Awesome in my neck of the woods. That building in Ray on the corner on Michigan side was my fathers business when I was a child. I remember going to post office on Indiana side to get mail. A banker moved a lot of the buildings that was ray out on ray clear lake road south of ray. He had a sheet metal business there, and then it was a building for lp gas. If I had known you were coming, I would have shown you how to get to the corner of Michigan and Indiana where it goes south in the woods. There's a plaque that was placed there a few years ago, and the corner was correct. As for the state line running east and west, Branch county maintains the road but if you ask a road commission they will tell you like you did that the road meanders back and forth from Indiana to Michigan along it. Thanks for the cool video
@RestlessViking Off of Todd road there's a fence line that goes west into the woods. Just park near the fence if it's not too wet and follow the fence west into the woods. You can't get to it very easy from the west side. If someone stops you, mention my last name you be okay, maybe lol And they surveyed that corner a while back and reset the marker. This was a fun story, thanks for making the video. As to the state governments and their progress on the issue, I think this needs to be weighed against the importance of the matter. Even though the states have expressed their desires to settle the borders finally and certainly, the lack of permanent markers has hardly caused any strife for the citizens of any of the states. I am quite okay with this being a low priority. Governments should always measure the needs of the citizenry when taking action. And failing to get a quorum during the pandemic seems reasonable enough considering the actual need to complete this task. Glad to see they are moving ahead, and will look forward to future videos about the subject.
Your state, no matter which, spends millions uselessly on creating no show jobs for relatives and friends. In Michigan our Governor has spent millions traveling to overseas meetings, and nearly a billion on Chinese battery factories that don't exist. Please try to understand in America today, politics is ruining everything, including your freedom. It is a fun story, but don't forget to assess the 'requirements' for their meeting. And, what these two did not show was the signers of the meeting. Most likely, like documents generated by the State of Michigan, in parenthesis next to the name is (they, them) making sure you are aware of their 'pronouns.' Good luck, from a friend.
@@robnamowicz8073 First, my state is Michigan, and I am confident that you are misrepresenting the current Governor. The battery plant you speak of is being opposed by some members of the community, and by some Republicans who think they can use this as a political weapon against Democrats. They would happily sink the economy to win control. As to the "no show jobs" you mention, there are fewer than you suggest, and scrupulously watched by the opposition in any state. This isn't the 1920s, it's the 2020s, where such corruption is hard to slip through. A previous Michigan Republican Speaker of the House has pleaded guilty in recent months of accepting bribes. But still, I accept that some sneaky deals happen from time to time, and political patronage exists. It happens less often than in the past, and the only fix is persistent diligence. If your goal is to get Republicans back in power, you're on the wrong side. The Michigan GOP is (like most of the rest of the country) in disarray and rife with corrupt actors. The previous GOP Attorney General is under an investigation from a special prosecutor for tampering with voting machines in an effort to overturn the results of the election. If your goal is to sow distrust of the government in general, I can only conclude that you are opposed to democracy and government of, by, and for the People. If you think some non-democratic form of government would be free of corruption, you are delusional and have no real knowledge of history.
Both parties have unscrupulous people in them. To try to pin anything on a particular political party is fruitless. When politicians are making millions of dollars on backdoor deals, our country is in serious trouble.
We should always try to root out corruption, but it has been with us since the beginning of the country. Yet we somehow made it here. We aren't a parliamentary country, so third parties have little power except as a spoiler. And right now one party is dangerously leaning fascist. While the other party is building a broader base of people.

Can you imagine if you’re home was on a border half the house in one state half the house in another, both states would want tax money from you. That would be horrible.
There was a home west of South Bend Indiana shortly after cell towers were popping up everywhere. If you were in the east end of the home your phone showed Eastern Time zone . The west end of the home was in Central Time zone.
I had a coworker in Portland TN that had part of his home in Kentucky and he told me that the state/city taxed you by which state your mailbox was located. One of his neighbors was a Kentucky resident with a house mostly in Tennessee.
Split property tax is common. You can get that from straddling town or county lines. In Escourt Station, Maine and Escourt Canada you can even get it from straddling an international border that runs through some of the houses.
My mother's family is buried in a cemetery behind a church in Moscow, Indiana. The Trowbridges and Marshals are founding families of south central Michigan. My mother was born in Jonesville, Michigan.
