- Join us as we take a look at our most recent impulsive auction buy, a 1977 Mini 1275 GT.
What started as a walkaround of our new purchase quickly developed into a 'will it start?' video, with all the usual banter and mishaps you will have come to expect from us!
As a young lad, Elton worked in a garage where one of the mechanics had a tuned black Mini 1275GT. To him, that car was the coolest thing he'd ever seen and the memory stuck, so when a similar car appeared for sale locally 40-years later, he had to bid on it.
This particular Mini has all the period home-made modifications you'd expect of a car of this era, including a Panasonic stereo complete with Pye speakers and, get this, a 'Gran Pree' steering wheel. Honestly. Oh, and the carpentry is worth a look. Genuinely, we love it.
Don't miss the little surprise Claire finds under the seat cover. And no, it's not a spider this week...
Having been taken off the road in 1989, this 1275GT was bound to have a few issues. The bodywork is obvious for all to see, but what about the engine? Could we get it started before the dreaded school run? You don't get jeopardy like that on the TV 😂
We hope you enjoy this video as much as we enjoyed making it and would love to hear what you think in the comments section.

elton and clare, you are entitled to a life, we look forward to your videos whenever they come out
Thank you. We do enjoy making them, when they don't feel pressured. We *think* we're learning when and how to produce them in a way that makes us happy and provides entertainment for those who want to watch them. It's all a learning process and you guys have been magnificent in helping us.
That will make a lovely car! I had one exactly the same. It used to fly but was as rotten as a pear!!
Leaving out the rotor arm .. leaving out a plug .....not plugging the fuel pipe .... priceless
Now you know why I never became a mechanic 😂
Used to take the rotor arm out when parking in Nottingham for a night out in the eighties - then flatten the battery trying to start it after a few beers !!! Happy days !
Great to see you back in action guys, wishing Claire a speedy recovery, keep up the great work you do 👍
Nice purchase Elton, these are getting quite rare so it’s good that you have saved another one. Oh Claire sorry you were not well but glad you’re better now.
Do you remember the og run flat tyres from Dunlop. They were specifically made for the 1275mini and ran adverts in the 70’s and 80’s. They were called Denovo.
Did all 1275GT Minis come with the Tudor Webasto sunroofs, we brought a mini just like that, black but no stripes, but white alloys and the SUNROOF, with a tinted window visor.
I know of the name, but I do need to do some research on them, as they’ve been mentioned quite a lot in the comments.
They are still in Birmingham in the 00’s but I don’t know if they’re still in there? But had one in a maxi, family car, and it was lilac … ie purple ronnie colour?
Great to see you back guys
Thank you. We're happy to be back, too. We've missed you!
Great to see you making more films that was really good light-hearted just keep them coming hope you get better soon and stay safe
Thank you so much Michael for your comment. We’ll try our best, hope you have a lovely weekend. - Claire
Wishing you a speedy full recovery. ❤
Thank you Steven 🙏
Marvellous to see you both back on air. I did wonder why we hadn't heard from you in a while, and I'm rapt that Claire is up and about again. You have my sympathies - I only had pneumonia in one lung (and I too have asthma), but never got a ride in an ambulance for it. In fact, on doctor's orders, I drove myself to hospital (in my then-fiancé's car as mine was down with something of it's own). Took me about 2-3 weeks to be able to walk further than 50 feet without puffing....so I can certainly understand why complications have you in and out of hospital and not your usual energetic and effervescent self for a while. Here's hoping it keeps getting better and better for you.
Wow! A little 1275GT, eh? I remember the first time I saw one in our little village. The NZMC sales yard was at the top of the road that our street ended at, so about 1.5 miles from our house. We used to see the new cars being test-driven down Wellington St and past the end of our road and as my primary school was half-way along Wellington St toward the yard, I saw a few on my way there and back each day.
One sunny day in 1978, a little Roman Bronze Mini came down the road and I stood there staring at it because it didn't look like the others at all. Ok, it was a Clubman, but it was different because the paint was metallic.....with some real neat gold stripes and great looking wheels to boot! It wasn't just a Mini, it was a MINI to me.... I'd just seen my first 1275GT. The bloke who had test-driven it must have loved the car as well, because it used to turn into our street each day at about the time I was waiting to cross the road to our driveway. By this stage, the Mini was also sporting a set of Lucas LR8s atop the bumper and just looked - and sounded - spectacular.
