+PSYCHO G -- Q :: -- Is Eddie "Will" Davis really your father?? - Eddie Davis certainly plays brilliantly in this concert, he is an absolute joy to listen to, as of course are all the other guys.... I checked some of Eddie's credentials, he has been playing trumpet for 30-odd years, and he has played with some really big-name artistes and bands...

R.I.P. to Wilton Felder... The Texas Twister. Such an inspiration to me to be a better saxman. He left so much music on his own.... both on sax and bass. A great loss. Rest In Paradise.

The members of both The Jazz Crusaders and all versions of this current Crusaders band are the best musicians playing jazz, blues, funk and soul on our small planet. Since the 60's in Houston, Joe, Wilton, Stix, Wayne and Larry with all of the best guys and girls playing the timeless great jazz music. God Bless all of the Crusaders here and in Heaven. Peace and Love.

To the families, relatives and friends of Joe Sample and George - great human beings and musicians - our heart-felt condolences and profoundest sympathy. May their Soul-Spirit rest in peace .Gone physically; forever here spiritually! (And to those of Horace Silver, a man of parallel temperament and musicianship.)

I was 14 years old in 1974 and bumped into these guys and absorbed the positive vibe with my whole heart. The Crusaders are a national treasure and just the very hardest working and the very best musicians. They pumped out so much quality art it is difficult to quantify. Icons of what it means to be a working musicians and how to create a meaningful impact on culture. Total OG's. They touched so many people and left a legacy of pure joy.

Enjoying this Live recording in Nov 2020 in the midst of Covid-19 when all Live music shows have been cancelled. This music feeds my soul! So grateful for the gift the Jazz Crusaders left behind. My prayers to all the musicians unable to perform live right now. May we Never take this experience for granted again.

A lot of my friends do not know their music. I was introduced to there music when I was in my senior year in high school 1964. I became a fan and followed their music picking up several of their work which I still have on vinyl. Rest in Peace Brothers Joe Sample, Wayne Henderson and Wilton Felder. THANK YOU FOR THAT FUNKY SOUND.

The band that turned me on to jazz fusion when I first heard “Street Life” in 79. Joe Sample, Wilton Felder, Wayne Henderson and Stix Hooper back in the day. Throw in Larry Carlton for good measure. Nancy Wilson was in her mid 70s when this concert was filmed, and she looks and sounds beautiful!

Wilton's tone was huge like Houston Pearson, Gene Ammons. Great player! He gave me a mouthpiece years ago when I use to visit his house I still have it, a "Berg Larsen"). The trumpet player, Eddie Davis, sounds a lot like Freddie Hubbard. And of course, Nancy Wilson is simply "MAGIC".

Jazz at its best and one of the best jazz ensemble ever. Love all their music but my favorites are Uh Huh, Keep that same old feeling, Inherit the Wind, and Street Lights w/ Randy Crawford . Met Stix Hooper's younger brother Sam Hooper in boot camp while serving in the Marine Corps back in 1967 and still good friends today. Thanks and a shout out to all you Jazz lovers out there whoever you may be !

Wilton is an almost unsung connoisseur sax master who knows his craft. His masculine sound is individualized with unique pathos and beauty. Ronny laws has adopted his sound, with a little soul and tactile restraint.Wilton played bass on Ronny's first (or second) album.

JazzKeyboardist1 Q: Which sax has a feminine sound?? -- Smartass answer: Any of them, if played by a female!! -- There are plenty of good female sax players out there, and here are just a few for starters: Candy Dulfer, Chika Asamoto, Jessy J, Saori Yano, Pamela Williams, Layla Angulo, Mindi Abair, Mihoko Abe, Kaori Kobayashi, Talita Summer ... and the band played on...... Here's a Question for you, dude: What's the difference between sax appeal and sex appeal??

Props to The Crusaders - they were at the forefront of smooth jazz mixing R&B w/jazz and funk w/their own form of “fusion”(for lack of a better term for the internet expert wankers out there!). I don’t think they ever sold out to the sappier sides of smooth jazz just to sell records - seems like they always kept it real!

All are respected while I have seen Joe Sample several times in a beautiful outdoor umm, shell or whatever, but a reflective way to direct the sound and not let the wind impact too much on the players just North of Cincinnati, Ohio USA. It is a long-time venue where anybody that is anyone's favorite comes during the year. A very busy place for good jazz. Of course being a boater, this venue is superb. I wish by closing my eyes and imagine if she was in my arms on a boat listening to some good jazz is would be heavenly. just one problem: no boat and lady yet!

There have been some very good 'acid jazz' bands keeping this genre alive. Obviously they don't have the same profile as these guys but their talent is excellent. try the James Taylor Quartet, and Dutch Band the Jazzinvaders for example. Mezzoforte are still going strong and you should definitely check them out as they come from a slightly newer generation than these guys and aren't in their dotage yet LOL. Obviously Jamiroquai, Brand New Heavies and Incognito also fly the flag. it is perhaps easy to dismiss these guys as 'johnny come lately' characters but don't assume they aren't as good as musicians because trust me, it isn't the case.

