The rough and rocky slabs of Captain Safety in Whistler are the perfect place for Blake to demonstrate the techniques and skills required to ride rock drops and rolls.
Remember that in the wet you should try and modulate your speed before the rocks to avoid braking and locking your wheels on the slippery surface.
And if you're unsure about any trail feature, check it out on foot before you ride it.

Do you have any tips for riding rock rolls and drops? Leave them in the comments below 👇
Hi Tom I agree completely that could end horribly
do not lock your wheels like @blakesamson did and presented you how bad rear wheel can slide to the side on this left technical line ;-)
Don’t just lean back to go down steep trails, your arms will end up being perfect straight so you won’t be able to turn and you won’t have any weight on the front tyre. Instead get in a hunted down position with the legs bent to get your weight low on the bike
Pray to the mountain gods and don’t blink, lol.
Keep your center of gravity over the bottom bracket, stay relaxed, and look down the trail. Have faith in the bike!
U are my favourite representator blake
I love how Blake does as if he's a beginner😂
Blake’s energy is only rivaled by Robs craziness!!!
Nice one Blakey confidence is the main key and never freeze up half way down have done so in the past and always end upside down happy days .
I learnt it's good idea going slow first time. Just yesterday I happened to find a nice natural forest trail on my evening bike ride. First I walked through it..seemed nice and fun. Started riding, felt confident and let go off the brakes a bit. Messed up timing on a small drop and over the bars I go! When I went back to the drop I realized I could easily make it going much much slower as my BB was high enough to clear it. So for me lesson learned is that if the feature can be ridden slowly it should be ridden slowly until getting 100% confident.
Now I just wait a few days to heal my scratched forearms (what's forest equivalent of road-rash?) and go again conquer that trail!
This is presentation, and information perfection! My ridged bike thanks you!
Awesome tips I got one rock wall I been trying to conquer! Your tips just gave me a Advantage
Stay relaxed to flow around bumps, don’t tense up and leave it to the suspension. I had a problem with squeezing my grips too much on steeps which can mess up your front wheel placement
Good tips!
Just rode some of these in Whistler for my birthday last week!
Happy birthday!
Whew! Those last two were big ones! Well done mate!
Great vid as always Blake. On a side note was wondering if Martyn has been in touch with Kristina Vogel since her tragic accident? He's the kind of inspiring person that could offer real support to a fellow cyclist like her in this challenging time.
Would love to see y’all ride the Slick Rock trails in Moab!
Great tips on rock rolls. Especially on avoiding locking up the wheels. Tire compound makes a difference here. Wish I had seen this before my first rock rolls at Whistler!
I built myself a sketchy rock roll at my farm and I’m too scared to do it lol. This video did help though. Thanks GMBN!
Love your videos so much.
I chickened out on a rock roll today. It was about 12 feet high and looks strait down at the top. It would be nice to find something half the size first. I might try it next time with these techniques.
Another great vid from you buddy
Do not lock the rear or front brake no matter what always, ease with braking. Tips from pro mtb riders
Yes need way more dh clips
The local trail to me consists entirely of downhill loose rocks and pebbles combined with jagged rocks sticking up and tire sized mini crevisses occasionally. I can't ride it again until I get some contact lenses or specialised glasses, I can't tell the difference between rocks and crevisses soon enough :( left practising my manuals until then haha
Thanks Blake
Bravo! 👍🏼
nice riding
Yo! Blake what brand of pants you wearing looks sick and stealthy? GMBN LOVE YOUR VIDEO men.
I was riding Detroit rock city in whistler blind and ended up realizing I was on a massive rockroll and just had to commit... it was rly fun
Commitment is key!
That "...and how the pick the perfect line" in the beginning sounds like rapping lol
I will never ride anything this technical but I enjoyed the content very much nonetheless!
YES! More Dh bike Action!
Really useful, your enthusiasm really inspires to have a go.
(curious, what is that chest mount your using under your jersey?)
great video there, keep it up because you are doing an excellent job... but hey, what kind of GoPro mount is it at 6:37, kind of magnet??
Looks awsome to ride mtb but Its just one of my dresms to afford a mtb to ride on trails. Nice video
Yess blake video and are you rwading the comments
Yes nice one
Amazing video.
Love you videos, sick tricks!!!!
thanks for the love!!!
Ive been mountain biking for about 3 months now should i try this or keep practicing. Edit i have been doing alot of rock rolls and downhill rock gardens your tips are great
I think just getting down would do me lol, i'll leave the creativity to the pro's :)
Do you have a strong magnet holding your gopro chest mount? Can you show me that beccause thats pretty awesome
any further advice on braking strategies... front vs rear brake? If you're freaked about going over the front bars, you might want to avoid using your front brake entirely, but that's probably a mistake, right?
