    I have been playing guitar for 55 years. Only by ear, I never learned any Theory except very very basic stuff that I just picked up along the way. I haven't told many times I'm a great guitar player, and I just laugh, because I'm a hack. I played great solos but I have no idea what I'm doing or how to make them better. I improvise, I don't plan very much at all. I had a stroke two and a half years ago I lost the use of my left side completely. I have fought hard and got my arm and hand back and I am bound and determined to learn this instrument that I loved all my life. Thank you so very much for these videos. I only have a short amount of time to learn things that I've always wanted to learn, and your channel is helping more than anything I have ever found. I don't understand it yet, but I will

      Roger Williams I also had a stroke and lost all strength and coordination in my left hand. I thru a slide on and was able to keep playing music after months of sounding like a squeeling pig...lol
      I also got the lightest strings on another guitar and never stopped working my fingers. I would do spyder exercises "chromatics" using every finger. At times I had to place my finger on the string with help from my right hand! My advice to you is NEVER give up. You can make those fingers work again and in the mean time still play music using a slide. I am not back 100% but Im a good 85% of normal and playing music BOTH ways now, slide and normal fingering. Chords were killer! start with simple triads and double stops you CAN do it. Good luck to you Brother.

    During this pandemic, I have picked up a guitar for the 1st time in 33 years, all I've ever known was about 5 basic cowboy chords and Ive always wanted to learn how to solo. Ive been practicing roughly 6-10 hours per day on and off throughout the day and all I could do was the pentatonic shapes when Id try to play to a backing track, this lesson opened up so many doors, thank you for putting this out there man, I have a lot more to absorb from this and at first I thought there is no way my old arthritic shitty hands can move that fast but they're getting there and videos like this really help. I can honestly say that reigniting my guitar passion has definitely made my days worth something lately. I suffer from crippling anxiety and depression and the only thing keeping me happy, focused, and driven is the guitar. It seems so impossible at first and my fingers literally peeled the first week from practicing but I can see some light through the tunnel now and again, its videos like this that really help get through the rough sticking points. Music saves lives.

    • @lopezb
      @lopezb 4 роки тому +3

      Agreed. I learned cowboy music from my Dad and then picked up Beatles and Donovan fingerpicking and harmony singing and a little blues soloing and wrote my own songs. But aside from a few jazz lessons long ago never learned properly the fretboard. Rick's attitude and generosity has opened things up for me again and with the virus, I'm back to playing every day after years of stagnation. The idea now is to keep opening up and moving forward-Rick shows it can be done, it's just putting the time in. Everything he shows is logical, but it helps so much to see it done and have it clearly explained.

      @@lopezb whats also helped me learn to keep time and rhythm really well is a game, believe it or not, Rocksmith for PS3 has really kept me going through the frustrating and "boring" lulls of some days. Ive "mastered" (the games words not mine) 7 songs which I had no idea how to play before and can get at least 50-75% on most songs, its also a great tool

    So i did it right. I had one guitar instructor when i was like 14. He walked in, taught my brother bass, came to my room, said what do you want? I said blues. He played the clap and yes album then and there, hendrix, and trower. Wrote down pantatonics, showed me chord formulas. Just like you did in this video. Left me on my own to do the details. It worked. Good video. Peace Rick

    After playing guitar for almost four decades, these Pentatonic exercises you have shown here really inspire me. In the early 1990s I used to do some exercises like this (especially doing patterns with 5 notes, 6 notes, etc.), but I somehow didn't continue to practice these for whatever reason (probably laziness). I'm going to work on these more to further inspire my creativity. I love that playing guitar is a continual learning process since there are really endless possibilities in creating interesting things (patterns, riffs, sounds, etc.) on guitar. Thanks so much for this great video (among all of your other great videos too), Rick!!! :-D

    I'm 66 and learned guitar when i was 13.Someone gave me a chord chart and showed me how to tune. Lots of calluses and practice i was determined to learn. Back then only thing we had was a radio and i would hear a song and would somehow memorize it and tried to figure out the chords, then i would wait for the song to come back on and see if i had it right. Can't read music but i can still figure out songs. Played in bands in my 20's Santana, Creedence, Deep purple , ZZ ,Fats domino and others. Learned that instead of pressing down hard sometimes a lighter touch would have different effects. Don't give up keep practicing.

    Love how he is using the finger numbers instead of naming frets. Most teach patterns and play them in different places on the neck, and then name all the frets. For a beginning I think this bombards the brain with too much info, and makes memorizing the different patterns a lot for difficult. That was certainly the case for me when I started to learn different scales.

    Great video. I think it can be mentioned that playing the same note on different strings can sound different. The tone will differ because of overtones, and the damping of overtones will occur at different rates due to different string characteristics. This is one main reason to use a vertical versus a horizontal pattern at a certain time. Playing a solo is more than just the patterns but the way it sounds; it's not just what you play but how you play it.

