- It's called the "Old Indian Trail" and it stretches for 55 miles. The original trail dates back to 600 BCE.

We did the same thing, followed the markers, a number of years ago. We read an article in the Record Eagle about the trail.
Great fun. Marker 15 was missing in the Manistee River and some others were knocked down and in disrepair. Some were hard to find or missing. After we did the trail a boy scout redid the markers, remaking the trail.

I have lived and worked in Northern Michigan for over 20 years and drive by these markers all the time. I now know what they are thanks to you two!
One suggestion is to look at postcard collection in empire, Mi and other local museums to see what information they have.
I love this kind of stuff. Michigan history fascinates me. I worked in Traverse City for 17 years and have passed by that marker every day and never knew what it was for. Thank you so much for this. I continue to absolutely love your videos.

That trail runs along the edge of our farm and through a farm i rent near the Manistee river. My mom told me about these markers when i was a little fella, bout 45 years ago. Never made the trip you folks did, but i enjoyed it very much!!! Thank you! By the way, the bridge you crossed the Manistee , its on the states top 10 most dangerous bridges!!! HARVEY BRIDGE its called.
Haha! I had no idea about Harvey Bridge. It is almost famous with the state putting it on a top 10 list and being dangerous. 😂😂😆

I must have sped the distance between Cadillac and Traverse City a hundred times. For those who don’t know, it’s the last leg of a vacation or weekend run between “down-state” and TC heaven. So many times and yet I’ve never heard of these markers…maybe I need to slow down and ask more questions. Thanks Viking and Vikqueen!
I lived in michigan before moving to Charleston, my wife and I visit every year, we've seen these markers thought they were survey points. Thank you for this and all your postings we really enjoy them

Wow. Another My Kind Of Adventure! Grew up in the area and came across the TC area ones and for years thought they were old railway markers.
#14 and #27 were replaced.

Native Minnesotan here. Over the last few years, mostly due to reading books based in the UP by Steve Hamilton among others, I have had a growing interest in visiting Michigan. I think it's not all that different from Minnesota in a lot of ways and looks like would be fun to explore. Your videos are feeding this interest! Thanks for putting 'em out there.
By the way, is Poppins a last name? Just a guess.
Thanks for stopping by! Poppins was a name given to "Martha" as a radio call sign for an Expedition Team that Chuck used to run (his was "Pathfinder"). Poppins is absolutely a favorite of children, she seems to always have a never ending handbag, makes everything a fun lesson, empowers kids, etc. etc. . . hence her nickname. BTW - Chuck was born in Duluth.
Also from Minnesota. Love these videos and I agree I think Michigan is probably a lot like Minnesota. would like to visit the UP.

I have been a life- long Michigan resident,but did not know that about those markers ,maybe had seen them in my past when I traveled northern Michigan,but definitely gonna get up there hopefully to explore and find out the interesting things about this and the history behind them.thumbs up and thanks so much appreciated for the information on these markers.

I’m a lifelong Traverse City resident, I’ve seen the Old Indian Trail markers on the sides of roads my entire life but only recently learned what they stood for. Very interesting, and great vid!

Great video. I'm a Traverse City resident. I know boy scout who restored the markers. Restoring the markers was his Eagle Scout project. You can also see the PBS video about his project. I'm going to share your video with the scout.
Great video guys. Best one so far. Have you visited the Manitou Islands? Good content in the Glen Arbor/Empire area too. I used to own a small farm north of Honor where I sold my fruit/veg and art at the local farmers markets. My barber had a shop in Empire, he was all business in the summer months because of the tourists and cottagers, but off season his shop was a great place to learn the local history from a lot of local people who fished and farm the area. Back in April 2006 I went over to Empire to get my haircut and afterward I went out to walk the beach and I discovered a shipwreck. I never said anything about it, but someone called 9 & 10 News about it and they came out and did a story. In June, I went back for another haircut and when I walked out to where it had been, the lake had reclaimed it. From time to time it resurfaces and they believe they know who she was. Feel free to contact me, I would love to share some history about the area and I think you'd like to make a video from that area too.
Hello Brian, I (Da Viking) have visited the area often and Poppins has family in the area. I've actually kayaked to the Manitous back when the park service would panic at the thought, LOL. Very cool video! I have seen some of those markers up in that area and wondered what they were. Sounds like it would be a great day adventure to do! Plus there are some good backwwods camping spots up in that area!
👍 I've been swimming in the boardman river as a kid, on and off horseback. The horses liked it too, it was a hot day and a cold river. This was back in the previous millennium when winters had deep snow and -10F or lower days.

Great video! While you were traveling, did the facing orientation of the markers have any sort of consistency (eg, facing the marker points you towards the next one)? Or were they moreso facing people on the trail for visibility?
Mostly for visibility from the road, river, intersection, etc.
Being a Native of the area and doing my DNA. 16 was the meeting spot on their journey. But You don't need to know what the Natives were doing there.

The markers have a unique look! Did you find them all in one day?
Well. . . not quite. We made it to 26, then Poppins had a family thing in Leelanau. Ya know, drinks, hilarious uncles. . . spend an hour and a half the next day to finish them up. One could do it in a day.
Are these stones the originals that Miles Petosky Crosby placed?
I think only a couple were replaced since he placed them. However, I really don't know. Also, he only placed 1-14, I believe.

I would have to expect that "Indian Camp" area would have been chosen for its exceptional qualities such as well drained soil in case of rain, freedom from pesky insects, access to good water and other stuff.

Is there a method to the distance between the markers?
There doesn't seem to be any method for the distance, rather they are placed where there was something of historical significance.
I left the Grand Traverse Band because it is not a tribe, It is a Chicago-based company. I have 7 Chiefs of that tribe that are my Ancestors. But I have been banned by the tribe. Because as they said those unmarked graves of my people in the past. No need to give them a proper burial.
Do you want to do a tour of Michigan? Go to Garden Island. The United States' largest Native American Cemetery. Which is also the place where they buried the children from Holy Childhood Indian Boarding School.
3500 unmarked graves.
You will also find graves on the 4 surrounding Islands.
I've been to the Garden Island Burial Ground a few times. A sacred place. I've heard upwards of 5,000 umarked graves (depends who I talk to). I've never intended to do a video of that ground, it doesn't seem respectful. Each visit, we've brought an offering.

No disrespect just curious you said the 3rd marker was 2023-1200= 823 (your timeline 12:52 ) the year 823, how would we know what was going on in 823?
Archeological evidence at the site points to those activities. Site #3 did have a couple of digs back in the 30s and 50s I believe. Some of the history is provided by oral history passed down by the Three Fires people, though it is consider less reliable.
What did Poppins pickup off of the beach at 12:13 ?

It is a geocache.
The biggest crime was cutting all our trees down between 1850-1910. We cut down ALL of them. Very stupid.
It was old timers GPS
The number 33 is represented quite often in occult religions.. It is said that Jesus passed away at the age of 33 so they like to claim that number. One third (33 1/3) of the angels rebelled against the Most High. The markers are shaped like obelisks which originate from Egypt / Babylon and are found all over the place in old cemeteries marking free mace graves. It may be an old ley line / geomancy trail.
