My mom grew up in Galveston TX. They would go to the docks and watch the fisherman pull the sharks out of their nets and cut them open to see what they had consumed. 1 shark had a Louisiana license plate, another had a whole roll of tar paper and another had a laced up boot with a skeletal foot inside. My mom tells the story of her walking on the beach in ankle deep water with my brother and she saw something move out of the corner of her eye. Instinctively she grabbed my brother by the wrist and lifted him straight up as a shark beached himself right where my brother was standing. My mom thinks the shark was going after my brother, he was only 2. The shark was able to easily wiggle back into the water, but I absolutely refuse to go into the ocean any deeper than my ankles. I'll say it...I'm a big chicken shit and I've got this aversion to pain. I think it'd hurt really bad if I got bit by one, so nope not gonna put myself in a position to find out. NO! NO! NO! NOT GONNA DO IT!!

Predators single out their prey because herds protect each other. Hard to enjoy your seal if his buddies are biting you in the eyes lol. If the predator doesn't sense an easy meal they'll wait for a better opportunity or find a meal elsewhere.

idk, it looks like he was also making sure they were gathering up together which is a strong deterrent to the sharks, who have a strong preference for striking solo targets from behind. If you're grouped up and/or looking at them, the shark tends to play it safe.
(edit: i'm pretty sure i intended this response for a different comment but whatever at least it's still slightly relevant. just know it was meant for someone else.)

It looked like the ground was covered in fog. It's the ones you can't see in Australia that get you. Smallest, deadliest predators on any continent.

This is just the most pathetic cliche excuse for not learning to surf. Plus your in groups with instructors who know the water?? Maybe educate yourself on beginner surfing or check out surf lessons before completely ignorantly comparing it to this😂 this is not comparable🤣🙄

After an insane amount of video that led me to do a bit of research, I realized that sharks are around humans a lot more than they realize if said humans are in the sea (it doesn’t even need to be the ocean), and by that I mean a lot and really close; just because you can’t see the sharks, it doesn’t mean they aren’t there - if you see them and they wanted “a piece of you”, it would be definitely waaaay to late. Fact is that the water doesn’t need to be deep at all; they will go until their back fin gets sanded and then back away (I have seen it in person and it definitely was an unpleasant surprise 😅). After some “thinking” I decided that oceans are no-go, but I won’t stay away from every single sea (definitely stay away from the Rex Sea - overfishing made sharks desperate for food and they will attack you), but I am not giving up everything in life; after all if they are that close that often I am pretty sure they already “met” me and decided “not this time”. Maybe one day, hopefully not 🤞🏽

A person gets on an ironing board in the water where sharks live, what could possibly go wrong?

  • @ashleyklotz3762

My own curiosity... because sharks think that we are seals from underneath... would it help.. I mean, would it help to get off the board and stop moving? I love sharks and know quite a bit about them but I have always wondered this

That would be the dumbest thing possible. Board is shield. No board, no defense

@absolutelypro4612 okie dokey.. I really wondered, but all of the docs I've watched never said anything about it, so.. yea, thanks for that.. I don't think I'll ever see them up close, but still, I was curious

There is a device that you can attach to the board that deters sharks- has electric field.

You go inside the cage? Cage goes in the water? You go in the water? Shark's in the water? Our shark? "Farewell and adieu to you, fair Spanish ladies. Farewell and adieu, you ladies of Spain. For we've received orders for to sail back to Boston. And so nevermore shall we see you again." ~ Quint

If I lived in Australia, I’d never get in the water.

Shark looks asleep. And full. Practically bloated.
Good wave. All that noise - would have woke him up.

I can't get with placing myself in harms way then acting scared when that potential harm presents itself. That is ignorance, not surprise.

I may live my entire life without stepping into the water of our oceans ever again. But, I will also never have to worry about looking exactly like lunch for freaking great white sharks. “Stay together. Stay together! Stay Together! STAY TOGETHER! That way he can eat all of us in the easiest way possible. No need to make our hungry diner “work” in order to swallow us. Come on!”

Thought local organizations and governments for events and large demographics used several technologies to keep the sharks at bay like nets, accoustic/sonar, or EMPs. They also rent watch boats and sell ankle devices nowadays so I guess if you value your life you spend the money.

They’re always down there/ out there somewhere… which is why I will never be.
Surfing has got to be amazing but I’ll stick to my skateboard- I don’t have to worry about what’s beneath the pavement…
I could never relax in the ocean enough to enjoy doing anything in it, no matter how much fun it might be.
