A tip for speaking about books- maybe try taking a small amount of notes as you're reading and once you've finished with specific details of your thoughts? I'm a literature student at the moment and I always hate getting to a seminar and having to discuss a book that I have a lot of thoughts about and then finding I have nothing to say. Note-taking really helps me, even if it's just every once in a while while I'm reading to check in with my thoughts about the book. That being said I love your book content and am happy to listen to you talking about books for as long as you like!

Since you asked and I feel like venting: I’m not doing too well. I’ve got an illness called autoinflammatory syndrome and I’ve been bedridden since the end of May and I have to go back into hospital on Friday for a whole week of tests and I had to drop out of all my uni courses this semester and all I want is a functioning body, but somehow I’m denied that luxury. I have had this illness ever since I was twelve years old, so I really should be used to it by now, but somehow it’s still endlessly frustrating to be confronted with your own body’s shortcomings. Oh well. I hope you are doing well! 💓
Also, I’m glad you’re keeping the book content integrated into your vlogs :) I read Christodora and absolutely loved it, it’s literally one of my all time favourite books now, and Freya sounds amazing as well, I’ll order it right away! My book recommendation: The Namesake, I read it in an immigration fiction class and it’s such a beautiful story.

Gonna have a vent too: I also have chronic conditions (Ankylosing Spondylitis, Hypermobility Syndrome and Fibromyalgia). It's hard to explain how I feel because I am in pain on a daily basis (but look 'normal' on the outside). And to people who ask, no, I'm not okay, I'm never okay, but please don't ever reply with "hope you feel better soon"! 🤦‍♀️ It's horrible being a prisoner in your own body.

    • @suzange14
      @suzange14 4 роки тому

I'm sorry to hear that and I can only imagine the confusion and betrayal that you could feel toward your body. You don't need me saying this but it's totally okay to not be okay sometimes and to just let all the feelings in. I hope that you're able to find some peace and something to fill your time that will bring you joy ❤️

If you want to get into the analysis of Literature I would highly recommend 'Beginning Theory by Peter Barry.' It's a good introduction to theoretical approaches, so you'll be able to identify what kind of reader you are and therefore be able to dissect texts when doing reviews :) I am an English Literature student in third year and this book is honestly a life saver!

For the bit about talking about books, I always like when people point out what they found surprising or fresh in a book, as opposed to what was just some standard maybe "feel good" thing or felt cheap. Also talking about the way the book takes you in, some books feel literally very "silent" (like Hoeg's Borderliners) and it becomes a very personal experience, in others there is a lot of context done for you which feels closer to watching a movie.

Hi Lizzy! I saw you mentioned American Dirt and I just wanted to make you aware of the controversy surrounding the book. A lot of people are upset, as it's a story about Mexican immigration by a non-Mexican author and is being referred to as trauma porn. There is a Vulture piece and Vox piece written about it that I suggest looking up before diving into that one!

I’ve just moved out of my boyfriends house and I now live in a flat alone, my city is still in lockdown so finding it really weird and horribly lonely, so hard to learn to live with just yourself. I can’t have silence and constantly have to have a video playing, which probably isn’t the best thing to do mental health wise with comparison and all that. Having days where I get out for walks and feel good and others where I can’t do anything at all and just feel completely empty... I love your videos so much and the podcast x

Your situation might be hard now, but what you are going through will make you a stronger, more resillient version of yourself. Embrace the silence and all the angst that you feel. It can be a horrible feeling, that empty silence and lonliness. You will come through it and you will feel happier in time. Trust that you need this down time to really appreciate any future happiness. Best wishes :)

I had a depressive episode as a result of emotional abuse four years ago, and I needed constant distraction too because it was just too painful to face my thoughts. I am still weaning off of it, after years of therapy and despite being in a safe, stable relationship now. It is a coping mechanism, don’t feel ashamed! As time passes you can practice taking short moments of silence. I love Lizzie’s videos as a chatty distraction, feels like I have a friend on speakerphone. Good luck in your healing 💕

I’m currently writing my masters thesis and never planned to go away for summer, so I have a lot of work to keep my mind occupied. Hi Lizzie! There are a lot of controversies about some of your books, If you want to really learn about racism or anything around that I’d recommend to actually check out ACTUAL Historical books (Facts and Dates and actual History :)) as well!
A lot of the (mainstream) books right now are literally just making money off of racism by writing emotional, polarizing story’s with missing historical backup or plain wrong historical preferences. The „white fragility“ Author for example twists around a lot of historical facts...
just a tip bc I find it Strange that everybody reads a ton of books by random people instead of hitting the library looking for the facts...