Not far from where I live in South Bend is a huge rock indicating the Michigan/Indiana border. The cool thing about a squishy border is the freedom you have to go state to state, a freedom most people do not have.
This situation probably isn't the only one in the country. Maybe it's the biggest one between states. But then, we also have counties. When I lived in western Pennsylvania, a local told me that the heavily-forested border of our county with the next one to the west was "undefined." Because, as he told it, any time a surveyor was sent out to secure the line, he "disappeared." Hmmm.
@@TheMrPeteChannel we had a similar thing on the Belgian-Dutch border (the infamous situation around Baarle-Hertog/Nassau, a complicated mess with enclaves and even some counter enclaves within basically one town). very intersting video! as an indiana resident i wonder about legalization of weed in michigan while still being criminalized in indiana. If you live on the border i could imagine some funny scenerios where you can smoke weed on your porch but if you walk a couple feet you can be arrested
About 16 years ago I was surveying and we were requested to bid on re-establishing the Indiana Michigan border. I live just south (couple hundred feet) of the original Indiana State line. Too bad we didn't win that bid, it would have been an interesting project. After watching your video i see why we didn't win the bid, but this was right about the same time frame that you were speaking of.
Little Long Lake straddles the north-south running border between Michigan and Indiana. When I was growing up, there were different fishing, boating and daylight savings time zone issues to contend with. One thing interesting to note is the accuracy of initial surveys done by individuals around the time of the nation's founding. George Washington surveyed the area where some of my relatives lived in Virginia, whose property was a terminus of one such survey.
There is a live steam museum in Heston, IN that actually crosses the state border with Michigan. It'll be interesting to see if the fan trips of the trains change any.
As someone who has ended up in the ER from "heavily scented personal care products," I am very appreciative of organizations that take thuis disability seriously. And YES, it is a disability, so next time you feel compelled to quip about it, keep that in mind.
I once went to a meeting at our local high school. I was walking south towards an entrance, probably 15 yards from the intersection of the sidewalk and the walk to the door. There was a strong wind blowing at my back which should have carried any odor away from me. A woman reached that intersection at that very instant with perfume so strong that it nearly stopped me in my tracks to wait for it to dissipate. How much product can a person apply that it can defeat a 15mph wind? Even to someone not susceptible to an allergic reaction, that's offensive.

I found a spot where Indiana and Illinois overlap a couple feet too. It happened when the original government section corners on each side were originally set or lost ones were later replaced on what should have been a common line. Something very difficult to do until GPS was invented.
Please update later on any progress. I’m from Michigan my whole life except my Army days but it’s always been home. I can see how each state though wishes Ron make sure they don’t lose even an inch of land to the other so this in the end could still end up in courts unless they work together and agree to agree on final findings. As a Michigander, I hope we gain a few more inches!!!! Hahahaha
Take a look at some of the state lines of states bordering the Mississippi River. Those are complex, given that the state line is the river and the river has shifted a lot over the years.
Year right! In Kentucky, the Mississippi has cut a piece of Kentucky off and Kentucky State Police have to leave Kentucky, travel a few miles out of state to get to " The Island" to patrol it! Crazy borders!
Growing up on the Indiana Michigan border I found a state line survey marker in the lawn I was mowing full a mile south of the current border. I’m sure it’s still there…
Did you cover the state line between Indiana & Michigan around lake Michigan ? If your interested i know where at least 1 the markers is located just south south bend & got pictures or can go get them ! It located just off U.S. 31 off the new bypass ! I'd even be interested if helping in my area !
I lived in Northern Indiana when the parts of the state in the Eastern time zone stayed on standard time while Michigan and Ohio went on daylight savings time. Therefore, for part of the year, you had to know which side of the border you were on to know what time it was.
Wow I'm 38 years old and I grew up in thew Detroit Michigan and I never knew about this very interesting. Great video this deserves a sub and a like, thanks for the knowledge.
Great video guys. You made a difference! You got somebody to recognize that appointments were made, so that meant somebody was getting paid to do a job they hadn't done! In Indiana there is no law that says an elected official has to report to work! Michigan lost some land that was given to Ohio too. That's how they got the UP.