I too have always wanted a 1275GT. I've owned three round-nosed Minis (and I still have one of them) and they've been fun, but I still want a 1275GT! I've thought about "making" one, but it's just not the same. They're asking a premium for them down here in NZ though, so I don't think it's going to happen any time soon unless I sell my Stag! However, the one I bought would HAVE to be that Roman Bronze colour with the original wheel trims on the 12" steel wheels....and I've got a set of period correct Hella 181s that I could use instead of the Lucas LR8s....or maybe I should use the Hella 160s....? Nah - maybe I'll just bite the bullet and get a set of Lucas LR8s and fulfil the dream in totality!
Again - great to see you both again and glad you're on the mend, Claire. All the best.
Thank you so much. Your comments are always really enjoyable. That pneumonia is horrible. Claire has just started coming on short walks again this week with the dogs. It’s taken her that long just to build her strength back up.
The 1275GT is such a great looking Mini and I totally get why you’d want one that takes you back, too! Classic cars are more about nostalgia than performance for most of us. 😀
I had a 1275GT mini in my youth. Pale blue with Dunlop Denovo run flat tyres. A friend sprayed the backs and installed a pair of Cibie 10DE driving lights as well.
Simply loved it, so many great memories. Thank you for posting.
Cibie lights!.........
I was two when this car started its life!😊😊
What an old beauty. Brings back lots of happy memories seeing one of these. I always preferred the Clubman front ended Minis. Mine definitely didn't have that centre console!
Thank you for commenting. I agree, I’ve always preferred the Clubman front 👍 - Claire
glad to see you both back .... and glad Clair is feeling better!
Thank you so much ❤️
Amazing how you find my previous life cars. Had the A35 then a bit later the MG 1300 then this. Love it ❤️
You obviously have fantastic taste Steve 😉 Thank you so much for watching and commenting; much appreciated👍 - Claire
What a fantastic find!! I absolutely love 1275GT Clubman's I had a 1978 GT in 1987, in fact it was my first Mini and my First car, best of luck with the restoration on this truly wonderful iconic Mini, good to see you both back and glad Clair is feeling much better.
I bet it's going to be a keeper. I would not get rid. love any classic Mini, Looks very solid considering
I think you maybe right 😉 thank you so much for watching and commenting. Much appreciated- Claire
Welcome back. I'm glad you're feeling better Claire.
That's a great little Mini.
Thank you Clive it’s been pretty rotten but filming really cheered me up this week. Thank you so much for watching
Fab car, fab video and so great to see you back x
Thank you so much for watching and your lovely comment Simon; much appreciated 😀 - Claire
can't beat the old engines points and condenser great video
Another fab video, thank you! Gosh though, Claire! I'm really sorry to hear about your illness. I hope you're making a full recovery and feel much better soon. I likewise, had a trip in an ambulance to hospital 5 weeks ago as I suffered a bleed on the brain (I'm "only" 53!!). So you have my full sympathy! Looking forward to the next video.......no rush, we'll be here whenever you're ready 🙂
Thank you Paul for your lovely comment. Sorry to hear that you have had a similar experience, that must have been awful. How are you doing now? - Claire
@@UKBarnFinds thank you, Claire, I really appreciate the reply. I'm getting there, just lots of nasty headaches. But watching your videos is good medicine 🙂
Nice motor, Elton... tremendous effort getting her running....
Good to see you up and about Claire... I had a proper bad flu last year...
Thanks for the video, when and as you can is fine with me...
👍🙏🇳🇿😊
Thank you for your lovely comment Glenn Sorry to hear you had the lurgy too, bloody awful isn’t it. We have something very exciting coming up so hopefully it won’t be too long till we are uploading another video 😀 - Claire
Love the fact you save good old classic Austin’s ….. still some of the best cars ever made …. Keep safe n well
Sorry to hear you've had pneumonia Clare, glad your on the road to recovery. t will take longer than you think to get back to full strength, so take the time to fully recover, we need you back on all cylinders running. Take care and see you next time. From rural W Berks.
The more I see & hear about new cars, the more I like the older stuff...you can work on, modify, enjoy, and are more visceral to enjoy. I have a D4 Audi Quattro, and it is nice, but I have a car from '69 & one from '76 and they are more engaging in many ways. Liking this from North Carolina
First year with the 12" wheels, bigger brakes, and a few other differences. Very nice!
Incredible thing is, the brakes seem to work. We're going to change/refurb everything in that department, obviously, but it's amazing that there's still a working brake system! The clutch is a story for another day... 😂
Glad your better, health is more important, great little car ,brill video.
Just brilliant, well done
Thank you so much 🙏
Great motor! Nice couple too 👍
Thank you. That’s really kind of you.
