      Watchtower was the first piece I witnessed Michael Hedges play back in 1984; that evening was a revelation, earning him two new fans instantly (my late wife and me). Dawes has taken Michael's interpretation of Dylan's song and upped it a notch, playing the vocal line on the guitar, but clearly he's honoring the innovator who paved the path he's furthering. Mad respect to both Michaels.

    I saw Michael Hedges live in 1986 or 87 at the Tarrytown Town Hall, in NY. It was like watching a magician. You can’t have this kind of guitar playing without recognizing the brilliance of Michael Hedges. Mike does a commendable job, and is excellent to listen to, but honestly, I was expecting something totally different and more unique.

      I've used the tuning of the 4th, 5th and 6th string alot, at least with the same tone distances. It makes major and minor chords real easy. If you have a nylon guitar laying around, give it a try! Tune that 6th to a D, keep the A and up a whole tone on the 4th string. So it's DAE. Chords could look like 002, 224, 445 (6th string mentioned first) ... or as Mike Daws plays them in the video around 4:30 . The tuning of the 4th, 5th and 6th string really allows for some ergonomically good playing, and the 1st, 2nd and 3rd string can be adjusted after what fits. So interesting to hear that Michael Hedges also used that tuning.

    • @a2ndopynyn
      @a2ndopynyn 2 роки тому +14

      Hedges used dozens of different tunings. And unlike this guy (no offense meant), and most who play Hedges basic style, the tuning did not dictate the music. Hedges would come up with a musical idea and then tune the guitar to put the harmonics, open strings etc. where he wanted them in order to play it with the desired percussive effects. THAT takes a legendary mind and talent. RIP.

Both Tommy and Mike are so natural and funny together. Mike is just like this on stage; he'll be playing along and have a conversation with the audience... just casual and witty. Had to edit out my ire at the missing mention of Michael Hedges for the All Along the Watchtower performance, because it appears in the longer version. Guess it was edited out for the sake of time. Mike also mentions delving into some of Joni Mitchell's open ("California Kitchen") tunings, too, so gotta give him respect for recognizing that he's standing on the shoulders of giants.
    Still, did Tommy Emmanuel kick the bucket? I think rating guitarists is weird, but T.E. is unbelievable and has been using the "scratch patch" for years, as well as doing all kinds of percussive stuff. And Tommy's cascading harmonics technique is one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard. I've seen Tommy in concert and he can move between styles of music effortlessly and with mastery. I must admit, I feel like Tommy Emmanuel is the most amazing and innovative acoustic guitar musician I've ever seen or heard.

    Rick, I think you are spot on saying that Mike is incredible and one of the best acoustic players. Having seen Tommy Emmanuel and stood with mouth agape at the mastery of the acoustic I had never seen before I would say that the list of folks that play this well is small. I don't like to anoint "Best Ever" but Mike is indeed up there as one of the best. Great take as usual.

In fact I go to Justin’s shows these days just to see Mike. Everyone should, I really mean it, check out his channel & buy his CDs. F AMAZING.

    It's so true - we're so blessed to live in an age where we can simply click a button or two and listen to pure poetry coming from a guitar; Mike Dawes' playing is exquisite and unique and I can listen to his playing for hours - pure joy. BUT when it comes to the GOAT the answer is simple: Tommy Emmanuel.
