Hi GRRRLTraveler, Love all your videos about India, my husband and I are in our 70's and are from Australia and India is our 'only' holiday destination and has been for the past 33 years. We can't get enough of India. You tell it how it is and that is helpful to would be tourists. We go to India twice a year and we love Kolkata and Rajasthan the best. We have travelled north, south, east and west. staying in cheap to moderate hotels and we always have fun. Go with an open mind and come back with heaps of good memories. Australia is so boring after India which is full of excitement.
India is a hugely populated country . And Kolkata is a METROPOLITAN CITY . Every places of Kolkata is very congested and huge crowded. If you go to Tangra you can see there Chinese colony . Most of the Hakka Chinese group live there. You should know that Kolkata was the first colonial capital of India under British bondage. So Kolkata is always populated.
I loved that you can just stand in one spot and so much is going on around you. Nice video Christine. Familiar food like McD's, is nice to have sometimes.
Twenty five seconds into this video I knew this was a city for me...I would love it, even without watching the rest of your video, which I definitely will finish watching! This is my kind of place, lol.
+GRRRLTRAVELER | Christine Kaaloa, not yet...I do have a friend I want to visit in Chennai, there, and now I definitely would like to check out Kolkata/Calcutta, too! Keep posting all these wonderful videos of India, AND everywhere else you were at. I love them all!
@@JayDollarhide eh kolkata is not like that only. This is old north kolkata. Visit Newtown, Victoria memorial, national library. The city is a darling.
you go to princep ghat,Victoria Memorial,Sohid minar,Science City,Eco park,Sibpur botanical garden,Dakhineshwar,Dharmatala,Alipur Zoo,Babu ghat,Birla mondir,Eden Garden,Sealdha,nicco park,st.Paul's cathedral,Marbel place,Raj bhavan,Thakur bari,Kolkata Jain temple,Tipu sultan mosque,Birla planetarium,Belur Math,Vidyasagar Setu,Rabindra Sarabar, and then you say how was kolkata
Great videos. I'm just starting a travel channel myself so I can appreciate the work that goes into these. Respect. Safe travels and thanks for your useful videos.
People are upset that she visited this part, but I don’t see anything wrong with it. I’d love to visit! Nothing wrong with the people here, even if your whole city isn’t like this. I think it’s great
Arindam Sarkar True. But it's sad now people are trying to malign the image of our peaceful livelihood. They don't know here Muslims like Sorshe ilish just like Hindus like Arsalan's Biryani :)
Christine not sure if it was intentional, but you visited all the market places which usually are crowded. You can't generalize a city's culture visiting only a small part of it. Next time you visit Kolkata (Calcutta) please do a little research and visit places which are not so disturbing. Kolkata (Calcutta) is known as the Cultural Capital of India and trust me there are reasons for it. Nowhere in the world, you would see people of vivid nature and varied caste & culture live in perfect harmony as we do in Kolkata. Visit Belur Math the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Mission. People from all over the world, irrespective of the religion that they believe in, visit this temple to enjoy the tranquillity and serenity of this holy place. Visit Princep Ghat, one of Kolkata's earliest recreational spots and a photographer’s paradise. Resting on the banks of the beautiful river Hooghly, this place is adorned with lush trees and expanse of green lawns. Visit Park Street, the party street or recreation zone of Kolkata with N number of restaurants, hotels, discos, and pubs. Take a sneak peek into the history of this place and know how it became one of the most happening places of British Calcutta. When we say Calcutta is the City of Joy, we mean it. Please refer to the website below and you would find plenty of places that may attract you and make your trip more memorable next time. www.calcuttacaravan.com/
I was born here and stayed for 27 glorious years of my life..Then moved to Toronto.. I miss being in Kolkata. They call it the "city of joy". I know all the streets like the back of my hand. You started your video from Chadni Chowk which is also the electronics market for aftermarket parts, then you moved to Gariahat where the shopping for fashionable clothes take place , I also saw the Park Street crossing, where those food stalls were, which is also one of most famous places, that has a cemetery that was made by the British, the last burial took place in 1800s. I dont believe in ghosts but I was possessed while I tried breaking some rules of that place...lol And for the nails..Actually I never thought about it. I always thought it was normal. Now that I realize I dont have them I know you are sepaking the truth.. Loved it
Honking is kind of odd for foreigners in this part of the world. All the honking you hear isn't people just making unnecessary noise, but rather the honking is a sign of drivers on the road conversing and communicating. People there use their horns to tell other people where they are or what they're doing.
