India's First Chinese Immigrant Settled Here

India's first Chinese immigrant "Tong Atchew" made his home in Achipur, near Kolkata, He arrived in Kolkata with loads of tea from Guangdong Province in 1778 and set up a sugar mill near the city. As an eastern port, Kolkata was the closest entry into India from China and East Asia. The Chinese population of Kolkata has originated mostly from the workers and associates of Tong Atchew. "Tong Atchew" and "Achipur" holds a special place in all of our hearts.
