Welcome to our documentary on the BMW iX xDrive50. We're calling it a documentary because at 31 minutes in length this is the longest video review we've ever produced for our channel.
However, this is one of the most interesting cars that we've ever tested, and so we felt we had to do it justice.
Our video guy Ciro De Siena was fortunate to spend 4 weeks with the car over the holiday season and so this is a long-term test of sorts. In this video we discuss the all-important aspects of range and charging your electric vehicle in South Africa, as well as what it's like to live with an electric car in South Africa.
We also take a very detailed look at the BMW iX's interior and a walk around of all the external elements of the car, including those oversized grills, the self-healing paint, the unique door handles and the flip up BMW badge on the nose.

I was the guy with the pitchfork against electric cars - YOU'VE CHANGED MY MIND. We just need to fix that load shedding issue. Imagine calling into work - "Eish sorry I'm gonna be a little bit late.The car didn't charge last night.SHED HAPPENS"
I had load shedding at home last night for 2 hours. The reality is with a wallbox (currently free with the purchase) you can charge this car from absolute zero to 100% in under ten hours. So as long as you get say, 6 to 8 hours of electricity per night, you will be fine. Also, I genuinely only charged this car twice in 4 weeks, the range is amazing.
Your guys work deserves to be on prime time TV. Outrageously good youtube videos. From Camera work, to directing, to the host knowing his stuff and being genuinely likeable and interesting. You guys are the best. Keep up the epic work.

Managed to drive an iX myself. What a machine. You can sense BMW threw everything into the car to make it their electric flag bearer.
I loved the adaptive regeneration after the third day. It even sees red and green lights. So it freewheels on green. Its mad.

The way i stated I falling for ev's recently, the more reviews I see the more it becomes a no-brainer getting one. Nice review by the way quite in-depth
At first I did not like the styling, but having seen it in the flesh, it looks stunning. And I love that it looks nothing like a normal BMW and its "out there" with its styling.

The BMW IconicSounds was composed by the legendary music composer Hans Zimmer. Also, you cannot open the front bonnet at all (there are no buttons for it).

The second set of rear lights are due to a quirk in US law. The rear lights must be on a fixed part of the vehicle according to US law. But because the designer wanted to put the rear lights on the boot lid, they had to put a second set of brake lights inside the boot lid on the body of the vehicle to satisfy the legal requirement for fixed rear lights whenever the hatch is opened and the main rear lights are not visible.
Yeah and that sucks, they could have just put lower fog lights and use these as a second pair of lights when the trunk is open. Like what Audi does.
Didn't Audi also do this on the A1?

Would I buy a IX? You bet I would and there is no doubt BMW have smashed Tesla in there efforts to produce such an outstanding EV.
look at the sale numbers, BMW mismanaged their EV project
@@Gecmajster123456 it was more that Tesla as a new start up company beat all the major manufacturers in not only introducing the first EV’s but leading EV technology.
It’s a catch up game now but the major manufacturers are bringing to market some attractive and in some cases far better EV’s than Tesla. It will not be long before VW, Mercedes and BMW catch up and take over in the sale numbers!
A very entertaining and informative review. However, there was no mention of driving aids; lane control, parking aids, camera views to front, rear and around and any other tech.

I think it looks pretty great. BMW get a hard time for their designs, and they don't always get it right, but I've got no problem with this one. New type of car, new look, very distinctive. I'd love to own one.

Watching this after a year and buying a iX xdrive40. Charging at this SMG BMW in century city is no longer free for anybody. Also, great review and the car really does look great in the video. This is kinda my perfect family car if you have a bunch of kids.

I am a current i3 driver. Been driving electric now for 3 years and I won't go back to ICE. As a daily driver, it is so much better than an ICE vehicle. I would likely have bought this, it is an awesome vehicle. I however preordered the Volvo P8 Recharge and I think it will likely arrive soon (TM)

Having driven the car the last two weeks, I can say everything you say is true. It’s hard to put it in words, but I have never driven anything that is close to it when it comes to refinement. When I had to go back to my 3 series I had similar feelings when I had to drive a VW Polo (compared to the 3 Series)
Autobahn consumption (120-140 km/h) was about 26 kWh/100 in in german winter (-3 C). City consumption 22kwh

Good point, Ciro forgot to mention that oddly, the front bonnet on the iX does not open. We're going to try find out why
Picking up my ix50 on Friday. Wasn’t looking for this option, but comes w bronze titanium trim including a bronze colored front grill. Wife thinks it looks a bit over the top and ghetto but it works for me.

Yes it seems that these so called "Legacy Auto Makers" is actually still alive...
Last year the EQS series from MB was a big surprise, Volvo and Polestar looking very interesting with the new concept cars, VW/Skoda/Porche is doing really well, the Stellantis group is selling high numbers in Europe, and the Hyundai brand including Kia and Genesis, is maybee the EV leaders in new ideas and developing.
About interior, take a look at almost everything from Genesis, if you like driving cars.

The dream would be a EV that costs between R300 000 and R350 000, has a range of 500 km, seat 4 to 5 people comfortably and equipped with just the necessary luxuries and safety features.

Yeah it always goes through this process, the top vehicle makers make a product and then the tech is taken by inexpensive vehicle makers and that is when some of us get involved
But isn't that too much too ask for for that amount? You are talking about "Comfort" and "luxuries" and "safety" for under R350k? It's a bit of a stretch guys... I mean I get where you are going but I think you may be a bit more reasonable. It's hard to find all that even in an ICE powered car for that amount.
What a great car, I love the direction BMW is taking especially for it's designs. A little bit adventurous but I applaud them for not playing it safe and with that, their cars have presence especially to the normal people who see cars as objects to move them from point A to B.
Unfortunately I think the move to a fully electric car in South Africa (for obvious reasons) is not practical. I would love to see more developments on their Plug in Hybrid SUVs to be exciting close to this.
