Glad you guys like it and finally got to it almost 2 years later since I donated it at somm 2 haha. Cheers
I love everything I’ve had from Nikka (From the Barrel, Taketsuru Pure Malt, 17, Miyagiku, Coffey malt, Coffey grain, Coffey gin, Coffey vodka) and plan on grabbing the Nikka Days soon. It’s a solid quality distillery in a sea of commercialized questionable products, many new, that have flooded the Japanese export market.
Also love that Peaches song, SOOOO under-appreciated and under-played 😆
Actually, the band The Presidents of the United States had two hits singles in ‘95 & ‘96, Lump & Peaches, so they are technically a two-hit wonder band.
And the Albums they released was odd, but really good honestly. But that was the time with Cake, Smashing Pumpkins, MArcy Playground, etc in the mid-90s
They also did a popular cover of the Buggles, Video Killed The Radio Star.
Don't forget about Dune Buggy and Kitty too+
My dad used to give us his ice cubes from his scotch and ice when we were kids. Closely tracks w dewars white label so i have a soft spot for it. Thanks guys.
I think I'll stick with Famous Grouse as my budget scotch. Cool to see Nikka doing something closer to budget, even if it does fall short on price. I appreciate the local price comment for comparison.
Also, you actually used my comment. 👀 🍻😂
Dan sporting a new tattoo on his right hand and forearm is more exciting than the Nika Days review. I like their From The Barrel.
If asked for a "starter" Japanese whiskey I normally point people to Suntory Toki. Easy to sip and good in the classic highball. A bonus is the bottle, works great as a replacement for something the cork goes south in or is shaped like a Willett. LOL
Love me some Toki and I can get it for around the price of that Nikka here in south central Indiana.
So I tried to do a High Ball from Nikka Days, and actually it was very nice. It brought out the peat/ smokiness more.
I’ve had A LOT of whisk(e)y in my time, but I was a beer snob way back before Creed was usurped by Nickelback. While I’m not good at whisk(e)y tasting notes, this channel has, oddly, made me a beer super taster. 6 months ago I couldn’t’ve said Negra Modelo was rich caramel followed by buckwheat honey, or that Devil’s Backbone Vienna Lager was a can full of slightly underripe apricots, but now it’s obvious. Thanks for helping me rediscover, and refine, my roots. But why was my first Laphroiag experience last week so underwhelming? I was expecting fireworks and got a really friendly Scotch. Am I broken or was I expecting too much?
How could you forget the song "Lump!?"
Beat me to it!
I yelled this out loud!
Wish I could
I just found this Nikka Days this last week on clearance at my local shops for $23 out the door. Ended up pickup up 3 in total after I tasted the first bottle. Super subtle notes, but very delish. Hard to hate, especially at the price point i found it at haha. Cheers, boys!
Would be interesting to hear it compared to Suntory Toki. Probably a more helpful budget comparison, though it won't have that hint of peat (that Rex couldn't find anyway).
6:57 one of the few reasons I love living in a state with state controlled liquor pricing...most of those prices are still accurate because most things here still sell for MSRP.
It makes a big difference, sadly. 😂
I like drinking this in a highball. Reminds me of the stuff I drank when I visited Japan. But Nikka Super is better for similar price where I can get it.
Presidents were a fun band,
let's vote for the Trash Cam...
I dislike the Nikka screw top for some reason! I don't mind Nikka and it is a less expensive Japanese whisky that has some nice qualities. I prefer some of the higher quality Japanese whiskies but for mixing this one would be lovely! I got the mild peated quality on the finish but only in a faint sense. I get more smoke with Dewer's! For a basic blend it's absolutely worth trying! In Vancouver (all over Canada) we pay a lot for alcohol due to high taxes and I just looked up Nikka Days - it would be about $90 a bottle at a government liquor store. I do taste some Miyagikyo in this whisky. It's basic but definitely not bad for someone wanting a less expensive brand. I'd make a Rob Roy with this expression!! It's not high end whisky to have a dram with friends! Awesome video! Cheers!
I just got my barrel section, and I do take GREAT pleasure in knowing Briana had to painfully HANDWRITE me a note. mwahaha... I appreciate the smiley you drew though :)
GOOD MORNING YOU MB'S.... 🥃
happy Humpday
Could the store you checked set the price point higher due to it being "a specialty" Japanese whiskey???
Thanks for the review guys 🥃
Happy HUMP DAY MB's :)
$60 for a Nikka Days in my region, and I'd rather get a 10yo Islay for that price.
I was just listening to The Presidents of the United States of America's self-titled album just last week. Great stuff from beginning to end.
Lump has already been mentioned but don't forget some of their other big hits such as Video Killed The Radio Star, Mach 5, and Kitty.
At that price I think I'd reach for one of the Compass Box Artist or Glasgow blends and have some change.
Fun fact. The lead singer of Presidents went on the make children’s music as Caspar Babypants.
great vid!
Of all the Export Only & NA-limited Japanese Whiskeys, Nikka Days deliver much more bang for the buck than Suntory Toki, Kamiki, Umiki or Jura, etc. To me, it still resembles what Yoichi & Miyagigyo represents, and in areas where Taketsuru pure malt isn't available, Nikka Days make an acceptable substitution. It's more approachable than from the barrel & to me personally better than Coffey Grain & Coffey Malt.
Mmmm...Lump!
Beat me to it!
Was watching this playlist for a Total Wine Class on Japanese Whiskey, but I found the class only focused on Shibui. One of the partners were there. Are any on the list to be reviewed?
Waiting for tbis .. pls review nikka from barrel also
"Lump" was the other big-ish song by that band.
You got my like for the peaches reference
With Suntory Toki being about 34.99 i wonder which would be a better deal?
Here in Australia it is $100AUD but I can get Nikka from the barrel for $10 less. Don't think I'll be reaching for it as a blend. Double the price of Scottish and Irish blends
Man. I love the coffee Grain.
Did the somm get some new ink. Look mandala like. Interesting
Is it bad that when they said a can of peaches that I also went the the song by Presidents of the United States ?
Affordable whiskey? Many stores here in Japan have 4L plastic jugs of Japanese whiskey for less than $40USD.
It tastes "columnar". Which is totally different from "strawberry fruit roll up".
Di d Rax start his day with heavy meats?
If a barrel is filled with a smokey whiskey, does some of that smoke flavor carry over when the barrel is refilled?
absolutely.
Goin to the Country gonna eat alot of Peaches
Nikka Coffey grain is the best
]
Who else keeps hoping they'll show the bucket shots?
How dare you, presidents had several hits.
she's lump, she's lump, she's lump
Little blue dune buggy
7👍
A Japanese whiskey review. Im being treated today.
Id spend $20 more and get Nikka From the Barrel.
OK, OK, enough with the Peaches song. People been using that one against me for years.
Days Nuts...
One song? ... Lump? Kitty? But, I suppose I came here for the whiskey, review, not the music knowledge. :)