You caught essence of Kolkata, could have done the same vlog 25 years ago, not much has changed. BTW, I liked the opening credit, a very refined and polished look. Always look forward to your vlogs.
+lzrdlps Thanks for the compliment and I think I like that it's preserved itself unique traits for as long as it has.! When was the last time you visited? =)
+GRRRLTRAVELER | Christine Kaaloa 25 years, there is something I smell that brings me back to that time. There is something magical about India,, like you said "You either love it or hate it!" Think you fell in love with India a long time ago. When's your next trip?
my wife were in kolkata and stayed at the Peerless Inn..We completed out Golden Triangle tour and came to here to visit our sponsored child..What a great city cleaner than Delhi and Practically no beggars (so far) your videos are such a big help!! traveling from Hawaii btw total stay in India just under a month
GRRRLTRAVELER | Christine Kaaloa-btw where are u from? We are from Hawaii.your last name is a little common over here..jist just curious! Thx for reply!
I don't know but we should respect all cultures and their places because if there is pollution at least people are not complaining and doing their work, we are all human and if you born here then you could be the same and some other person will disrespect you. This is just totally my point of view and nothing else
I just saw 2 boys holding hands at 1:18. Even i am an indian but its weird for me too. But then i felt normal bcoz India is a big country and there is a huge cultural difference from north to south and east to west.

Come to Kolkata Burn all those calories without working out. You can sit and burn tons and tons of fats. Plus lots if pollution to spoil your skin. True fact.
Lalsangzuala Chenkual unfortunately having this much caring about your skin you still have not become the Miss or Mister World! This is so unfortunate! I feel sorry for you buddy.
very good your video greetings, give me the opportunity to learn so different and so distant world , I hope I can someday be able to travel and see them in person grace , thanks for your publications
What do you mean outsiders? They are as much part of Kolkata as you are. Of course it isn't a culture, it is how people are forced to live there amid their struggle for existence.
+GRRRLTRAVELER | Christine Kaaloa Jajajaja!! But I worded that poorly I was trying to refer the upcoming Festival of Lights and the festival (blanking on name) releasing paper lanterns. Keep having fun! Really I wish I could travel with you. So much fun, especially being with such a brave person. Mua!
This is not a balanced portrayal of this city and i don't think it's suppose to be. You need a longer video clip to show alternate realities of this city. But anyway, I can see the beauty of this city through a different mindset, thanks to this clip.
Damm True I am born and raised in Dubai But from last 2 year's I am facing this life on kolkatta middle class family and friends in This city I am really sorry actually I am a big camera shy kind of a person because what I can show you it's mind blowing True and I think people will be confused to take a judgement love or Hate 😑
Recommend American Express card. There are a few places that take them. Got robbed in Delhi once and Am Express loaned me some cash till I got back home. And good old fashioned travelers checks too.
I have a feeling I'd prefer old Calcutta. If it looked too new and modern, it would feel like 'any' other city. The old parts make it distinct, character and I feel humbled by its old beauty.
+GRRRLTRAVELER | Christine Kaaloa Old Calcutta needs to be demolished as it is too old, more that 250 years, houses are about to fall down, very poor people from other states and very poor Bengalis, a lot of them are illegal Muslim immigrants from Bangladesh, live there somehow; they take bath on the streets, this is the standard scenes from City of Joy or Luis Malle films, but this is not the reality. I was there for my university days; we lived differently.
Dipak Basu You are definitely out of your mind. Because these areas are a part of the main cosmopolitan areas of the city. All the main schools and colleges lie in central Kolkata. If something has to be done, it's renovation, which IS happening. Also, this city is developing real fast, if you're talking about "demolishing" central Kolkata, you're talking about snatching it's soul from it, illogical as anything.
wawooooow i like your idea of show online this type of place at Indian and life style here , he he keep rock dear go at those village which they hide and show more oooh
You haven't gone to the nice places in kolkata.i feel pity for your choices.surf the internet and travel next time..or don't complain..every country or city has beautiful places and not so beautiful places(technically)..i fail to understand why would you choose something which you aren't ready to absorb and complain.anyway burrabazar is a wholesale trade area not a mall.lakhs of people go for work, education and business to kolkata everday..i'll include myself too.i never saw my nails turning black!for god's sake.