I visit a friend that lives about 2 miles north of the Indiana, Michigan border right above Orland, IN. I visit about once a year. Border seems to be pretty set there.
Very Interesting. I grew up on Sterns Road in Bedford Township Mi. Very interesting topic. Naturally I assumed it was settled.😊 I geek out over stuff like this. I have seen a stone monument between Indiana and Illinois. I actually made it a walk from Indiana to into South Chicago where the monument stands, sadly not kept up. I did this during the lockdown in 2020 because no one really cared a couple of Hoosiers walking along the Lake Michigan Bike Path into Chicago. Your video really brought up a topic that I can press on my State officials. Bravo!

Hello fellow Michigander! I'm from Litchfield Michigan. Great video. Very interesting. I know that there is a south bound road called Ray Quincy. Is that a road to Ray? Best of all things to you and whoever reads this....
I grew up near the border and always had this thought. There are several "State Line Roads" that are no way straight and are at different latitudes. It's quite funny.
Reminds me of the time near the Ontario - Minnesota Border. One family had a homestead that each government claimed in their country. Finally it was settled and a representative of the U.S. Government visited the homestead and announced that the homestead was actually in the United States state of Minnesota. The owner of the homestead exclaimed, “Thank Goodness, I don’t think I could stand another Canadian Winter”.
I remember about 30 years ago a house burned down because it was in Virginia but they had to go through West Virginia to get to it so neither fire department would come because they wouldn't leave their state and the people couldn't sue because they were both volunteer fire departments
The exact location of any border can land in federal court if a homeowner gets tax bills from two states. Usually judges go by where the house is. In one case the house itself straddled the line so they went for the front door
Sometimes I think the wheels of gov't are square. Interesting stuff. Living just South of the Mason-Dixon line I would never have thought there would be such discrepancy on State borders.

@@janerkenbrack3373 very well stated.
Great video! I've always found it very funny that the Michigan-Indiana border is kind of loosey goosey and undefined while the Michigan-Ohio border is surveyed and marked down to the centimeter hahaha
I'm a proud Michigander and this is the first video I've seen from your channel but you've got a new subscriber now!
Thanks and welcome!
The Michigan - Ohio border has to be exact because they fought to see which state got stuck with Toledo.
@@ganggreen9012
I say Michigan won. Toledo trade for the U.P. is a steal.
The Scout camp we go to is just down the road.
Hey guys just wanted to let you know how happy I am that I found your channel. I am always learning new things about our state and seeing things I would never have seen in our state without your videos. I am 61 now and I wish I would have enjoyed learning new things this much back when I was in high school. Oh well better late than never. Keep the great videos coming.
Welcome aboard!
Interesting stuff! Thanks 😃
...and, now I learned something today. I always learn from you and Poppins.... peace and love...
And then there’s the joke that if a plane crashed on the Michigan/Indiana state line, where would they bury the survivors? Great video!
This is just brilliant. Thank you both for your incredible knowledge sharing!
LadyYoop! You are too kind!
@@RestlessViking Nope...you are too good!!
I remember when Wv, Pa and Md wanted to have that same discussion, then remembered who actually surveyed a lot of it... a certain Mr Washington... It is documented well, thankfully.
Good luck guys...
Personal care fragrance ? I vote for all to use Old Spice 😆🥴, Raised in Lenawee County; I now reside in Comal County Tx. 😉
Can you imagine if you’re home was on a border half the house in one state half the house in another, both states would want tax money from you. That would be horrible.
Road 5.50 the barn is built straddling the Ohio Michigan line.
I had a buddy in college who lived on the border of two countries! Split his house right down the middle.
Split property tax is common. You can get that from straddling town or county lines. In Escourt Station, Maine and Escourt Canada you can even get it from straddling an international border that runs through some of the houses.
From both states, and man I never knew this was a thing! Always found it peculiar how far apart the welcome signs are, but it makes sense now haha
I icw n south Bend born in Elkhart so have been near the border almost all mylife
You are right, this is far from the only border dispute in the country. It is far from the only one in the Great Lakes.
Easiest answer, conscription! To arms! To arms! Basketballs at 20 paces!
basketballs? found the Hoosier! 😄
@@zotfotpiq, we love basketball as much as we hate Ohio.
