Rick,
I'm 67 now and I started playing guitar at the age of 13 in 1965. I've played a lot of gigs and recording sessions over those years.
Finding you on UA-cam has been a real pleasure. I enjoy your unending enthusiasm and knowledge for all things music and your desire to pass
it it on. In particular this a great lesson and illustrates that there is always more to learn about the guitar.
All the best,
Joe H.
niceee
This is the densest guitar lesson anybody ever provided : so much in just 7 minutes, God bless you !
Rick just wanted say thanks for all your work
Hi Rick,
I've been watching your videos for months now and they are great fun. Just wanted to send you this message although I don't know why. ;)
I'm now 58 years old and I have been playing piano/organ/synths since I was 7. I even had a record contract in the damp deep 80ies but unfortunately nothing came out of that(you also need luck to make it in the music business...). I picked up a little bit of strumming on the acoustic guitar since I was around 20 years old but just enough to accompany myself when singing in a local pub. ;)
About 5 years ago I swapped the keyboards for electric guitar because I really wanted to learn a new instrument. Been playing for hours every day and I even got my ol' Daion acoustic guitar out of the cupboard again. I took no lessons as it is very hard over here in The Netherlands to find a teacher who can deal with someone who already knows how to play music. I find that most of your lessons on how to play guitar are really useful for me. That's no surprise coming from a music teacher such as yourself of course but still; I learn more from these videos than I would taking lessons in real life.
I just watched this video and it is great fun to discover that I can already play these picking techniques. So this turned out to be a turn on for me even though I did not learn anything from this vid I learned about what I already know and it's great to get that kind of confirmation.
Keep it up, it's great to hear someone with so much experience talk about music! And I'll get the Beato Book in the coming weeks. Or maybe a modes-mug, to amaze my friends and pretend I know all about those things. :)
All the best,
Rob.
@@robertclarkguitar is just that I heard Rick say he reads all of the comments and I want him to know what/who his fan base is. 🤠
Pattern 1: 1:05
Pattern 2: 2:42
Pattern 3: 3:56
Pattern 4: 4:29
Pattern 5: 5:22
thanks
your guitar sounded particularly beautiful in this one.
great!
Oh man-love the sound of that guitar! Every time I hear you play it on the channel, just sounds good
Rick excellent examples for finger picking. Dust in the Wind (Kansas) would have been a good one to add.
Yeah, that's the one that pulled me into fingerstyle, Kerry Livgren's signature tune. Next was Freight Train by Elizabeth Cotten. Then I went head long into Paul Simon, some Stephen Stills, and Jorma Kaukonen. Chet Atkins and Lenny Breau later. - There's just so many great players, old and new, to learm from.
Start The Rebellion freight trains Melody just makes my day better every time I play it
@@MrLardCock - Yeah, that song is so easily customized. You can put so many different spins on it. I've heard it played a hundred different ways by a so many great players, and every one is a treat. I've got a number of different unique ways I've come up with myself, varying in level of ornamentation, which I use to mix it up when I play it. - It's a fun little piece for sure.
😊 My mom stuck that Freight Train song into my head when I was really little! That's another one she'd be singing to me getting me up and at 'em!
Thanks for this Rick!
The first chord that he played reminds me of the opening of the Opeth song “In my Time of Need”.
mtlhero514 yup!
I immediately went back and listened to that masterpiece lol
It is exactly that!
But it has B in the bass instead of E
Was just going to say that
Rick, this is absolutely awesome! I've had a handful of (sometimes quirky) fingerpicking patterns that I figured out myself early on and never really got beyond those. I've been bored with them for years but never really made an attempt to find something that worked better. A few hours spent with this video and I have a bunch of highly usable ones that I am able to immediately integrate into my current repertoire. It's feels like a massive upgrade with just a few new tricks. Mahalo!
Rick, how do you even exist, I watch your videos from time to time and most of the time I'm speechless. Rick is a gem people!
Awesome licks and patterns!
I just started play guitar, even though I'm 30 years old and it's hard. I played piano when I was 13, but I got a serious disease and I never started to play an instrument again, now I'm "okay", still not cured, but I want to enjoy playing music, but I struggle to even skip between chords at the moment. I hope some day I will able to play this patterns.
I'm 29 and never touched a guitar before I got my first this year (then second, oops, haha). I have the same problem, I get chords right super fast but it takes forever to switch them. Loving it anyway. Sorry for your health problem, hope you find a way to enjoy the instrument regardless! Good luck!!
I also started really late. My method for learning chords is to pick two chords (eg D and G) and set my timer for 5min and just go back and forth between them. I just do that two or three times a day and slowly it improves. When those chords are good I'll add in another one or learn a song with a new chord and just practice the changes in the same way. I don't stress too much about how good I am on any particular day, I just make sure I put in the time. It always comes right in the end (even if some difficult chords can take a few weeks or even months).
fingerpicking can actually help if you think about it - you don't need to have the chord ready all at once for a strum, you just need each string to be ready when you pick it! but just practicing chord changes over and over is good, it's hard at first but you develop muscle memory and it just gets a bit easier
fingerpicking's cool though, a lot of the difficulty is just getting used to the pattern of movement, it's a bit like a tongue twister for fingers. Once it clicks it sounds really nice and impressive, and you can use any chords you want under it! Even just a couple of fingers and open strings, and a capo will give you even more open string possibilities. If you have trouble with chords, this ain't a bad thing to learn
Man just practice the motion of switching, without using your strumming hand at all, and go from one to the next then back to the first. That way youre practicing in both direction.
