    From how I understand it Carthage did occasionally participate in children sacrifice rituals but the extent to which they did was greatly exaggerated by the Romans to justify the Punic Wars and their expansion.

      It wasn’t occasional, they found tons of sacrificial jars filled with the remains of children in the ruins. What was propaganda was that the Greeks and Romans didn’t commit human sacrifice. Following the loss at Cannae the Romans buried a Greek man and woman alive to try and regain the favor of the gods

      @@seabear_5312 pretty much everyone had human sacrifices in antiquity at some point. In the Old Testament, written by the Phoenicians' cousins, the Hebrews (who spoke a language mutually intelligible with Phoenician), the direct prohibition of human sacrifice implied that it was common.

    The dad jokes and the puns are literally one of the prime reasons I watch your material. I'm thinking in the future I'm gonna make a short video comp (maybe 10 mins) of your jokes, unrelated storytelling, and all the times you say "I've gotta turn my notifications on". It'll be hilarious (and of course crediting you). We love you Apollo. ❤☕

    The Carthaginians did indeed sacrifice children regularly. Dozens of jars with the cremated remains of dozens of children in each were found in the ruins of the city. The propaganda is that the Greeks and Romans were too civilized for human sacrifice, which they did OCCASIONALLY partake in. Particularly after the battle of Cannae the Romans buried a Greek man and woman alive as a sacrifice to regain the gods’ favor. Human sacrifice in Greek and Roman society was rare though. Especially when compared to Punic and Phoenician society.

    • @oleksijm

      "Greek and Roman Soviet" that must have been a typo, but damn, WHAT a typo. Freud must be laughing at this one really hard. After reading Plato's "Republic" I can't help but call it the "Soviet Republic" because this is very much what it alludes to.

    • @mack626
      @mack626 2 роки тому +6

      The Romans would also strangle captured enemies (after years of imprisonment) during their triumphs. They would act like it’s not actually a sacrifice, but they would do it on the steps of a temple for everyone to witness the ceremony... it’s sort of up for debate but I think that counts as human sacrifice.

    **Spoiler Comment**
    It really was never close, or at least seemed that way. The attackers appeared to dominate the defenders from start to finish. The attackers were like a steady tide of men, steel, and shields. They were always moving forward. Relentless pressure was applied by the attackers from the start of the fight and the defenders seemed like they could never catch their breath or effectively reorganize their defensive lines because of it.

    Do keep in mind everyone did human sacrifices during this time, Maybe the Jews outlawed it but they're the outlier. The big difference was who were the sacrifices this is your own citizens/subjects objects or war booty or conquered goods and resources, including manpower or population.
    Carthage at the time was one of the few if only places that practice the bronze age rituals of sacrificing your own subjects/citizens.That is what horrified both the Greeks and the Romans not that they were human sacrifices is who they were sacrificing. The frequency was also an issue the Romans mostly practiced animal sacrifice, Like everyone else, and only did human sacrifices after great triumphs or disasters to regain their favor or keep their favor to the gods.
    What horrified the rest of the world was that when the Romans did human sacrifice to human sacrifice they did not do so 1,2, or 10 at a time it was hundreds or thousands at once. The end of a triumph is a good example where all of the unfortunate souls being paraded were choked to death ritualistic in front of the temple of Mars, God of War.

    the Carthagers brought indeed living human sacrefices for the god Bahaal, but the assierians also did this. But they where mostly prisoners of war or criminals that where offered... So it was somme kind of propoganda of the romans telling this story. Carthago was verry welthy and the romans didnd like that . So they spread hate propoganda. The spartans also killed childeren by trow it in a deep cave. If the counsel decided the baby was no good.
