on a cold day.

    I had a 6.2 that got hard to start and found that the rings got stuck for some reason.

    Lot of people dont like the 6.2 they confuse it with the 350 diesel the 3 6.2 I've had were all great 1 had 320 k on the engine

    I bought an 83 with 6.2 hadn't ran in 8 years. Not knowing a damn thing bout diesels, UA-camd info... Pressurized the fuel tank with compressed air, had fuel in filters, a new starter, cranked til it started. Oh by the way, fuel smelled like turpentine. It was that old. But started.

    My 7.3 Superduty would crank over with one battery, but it had to have two to crank and run.

    I’ve got an 82 6.2L with dual tanks, I’m going to do away with the entire setup and put one 40 gallon suburban tank under the bed, much less of a headache.