Amitava Deb you know what why kolkata was dirtiest because there has no BJP government... If kolkata has a BJP government then every paid media make a headline that KOLKATA is the most beautiful city in India. Unfortunately recently Tripura won this title.
almost all ATM machine is labelled with either visa or master card plus a few others. so depending on your card you would have to find an ATM that works. or just enter a bank and ask the teller:)
You've completely captured the beautiful poetry that is the hectic chaos of Kolkata. I stayed at Hotel Maria on Sudder St. for 12 days back in 2007; the general area looks the same. Los Angeles is soo quiet in comparison lol !!! The biggest culture shock for me was the mounds of rubbish piled to shoulder height with smiling barefoot children playing/scavenging through it. Oh and navigating by various putrid odors from block to block. As a "backpacker" I never saw this gleaming "new Kolkata" (those gated massive modern complexes and NRI housing developments) affluent Indians speak of i'm sure it is very nice but what I did see: the Howrah bridge, Victoria Memorial, a cow on the runway at (CCU) Airport, both major rail stations, the zoo, several museums, mother house, beggars & touts... sure sure. I am aware that comparing a city of something like 8 million to the surroundings of the Chowringhee area is like comparing the whole of Los Angeles County to corner 8th Ave & Slauson in South Central obviously the area doesn't represent the entire population ... yup you can still see the Hollywood sign from there (on a clear day) the is soo much more... oh yeah the POLLUTION in INDIA is crazy. I've called Southern California home my whole life and was told (in school) growing up we have the worst pollution IN THE WORLD and that's just not true. I've never come home from a casual stroll with black boogers and soot on my face. Delhi & Kathmandu were just as bad ... Goa or Darjeeling not so much but they still burn rubbish everywhere; so anywhere one might walk there very well could a flaming heap of noxious refuse. A word of advice for any apprehensious travelers looking to ease into the culture shock don't land in Delhi or Kolkata (cheapest I know). Try Chennai or Hyderabad maybe even Bengaluru they're relatively easier to navigate with far less of the initial jarring commotion (although compared to the west; India pretty much anywhere that is developed hustles and bustles 24/7 ). Dive in though there's nothing like feeling ALIVE. Keep up the great work & safe travels
You have missed the real Calcutta of Southern part of it, New town, salt lake, these are now real calcutta, because in the old areas very few people are local, they are either from the western parts of India or Chinese or Muslims.
Stay at taj hotel next time . no pollution nothing . as calm as if none stays there . you will be able to enjoy the lightings there . its wonderful thou costly
Unfortunately this city is flooded with illegitimate people from Bangladesh who r actually without help from anyone .. overcrowding the city and creating slums n obscenity. Can't help .
this woman is traveling in cheap areas, probably she stayed in cheap hotels, nobody comes to Kolkata to visit this kind of places. have some money bfr u travel
She filmed main area of Kolkata (Esplanade/Dharamtala, shop addresses are visible on the video) which is average, not cheap. 5-star Grand Hotel is right there too with hugely overcrowded streets right underneath it. This is only half a mile from the Governor's palace/Indian Museum/Eden Garden/Mother Teresa's shrine/etc, which are among the main attractions in Kolkata. Victoria Memorial is just on the other side of the Maidan. A vast majority of foreigners stay around Sudder Street, which is less than a mile from where she shot the video, so "hv a brain b4 u comnt". If luxury is the only idea of travel, no one would visit India.
+nilsaggu who ever you are and wherever you belong, it is nuts if all foreigners only come to indiA to see proverty.then WHY DON'T THEY visit INDIAN VILLAGES?? TRAVELING ON A METROPOLITAN CITY (Kolkata is a METROPOLITAN city, incase ur brain didn't has this info)and particularly picking up disgusting side of it, is NOT A GOOD SIGN. and the PLACES U mentioned are not at all like this.stop BULLSHITTING
+Rishab Datta if u went to a city and only shows particular side of it and telling that whole city is like that, it is not reasonable. parkstreet , esplanade don't look like that .do u ever visit NEW MARKET, sreeleathers area ?? that is esplanade. no one takes bath in front of Hotel taj or Victoria memorial or shahid minar . i have no problem if they show the whole thing. she must be staying at cheap hotels in sealdah. hope u know that sealdah is not an only place which can describe whole Kolkata
Is that a gay couple around the 1:18 mark? I could swear it looks like they were holding hands at the beginning. I just was shocked as I didn't think that was something that was accepted there.
