Sadly, 40 hours a week is no longer relevant in this era. Overworking is one of the main causes of depression and stress. We cannot consider 2-4 hours of driving, commuting, preparing, eating, taking a bath, etc as "play time".
That's always been something of a depressing reality for me. The average person has a lot more than 8 hours of their day allocated towards their job, and that time benefits nobody. But when i work for myself on my projects (that will end up helping others, similar but not the same), since i have no jerk boss to tell me what to do, i can be fully focused, working fast and hard for 12 hours a day and instead ifeel energized and fired up and can't wait to wake up and grind more again the next day! Just saying that the numbers of hours working are irrelevant if you truly enjoy what you're doing. Never underestimate the human machine potential.
Started working in a skilled trade apprentice at 13 years old and full tradesman by 18. Worked 50 to 60 hours a week. In the military I pulled many 24 hour work days and several times worked over 36 hours straight. Later in life I stated teaching and lecturing and now am paid to work on base pay for one hour at my leasure. Never hurts to advance your expertise.
I think it's gross how much Americans must work every week to gain only so little in return. I do question how much of this is due to pure workforce size and fear of inflation.
There are people in this country who work hard every day Not for fame or fortune do they strive But the fruits of their labor are worth more than their pay And it's time a few of them were recognized....... Hello Detroit auto workers, let me thank you for your time You work a forty hour week for a livin', just to send it on down the line Hello Pittsburgh steel mill workers, let me thank you for your time You work a forty hour week for a livin', just to send it on down the line This is for the one who swings the hammer, driving home the nail Or the one behind the counter, ringing up the sale Or the one who fights the fires, the one who brings the mail For everyone who works behind the scenes You can see them every morning in the factories and the fields In the city streets and the quiet country towns Working together like spokes inside a wheel They keep this country turning around
I have just realized with cell phones, people around the world have never been connected like this before but the most efficient way of unionizing is grouping people together in person to talk about things. All the distractions on the phone have separated people to the point where all the working class will just shut up and do whatever the government ask due to all of the distractions
Have you heard of the UA-camr CGP Grey? He has a great video on why its better to have the weekend on Wednesday and Saturday. People would be able to have a better time because they aren't as tired, and productivity might go up!
Believe it or not I work at a grocery store and work 40hrs/week with sat and sun off. This is almost a unicorn of a schedule considering I don't work on the busiest day of the week.
I easily work more than 40 hours a week as every day including weekends as I teach part time (it's been all online for the past year and will be for the remainder of this year) at multiple locations and run a website and UA-cam channel, where it all adds up. I pretty much wake up, eat breakfast, work for several hours, eat lunch/dinner, go for at least a mile walk before lifting weights and showering, and then resume working until late. I often don't go to sleep until maybe 2 AM and then get up around 7 AM. On March 31st, for example, after grading during the day, I spent about 4 hours from c. 8 PM to midnight making my April Fools video on Antarctica...and the video probably made less than a dollar so far as it only has a few hundred views. I took a break to watch _Godzilla vs. Kong_ on Wednesday but had difficulty staying awake despite all the action and cool effects.
@@ShubhamMishrabro I've never really seen myself living to old age, but I hope that maybe something will pan out that can allow me to not have to work as much, maybe even something as simple as my channel getting picked up by the UA-cam algorithm or something. Most of what I do is to benefit/take care of/help others, not so much myself.
Political activity of workers a hundred years ago - instead of a 96-hour work week, a 40-hour work week. No political activity for a hundred years - still 40 hour work week.
I would say we should rethink the calendar. 360 days a year (with a 5 days for new years) 12 months, 30 days per month. 3 weeks per month. 10 days per week. You work for 3 days, get 1 day off, then 3 more work days, then get a 3 day weekend.
30 hours work week? yes life isn't all about work, real freedom comes from spending time to learn about ourselves, spending time with family and friends.
I'm glad to see Mr. Beat talking about this kind of issue. I'm a Socialist myself so seeing you talk about May Day and the Haymarket Affair is nice. Its really sad that you, and so many other American and non-American, have to work so long for barely enough to live on in many cases. In Finland, students take classes for 20 hours a week and get about 15-30 minutes of homework.
We have gotten more and more productive, but rather than using that productivity to give ourselves more time we have instead used it to make more crap to consume.
Teachers absolutely deserve a higher wage and more respect
I know I am biased, but I tend to agree with that statement. :)