It’s a bit daunting trying to figure out my next steps as I just graduated from uni in London- sadly there has been better timing. Home from work, trying to rest and distract myself but feeling so restless and helpless. Surgery to come, I don't know when yet. Just trying to get through the day. It's great that you're talking about books at all! I work in a library, and our reader's advisory head suggests starting with why you picked the book to begin with and how it made you feel while you read it. She says that often your talk will develop organically from there.

As a lot of people have commented “American Dirt” has a lot of controversy around it. Please skip it. From what I’ve read it’s a book about the latinx experience, I believe Mexican, but I don’t recall too well, written by a white woman who received an astronomical advance for writing the book. I’ve heard it’s trauma porn. There’s also definitely a latinx who would be down to write a book about their experience and deserves that advance more, given their lived experience, than the author of “American Dirt”.

I'm in Sydney, and have been going back to work regularly now for the last 3 weeks. It's been good to see everyone, have little office chit chat and get back to routine. At the moment Victoria the state next to mine is going under a second wave. It's concerning and also disappointing that our government haven't reacted more quickly. It may affect us here in NSW, and we may go back to lockdown. I'm keeping calm and positive, just wait and see what happens. Hope you well.

Thankfully, I'm doing okay. I'm in Manchester, so I definitely feel your pain about the muggy weather. Everything's basically open again, and I'm torn about it because, on one hand, I'm glad that small, local businesses are getting customers again, but I'm really not sure if it's safe to live life the way we were just yet.
Though I live in the UK, I'm American, and it's really interesting (but refreshing!) to hear you talk about black authors and to see you unpack Pecola's desire for blue eyes and the experiences that lead her to those thoughts and doubts about her beauty. Aiming for the Eurocentric standard of beauty is something that I think almost all black women (including myself) have had to grapple with in life, so it was really nice to hear you talk about it ❤️
I think I've put nearly all the other books you mentioned on my Goodreads wish list, so thank you for the recs and keep them coming! I also loved the jeans you picked in the end - I'll have to check those out!
Hope every day is a little bit better for you, and sending all the good vibes!

I would recommend See No Stranger by Valarie Kaur...she is a Sikh activist, filmmaker and civil rights lawyer. I am still reading it and loving it. She studied the impact of the aftermath of 9/11 on Sikhs and others in the US. It starts there but it moves through all the issues of historical racism and the movement forward. It’s all about what she calls revolutionary love...so needed at this time!

Hi, just wanted to let you know that White Fragility is being heavily criticized as it is a white author profiting off of racism. was looking for this comment before i posted something similar. imo, if you're looking to become a more thoughtful and analytical reader and you've already bought the book i'd recommend reading it in conjunction with some supplementary texts and finding people to discuss it with.
eve ewing, a poet-professor i follow on twitter mentioned that when she assigned the book to her class she also assigned this essay: slate.com/human-interest/2019/09/white-fragility-robin-diangelo-workshop.html
which includes some quotes from this essay (which is much more academic): www.borderlands.net.au/vol3no2_2004/ahmed_declarations.htm
i'm black and haven't read/don't plan to read the book but my major recommendation for getting more out of your readings by nonwhite authors/about nonwhite experiences is finding people to talk about them with

I disagree. It’s a fantastic book. Yes, listen to black voices and believe them, but Robin DiAngelo has years of experience and research. White Fragility is super clear.
I would recommend as well Reni Eddo-Lodge’s (Why I don’t talk to white propel about race) book and Afua Hirsch (BRITish), they are fantastic and I learned a lot but White Fragility is definitely a must-read, in my opinion.

Anita Goa You might have liked it, but if various Black folks, including educators on racial issues, are criticizing it and have said its better to consume other texts on race by Black authors then they should be listened to. You saying “yes, but” to center your feelings about the book over Black voices is an issue. These folks have their whole lifetime of dealing with racism, which definitely outweigh whatever DiAngelo has done.

Of course BLM has been huge and for me that has actually had more effect on me this spring than covid. Just wanna say, I love how much focus books has gotten in your life and videos. One way to frame your thoughts about books - distinguish between ‘What I Liked (and Didn’t) ’ and ‘What the Author Did Well (and Didn’t)’.
So for example, with Freya, you might say “I liked that women played a central role” and a separate thought could be “but, the female characters lacked variety complexity”.
It is also helpful to think of what could have made it better (what could have made the characters more real, the themes more potent). And, do you think the author achieved what they set out to?
How did it make you feel when you were reading it? What was the reading experience like.
Just some thoughts on talking about books.

