With all the success Falcom has been having with Ys and LoH recently globally, I really wish they would go back and revive similarly Popful Mail and Sorcerian with new entries or remakes. Even Xanadu got a recent rival of sorts.

OMG! I was literally smiling through everything on this list. Finally, 13 Sentinel Aegis Rim finds some love! This has been my absolute favorite this year, second only to VC4!!
I find it odd it hasn't received much love given how good it is. My only complaints would be that it ended too quickly (or it felt like that to me) and left me wanting more and I would have loved if the battles were a bit more graphical. But I have to agree, it's one of the best RPGs I've played in quite a while.
Falcom taking the top 2 spots. Not bad for a small indie developer. Also shout outs to Dragon Quest. I've only recently gotten into Trails but Ys and Dragon Quest are my two favorite game series of all time. I've been obsessed with them for almost 30 years now, lol.
Falcom deserve all the love and more. Pretty much just got into them too and already am a fanboy. I couldn't get into Trails while playing (too much X spamming) but I watched it instead and been enjoying it. Ys on the other hand is incredibly fun and challenging to play. Now I'm just waiting for Tokyo Xanadu to go on sale to get that too.
I must heavily disagree about DQ Heroes. It has good battle system, yes, but it has some of the worst baby sitting in any Musou style game I ever played (the only one above it is OG Hyrule Warriors). The second one is better since it barely has baby sitting, but still suffers from long and boring grind.
Man, my friend likes musou series. His fav is DW, and grinds characters in Warriors Orochi 4 Ultimate to the max level and collect the best weapons. I can't understand obsession like that. I like Hyrule Warriors on New 3DS though.
Mine is the opposite of yours..but trails series and persona 5 easily gain my attention (both are my best favorite jrpg) and the sole reason for getting a ps😍
Great list! My Top 10: 1. Nier Automata (game of my life) 2. Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana 3. Persona 5 4. Valkyria Chronicles 4 5. Tales of Vesperia Definitive Edition 6. Ys Origin 7. Dragon Quest XI 8. Tales of Berseria 9. Tokyo Xanadu Ex+ 10. Kingdom Hearts III
Im playing the shit out of Yakuza: Like A Dragon the game is just straight fire! Also i put over 200 hours in P5R what an amazing game i could never get sick of the soundtrack!
My biggest issue in persona 5 is when they go to Hawaii and they say waikiki is to clean. What fucking universe is this!? It's fucking filthy! I work here so don't tell me shit otherwise lol
I just wast thinking about getting valkyria chronicles 4 for the switch. this kind of game I feel more enkoyable on portables. I got hooked with the second on psp before playing the first one ps3
13 sentinels needs more love worldwide. It's a story telling master class in science fiction fucking beautiful game. I'm really just here cause I wanted to see Nier Automata and 13 Sentinels. I expected Nier...of course.. fuck it's my favourite game. But I'm stoked to see 13 Sentinels. Great job man!
must have been tough, while maybe not the best, the ps4 is an amazing system for rpgs, both indie and mainstream. 75%, at least, of my ps4 library is rpgs, and i should know, my folders are arranged by genre and the rpg tag is at least double of all the others, and even a few other games have rpg elements like symphony of the night.
This is definitely a crazy list lol. Some of it doesn't sit well with me (Not really that bad, but still) but the top game? The top game is probably one of my favorite games of all time, now. CSIII and IV truly are an experience that i will never forget so long as i live.
I know this list is based on your opinion but it's a little sad not seeing Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3, Code Vein is good but we all know the source material of that game.
I liked Code Vein and got the platinum trophy experiencing all endings with both English and Japanese voice acting, it was a emotional and action packed game. Character creation was extremely good just wish they allowed me to switch genders on my new game+ modes. Could have started a new character but would have lost all the cool gifts and weapons. I liked spending time talking to everyone really liked each character. What I didn't like so much was how the boss fights copied alot from Dark Souls and Bloodborne it kind of didn't feel right, would have been alot better if they designed their boss characters away from all of that, would have been more fun. Code Vein should have stayed away from that hopefully Code Vein 2 comes out differently.