Dodgeball! Form your lines!
Based on the Pistons and UM, we better make it football at 20 paces.
@@giuliani3570 Yeah, I think we sacrificed the Pistons to the football gods to make the Lions relevant. 🤣🤣
A few years back NC and SC had a boundary commission, and I recall there were a few buildings that changed states.
Yeah. Didn't some family ended up like moving their house or something on a big truck?
@@TheMrPeteChannel we had a similar thing on the Belgian-Dutch border (the infamous situation around Baarle-Hertog/Nassau, a complicated mess with enclaves and even some counter enclaves within basically one town). They sorted it by deciding that the house got the nationality of where the front door was. A few clever people moved their door a few metres left or right, depending...
very intersting video! as an indiana resident i wonder about legalization of weed in michigan while still being criminalized in indiana. If you live on the border i could imagine some funny scenerios where you can smoke weed on your porch but if you walk a couple feet you can be arrested
YEP!!!!
Rode that train back in the 80's 3' gauge big oval maybe 3 miles of so long. They had a sign on each leg showing the border.
As long as nobody is adversely affected, I say we let it stand. I like the idea that we call all get along well enough not to worry too much about it.
If your considered Michigan and your actually in Indiana. Your taxes would be higher.
Governments need your taxes too much, not to worry about it. They aren't doing it for us, they're doing it for our money.
I'm a big map nerd. I enjoyed this very much. Now I want to do a tour of my county lines.
Blessed by the algorithm with this video. Great editing, very informative. Great stuf!
Great video! I really like how it was a casual, out walking vlog type video, but you cut out all the extra and got right to the point!
I appreciate that!
Thank you both.
I had been unaware of this issue.
Not to far from there is Camden MI. I drove a semi truck out of there for 3 years. Drove through RAY a lot! Thank you for the Restless Viking Education! Always enjoy it!!!!
Great video. I hope your channel takes off.
This is the reason that I love UA-cam. Two "ordinary" people (you two actually seem like pretty special people 😊) making great content. Very cool!
That is very kind of you to say. Thanks!
I live in LaGrange, IN, 10 minutes south from Sturgis, MI, and yeah it's confusing for a lot of the state line, good video
You'll probably enjoy reading about the Delaware Wedge. It's an interesting border anomaly between Pennsylvania, Maryland and Delaware.
Call up the Michigan Defense Force! We must secure Michigan’s southern border once more.
Now if it as to defend Michigan from encroachment by them foreigners from OHIO, then I’d join in a minute! Indiana? Don’t care… 😄
Build a wall.
@@common_c3ntshonestly all us great lake states should think about building a wall. I'm getting tired and grossed out by the way Arizona looks at them when they're out watering their rocks. 🙄
down here in the south our schools lie to us. they say we won that war. but who in their right mind would win a war and accept Toledo as punishment!?
(i kid. we love you toledo. go mudhens!)
Ohioans are pouring in through the open border.
The family and I are moving to Michigan next month and have really enjoyed your videos. Thanks for your content!
Welcome!
I've lived in Michigan all my life and I'll be honest, I never even realized that there was that little jog north where the three states meet. I just thought the border between Michigan and Ohio/Indiana was just a straight east/west line.
well done. thanks for the info, I always assumed there was some maddness there. Go blue!
Lot of fun to watch, and great couple. I hope this doesn’t start to obsess me.
I live in Edwardsburg MI that sits on the border. We also have the historic Sauk trail (US 12) Chicago road that goes through our town with alot of history tied to it. That might be a neat subjects to talk about 😊 thanks for your interesting content. I just subscribed. 😁
Love how the video ends with a body wash commercial. Hahahah.
This is interesting!
Growing up on the Indiana Michigan border I found a state line survey marker in the lawn I was mowing full a mile south of the current border. I’m sure it’s still there…
Probably actually a state road right of way marker.
I visited this triple point a few years ago. Nothing there, but interesting to visit!
I love near that spot and have been there many times. It's kinda cool being in 3 states at the same time.
As a local, being a land surveyor for a few months would be a blast
Agreed!
Did you cover the state line between Indiana & Michigan around lake Michigan ? If your interested i know where at least 1 the markers is located just south south bend & got pictures or can go get them ! It located just off U.S. 31 off the new bypass ! I'd even be interested if helping in my area !