Very cool old clubman! Good to see you both back at it! Very glad you're up and about and well again Claire. My brother has just come off the back of a bout of pneumonia too!
Also glad it's not just me that does stupid stuff like forgetting to put a rotor arm back in the dizzy, then wonder why the car won't start!!😊
Hope you're brother is well on the road to recovery. We've heard so many stories of other people with this recently. Even if you are relatively healthy to begin with, it would take a lot out of you.
The rotor arm bit was so funny. For a moment, I was thinking "Oh no, we're in for the long haul here" 😂
Excellent video again from you both . Glad you’re on the mend Claire. Elton keep buying anything A Series. Great content
Thank you so much Derek, I have a feeling that may not be the last a series engined car we buy 😉 best wishes - Claire
From being so poorly Claire, do take it easy the next few weeks because although you might be feeling better, you do not want to have a relapse, because of over doing it!
She's overdone it this week, to be honest. I'm hoping a bit of R&R this weekend will help her.
Great watch I had a mini with a metro turbo engine back in the day keep up the good work
That was a swap I used to hear of quite a lot. I bet it went like a bat out of hell!
@UKBarnFinds yeah it went like hell and 1 piece exhaust just with a cherrybomb back box
I absolutely LOVE a Cherry Bomb! I keep meaning to buy one and fit it to something, just for fun!
such a funny video! howling here!!
It was a fun few hours. Glad you're enjoying it, too 😄
What a fantastic find on UA-cam, you guys are awesome keep up the good work from a new subscriber ❤😊look after yourselves x
Just watch right through. So sorry you not been well Clare , never great to get pneumonia. Take care. Elton! You seen a rota arm anywhere🤣
Love you guys. So look forward to see your projects.
A big thank you. Looking forward to part 2, 3 , 4
All the best Rob D 😊😊😊
Good to hear from you, Rob. Hope you’re keeping well. Are you going to Rustival 2?
@@UKBarnFinds Hi. Ohhh yes.
Just put it in my diary. Be honest had no idea it was on.
I will be there ! Hopefully you both will be. With the Mini ? 🙏
I’m over in Suffolk end of the month.
Keep well and safe!!!! Petrol 😫😊
Good video. Great to see you back.
Thank you so much, really glad you enjoyed the video 😀 - Claire
Laughed at the rotor arm! Chased my tail round a few times bitd doing the same thing 😂
Hi Elton and Claire glad to see you again Claire to hear you are feeling better now look after yourself nice to hear the mini start glad you sorted the petrol problem out good luck with the rest of the car
Thank you. Looking forward to chipping away at the jobs on this one, when we can make time.
Great car, great video and I'm glad that claire is making a good recovery 👍
Thank you so much.
Good to see you're on the mend. I've worked on mini's many years ago, CV joints are a pain.
We've all done it, but shows how easy it is to make schoolboy mistakes when rushing. As someone who owns a modified 1968 MG1300 (the ADO16 one), I really like the 1275GT.
That sounds like a nice car you have there 😍 Schoolboy errors are quite funny, which is why we like to leave them in the video. I’m glad that others have said that they do similar, though, as I don’t feel quite so useless 😂
I had one of these back in 85! We cut the bloody roof off the thing and drove it about!
A nice car with loads of potential, the engine surprised me as I was expecting it to be really tappety, I passed my driving test in my grandma's mini after only 5 lessons and I love mini's.
Yeah, that engine sounded sweet. I wasn’t sure if the mics would pick it up. When you think about it, though, it probably hasn’t done many miles. The car is showing 82k miles and you’d think the replacement would have been fairly recent.
@@UKBarnFinds it's a silver seal engine which is a direct British Leyland replacement and I agree with you that it has not many miles on it, another surprise for me was the original wheels with the hub caps as you don't see that type much, I've subscribed to your channel and I'm looking forward to seeing the minis progress.
Growing up in the UK in the 70’s, I remember how popular the black and gold combination was. I think it was the F1 John Player Special car that helped. Love the rims on that mini. An expat watching in Florida.
Clarke and Simpson substantially underestimated the guide price. It’s nice that it stayed locally👍🏻
Thank you and yes they did, I wish Elton got it for the guide price 😂😂 Thank you so much for watching and commenting; much appreciated - Claire
Keep well both! bloody backs and lungs hey!! take care!!
Awesome to see a local car I’m in Great Yarmouth would love to be able to take a walk around and look at all of the beautiful cars you have found
If you get a chance, please come to Woolpit Steam. We hope to take a couple of cars there.