Code Vein has horrible level design and tons of ganks to create an illusion of difficulty. It's a worse Soulslike than God Eater is a Monster Hunter type game. God Eater is actually good, just obviously not MH level. Code Vein is a mediocre Soulslike in comparison.
I have been playing Valkyria Chronicles 1 and 4 this year. It's even on my UA-cam Uploads. I like Valkyria 4 over the first since it's much easier and a step up. The Tales and Star Ocean Series tend to be difficult when it comes to crafting.
i really need to finish episode 2 so i can play 3 and 4... i beat 1 and then immediately downloaded and played 2, but playing 1.5 of them back to back was a little too much so i had to take a break then again, i also binged the entire atelier dusk trilogy, so go figure
Yeeees. I love/have played all of these games! They're so good! They dont get as much love as they should either, especially trails and valkyria chronicles
I've been wanting this list for so long. So many of my favorite games are here. Persona 5 is my favorite game ever with nier automata being 2nd. Dragon quest 11 and code vein are up there too. I also started tales of beraeria, but quit about 10 hours in to play code vein, persona 5 royal, and ghost if tsushima. Once I finish Ghost I'll go back to berseria for sure. I have yet to to play Ys8, but I tried the demo and wasnt a huge fan. I've also been wanting to play trails of cold steel but havent had the time to start a huge series like that
Glad to see someone like ys8 ovwr nier for a change. Also Im getting convinced that Legend of heroes is a JRPG series that really hits it off with people who like reading books, and that people who DONT like reading have a hsrd time enjoying it as much
Ironically the only reason i got into jrpgs was because i was into reading to begin with. I used to never play them at all, and likely would've stopped playing games completely, until my bro convinced me to pick up Tales of Symphonia at the local Hollywood Video (while video rental stores were a thing) and at first i was hesitant because i also had that (in hindsight stupid) belief that jrpgs/anime style looked too childish but decided to give it a try in the end and Symphonia easily became my favorite game of all time. As for why: it was easily the best story i ever played in a game up to that point (before that i mainly played Nintendo games or shooters and the only jrpg i honestly played at the time was Pokemon which was, and still is, lackluster when it comes to story) and the opinion i had of the game was basically: "it felt like i was playing a book" and since i loved reading i instantly got into the genre. Also helped that Smash Bros was one of my favorite games at the time and Tales combat (at the time anyway, before they added arte trees) was very similar in button inputs for artes to Smash's specials. But ya Trails takes the whole book feeling to a whole other level compared to the majority of jrpgs out there with it's world building and development...hell the fact they actually change npc dialogue and even have npc dialogue from past games become relevant in later games (some starting as far back as Sky 1 and being referenced by a random npc in CS2) showing a degree of world building almost no other dev team matches (and i know how many times they change npc dialogue cause i go out of my way to go back to each and every npc in the game every time the story progresses/the time of the in game day changes from say morning to afternoon or night to see how the dialogue changes...some even change after doing side quests to reflect dialogue from the side quest as well...all of this adds so much more play time than what most people would normally see...in CS3 i beat the game in 175 hours or so and of those 175 hours i'd say about 50 to 60 of them are just from me talking to npcs, about 5 to 10 for leaving the game on while doing something else for a few minutes multiple times during my playthrough and then the rest from the actual story, reading books, and side quests. Today alone i played about 5 to 6 hours and of that time i'd say about 3 hours were just from me walking around the city i'm in talking to every single npc and then finishing up the one side quest for this part lol).
jesus fkng christ, 30% of the ppl commenting here need to really, REALLY, check what a freaking JRPG is... throwing fknggg souls game in the list for fkng real people.... but that happens because you added Code and Nier on the list, not technically JRPGS Erick... love the content but DQ Heroes, Nier and Code are NOT traditional jrpgs
@@chairkun9139 Just like with Vesperia it adds tons of extremely small details over time and I can't see how each of those tiny additions can be utilized to my benefit.