You two are very wholesome! Loved this video.
As a resident of NE Indiana... this video is exactly what I needed to see.
Thanks for watching!!
Hello from Kansas 🇺🇲
Great video guys. You made a difference! You got somebody to recognize that appointments were made, so that meant somebody was getting paid to do a job they hadn't done!
In Indiana there is no law that says an elected official has to report to work!
Michigan lost some land that was given to Ohio too. That's how they got the UP.
I visit a friend that lives about 2 miles north of the Indiana, Michigan border right above Orland, IN. I visit about once a year. Border seems to be pretty set there.
Siurh Bwend is just 10 miles from Niles Michigan
Knowing where the border is must not be important.
Until it is.
Very Interesting. I grew up on Sterns Road in Bedford Township Mi. Because Dad had the mailbox on the south side of the road, we got our mail from Toledo Ohio, even though we were a mile and a half North of the Michigan Ohio border. Michigan driver's license with an Ohio address. Interesting challege getting in-state tuition at a Michigan University.
I lived south of Sterns in
(Bedford Twp.) Temperance.
Had a Michigan address.
Got Toledo water.
Billed from Atlanta.
Bravo!
Very cool.
We lease property that is pretty much on the tri-state lines, and we have been fighting because they say we need a deer license for each state to hunt
@3:13: Is that a Trimble GPS antenna flying from the building ... in case the border moves?!
LOL. That's a huge Trimble antenna. Maybe it is the mother Trimble.
Out near my neck of the woods. Hope you enjoyed it. Check out the Lost Nations State Game area next time youre out this way
I've hiked through Lost Nations on the NCT. A very cool area.
Im from tri -cities of Tennessee with our famous Bristol Tennessee and Bristol Virginia border right through the middle of Main Street.
beautiful city! went for business, and the plant mgr took me on a tour, and we went up Roan Mountain while the flowers were blooming... the beauty was otherworldly. I'll never forget it.
Yes, the scented are a big deal. My wife suffocats when someone comes into the room with a lot of perfume.
As a Michigander, I’ve always wanted to go to the tri-border area. Well, I’m good now I’ve seen it.
It's easy to tell where the border is between Michigan and Indiana. Just see which side has more potholes in their roads, that's the Michigan side. 😆
Can confirm!
Hello fellow Michigander! I'm from Litchfield Michigan. Great video. Very interesting. I know that there is a south bound road called Ray Quincy. Is that a road to Ray? Best of all things to you and whoever reads this....
The company that I worked for in past is in Posey County, but has a address for Vandenberg County.
Worked for someone on the board a year or two ago, real good guy, definitely not a bureaucrat, but held back by government
Check out little long lake! Splits indiana and michigan right down the middle, Have to have a fishing license for both states to fish the lake
I heard: "Before coming to the meeting, please allow yourself to ferment, post-rainbox, to allow for a more natural gathering". ???
I grew up near the border and always had this thought. There are several "State Line Roads" that are no way straight and are at different latitudes. It's quite funny.
Reminds me of the time near the Ontario - Minnesota Border. One family had a homestead that each government claimed in their country. Finally it was settled and a representative of the U.S. Government visited the homestead and announced that the homestead was actually in the United States state of Minnesota. The owner of the homestead exclaimed, “Thank Goodness, I don’t think I could stand another Canadian Winter”.
😂
Love your channel! I wish someone would do a similar one for Wisconsin.
We'll get over there soon for a video or two. We intended to do more of the other states in the Great Lakes.
Damn right we fought about it! I was hoping you would talk more about the Ohio/Michigan border. Interesting history there.
I remember about 30 years ago a house burned down because it was in Virginia but they had to go through West Virginia to get to it so neither fire department would come because they wouldn't leave their state and the people couldn't sue because they were both volunteer fire departments
Growing up on that border I can say one side of the border was just as cold and cloudy as the other side
Chesterton, In has a road called Indian Boundary Road that is on the old Northern boundary line before the border was moved.
I live in Michigan, Berrien County. I'm 5 miles north of the state line. Or is is it 5 miles and not 4.8 miles or 5.3 miles?
Live close to old state line in ohio lived in this area my whole life often wondered about the exact boarder in the tri state
