Loose Watercolor Poppy Flower Tutorial - Paint with Me

- In this tutorial, I’m going to share with you the loose watercolor flower tutorial that I did on Instagram Live with some of my friends. One thing that I think people often forget is that “loose” or “modern” watercolor does not mean “quick and easy”. While aspects of the process are faster than more realistic watercolor techniques, it’s important to note that the level of concentration, instinct and artistic knowledge are far greater with looser watercolor techniques due to the more abstract style. You’re doing more than capturing the essence of likeness of a flower-you’re playing with composition, color theory and flow.

Friday morning on the West Coast - what a perfect way to start my day. Your poppies are beautiful, hopefully mine will be as well. Thank you
Deanna Munro I would love to see how yours turn out!!
Beautiful! I hope you do lots more longer tutorials as I am eager to learn. Thank you for sharing your talent!!!
Another loose painting is in the works! Hopefully that video will be up in a few weeks 💕
I learn so much from your videos! Thank you - super inspiring
I’m so glad you are enjoying them!!
So beautiful and you make it look so easy. That's because you are so experienced. Thank you for this wonderful video and for sharing your talent.
Thanks so much 😊 I'm so glad you enjoyed it-and I really appreciate you taking the time to encourage me!
Molto belli ed eleganti grazie
Beautiful. I like the pods light in the background. A trick to get those hairs on the stem and pods use a pin or needle and pull out little flicks when the paint is still damp so your stem doesn't get wider.
Great tip! I definitely need to use a finer brush next time if nothing else!
Thank you! This has been so very helpful.
So glad!! Not my usual technique but so fun for something fresh and different
Thanks for sharing. I’m looking for guides on how to paint poppies loosely and found your channel. Very helpful that you explain your process and the colors that you use. I also like your approach of pre-mixing the shades that you will use. Very helpful and inspiring. Keep it up!
So glad you found it helpful!! Lots of artists mix their paint directly on the canvas, and while that definitely isn’t “wrong”, I’m a control freak about my color 😅 both good techniques, just different
Fabulous like always. Love your art.
**!!Ɗɑɳiรɦ!!** ghaffar oh, thank you darling!! 🥰🥰🥰
Beautiful loose poppies! Love them!!! It would be nice to see sunflowers! :)
Laina Reeves ooooh! Loose sunflowers would be beautiful
Love them, thanks 🇬🇧🙏
So glad you enjoyed the tutorial! ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you! It’s beautiful!
So glad you enjoyed this tutorial! Thank you for the feedback 🥰
Love this painting, poppies are my favourite flower. I have been painting with acrylics for many years, but now I am trying out watercolours, hopefully I can easily learn. New subbie from Northern Alberta, Canada 🇨🇦. TFS!
Welcome! I hope you are enjoying watercolors so far! Very different from Acrylics but so fun and unique :)
So beautiful! ❤
Thank you!
It turned out so beautiful! Thank you for sharing!!
If there is anything I’ve learned, and relearned, is that we are our own worst critics!
So true! Unless you married a fellow artist... then he might be a critic but he’s always right, hah!
thanks so much for sharing!
So glad you enjoyed it!!
just beautiful
Thank you so much, Darlene!! 🥰🥰🥰
Awesome!
Oh thank you, Julie! You have been so encouraging to me today, hah!
Beautiful..thanks
So glad you enjoyed it!
❤️ was waiting for your video
First Friday of every month! Tried to get another one in but too busy with the twins!
@@katrinacrouch it's fine, but love❤️ to watch your videos 👍🏻😀❤️..
I love this painting! I don’t know why you didn’t like the top one - it’s beautiful!
I guess I’m just extra picky, hah! I know what it was supposed to look like 😅
I just found you and I’m so excited to see and learn more!
Thank you, Bobbi! I’m so sorry I missed your comment originally-so glad we can be friends on this platform 💕
Beautiful drawing
Thank you so much!
Beautiful! Just curious as to what brand hb pencils you used for your sketch?
This is is probably my Faber-castell Tk9400, but it doesn’t really matter as long as it is erasable and light!
I cannot wait to try this!! Do you happen to share a copy of your reference photo/image?
I didn’t this time because I just searched “poppy” on Pinterest and worked off several of the photos 😅
@@katrinacrouch Gotcha!! Thank you for getting back to me, & you did so quickly!! I stumbled upon you while in the rabbit hole of pistrest....I love you style & teaching method!! Thankful I found you!!
Did you have to preset it and then let it dry before you started. I notice no tape on sides to keep it from warping?
I don’t use enough water to get much warping. That is more likely to happen if you are covering the entire piece with water (like a landscape, for example)
What side of the paper do you use...the smooth or bumpy
Are used to favor the soother side, but I started to notice that my paintings actually looked better on the bumpy side! Probably a coincidence because I was more relaxed using recycled paper (the back of older painting). I don’t really notice a difference now to be honest 🤷🏼♀️
Planning my next "loose" watercolor tutorial-what flower (or other subject) do you want to see?
I love trees and hands - I can almost paint a tree but hands are waaaay beyond my reach.
Deanna Munro hands are hard! We automatically revert to formula instead of what we can see and then it looks strange
Lavender flowers are my favorite and I always struggle to paint them
Blushed Design peony’s are my favorite!!
Loose sunflowers would be great!
really awesome...but sound is too low
I have started to hear that from my mobile device students! Apparently computers are easier, but I'm trying to raise the volume on my recordings (hopefully the hummingbird tutorial that I just posted is better!). Thank you for letting me know!
I like these a lot, but poppies have only 4 pattels. for me this is a different flower. which is ok. but that means, we could recreate this with any colour we like. we don't need to go with the reference. isn't it?
This didn’t follow a strict reference, though I used a few to guide the overall structure of the petals
@@katrinacrouch I just mentioned it, because you mentioned a reference. we didn't see it. beut when mentioned, it sounded as if it was of some significance at one point in the video
Is there any reason for you heavy breathing 😉😂?
Actually, yes! I was about 8.5 months pregnant with twins and had a microphone about 4 inches from my face when I recorded this. If this bothers you this much, then you might want to skip my videos from 2020!