@@thelegendaryzoltan9628 you are right but to me berseria's gameplay is a little worse haha, it was just a button smasher, no technique or strategy, but after all berseria o vesperia are good at least i liked both

For me it's between nier automata and ff7r as being the best on the system. Ff7r is probably so high due to the nostalgia and amazing combat, I never really got used to niers combat but the story and characters made me cry and eventually buy the damn book lol. 7 made me cry too for certain characters but it wasn't as deep
Pretty weak generation for jrpgs. My favourites this generation were Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Atelier Ryza, Octopath Traveler and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (and it's Torna DLC). I also really enjoyed going back to Trials of Mana. If you were to look at various lists on the web, a lot of the best ps4 jrpgs consist of ports and remakes, which is a bad sign for a weak generation when older games are better than new ones. Ironically, some of the "best" jrpgs this generation, like persona 5 and dragon quest xi, I could not get into for one reason or another. Persona 5's time-based activities were really stressful - really made me feel like I had to play optimally and not accidently do things I did not want to do - I'd prefer something more chill. Really didn't care for this dating/relationship sim and time-based mechanics at all. Dragon Quest XI was just overly long and repetitive. It needed to end in half of the time. I didn't finish it. I was like 30 hours in, and by the completion times of other players, I didn't want to subject myself to 30+ hours of more torture. I don't think my experience would have changed or got better with 30 more hours to be honest. I just got really tired of looking for items in cabinets and pots in town, and doing this over and over. The story structure was repetitive. The combat was just incredibly boring and the exploring the environments just did not feel interesting at all. The sound track was awful, and very repetitive. The game just felt long, bland, unengaging and tedious. I really don't understand how this game got so much praise.
These are the best JRPGs I've played so far, not in order and not only in PS4: 1. Persona 3, 4, and 5. 2. Tales of Berseria and Vesperia 3. Code Vein 4. Nier Gestalt, Replicant and Automata 5. Valkyria Chronicles 1 and 4 6. Dragon Quest XI 7. Ys VIII Lacrimosa of Dana 8. Lost Sphear and I am Setsuna 9. LoH Trails in the Sky 1, 2, 3 and Cold Steel series. 10. Disgaea 1 and 2 since I haven't played 3 and 4, I haven't finished 5 yet. I would put Tokyo Xanadu and Akiba Beat but I stopped playing them and haven't picked up yet. I'm excited for Tales of Arise and Granblue Fantasy Relink.
demon waifu.. I mean Code vein got on here? I thought people shat on it due to some.. stupid things they did. One being too long dungeons, reused dungeons (wait.. so did diablo 3. and I thought it was okay still) and of course, twitter hating on it because Animu bewbs.
I didn't care much for Ys 8. I asked for suggestions on Reddit and this one came up a lot. I got it on sale and thought it was fun until I started to understand the plot. The game lost my attention in Chapter 2 after saving Kathrine. I haven't touched it since.
Came out on the same time with the ps3 version. By that logic DQ Heroes and Tales of Berseria are disqualified too (which we didn't get the PS3 version of them in the west)
@@chairkun9139 i played persona 5 first(i loved it)then i played kiseki from Sky FC and beyond(i loved it more) I'm dying to play hajimari and kuro now
uhm... I don't question taste (if u like Dragon Quest what can we do? ;) ) but I argue that 13 Sentinels and Dragon Quest Heroes are not proper JRPGs ... then 13 sentinels u are right, it is great I loved it! If this was my list I would definitely take out both Dragon Quest titles (which I personally find mediocre) and splash in Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Nioh... and anyway Zanki Zero (Zanki is a masterpiece - I am sure u did not play it otherwise it would be here, get ur hands on it before it becomes super expensive, you'll love it!). Neptunia VII also fantastic!
But overall if we look back at Tokyo Xanadu, Digimon, Labyrinth of Refrain, Grand Kingdom.. even maybe Yakuza?... Sakura Wars, Blue Reflection and Dark Rose Valkyrie that were quite ok... I mean this was quite a generation wasn't it? Even better than ps3.