What a find! I have a funny feeling this may have been my Dad's first company car... I would have been 10 in 1977 and totally loved it. It would have been registered to Russell Steward & Co. 5 Tombland, Norwich, NR3 1HH
Hi to you both glad Claire is feeling better really enjoy watching the channel its the only car related program my wife will sit and watch keep up the good work and take care
Thank you, that’s a real compliment. 😃
welcome back guys and glad your on the mend clair and take it easy, super cool find, mini gt one of my fave cars like elton i also had a triumph sprint but the sub frame went on it,great content and looking forward to the next one
Thank you. We will get a Dolomite Sprint one day! We’re going to have a clear out of some cars this year, so we can have a bit of space back (and money!).
IIRC the Mini Clubman front was designed by Roy Haynes (who had previously designed the Ford Cortina Mk.II). Issigonis is said to have hated it, but that may be more to do with him being sidelined than anything to do with aesthetics. Personally, I like the original and the Clubman.
Many thanks for your comment Roy and for watching. I had no idea Issigonis disliked the clubman front. I agree with you in that I like the original and the clubman, I do however prefer the clubman more, maybe it’s because I don’t see so many of those about and they do look a bit more racey to me- Claire
Just stumbled across your channel today. Great viewing. Will definitely be watching your older videos. Keep up the good work ❤
Thank you 🙏 so glad you found us 😄 - Claire
Hi you two - good to see you. I don't know if anyone else has told you but 'VG' is a Norwich registration whereas 'VF' denotes Norfolk.
A great little find!
Mini's are all that matters and 70's Minis are the icing on the cake.
Agreed 👍
Had one back in the early eighties except mine was a 78 on a "S" plate. Black with a webasto roof. Was a great car. Went all over the country in it following Hot Rod racing. Only sold it to help purchase my first house.
Watching from Ireland here ……Good to have a new video up 👏👏. Really like the “warts and all” approach 🙂 . Be great to see next vids on the 1275 .. keep it up 👍…..
Thank you. We'll definitely come back to it at some point, but the next couple of months are going to be extremely busy....but in a good way 😊
Great to see you well
Thank you David 😀
A mate had a 1275GT in that colour scheme in the mid 1980s. Rare spec
been there ..... done that re leaving the rotor arm out! lol
Brilliant! Loads of people have, but only a few of us will admit to it 😂
Brilliant mini guys
Thank you 🙏
I had a mustard yellow one of them. In the 80's i loved it 😊.
I actually still have the steering wheel. It's a long story. Aha.
Very envious. I'm sure you can work your magic. Looking forward to more content.
Brilliant! Well done, keep up the good work..
You seem like such nice people and very genuine. So pleased to hear that Claire is on the mend, it must have been a difficult time but you two are upbeat as always. Entertaining as always 😊✨
Glad to hear your on the mend Claire just take it easy, also that's a fantastic little project Elton has got there and looking forward to seeing the next episode 👍🏻
Glad to see you both back, and hope you continue to recover Claire.
A mint one of these in my top 5 cars to own.
Sorry to hear that you've been ill Claire. It's good to see you back though. The 1275GT was a highly underrated cat. No, it wasn't a Cooper but was still a great model. Out of all the (many) cars I've owned over the centuries, my 1275GT was the one that gave me the most fun. Great addition to the fleet.
Thank you for your lovely comment and for watching much appreciated. I’m well and truly on the mend just need to make sure I don’t overdo it for a bit. I have a feeling the GT will be a permanent member of the fleet 😉 - Claire
Me too, could leave Capri's behind on country roads !
Well done guys looking forward to the next installment of the 1275
Who doesn't love a 1275 GT... rate as a rare thing. I remember when I had my 1000 City, one of my mates had the exact same car. Great times all 10 of us travelling to Stamford Hall for.the mini rally.
Glad to see you back , love the content
Yes it great to see you I had to minis
From across the big pond. Great job on the Mini. Be safe and Cheers. Peace
I had T reg in 1985 for my 1st car when I passed my test. In black with the grey & black stripe interior, it had the same sunroof too. I had more fun in that car than anything else I’ve ever had. That’s a fantastic find you have there.
Great little 1275 gt, had one back in the 70's. Like you said, those A series engines are so good and so simple.
A new subscriber here, love the style and honest of your content and the obvious warmth between you both. Looking forward to more in due course but remember - health comes first.
Great video. I owned a bronze (Reynard colour I think) S reg 1275GT back in the early 1980’s. My favourite car of all time. Oh the fun I had in that. I cannot believe that I traded it in for a much newer 1 litre Austin Metro! So so dull by comparison. Well, I was only 23 and not very bright! Good luck fixing up your motor.
