Quest Link and AirLink Graphics Looked Horrible with My AMD Radeon GPU Until I Did This!

  • If you appreciate the work I do here on the channel and would like to help me create more content like this, Super Thanks is a great way to help out. It allows me to purchase new GPU's, games and other things I need; making these videos possible. Thanks! 😁
Over the past couple years it's become very apparent to me that Meta has spent much more time optimizing their software with Nvidia GPUs than it has with AMD GPUs when it comes to playing PC VR games with their headsets. When using Quest Link and AirLink with Nvidia GPUs it's more or less plug and play and the graphics look great; where as if you have an AMD GPU the encode resolution is much lower by default making PC VR with the Quest, Quest 2 and Quest 3 look much worse than it should. In this video I show how to use the Oculus Debug Tool to enable a very important feature when it comes to getting the best graphics possible when using Quest Link and AirLink called Link Sharpening. I also show how to increase the Encode Resolution Width from Meta's laughably low default encode resolution to improve the visuals even more. But that's not all; recently I ran into a new problem where the encode bitrate would randomly fluctate up and down making PC VR graphics look horrible even with Link Sharpening enabled and the Encode Resolution Width set significantly higher than Metas default! I spent the better part of a week investigating this bitrate problem and found a solution just in time for the bitrate problem to disappear all on it's own. I debated removing this particular information from my video, but that would have required me to redo a large portion of the video, and on top of that I thought, what if this issue comes back? And what if someone else is experiencing a low encode bitrate issue when using AirLink and this information could help them? So rather than scrap hours and hours worth of work I decided to keep it in. This is all explained in the new intro to the video which I had to film after the video was more or less complete. Anyway, for anyone with an AMD 6000 or 7000 series GPU who's using a Quest headset for PC VR and you're sick of the graphics looking like you need to get your eyes checked, the Oculus Debug Tool (aka ODT) settings I share in this video just might be what saves your PC VR experience. Also, toward the end of this video I show how to deal with another problem I've found which seems to only exist on Radeon 7000 GPUs when using AirLink. In all my testing it has never shown up when using a Link cable. When using AirLink with a Radeon 7000 GPU there's a weird warping or squeezing effect that goes on, on the far right of your field of view. It's very offputting and can be a little nausea inducing. The good news is there is a way to temporarily eliminate this nuesance and in this video I share a couple ways I've found to get rid of it. Ok, there we go. I've written the video description that no one is ever going to read but will hopefully help those looking for a solution to these issues find this video when they search for it. Enjoy! :)

I'm using a Rift S and it's been great with my 7800xt. With a tiny bit of tuning It's awesome. I think a dedicated PCVR headset is kind of where it's at with AMD GPUs right now. Which doesn't bother me but I know a lot of people are really into the Airlink/wireless thing.

Cheers. I have a different set of issues with airlink and link on my Quest 2 with a 6600 XT, 5800X3D system. Mostly awful aliasing resulting in awful "jaggies" and shimmering along the edges of objects (the window borders have jaggies that look like something from the '80s). Also occasional stutter.
I'll try your settings anyway, see if there's a noticeable difference.
No issues with Virtual Desktop except for strange colours and contrast compared to my desktop settings. I've also had intermittent issues with Oculus set as the default for OpenXR instead of Steam (as in setting it to Oculus would prevent some titles in Steam from running).
Sadly, despite the bang for buck advantages in terms of raster performance, I've had a lot more issues getting VR working properly with the Radeon than my prior Geforce card. That's without even looking at products like the Varjo Aero or DPVR E4 which flat out state they are incompatible with Radeon cards.
AMD doesn't seem to prioritise VR (small market I guess) and VR companies like Meta, Varjo, DPVR just don't seem to prioritise AMD (also due to market share I imagine).

As a laptop user i have always had trouble getting quality resolution using airlink and even a cable. I did not understand why for the longest time. I have a spec'd out rig that has me playing cyber punk in 4k after all with min 80 fps. Then I found out that my only my onboard amd card was compatible with oculus software but not my 3070 Ti! I switched to virtual desktop and never looked back. I average 10-15 Latency and can chose ultra settings in almost every game. Meta needs to expand or they will fall behind.

I don't know if this will help anyone with a amd gpu. But I think there's one setting in the Oculus debug tool. When I was trying to enable h2.65 in the video codec setting. I was experiencing a weird tearing issue on my right eye in the headset. But then when I turned off sliced encoding. that issue entirely went away and never came back. I was thinking that was the same issue that some people were experiencing on AMD cards and was wondering if that could probably fix it. For me when I went back to h2.64 with sliced encoding off both of them had no micro stutter anymore after I turned it off. But I want to see if that could be the fix for anyone on a amd gpu. If it doesn't then man oculus needs to fix their app

Could you "PLEASE" do a video on the proper setup of the Quest 2 with an AMD GPU. I've been playing in VR for years now but never tinker, DCS, MSFS etc look good but not great. As soon as it runs smooth, I stop fiddling with settings. But there freaking settings all over the place, OpenXR, Oculus App, Oculus Tray Tool, Virtual Desktop, Game Settings, AMD Adrenalin Settings, which apps need to be open when playing in VR? It is sooooo overwhelming.

How does one get the 7800xt working with quest link or airlink? I receive a "GPU not supported" error, and it looks like the 7000 series isn't on Meta's compatibility matrix. I'm using virtual desktop currently to play PC games in the meantime (no ethernet, so performance is meh).