*Sees list* Call me old-fashioned, maybe... but a good part of those aren't jRPGs for me. Dragon quest heroes is a musou Nier Automata and Code-Vein are action games. 13 sentinels is more of a visual novel than anything else (seriously, the battle phases are more of an annoying mini-game than anything)
Id agree with you. I was surprised about Nier and Code, they are definitely Action RPGs with anime style, NOT jrpgs... 13 sentinels.... well thats arguable since lots of jrpgs has other subgenres blended on them so its grey there
I really do think Suikoden is a great series, but the way trails weaved a story across 9 games has been such a delight that I don't think i'll ever have it be topped. If it keeps it up in to the future, the finale will probably steal my heart right out of my chest :D.

@Michael Lochlann this is just my personal opinion but I thought the story was the best part of berseria I thought the character development velvet has is great and the ending legitimately made me cry then again I never had a ps4 so I could only experience it through playthroughs on UA-cam but hey that's just what I think
Man, I need to get my hands on these Trails games, they must be that amazing. I keep hearing about them.
With all the success Falcom has been having with Ys and LoH recently globally, I really wish they would go back and revive similarly Popful Mail and Sorcerian with new entries or remakes. Even Xanadu got a recent rival of sorts.
did you here they made either a remake of Ys 1 or made a Ys origin game? i just saw the title as i was looking through some stuff but didn't have time to look into it deeper.
HO, I didn't expect you to put Cold Steel at the first place, but damn, Falcom really deserves more praise.
I’m loving Tales of Berseria. I got it on Black Friday, along with Ys: The Oath in Felghana. Is Adol still a silent protagonist in Ys VIII?
I think he say 1 line at the end lol
Shin Megami Tensei V will be the best jrpg of all time !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😈👹💀👻
One More God Rejected, YHVH I BLESS U
My favorites
1. Persona 5
2. Yakuza 0
3. Yakuza 6
4. Valkyria Chronicles 4
5. Trails of Cold Steel 3.
Haven't played Yakuza 7 (Like a Dragon), Cold Steel 4, and Nier Automata and Dragon Quest 11 yet.
I noticed you are definitely not a Squaresoft guy, Eric. :)
Love the vids, but please lower the intro volume
What, I can’t hear you?
@@waltersobchak7275 Did you say something?
@@fractodacto what
Dude I like Code Vein, but how the hell is it above Nier Automata lmfao. There needs to be elabaration on this opinion. Appreciate the vid though Erick, just thought that was wild to feel that stongly about Code Vein, so Id genuinely would want to hear more about what makes it so special for you
1)trailer of cold steel 3&4
2)tales of berseria
3)Tokyo xanadu ex+
4)Kingdom hearts 3
5)star Ocean the last Hope hd
I must heavily disagree about DQ Heroes. It has good battle system, yes, but it has some of the worst baby sitting in any Musou style game I ever played (the only one above it is OG Hyrule Warriors). The second one is better since it barely has baby sitting, but still suffers from long and boring grind.
Man, my friend likes musou series. His fav is DW, and grinds characters in Warriors Orochi 4 Ultimate to the max level and collect the best weapons. I can't understand obsession like that. I like Hyrule Warriors on New 3DS though.
Valkyria chronicles 4 is really good and persona 5 is hard not to love
I love the list! Personally, Persona 5 is my favorite, but the Trails series is a close 2nd.
Mine is the opposite of yours..but trails series and persona 5 easily gain my attention (both are my best favorite jrpg) and the sole reason for getting a ps😍
My is Persona, second Trails and third Ys :)
How come nino kuni never appears in your videos? The first one, now remasteted for the ps4, is just art...
Fuch yeah 13 Sentinels is one of the best
Great list!
My Top 10:
1. Nier Automata (game of my life)
2. Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana
3. Persona 5
4. Valkyria Chronicles 4
5. Tales of Vesperia Definitive Edition
6. Ys Origin
7. Dragon Quest XI
8. Tales of Berseria
9. Tokyo Xanadu Ex+
10. Kingdom Hearts III
Kiseki games are the best jrpgs I have ever played.
@Michael Lochlann yeah old ff games especially 7 or 8 are amazing but new ones are worse.
code vein would be great if it wasnt to close linked to awful dark souls, really hate that combat, slow, boring, 99% time dodging
10:43 Wait, that's Persona 5 Royal, not Persona 5 lol.