+Joshua Morgan haha. It's not accepted there; it's an odd cultural difference. It's not to be taken as a sexual relation but affectionate/brotherly type. Oddly, showing affection between a man and woman is less tolerated than between two men. India, Nepal, Korea, and other Asian countries,..etc... you'll see young men walking in the streets holding hands. It's considered normal.
+GRRRLTRAVELER | Christine Kaaloa Ha! Well I wasn't even close then :P... That's neat though... I knew it was socially acceptable in Europe, but had no idea that parts of Asia didn't look at it as taboo as well. It's unfortunate that the US has stigmatized this so bad that as soon as two guys do anything like that, they are instantly labeled gay.
She intentionally visited these places to create a bad impression about Kolkata. there are many beautiful places to visit in kolkata. i pity on you, christine kaaloa, u failed to travell those nice places like botanical garden, JORASANKO THAKURBARI , victoria memorial ......etc
Have you ever traveled +meao guha? I can't see her wasting her money and risking her safety to intentionally show bad places. Personally a lot of places you critical INdians are mentioning are boring and hard for travelers to get to. You must be very ashamed of the truth of your city to slander this video.
Ed Agent , i think travelers dont visit a city to see slums..............there r many places like Eco Park , Rabindratirtha , Botanical Garden etc.................if u find these places boring and hard for travelers , the problem is with you.
They visit india to see poverty also.If they want to see good n clean roads they wud probably stay in their country. Some foreign students come here to do projects on poverty.Accept that india is poor don't be delusional.
meao guha well unfortunately vast majority of kolkata , looks like what is seen in this video. its true that there are some nice and posh areas ,but they are are probably less than 10% of the whole city. You judge a city on the basis of how it looks in general , not by looking at a few clean places
Can't understand why foreigners spend so much to come to India just choose to drop into slum areas in cities rather than going to plenty of good sight seeing places. I seriously doubt their motive. Is somebody paying these white skins to portray India badly before the world bcoz I have seen many of their videos and they all seems to be going at these slums and taking videos there. Have anybody seen Daniel Olson's videos on Kolkata? if we ask them our concerns they say we r nobody to question them and it's their choice where to go. I personally think they r coming into India for some agenda and not for anything else. Govt should take a note of ppl like them and put restrictions for them.
"atleast they are taking baths"? Why the hell did you come, to look down on poor people? And also, the AIR OF INDIA didnt do that to your nails, may be you are the one who really needs a bath.
TridibBiswas ha ha ha ha oooh why are you up set with this video dear there is no problem of been poor and bad environment ,poor people are around the world , by the way I believe people from Kolkata cook delicious food
Great video, Christine! I'm going on a long trip through Asia and India soon and I'll definitely spend a little time in Kolkata. Thanks for sharing

Have you tried north Kolkata? Its allot more hectic. the area you are showing is a place called Guriahat and Buligunge .

it was an under construction overpass which collapsed. The flyover shown here has traffic moving
Great job articulating the experience!
Jay walking
that's how u cross the streets in most cities of world lol
Hey , does that saying “ they make best of what they have got “ applies to India ?
Great travel video!!!! Do you hv ur video trip to haridwar?
It's on my return list! For some reason I always opt for Varanasi vs Haridwar/Rishikesh, even though I hear the latter is cleaner and more mellow =)

you are so close to bangladesh! you can just take a bus from kolkata to dhaka! if you have a visa though.
+Auhona Quazi Unfortunately, I only had one entrance on my India visa. Didn't work out this time.
Hopefully next time!
Mother India - Namaskar! 🙏💓
even asians started makeing fun of the city.
She's from Hawaii, USA.
This is the Old Calcutta, not the Calcutta where the people live ( south Calcutta or New Town or Salt Lake).
I have a feeling I'd prefer old Calcutta. If it looked too new and modern, it would feel like 'any' other city. The old parts make it distinct, character and I feel humbled by its old beauty.
+GRRRLTRAVELER | Christine Kaaloa
Old Calcutta needs to be demolished as it is too old, more that 250 years, houses are about to fall down, very poor people from other states and very poor Bengalis, a lot of them are illegal Muslim immigrants from Bangladesh, live there somehow; they take bath on the streets, this is the standard scenes from City of Joy or Luis Malle films, but this is not the reality. I was there for my university days; we lived differently.
Dipak Basu Demolished? Are you.... well never mind -_-
These areas are too old, most houses are practically falling down. in any other country, these areas would be demolished long ago.
Fabulous vistas thank you
Have you visited Calcutta, India ... What is your nationality?
what is that camera u use?