With my 6950xt and quest 3 I just use 250mbit fixed within the Oculus tray tool. 1.4x resolution in the Oculus Software. Within the quest I set the Bitrate to dynamic and slide it to the max which is 200. In the performance overlay my Bitrate is shown as a graph like if u set it variable but it's always at 250mbit. When the wlan connection is bad for some reasons, then the dynamic kicks in and lowers the Bitrate uner the 250mbit but that never happens when I stay near my router. Graphic looks good and the latency is around 40ms

  • @MooshPaw
    @MooshPaw 6 місяців тому +4

I will say I did some research and testing on the Oculus software and I just find it weird how it works compared to virtual desktop
First with what you know, encode resolution is always lower than app resolution, which made me wonder if there's even a point on increasing the resolution past the native Oculus display specs
    2. On the exact same tab you can see your encode framerate, for the life of me I could not get this to stay at 120, it always hovers around 90, which is why I felt virtual desktop so much smoother, virtual desktop also seems to give you the full resolution you set your graphics settings to rather than Oculus
    3. I find bitrate on virtual desktop kinda weird, on Oculus I never really noticed a difference unless it was set to a very low value, however on virtual desktop your latency increases quite noticeably if your bitrate is above 60-80 (at least with a 1060, maybe newer GPUs have more headroom), I also found that h.265 tends to have higher latency that h.264, but on interesting ways, for example, if both encoders are set to 60 bitrate, both have a 30ms latency (example) under same conditions, but h.265 tends to spike to 35 or 40ms, if we put h.264 at its absolute minimum, you can get down to 20ms (quality is horrible though), and maxed out to 150 bitrate, h.264 still manages to stay on the low 30s where as h.265 tends to go to 40-45

I'm not sure I fully understand your question. Are you trying to use Quest Link/AirLink using hand tracking only, i.e. without controllers? As far as I know, hand tracking only works with the Quests native menus and in specific hand tracking games. I'm pretty sure you have to use controllers for Quest Link. The hands you see at 3:48 is just the representation the Rift interface displays of the controllers. I was using controllers when doing all the VR stuff in this video.

As a matter of fact, yes. I'm working on a video for it right now. The funny thing is, in the last week or so, he tells me he's working on a more aestheticallty pleasing version. 😅 As he's done in the past, there's a basic/light weight model and then a "cool looking" model. Both will perform the same it's just one will look more like a gun and be a little heavier. Don't know much about the "cool looking" Quest 3 stock yet, but the light weight model is very unique and as always performs spectacularly. Fal isn't happy unless performance is perfect and as I've been doing testing of my own, it's evident how much time and effort he's put in to get tracking perfect and make the stock as effortless as possible to use.

I recently upgraded to a quest 3 and when I try using quest link cable (official oculus cable) when I jump into quest link I can see that the refresh rate is obviously not 90hz it looks more like 30-40hz, when enabling the debug tool's performance graph I can see that I'm getting a solid 90 frames and have plenty of gpu headroom, I've tried switching the video codec from h264 to h265 yet the problem persists, the only work around was using virtual desktop but I'm far from my router so playing games like pavlov and contractors gets a bit annoying when my connection gets interrupted leading to delay/lag not to mention the decrease in quality

@@zipppiz Great card but not £560 great.
Meanwhile the 7800xt is better and £475 ( I'm hearing that the Quest issues have been fixed as well)
Unfortunately for me, I have a 650W PSU so if I chose to get the AMD, I might have to get a new PSU as well making it about the same price.
Hoping for greater deals on Friday.

The only way to fix this is if Gabe Newell releases the Valve Deckard.

My RX7800XT is getting awesome, giving me 4070TI performance on MSFS2020, it surely needs a lot of tweaking because neither Asobo nor Meta are willing to fix its issues with AMD. But after tweaking and testing I finally getting the performance I wanted on this sim.

Yet all the non-tech savvy normies will blame AMD when it meta. Started digging into this myself when I saw the channel ‘Cid from VRChat’ dumping all over AMD while as people (myself included) using non-meta headsets like the index, reverb, and vive had no major issues.
I was running on a wx7100 with zero issues at one point… that’s comparable to a 480… yet people are saying newer 6000 and 7000 series cards bad and unable to handle VR.
Makes me wonder if this bias is some shady corporate warfare against AMD cause I just don’t see a company as big as meta-messing up like that on accident. Either way it obviously hurts. AMD’s reputation as only dedicated gamers like yourself would dig into this matter.

I use the old rift s with my 7800xt. I'm grabbing a quest 3 and hopefully I can test it before upgrading to the 7900 xt. Either way it's got problems on the rift. Ghosting on all usb ports and nothing I have done fixes it. I forced my ram to the lowest latency possible and slowly clocked it up rather than using xmp. I tried lowering my dpc latency as much as possible. Went back to 10 cuz 11 is amazing at destroying frametimes. I also used an external hub for powering my usb. Still rough performance. But yeah meta is not optimizing for recent amd gpu's yet. But many things arent 7000 series compatible. I might just grab a 6900 xt rather. Gotta sell my 7800 xt first tho.,

Airlink and Meta's software simply sucks. I have a 4090 and ONLY use VirtualDesktop because I still have issues with their software. If you have an AMD GPU you should definitely deal with VirtualDesktop and not even bother with Meta's side.

Totally agree, I have some problems with my 3060 6GB laptop. Oculus linking via Airlink or cable is terrible. The computer reported missing Vram as soon as I opened HL Alyx. Meanwhile, the connection via Virtual Desktop is very stable.
