British-mechanic ..... absolutely not. The training is all day based, typically 9 to 5 at the training school with the specific modules: Core skills (3 weeks), breathing apparatus (2 weeks), HAZMAT (1 week), road traffic collisions (1 week), with several weekend courses on first aid and trauma care thrown in for good measure. The fire service understands that recruits have other work commitments, so the training modules are spaced out over, say, a year, so they do not run one after the other. Firefighters then go operational at their local station, but for the next three years undergo further "on the job" training in what is known as "on station development" before they can call themselves a fully qualified retained firefighter.
Do you have to spend time away from home (weeks at a time) when training to be retained? I live close to a local fire service training centre
