"People worked 12 hour days, 6 days a week without fringe benefits like vacation, health care and pensions." I know people doing that now. Happy labor day
Just goes to show where this society is headed...with all of this technology, going backwards instead of progressing forward. Capitalists only concerned about maximizing profits, forget about the employees who made it possible.
A lot of the American business owners are STILL doing everything they can to keep unions out. My first job was in a factory where it didn't matter if we were hired for full-time or part-time or which shift. They just suddenly announced that everyone had to work eight and a half hours, seven days a week, with no raises or benefits. They even showed videos showing how much better off we were without a union.
I wonder how many people know that Labor Day is a Holiday based on Protesters? Have a Happy Labor Day. And a big thanks to all the workers that are still keeping America going.
Great vid! Worthwhile to point out that Ottawa and Toronto held parallel labour day parades since 1872. Peter J McGuire actually attended the Toronto parade where he got the idea to hold a similar one in NYC a decade later.
good too know!! Ill be working all day tommorow on labor day now I can understand and appreciate the humane laws protecting me as an American worker thank you :)
Except for the US Canada, the rest of the world celebrates labor day on MAY 1. May day was switched to a September labor day by Grover Cleveland, because of big business /capitalist pressure .

Labor Day in Victoria is the second Monday in March. The Stone Masons Union were granted the eight hour day without a reduction in wages in 1856. The first workers in the world to receive it. 888 - eight hours rest, work, recreation, there is a monument to this in Carlton Vic. It soon spread to other occupations including women and children, and throughout Australia. In Victoria it was declared a paid public holiday in 1879. Decades ahead of the US and Canada.
In most countries around the world it's celebrated on May 1st, the official International Workers Day in memory of the Haymarket events. The USA/Canada just decided to move the celebration to another day to avoid the political (anti-government) connotations of IWD.
I used to get labor day off until I got a union job. Actually, the work conditions that brought about labor day sound like the modern trucking industry here in the US. Truckers work 14+ hour days for weeks at a time without much more than the cost of living for pay when you consider their lifestyle. A new driver today makes about what I made as a new driver in 2002. Maybe instead of fighting for wages to increase, someone could figure out how to level off living expenses with more time off from work.
Why are non-Americans so hot to be called Americans? Why is it so important to you that we stop calling ourselves Americans? Your country has a name. If you're Colombian, for example, what do you care?
I heard the majority of people hate their job… I wish we could shift the idea of labor so that everyone feels they have fulfilling and rewarding jobs/lives
It is Labor Day and I'm a retired AFL-CIO affiliated public sector union full-time member. To celebrate I went to my television MUSIC CHOICE selection. For Music of the Seasons - Labor Day. And that saluted me with the Doobie Brothers singing: WHAT THE FOOLS BELIEVE. "What the &%$%?", I asked myself. The next song was titled: LET THE DOGS OUT. " This is &^$", I said to myself. And now the Music Choice Labor Day is giving me Sam Cooke singing me his %@ CHAIN GANG. I decided the Music Choice Channel can go *^#$ itself without me listening.
Happy Labor Day! The fight must continue on! We have not reached the peak even though we've come so far. There's still injustices occurring in the workforce.
Don't disagree with the history at all, but this clip implying that Labor Day celebrates workers' triumphing in wealthy countries is pretty naive. Things are worse elsewhere, but that doesn't mean everything's fine now for workers in Europe and North America. That's ridiculous. There's very obviously still a ruling class that own property and an enormous underclass of workers, who get exploited by them, whether that's being paid too little or charged too much for rent.
Just curious, could you mention anything specific about any Canadian connections to Labour Day? Feels like any mention of Canada in this video was a footnote, like nobody had actually bothered to do any research on Canadian labour history.
Cause it's the day before school starts for many. But yeah, after watching this video, you start to think of the millions of children who don't get to go to school and have to work instead, and you feel a bit more thankful that you have the opportunity to go to school.
Let's be honest here. Labor Day, as well as every other holiday, is all about businesses trying to sell you a bunch of stuff that you don't really need.
While some of us truckers are working 14 hour days, check out our log rules, we go by 3 different clocks, 11,14,&70... That's all well and good though unless you're an OTR driver, that doesn't go home, then it's basically 24,7,365... Shout out though to all the home health aides, that live in the patients home, they may only get paid for 8 or 10 hours, but anything that happens with the patient you're still responsible for,
Well I know what to refer to myself in other parts of the Americans at least, which is probably the main area where people want the distinction. So thank you.
If you look at workplace safety and compensation / fringe Benoit trends from before and after labor unions, you see they didn't accomplish much. Kids were working less, people's jobs were getting safer, and they were getting paid more year after year before the government stepped in.
Yeah, I get what you are saying. But I can tell you that most people from the US would be insulted if someone referred to them with the last 3, and a specific section would really take offense to yankee. I looked up gringos and it seems ok, and United Statan seems the best answer I have gotten so far.
It depends on the union and you have to consider how their power comes about, basically through cooperation of members. The real problem with unions is that while it might seem obvious to create and join them, the reality of what it takes to make a successful union can be unpleasant, and the fact that union leaders are people, the same as the business owners. But to say that it's bad for workers to have the ability to join together and bargain collectively is ridiculous.
Industrial revolution reduced number of dying people (including children, because prior that was the Dark Age, and quality of life chaged dramatically in a short period. Industry save women and children actually. And government and unions only demand, that all.
We as Christians are suppose to "remember the sabbath and keep it holy". Meaning we to are suppose to keep 1 day per week set aside for a complete day off. We due to increased cost of living, but mostly due to a nation without faith fail to do so. As a child I remember lazy Sundays... My parents would even cook on Sunday, they prepared everything Saturday night. Have a great day, God bless!
Well to be honest I don't speak Japanese but I'm sure I've read translations where they refer to Americans as both "Americans" and something along the lines as "State Unadians", as well as some African nations. But since my info is second hand I could be wrong.
a lot of people who come from eastern europe to uk work, do 12h 6 days a week and they don't do it of their own free will. they are made by their employees to do that and if they don't comply they are automatically fired. I have been a victim of that myself. and you get health issues as well. your back gets broke to shit after few years and on top of that you most likely will suffer from depression as you are constantly pressured at work to meet higher and higher targets. shit is ridiculous.
Not to sound pro-child labor, but, many children would rather do something that interests them - to explore - rather than doing things that the authorities want them to do for no apparent benefit. To be set in prison called "public schooling". You could say that children don't know what is best for themselves but adults don't know that either. Today's system of rule is breaking people down from childhood to keep them emotional and kind of childish as voting cattle. This is just a thought.

