The penultimate BUCS league game in Southampton's 2018 season sees SUCC 1st XI host Exeter University 2nd XI at the lovely St Cross ground in Winchester. Southampton feature Sanderstead CC's James Allen as captain, and Jake Fish batting at No. 4.
Both teams were full of quality players, many of whom have played various levels of representative cricket as colts, and currently play top class league cricket for their clubs. The game didn't disappoint as momentum swung one way then the other leading to another thrilling finale and a surprise victory! Enjoy.....
Apologies for slight wind noises (not that sort!) in the early part of this film - I’m getting a “micromuff” for Saturday so hopefully such noises won’t happen again!

Hi from New Zealand. I enjoy watching your coverage - AND your tongue-in-cheek comments! :) Hope you don't mind some observations on things that I've observed. As an MCC [NCA] qualified Coach, ex-County player and capped player for the Club Cricket Conference for 5 years, with a career run tally over 15 years at senior level of 27,000+ runs, Average of just over 42 in all levels, 500 catches [1st slip] and 300+ wickets, I'd like to make a few suggestions. Batsmen should practice playing a 'good' ball by trying to play [albeit defensively] into gaps in the field. That will yield many singles and occasional 2's. Play THROUGH the line of straightish balls, not across it. 1st slip - most stand too wide of the keeper and snicks go for 4 instead of being caught or stopped. If the keeper moves towards the leg side, FOLLOW HIM. Crouch before the ball is bowled with hands on the ground - it's much quicker and easier to take a catch coming up rather than jabbing down. [Even with head high chances]. Keepers, when waiting for a throw from the outfield, stand BEHIND the stumps. It's easier for runouts and encourages fielders to try to carry their throws all the way to the top of the bails. I hope that you find these tips useful. NZ has just thrashed India in the second successive Test Match! Great stuff.