Im playing the shit out of Yakuza: Like A Dragon the game is just straight fire! Also i put over 200 hours in P5R what an amazing game i could never get sick of the soundtrack!
I'm a shape shifter, at Poe's masquerade... I literally just left the character standing still just to listen to the song
I'm just happy P5 is on here
must have been tough, while maybe not the best, the ps4 is an amazing system for rpgs, both indie and mainstream. 75%, at least, of my ps4 library is rpgs, and i should know, my folders are arranged by genre and the rpg tag is at least double of all the others, and even a few other games have rpg elements like symphony of the night.
I just got a DQ 11 S ad after you finished talking about DQ in your video, what a coincidence :v
#1 Persona 5
#2 Atelier Ryza
To each its own of course but DQ Heroes and Code Vein but no Yakuza 7?
Yakuza is out on March 2 on PS4... that's why
@@marc-ap4699 Yakuza has been released on November 10 on PS4, March 2 is on PS5...
This is definitely a crazy list lol. Some of it doesn't sit well with me (Not really that bad, but still) but the top game? The top game is probably one of my favorite games of all time, now. CSIII and IV truly are an experience that i will never forget so long as i live.
Thank god someone else likes code vein. Other than the slow walk in the memories it was pretty amazing in my eyes
Those were amazing. So much story and lore placed beautifully in front of you.
I played the demo on spare time. Then the next day I went out to buy it. Loved it
I know this list is based on your opinion but it's a little sad not seeing Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3, Code Vein is good but we all know the source material of that game.
Great list nearly played them all but on switch.
I love DQ but I absolutely hate when they mute the main character >_> MC that doesnt show emotion or speak makes emotional scenes weird
Persona 5 love it very unique
Nier
Tales of berseria
Now playing disgaea series
I have been playing Valkyria Chronicles 1 and 4 this year. It's even on my UA-cam Uploads. I like Valkyria 4 over the first since it's much easier and a step up.
The Tales and Star Ocean Series tend to be difficult when it comes to crafting.
Love the music selection for the Trails games, Erick! Steel Barier is such an underrated masterpiece!
For the best experience.
Play Tales of Berseria FIRST, then play Tales of Zestiria.
You will get why when you play them in that order.
They don't get a lot of love, but I really enjoy the Sword Art Online games.
I have all the sword art games has been released haven't finished any of them yet cuz I haven't had time
@Brian Revas I mean I haven't beat fate bullet yet but the other sword art games do take a little while to get into like they're very long
SAO Hollow Realization was a very fun and solid game IMO, assuming u skip the story.
@@ReversedJrpgs I got a little far in that game I haven't Beat It
The only sao game that is good is android integral factor..the rest is trash for me :((
i really need to finish episode 2 so i can play 3 and 4... i beat 1 and then immediately downloaded and played 2, but playing 1.5 of them back to back was a little too much so i had to take a break
then again, i also binged the entire atelier dusk trilogy, so go figure
Gotta watch for spoilers... there was one for Nier Automata that would have significantly changed the impact for me.
Stopped watching after the first game showed
Dragon quest heroes is not a jrpg it's a mousu
Its a dynasty warriors theme game
I've also been wanting to play trails of cold steel but havent had the time to start a huge series like that
I played Ys VIII like 6 times on different consoles, platinumed it twice, and I still get a desire to pick it up again once in a while.
I have Berseria. But man. I can't fully understand the battle system.
The battle system is a mess
@@chairkun9139 Just like with Vesperia it adds tons of extremely small details over time and I can't see how each of those tiny additions can be utilized to my benefit.
@@thelegendaryzoltan9628 you are right but to me berseria's gameplay is a little worse haha, it was just a button smasher, no technique or strategy, but after all berseria o vesperia are good at least i liked both
13 Sentinels Aegis Rim is truly a master piece and deserves to be placed upon the best sci-fi stories ever created, even with Asimov's books.
I bought Valkyria Chronicles 4 day one, installed it yet.... I never actually played it. I wonder why, I loved VC1 I bought it on PS3 and later on PS4 but somehow I just couldnt not get myself to play it.