Labor day itself is ironic. Workers work that day while managers take the day off.
I agree, every lesson in history class should be delivered this way, kids can't complain about the teacher being boring.
*The Workers have to always fight, because the Owner Class sees us all as a commodity and subhuman.*

In Saint Lucia too on 1st May.
I was a nice touch putting a u in the word labour for Canadian Labour Day.
May Day on May 1st is the real Labor Day (May 1, 1886).
Haysmarket affair. Never forget
In Europe we also have the holiday, but it`s on May 1st.

Not to deny the fact that unions can help greatly they can also have their set backs particularly for the individual.
In Canada, Labour Day is usually the last day of summer vacation before school starts. At least, that's how it's been for me since I was in 1st grade.
In the US, Labor/Labour Day is the unofficial end of Summer.

Dude, I'd kill to start school the day after Labour Day. I've never started less than two weeks before that.
Forcing children into school before summer is over is child abuse!
Malls are still open and I work so it doesn't make a difference to me :(

The reason why Europe is different is explained at about 2:15- May Day & Haymarket Square Riots
May 1st is workers day all over the world... and is more important then ever for workers to protest and kick corporate butt
I agree, I know about Europe, I'm from Brussels, Belgium, but living in the US since 1994 (age 13) up until now. I prefer May 1st.
Go back to Europe then
I'm French Canadian and in my college books Americans are, most of the time, called états-unien.

As a child I always wanted to do some (adult's) work. Like manufacturing or something. Never though they had a law on child labor.