Thank you Wilton Felder for introducing me to some of the best music ever, Jazz! The real (Grown Folks Music), I was introduced to Jazz by a friend from Houston, the hometown of Crusaders. When I heard "We All Have A Star" I was hooked. I became a musical grown woman at 21. Thanks AL, for the introduction. " R.I.P Wilton Felder, Joe Sample, Wayne Henderson, and Bobby Womack and Randi Crawford for the madd vocal tracks for Inherit the Wind, (Bobby) Street Life (Randi Crawford), jam out in Heaven!

+msrubie11 --Please be cautious when posting obituaries of musicians, msrubie11.... -- Randy Crawford born in 1952 in Macon in the state of Georgia is now 64 years old and is still going strong, so please do not categorise Miss Randy Crawford in the same bracket as those good musicians who have deceased because it is not only un-factual and untruthful but rather ungracious as well.......besides which it is Randy, not Randi (sic)

tunefultony johnson Frist, let me say that I am very happy Randi Crawford is still with us and I truly apologized to her for my mistake. I typed in her information and it did show she was deceased. There are cites that do that and I should have double checked before posting. Again that is my mistake but that is what it was a mistake! Everyone is capable of making them. Ms. Crawford is a great Artist and have given us great music I am happy to hear that she is still going strong.
With that being said a mere "you made a mistake" and communicating Randi was still alive and well would have sufficed. Your condescending language, the authoritative manner with it's berating tone that you chose to use would have caused most adults to tell you where to go and how to get there. It is uncalled for and it show how you are use to communicating with those around you, with condescension and disrespect.
I have always enjoyed Randi, but this post nor my comment was about her. It was about Wilton Felder and the Crusaders. The fact is
the Crusaders were from Texas and they were my focus. I was not including Randi Crawford as one of the original Crusaders nor was I including Bobby Womack. They were only featured on certain songs as they were individual Artists with there own careers. I.E. why their name was to the side with the name of the tracks they were most known for with the Crusaders.
Third: There is a way to inform people that they have a fact wrong. You went beyond that and it became offensive. Whether you meant it to be or not remains to be seen. While I appreciate the information that she is still on earth and going strong as she is one hell of a singer. This post were about Felder and the Crusaders, the focus was on them, not Randi. Please do not post me in this manner again as I am as "Adult" as you and I may not be as nice the next time!

+msrubie11 - I am unconcerned as to whether you think I was rude to you.. I was merely pointing out the fact that Randy Crawford is still in the land of the living, and if somebody posted that I was dead when I was anything but dead, then I think I would be grossly offended..... AMEN..... Have a good day..... This video is one of the Crusaders' greatest live concerts, but Ricky Gillery takes the vocal part of Miss Randy Crawford on the song STREET LIFE.

Joe Sample, Wilton Felder and George Duke, surrealistically talented artists, had involuntarily departed from our physical Earth plane far too soon; but, fortunately enough for us, they did not before they bequeathed to us - musically asserting - a library of stellar magnificence.
Now, having ascended into the spiritual realm of profound quietude and tranquility, each will be greeted thus by Almighty God, with His angelic hosts: " This is My beloved (musical) son in whom I am well-pleased!".
May the Spirit-Soul of each artist be accorded infinite and perpetual Rest in the sacred and sanctified bosom of Providence which dwelleth in the celestial sphere.

Classically progressive and 'funkily' Smooth is the Jazz Crusaders. Rickie does an emotional interpretation of Street Life; I felt I was experiencing the ups-and-downs of street-life as she sang so soulfully and spiritually. Both Randy Crawford and Lalah Hathaway have done superbly as well. Joe Sample is -is- at his masterful best. He himself and George Duke are - yes! - are as skillful as the much- vaunted Amanda 'Chick' Corea and Herbie Hancock. Nancy Wilson brings to mind her musical 'off-springs' in the persons of Phyllis Hyman (RIP) and Anita Baker. An earlier Nancy Wilson herself reminisces Diana Washington. Displaying unselfish leadership, Wilton Felder, like Miles Davis, permits his men to showcase their individual abilities without dictatorial intrusion. Thus, the trumpeter does sing superfluously and well indeed. Wilton Felder is true Jazz, within or without a rhythmic jazz-context, a la Stanley Turrentine. Ernest Watts (tenor and alto saxes), Wilton Felder, Ed Calle, Bob Berg, Michael Breaker, Joe Levano, Joshua Redman (sp.), Gary Meeks and Brandon Fields are 'alumni' of John William Coltrane, the father of modern tenor saxophone-ship, so to say. After more than 30 years to date of this in vivo performance, the Band sounds futuristically fresh despite the absence of trombonist Fred Wesley. Many stars to the trumpeter whose name has eluded me. Thanks for posting!