My camera equipment list is in the description box. =D
wawooooow i like your idea of show online this type of place at Indian and life style here , he he keep rock dear go at those village which they hide and show more oooh
Gee,in 1989 an NZ farmboy,me,flew into Dumdum Calcutta from,Bangkok,it was a shock.I liked Sudder St.🇳🇿👳🏿😂👻☮
" At least there taking a bath"
Rascist much ?
thanks for confirming this is not a city to visit for tourists with children
Surely, specially if you are a human being!!
It is called Kolkata not Kolkada
You haven't gone to the nice places in kolkata.i feel pity for your choices.surf the internet and travel next time..or don't complain..every country or city has beautiful places and not so beautiful places(technically)..i fail to understand why would you choose something which you aren't ready to absorb and complain.anyway burrabazar is a wholesale trade area not a mall.lakhs of people go for work, education and business to kolkata everday..i'll include myself too.i never saw my nails turning black!for god's sake.
where r u from ??
Kolkata is the dirtiest city in the world don't know why all kolkatan people loves kolkata😊😊
Amitava Deb Do come here once. We love haters and dull headeds too. 😊
Amitava Deb you know what why kolkata was dirtiest because there has no BJP government... If kolkata has a BJP government then every paid media make a headline that KOLKATA is the most beautiful city in India. Unfortunately recently Tripura won this title.
how do you know what bank to use when you travel like this
almost all ATM machine is labelled with either visa or master card plus a few others. so depending on your card you would have to find an ATM that works. or just enter a bank and ask the teller:)
I am talking about kolkata
Please come to malaysia,indonesia,and singapore
I'll be doing a few videos on Malaysian Borneo. Indonesia, I'd love to return but this last trip didn't work out (cost of flights soared).
It seem as horn city because every car tut horn and also dense population.
Pretty much all cities are "horn city" here!!
Yes , its our culture . kind of music you know
Feels safe
Kolkata Best city in india
This is cultural heritage n belief ,like u people change husband yearly ,we here don't change our religion
I love kolkata. from bangladesh
Aww !! I love Bangladesh from Kolkata !!!
this is our Kolkata and we r proud of it
incredible
Unfortunately this city is flooded with illegitimate people from Bangladesh who r actually without help from anyone .. overcrowding the city and creating slums n obscenity. Can't help .
OHMYGOSH!!!
What race are u
thankyou :)
Everything's so Neel-Shada in Kolkata..😂😂😂
We r working for history of kolkata
#loveyoukolkata
#illusion
this woman is traveling in cheap areas, probably she stayed in cheap hotels, nobody comes to Kolkata to visit this kind of places. have some money bfr u travel
I so agree with you Tushi!!
She is showing the reality. If u don't want to see that then it's different thing. These problems do exist & we should accept it.
Peace
Joshua Morgan Just because they held hands, you conclude that they're in a relationship?
🤔
I'm pretty sure the nails aren't related to air quality, otherwise you would be very ill
Amazing🌹cantery🌹kolkata🇮🇳
You look really beautiful here, especially your eyes look very attractive.
oh nice.
I want to visit
Some foreign students come here to do projects on poverty.Accept that india is poor don't be delusional.
meao guha
well unfortunately vast majority of kolkata , looks like what is seen in this video.
its true that there are some nice and posh areas ,but they are are probably less than 10% of the whole city.
You judge a city on the basis of how it looks in general , not by looking at a few clean places
Why not fix the problem instead of blaming someone who visited there and shot a video? She is not wrong, the majority of India is like this.
North Indian cities are all like this
Can't understand why foreigners spend so much to come to India just choose to drop into slum areas in cities rather than going to plenty of good sight seeing places.
Thank her instead, he is telling the problem your city has which your own politicians cant do! dumb ass
i can hardly hear u due to the constant honking ..should have edited it better.
*KANGLAKATA BE LIKE😂😂*Kangal poor people lol*
"atleast they are taking baths"? Why the hell did you come, to look down on poor people?
And also, the AIR OF INDIA didnt do that to your nails, may be you are the one who really needs a bath.
TridibBiswas ha ha ha ha oooh why are you up set with this video dear there is no problem of been poor and bad environment ,poor people are around the world , by the way I believe people from Kolkata cook delicious food
Wonder what the bad side of her country looks like.... maybe she should do some videos also!
The bad side of Hawaii is like heaven when compare to India.
Oh noooooooooo...the worst things that catches my attention is on the street...taking bath on there..no traffic rules..jaywalking..etc.