    I love your posts. Do a video on not on shapes, scales,,or just patterns, but on how to phrase and improvise using and choosing notes. But also, how to place phrases rhythmically. Consider you teaching a classical player that doesn’t work from positions and scale shapes per se, but works from a deep understanding of the notes on the fret board and rhythm. Where are the phrases being placed in the 12 bar cycle. When improvising. Ready, go…

    I like the vertical concepts and applaud your very instructive videos, but I'd like to suggest one of the most practical and common patterns that wasn't included here is: 3 notes on one string, 2 notes on the next. Example: Em Pentatonic, G - A - B on one string, D - E on the next string. Using only left hand fingers 1 and 3, where you have 2 whole steps on the same string, slide or shift up or down. You can also easily insert the "blue note" (#4/b5).

    One of the best exercises I ever learned was to take any root note and play the first position of the pentatonic scale- most all of us know that position. Now- look at the notes you just played- you played every note in the scale- which means now you just go over the neck and find every occurrence of each note. For instance, Am is A,C,D,E,G- so go find every A, every C, every D, etc.- there you go, that's every position of that scale. Now- do it for every note, including the sharps and flats. And each time draw the neck out like a grid, label each note on the neck (not just the notes you're using), and place dots where the proper notes are for the scale. Now- when you're working on a song out of Am- pull out the Am chart and hang it up on the wall in front of you. But in reality- you won't need it- by the time you get done drawing that neck out this many times, labeling each note, and finding all these positions- you'll have very note memorized and you'll have found all the repeating patterns (and there are tons of them) - and you'll know the neck like the back of your hand.

    Excellent advice on how to practice the pentatonic. I'm one month in as a new beginner. I have the entire pattern (his horizontal, 1-6 string) for the A minor scale from the open string to the 11 fret and then repeat for 12-22 fret. I know the patterns at the open, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 12 fret....don't yet know the notes except at the 5th fret position. So basically all of the a minor across the fretboard.....pretty good (albeit slower as a beginner) going "horizontal" for each position but working on moving up and down the neck with fluidity.
    But now that I know the pattern, going from the minor to major pentatonic is much easier ....just move the entire fretboard pattern over 3 frets over towards the head. Or to change one minor to another minor just shift the entire fretboard pattern over to that particular root on the 6th string. Of course, knowing that is a lot easier than doing it...lol. But loving all this learning. Still working on the index finger to pinky (3 frets over from index) on the 4th, 5th and particularly the 6th string.....my fingers don't stretch that far on the 4--6th strings.

    This is such a great channel. From Bach counterpoint, to how to practice, to deconstructing great songs and convincing me that I'll never develop perfect pitch. Great stuff! Thanks.

    So simple yet so USEFUL! Was in a rut trying to figure out how to go about practicing the minor pentatonic. I've been just kinda wandering around the fretboard picking the scale notes at random. This will keep me busy for a month! Seriously, thank you for this structured approach.

    The main important for me in knowing pentatonic vertically is for transitioning between vertical positions. For example, sometimes it fits to jump halfway up the fretboard, maybe two repeat phrasings a couple octaves higher (I'm thinking Clapton Layla) or just to move yourself into a different pocket in the mix.

    Great job as usual. However the one thing I always stumbled with, with these patterns is knowing where you root is. Because you can work a pattern to death but if you don't know where to start and stop, they're just good finger practice.

      You can root on any string to make a cord . However, start your pattern "rooted" on the 6th The low E string and know your fret board. E F G A B C D. To begin The note you start with is your 1 the root

    The best trick I have ever found for learning the neck for pentatonics is this. Learn the five patterns, two notes per string. Then, learn same but expanded patterns, THREE notes per string. I have seen nobody ever teach this nor explain it. Yes, you will be duplicating notes. But if you learn all the in-between positions of the five like this, you will find you can effortlessly move vertically up and down the neck.

      Great advice man! What is the name of the 3 note per string pattern?

    • @capgage1
      @capgage1 4 роки тому

      @@BrandonShere I have never heard it called anything, never heard anyone talk about it. And I've been playing like forty years, so... anyway I would call it "expanded pentatonic" or something like that. Does it make sense though? Can you at this point plot all five of the pentatonic shapes on the neck, on paper? If so, then go and pick a place and start identitying the three consecutve notes on a string, then do the same on the next and so on. Don't worry if you repeat notes. You'll hopefully start to see some new shapes that are "wider", and start playing vertically up and down the neck. Also, it'll help stretch your hands. You don't have to have huge hands to do this.

    I could be totally wrong, but I think Mr. Beato accidentally mixed up "vertical" and "horizontal" (though he corrects himself at 10:28). Vertical is moving across the strings, like from low E to high E. Horizontal is moving up and down the neck, like from 1st fret to 12th fret... Or am I wrong on this?
    seeing the fingerings used on one string, when he stayed on the high E string, and started on the 3rd fret and went up to the 18th fret, and then back, was super helpful to me. same for the two string exercise.
    You're awesome Mr. Beato!!! u've helped me a bunch--ty ty ty!
