My mom grew up in Galveston TX. They would go to the docks and watch the fisherman pull the sharks out of their nets and cut them open to see what they had consumed. 1 shark had a Louisiana license plate, another had a whole roll of tar paper and another had a laced up boot with a skeletal foot inside. My mom tells the story of her walking on the beach in ankle deep water with my brother and she saw something move out of the corner of her eye. Instinctively she grabbed my brother by the wrist and lifted him straight up as a shark beached himself right where my brother was standing. My mom thinks the shark was going after my brother, he was only 2. The shark was able to easily wiggle back into the water, but I absolutely refuse to go into the ocean any deeper than my ankles. I'll say it...I'm a big chicken shit and I've got this aversion to pain. I think it'd hurt really bad if I got bit by one, so nope not gonna put myself in a position to find out. NO! NO! NO! NOT GONNA DO IT!!
Shark experts around the world all agree that they would never let their family members into the ocean beyond their thighs or hips. That certainly tells me something.
Predators single out their prey because herds protect each other. Hard to enjoy your seal if his buddies are biting you in the eyes lol. If the predator doesn't sense an easy meal they'll wait for a better opportunity or find a meal elsewhere.
idk, it looks like he was also making sure they were gathering up together which is a strong deterrent to the sharks, who have a strong preference for striking solo targets from behind. If you're grouped up and/or looking at them, the shark tends to play it safe. (edit: i'm pretty sure i intended this response for a different comment but whatever at least it's still slightly relevant. just know it was meant for someone else.)
I think surfers are such a badass group. To be able to go out in deep water again and again to surf back in, while looking like a seal, is amazing to me
You have to love something so deeply to get in the water with the big ones. I can only equate that to driving my 5 year old son out to the deep and put him in a float and then telling me to go swim and get him while I am on shore.❤ 😂
I pulled over on the side of the road near a wetland in Queensland. I saw a field covered in funnel web spider nests. There must have been more than a thousand in this tiny area. It looked like the ground was covered in fog. It's the ones you can't see in Australia that get you. Smallest, deadliest predators on any continent.
That’s a lame excuse… there are experienced surfers out in deeper waters. Most beginners stay close to the shore break by the beach…that’s where you’re taught. This is just the most pathetic cliche excuse for not learning to surf. Plus your in groups with instructors who know the water?? Maybe educate yourself on beginner surfing or check out surf lessons before completely ignorantly comparing it to this😂 this is not comparable🤣🙄
You obviously don't realize how strong of a surf culture there is in Australia 90% of Australians live on the coast and grow up surfing and swimming in the ocean, they are out there every day.
You clearly have no experience with surfing at high level or the geographical build and where bigger waves form in other countries… There’s a reason they’re out there… just educate yourself before looking ignorant🙂↔️

I’ve seen a few great whites while surfing, not as big as that one though. Closer between 6ft-10ft. And then a guy got his leg bit by a big one while I was life guarding in Solana Beach, he didn’t make it. But I still surf and hardly think about it, unless I’m all alone out on big days.
Ya well I think they did pretty much . They actually did about the worst thing u can do wich is make a bunch of splashes . To the shark with them on that board they looked like seals
Wouldn't it be wise for surfers and scuba divers to wear like yellow or bright blue suits in shark infested waters? Black tends to make them look more like Food
After an insane amount of video that led me to do a bit of research, I realized that sharks are around humans a lot more than they realize if said humans are in the sea (it doesn’t even need to be the ocean), and by that I mean a lot and really close; just because you can’t see the sharks, it doesn’t mean they aren’t there - if you see them and they wanted “a piece of you”, it would be definitely waaaay to late. Fact is that the water doesn’t need to be deep at all; they will go until their back fin gets sanded and then back away (I have seen it in person and it definitely was an unpleasant surprise 😅). After some “thinking” I decided that oceans are no-go, but I won’t stay away from every single sea (definitely stay away from the Rex Sea - overfishing made sharks desperate for food and they will attack you), but I am not giving up everything in life; after all if they are that close that often I am pretty sure they already “met” me and decided “not this time”. Maybe one day, hopefully not 🤞🏽