These are the best JRPGs I've played so far, not in order and not only in PS4:
1. Persona 3, 4, and 5.
2. Tales of Berseria and Vesperia
3. Code Vein
4. Nier Gestalt, Replicant and Automata
5. Valkyria Chronicles 1 and 4
6. Dragon Quest XI
7. Ys VIII Lacrimosa of Dana
8. Lost Sphear and I am Setsuna
G'won Eric you absolute sick lad
I love hearing my song set to Eternal Sonata gameplay. Nice choice.
Even tho it's a 2 year old video, I think your number 1 and 2 are still correct now. With Like a Dragon and Persona 5 Royal close up there.
Hmmmmm. Maybe a separate honorable mentions video? Good job on this one!
Some video ideas for you (not quite sure if you've done them already). Best romances in JRPGs, and oldest characters in JRPGs.
demon waifu.. I mean Code vein got on here? I thought people shat on it due to some.. stupid things they did. One being too long dungeons, reused dungeons (wait.. so did diablo 3. and I thought it was okay still) and of course, twitter hating on it because Animu bewbs.
I can respect your list but dissagree with about 40% of it. Your number 1 choice, Trails was a good pick.
Makes pedantic point about the correct pronunciation of "automata".
Proceeds to butcher the pronunciation of "harbinger".
I didn't care much for Ys 8. I asked for suggestions on Reddit and this one came up a lot. I got it on sale and thought it was fun until I started to understand the plot. The game lost my attention in Chapter 2 after saving Kathrine. I haven't touched it since.
Persona 5 is technically a ps3 port
Came out on the same time with the ps3 version. By that logic DQ Heroes and Tales of Berseria are disqualified too (which we didn't get the PS3 version of them in the west)
I really should stop playing dota1. but 6.83 techies is just too... good.
Well trails series is not games for falcom newcomer. I prefer to anyone who interest to falcom games, try YS VIII.

Dragon Quest Heroes 2 > 1. Does just about everything better and the port is better too.
Code vein is definitely the worst game if you’re impatient 😅
Really wish Vanillaware would port their games to pc
Atlus has a really amazing game with 13 Sentinels, but Atlus seems to be only focused on Persona 5, Persona 5, Persona 5.
Vanillaware not atlus
So in order to play Trails of Cold Steel 3, I have to play the first 2 right?
Yeah, and you should probably get caught up on the story in the previous arcs: ua-cam.com/video/0n7VjgvTE-I/v-deo.html
*Sees list*
Call me old-fashioned, maybe... but a good part of those aren't jRPGs for me.
Dragon quest heroes is a musou
Nier Automata and Code-Vein are action games.
13 sentinels is more of a visual novel than anything else (seriously, the battle phases are more of an annoying mini-game than anything)
Id agree with you. I was surprised about Nier and Code, they are definitely Action RPGs with anime style, NOT jrpgs... 13 sentinels.... well thats arguable since lots of jrpgs has other subgenres blended on them so its grey there
Amazing as always, Erick!
You surely are in love with Cold Steel 4. Maybe it's because it reminds you of Suikoden series a bit?
I really do think Suikoden is a great series, but the way trails weaved a story across 9 games has been such a delight that I don't think i'll ever have it be topped. If it keeps it up in to the future, the finale will probably steal my heart right out of my chest :D.
@@narius_jaden215 I know. It Is difficult to make 9 games good/awesome games of the SAME WORLD AND TIMELINE, each connected to the other. Also LONG JRPGs, they are +30 hours just of story content.
@Michael Lochlann Funny to say that I have already finished Hajimari no Kiseki.
Guys, i need help. I am a JRPG fan, and i love most of the games on the list, but Trails of Cold Steel.. I dont know, i remember playing it on the ps3 and i didn't like it. But i want to like it, so can you guys tell me why I should play it? Or why it's better than persona 5?
i will not say it better than Persona 5 though this list just erick opinions. if you don't like cold steel you probably don't like the 3/4 games too.
3 games that are on my top 10 worst games ever and 3 on my top 10 best games ever are in this list lol nice one
if those games are top jprg in ps4 i wont buy ps4