Great lessons Rick
Gold! Thanks Rick! Merry Christmas!!
Fantastic. Something to work on during the holidays. Thanks Rick.
Thank you Rick! A wonderful Holiday Gift to us. Grateful.
Have a Merry Chrismas to you and your family
Great stuff, Rick!
What a beautiful sounding acoustic. So warm.
Thank you for taking the time with these nuggets to pick on over the holidays and beyond. In fact my new year's musical resolution, will surely evolve now, thanks to you.
This is great, esp. the Scarborough Fair lick. I wish I'd seen it in 1966 or 67?. It would have saved me about 6 hours of fumbling around in E- at the 7th fret. Of course, you were only in about 2nd grade then, and Paul Simon didn't show people that much. It's harder to get off of a record. The Gibson sounds great..maybe it's the mic I like? For the interested, the little finger, used only in rasqueado, is called the "e" finger ( short for meninque - hope I've spelled it correctly ). Juan Martin publishes a nice flamenco method which goes WAY deeper than most Americans can read or have time for...also, Paco de Lucia videos are still on the Internet and show really unbelievable flamenco right hand stuff. It's not the same as a classical right hand ( i.e. Segovia technique ) in which the ( right ) wrist is much higher, the elbow is BEHIND the purfling sitting on the SIDE of the lower Bout of the guitar, not hitting the top where it interferes with top vibration ( and changes the angle of the fingers to the strings ). This can be seen on most classically trained guitarists ( for instance: John Williams, Chris Parkening, David Russell, Oscar Ghiglia, Scott Tennant, Julian Bream, Sharon Isben, and on and on. I even think Mick Goodrick uses this ). Hope you have a nice winter down there in Atlanta..not sub zero as it's likely to hit up in the Ohio Valley here.
Another great Beato lesson - Thanks Rick! Would love to see more with fingerpicks if possible. Cheers & Merry Christmas!
Really useful stuff. Thanks for the lesson, RB!

You are absolutely awesome Rick .! With your amazing content and awesome videos ! That inspired me to start my own channel and sharing ideas .!
Thanks Rick so much for sharing! I came to fingerstyle playing through Brazilian music first, but it's a lot of fun to learn these American styles. I've been in a bit of a rhythmic 'rut' lately, so this is a great kickstart for me. Hope you have a wonderful Holiday and Happy New Year to you and your family! 😘
I was just thinking about this thanks a lot for the lesson Rick. I really appreciated.
I love the sound of fingerpicking! Very cool.
Oh bless you Rick
Thanks Rick! More fingerstyle videos would be GREATLY appreciated
Great lesson! Please do more advance acoustic stuff, both steel and nylon guitar. Thank and happy holidays!
Noting this for when I start guitar. Thanks again Rick!
thanks so much - you are the best
With every episode, I watch I am amazed at the depth of your knowledge and how you go about showing us the why's and the why nots.
Hey Rick! Happy holidays to you and yours!
Watched, liked and saved!
Hello Rick. I just wanted to thank you for that channel.. You break songs down, analyze the melodies, harmonies, rhythm, then you show us recording techniques, equalization, mic placement and all studio stuff.
And then, I come back home, Christmas tomorrow, but all I want is my acoustic guitar. And so it happens you made a video on fingerpicking for acoustic guitar, specifically.
Honestly, it's the most complete channel I found on UA-cam.
Thanks again and Merry Christmas; subscribed
Excellent
You amaze me, Rick; your way of the spirit of music.
wonderful!!!!!!!
Dude your channel is my favorite. Keep it up man.
Thanks Rick
This is great. More material on guitar comping, please.
I can really use the information in this video. I stopped playing with picks years ago. Best guitar decision I ever made. I can go back and forth between picking and strumming with ease. It really opens up what you can do on a second's notice. When I need to play power chords I use my index finger to chug.
Thnak you so much Rick for making quality contents for every musician level.
Greetings from France
Thank you, Rick, for an educational year. See you in 2020. Keep on doing good stuff.
is the first chord same as the intro in '' In My Time of Need'' ?
Great video
I'm so chilled out after listening to this video, thanks😎
thank you
Now we are getting to the good stuff! Much appreciated Rick! Please mix in some acoustic lessons if possible in the future! Great video
Very nice! This is what I call Finger picking!
Thanks Rick. This is gold dust. A new practice regime has commenced.
As usual, this is totally solid.
I appreciate what you do Rick. I'm glad there are people, like you, who share their knowledge and experience with others. Please keep it up. Thanks again. Jon L Bullard
Cool!
love you rick
More please Rick.
I saved this and plan to review it several times till I have it. Thank you!
I could just listen to you fingerpick a guitar all night! Sounds amazing Rick
Genius!
Thanks for this one. This is unquestionably my weak spot...and I'll take all the help I can get!
Rick, the video quality of this video is A M A Z I N G !!! and of course the content inside it :D
love that gibson c&w
Can't get "Mica" by Mission of Burma out of my head after that first chord! Great tutorial Rick. Thorough but to the point.
Rock cheers from Ireland 🇮🇪 lad your a rockstar bro 😎
Something about that first pattern that really put Tears by Rush into my head.
Mario Guilliani 120 studies for the right hand is a must!
Villa Lobbos has excellent finger picking exercises
Been trying to get away from the pick a little, so this is perfect for me :)
These are wonderful tricks to know.
One thing is to nail the pattern & forget about the sound at first.
Then you won’t get tripped up when you play it.
Those open string higher notes can get you.
thanks