I love to see your vids about the presidents and the presidential elections. They're so informational. Keep up the good work.
I work in a factory and some weeks I had to work 70-80hrs. I work a ton of Saturdays and everything the labor movements fought for is being slowly rolled back.
At least your getting 30-40 hours of overtime pay.
@@help4343 I quit that job. The overtime there wasn't worth the stress, isolation, and alienation you felt. I had no time to spend with my family and was tired all the time

I feel you man, I am single but working 60 hr weeks is still stressing me out. At least I am only working 5 twelve hour shifts a week now instead of 6.
You're my go-to for understanding the states better.Thanks a lot, Mr.beast.
Very interesting!
Heck yeah
when i work for someone else, the 8 hours a day model drains me of all my physical & mental energy to the point where i lose the will to love and have to spend the remaining 16 hours intoxicated & resting to forget about that BS.
I love that Betsy Ross flag on the wall. Keep up.the great work Mr. Beat.
Engineer here. Conservative estimate is 60 hrs a week. But when things are fun, can be upto 90.
5:42 My name is Owen too!!
I think it's gross how much Americans must work every week to gain only so little in return. I do question how much of this is due to pure workforce size and fear of inflation.
Thank You too, Mr. Beat. I love watching your videos too.
that is the question I ask myself everyday
My mom an elderly woman has to work 50 hours a week so that is even worse than forty for a normal person
There are people in this country who work hard every day
Not for fame or fortune do they strive
But the fruits of their labor are worth more than their pay
And it's time a few of them were recognized.......
Hello Detroit auto workers, let me thank you for your time
You work a forty hour week for a livin', just to send it on down the line
Hello Pittsburgh steel mill workers, let me thank you for your time
You work a forty hour week for a livin', just to send it on down the line
This is for the one who swings the hammer, driving home the nail
Or the one behind the counter, ringing up the sale
Or the one who fights the fires, the one who brings the mail
For everyone who works behind the scenes
You can see them every morning in the factories and the fields
In the city streets and the quiet country towns
Working together like spokes inside a wheel
They keep this country turning around
Thank socialists, communists, and labor activists for the labor reforms of the 1930s.

Exactly.

A better question is, who is socialism bad for?
I am for socialism, I was just throwing in a little sarcasm.
the real question is "why don't we work less", another world *_IS_* possible *_IF_* we fight for it.
Mr. Beat: A teacher works 42 hours a week
Me: ::cries in special education teacher and high school wrestling coach::
So you have EXTRA jobs. :)
I have just realized with cell phones, people around the world have never been connected like this before but the most efficient way of unionizing is grouping people together in person to talk about things. All the distractions on the phone have separated people to the point where all the working class will just shut up and do whatever the government ask due to all of the distractions
I wish I was a student in one of Mr. Beats classes xD
Great video! I show my friends and family all your videos. This video was especially relatable! Keep up the great work!!
I'd rather have Wednesday and Saturday off instead of Saturday and Sunday.
There is actually some mental science to back you up having split up days off for rest to prevent the week from dragging in and getting recouperated .
Have you heard of the UA-camr CGP Grey? He has a great video on why its better to have the weekend on Wednesday and Saturday. People would be able to have a better time because they aren't as tired, and productivity might go up!
My old work schedule had me off Sundays and Wednesdays. There are advantages and disadvantages to that schedule.
I'd rather have Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday off.
Believe it or not I work at a grocery store and work 40hrs/week with sat and sun off. This is almost a unicorn of a schedule considering I don't work on the busiest day of the week.
Short answer: "because unions fought for it."
Long answer: "because unions fought for it."
Unions are the best! My earliest memory is being on the picket line of a strike, so i guess you could say I’m a life enthusiast
We work more now because get paid less am i right? i feel like I'm right.
Teachers are our country’s greatest treasure
$7.50. That’s the reason for a lot of us
$7.25 per hour is the minimum wage in Kansas, unfortunately.
You health will get ruined. Never compromise on sleep

You work for 3 days, get 1 day off, then 3 more work days, then get a 3 day weekend.
i was literally just thinking this ! its how it should be but dirty capitalism will never allow this
30 hours work week? yes
life isn't all about work, real freedom comes from spending time to learn about ourselves, spending time with family and friends.
Another great video! Thanks, Mr. Beat!
I'm glad to see Mr. Beat talking about this kind of issue. I'm a Socialist myself so seeing you talk about May Day and the Haymarket Affair is nice. Its really sad that you, and so many other American and non-American, have to work so long for barely enough to live on in many cases.