Great video guys, sorry to hear that you were sick Clare and happy that you have recovered. Enjoyed watching. 👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you ❤️
Had a mini. New in 1964. The video took me back to how much fun it was to drive. Like the way you mend the barn finds
Thak you. We try to get things running, but it's often "two steps backwards, one forwards". This Mini was very well behaved, though.
Just found your channel and your doing also my favourite car of my youth too Elton, would love to own one ow as a project car. Looking forward to more on this and your other vehicles.
Great video ❤ takes me back to my youth! Take care 👌👌🥰🥰🥰😎😎😎😎
Thanks for the Video, just subscribed, born 66 I enjoyed my 80s and 90s cars, some of the old stuff just keeps on going !
Good to have you on board. We love that era of cars, too. We've also featured older stuff here and hearing people's memories of them is fantastic. I wonder if people will be talking about Teslas in the same way 40 years from now?
Nice to see you on the mend Claire. I hope you are feeling a lot better soon.
Loved this video - great to see a 1275GT resurrected. One of my favourite minis.
Thank you. It’s a fantastic little car. It’s now running from its own tank. Even the alternator works fine. There isn’t a massive amount of work to do on it, other than go through the brakes and everything perishable.
Good to see you both back doing your thing and that Claire is better. Looking forward to seeing more videos whenever you get them posted. Take care. Cheers
Thank you. We should have a bit more content coming soon, but I do need to make sure Claire doesn't overdo it.
Really enjoyed your video, brought back soooo many memories …
Cheers
Glenn
Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for watching 🙏
So good to see you well again, Claire, happy days !
Thank you 🙏 Glad to be back, hope all is very well with you ❤️ - Claire
That one will have had the 69-77 three spoke 'dumper truck' steering wheel with a leather rim - they changed in later '77 for the 'boomerang' wheel that arrived with the stripey seat trim and reversing lights in the rear lamps. Unfortunately the three spoke wheel and its centre badge are very rare and an unspeakable price. A Momo Prototipo looks perfect however.
Silver Seal engines were BL remanufactured - not quite the Gold Seal but not far off. They were popular 30-40 years ago.
Thank you. I did see a steering wheel on eBay and, yeah, it wasn’t cheap!
Yay you're back. great little car I ove these. So glad you are feeling better Claire
Thank you. That was a rough few weeks, but onwards and upwards now. Hope to see you at Rustival 2 ❤️
Wonderful little Mini!🥰
Brilliant to see you both back, hope you are recovering well Claire 👌
Thank you Dan 🙏 so glad you like the mini. I am recovering well thank you although I do need to remind myself to take it easy. To be honest I’ve overdone it a bit this week so I am going to have an easy weekend 😄 - Claire
@@UKBarnFinds
Ah that’s wonderful to hear you are on the mend!🥰
Have an awesome weekend! 👌
I look forward to future video’s on the Mini for sure
Awesome car m8 proper jealous of this lil pocket rocket 😊 also the steering column lowering bracket n all
Lovely to see you both back. It’s a Mini 😏🙃🤣
Great video. I bought a new 1275GT back in 1979, yep I’m old.
It was Vermillion (Bright Red) with Gold 1275 Stripes. The seats were grey striped. Your seats look like those from a Clubman.
Mine came with Denovo Tyres, which I promptly changed for 12 inch Wolfrace wheels.
It was a great car, the only downside was I once lost out in a straight line race with a Reliant Robin Van.
I need to hide that last paragraph. It’s not a good selling point 😂
Interesting comment about the seats. We need to do some digging there. Thank you.
Another brilliant video that's going to make a nice car and with it being a genuine 1275gt it will fetch a few quid when you sell it.
When I passed my driving test, if not before I always wanted one of these, I remember they used to have bull bars, but they got banned . I did get myself a 1275 eventually, but in the mini Metro MG turbo . you’ve got your work cut out, putting this one right 👍☺️
If I ever came into money, this is exactly what I would be doing to fill my time, saving classics and helping them live on.
Loved this don't change a thing!!
Thank you 😊
We'll see you when we see you. Great video. 👍
Hahahahaha. You made my day. The amount of times that I have done that. Hi from New Zealand. Just a few ciggy packets and a bit of bog and she'll be as good as new !!
Old school....I like it! "cardboard and filler" was the order of the day back then 😂
Had a red/orange one GCP264W those dunlop denovo tyres were mega expensive back then. Great car.