I gotta find some rock rolls to ride!
Blake Samson is air better than coil when you go Freeriding? I heard it heats up fast and affects performance. Is that true bro?
Grate but I would like to see the same rocks with doing the same with a normal xc bike just to know if the technic is similar
Why would the technique be different? Body position and feathered brakes. Line choice, confidance and pray!!
The technique is generally the same, though it is a lot more difficult because the bike isn't as forgiving.
How have you fitted your GoPro to your top I’m intrigued? Great video should be visiting Squamish next week from the uk so I need so tips for riding slabs.
Hey Blake. Great video! I noticed the GoPro sticking out of your jersey. How exactly do you have that mounted? Do you have a chesty under your jersey with a hole punched through or some sort of magnetic mount? I really like the more stealth approach vs. the typical exposed chest mount.
The squamish guys talk about only using the front brake. What’s the right braking technique?
What do you think about the trek roscoe 8 anyway I love your channel
Awesome hardtail, good components for the price. I ride this more now than my carbon Procaliber.
My brother has just gotten one and I must say it is such a great bike and at a great price.
Nice!
when should you rock roll or just drop?
Is this all the same for Hardtails?
Wow that like:dislike ratio is huuuuuuge!!
Took me 2/3 times of no advice going down rocks and using my front brakes to control then falling over the handle bars and not understanding what I was doing wrong!
Are you using rear breaks going down?
Should one modulate with both breaks or only rear?
Both brakes! If you modulate with the rear only then you'll probably lock up. The front brake has much more power and will give you much more control.
What about riding them whit an xc (front) bike? Do you think it would be possible or it will finish with a crash (because of the geometry, the shortnes of the fork and the absence of a rear shok)?
#askgmbn can u make video on ideal weather and ideal soil to ride on
What trails are these rock rolls on? Thanks 🤟
What's the best frame color for a hardtail mtb?
Blake you are awesome,
I was shitting just watching these 🙀
6:38 what sort of chesty mount for your go pro is that?
Just the standard one, but Blake prefers to wear it under his jersey, cutting a hole for it to poke out!
What bike is he riding
Scott Gambler
Hi Blake, just wanna ask what’s the name of this trail? Looks like a good spot for me to hone my skills I’m planning in going back before the park close for winter. Thanks
This is Schleyer and Upper Joyride, the entrance is right next to the start of B-Line.
I see, thank you 👍🏼
You should also stress the need to look for and expect other riders to be coming through.
I'd be mad if I sent it down a steep roll and was forced to bail 'cause someone was standing in the middle of it.
any advice on ones i can’t even walk down? 😂
I like how he can eat those rocks for breakfast and shows some fear to be relatable to us noobs.
Blake what pants are those?
I have just conquered it bout 10 mins ago
Awesome Jack!
No hard tail today, Blake? 😬
Another pro tip: if something seems dangerous make a friend do it first, if he doesnt die you know you're safe and if he does theres 7 billion potential replacemets! Simple really 😎
thanks blake really helpful, but you could just jump over the rocks, haha
Lovely, now go and ride those on a XC bike for some challenge. 👍
If you don’t ride rocks then you will never have to worry
Hey this is kind of unrelated but I'm new to mountain biking and just wondering if anyone has any advice. I have pretty weak wrists due to breaks in each from falling off horses.
Every time I try to get the front wheel off the ground my wrists basically lock up after pressing down on the bars and it's really painful so I can't pull up again after. I can't get up a kerb properly or manual or even get the front wheel more than about an inch off the ground because I need to 'reset' my wrists every time!! Does anyone know how to strengthen your wrists? Or maybe I should try braces??
Feel like I can't progress past any more than just sitting on a bike and it's so frustrating!!
Ergon make grips with little wings that support your wrists. Also learn to manual to lift front it uses your body weight and bike not arms they just support. There are vids on this channel or skills with Phil channel
@@paulbyrne4214 thanks man thats really helpful I'll check them out
I wish i had a bike to ride right now :( ...
Hi gmbn I an about to buy a trek remedy what do you think
An also I love the vids keep it up!
A very capable bike
what the heck are those trainers man?
I honestly can't picture you getting a bit scared I don't even think that's even challenging for you
!

Not even 1k views with more than 900k subs. Why?
Because it was just put live less than 2 hours ago
Global Mountain Bike Network Still it's not too much. And I'm not saying that it is your fault or hating on you.

Anyone agree mtb is too expensive
No,
You can get cheap stuff that is good and work your way up
1400 for a Hawk Hill
MTB is only expensive up front when you buy your gear, then its nearly free. Most trails are free to ride unless you are going to a downhill park.
Yes can be, but plenty of much better riders than me on half the gear ive got. Tools are expensive and many are specialised so need a group of riders to help each other out.