I love that you actually want to know haha. it's been pretty bad here in the Philippines. Covid cases are still going up which is pretty scary. Can't sit down and read a book as well, i feel like i'm not in the best head space for a book; so it's all Netflix for me :)

I took a course in college where we read the entire collected works of Toni Morrison and it changed my life. The Bluest Eye was the first book of hers I read. To this day there are scenes from the book I can still vividly recall. It amazes me that her words are in the world yet oppressive ignorance and unearned privilege persist. Highly recommend her collected essays and speeches, The Source of Self Regard.

Hey Lizzy! Feeling a bit odd right now - Melbourne has just entered into another 6 week lockdown due to a spike in cases, after experiencing a semblance of normality with everything having reopened for a little while.
Loved the Weekday try on, it came at the perfect time as I've been debating which styles to try & have been looking for similar content! And will never complain about book chat - have popped a few of your recommendations on my never-ending TBR list x

Since you asked how I'm feeling honestly the last couple of weeks have felt very isolating. As someone with two long term health conditions which affect my lungs and breathing I can't participate in the world right now so to see other people going back to life as if it where normal or more normal is isolating as you feel the exception. To me the thought of going out is not something that I would even be able to consider. The only times I've left the house since march are to go to the beach down the road from me which is miles long so you can always find somewhere empty. In good news I found out I'd passed the second year of my degree with the exception of one module which we're still waiting to be marked.

Hi Lizzy. I normally never comment but since you asked, here it goes. I live in New Zealand and things here are really good, far better than anywhere else in the world, I imagine. It's a good place to be in at the moment. I really enjoy your book reviews and I do enjoy your recommendations. As for what you should put on your reading list, if you're looking for easy reads, I highly recommend Lucinda Riley's Seven Sisters series of 6 books. It is beautifully written and really enjoyable to read. Wishing you all the best. 😊 ❤️

Hey Lizzy! I really really enjoyed this vlog - I love hearing you talk about books! Even if you feel you aren't super well versed in talking about literature, I always feel like I can connect with the way you describe books and have gotten so many amazing recommendations from you! I just recieved The Gallow's Pole in the mail today and cannot wait to read it, and I also recently finished My Brilliant Friend and have picked up the next book in the series because I loved it so much. If you are interested in learning more about literature and how to discuss it, I would recommend the book How to Read Novels Like a Professor by Thomas C. Foster. It has changed the way I read and I feel like I enjoy literature so much more as a result!
I just added Freya to my 'to-read' list - it looks right up my alley :).

I Know This Much is True by Wally Lamb is a really great fiction read that surrounds a main character dealing with mental illness and family dynamics. The length of the book initially scared me, but wound up sailing through the 900ish pages in a little over a week. I’ve been recommending it to everyone!

Hi Lizzy, I think I’m good. I got my MSc at the beginning of June and now I’m in the process of writing my research proposal for a PhD application in Machine Learning. So from now until September/October I’ll be doing that. Honestly, everything has been really good in the last couple of months, especially compared to March and April (I live in Italy, specifically near the town where Covid started to spread - you were so kind to reply to my IG direct some time ago when I told you about my dad and relatives being sick with Covid and your vlogs being my source of daily escape/peace/motivation - I confirm they still are). Anyway, everything is good, I graduated cum laude, my dream professor wants to work with me on my research proposal, my family, friends and I are healthy, but I always have a weird feeling. Maybe because of all the bad stuff I experienced at the beginning of the lockdown and maybe because now I’m scared of everything, because I don’t want my family to get sick again and I don’t feel safe going out to the restaurant, cafe, or other places now that we're allowed. Although I'm regularly seeing my boyfriend, I’m scared of meeting friends again (feeling so stupid writing this, but it’s how I feel), even though I know I shouldn’t because we would wear masks etc. I don’t know, everything should be really good at the moment, but this pandemic really messed up with my mind and with my anxiety. I’m just taking my time to feel completely good and safe again. Until then, I am only doing what feels good to me, hoping everyone around me understands. (Writing this was a good way to stop and reflect so thank you)

I read It Ends With Us, too, and I totally agree that it is a fluffy romance read for the most part, but I honestly think it stands apart from most of the romance genre because of the way the main character comes to terms with her experiences with abusive relationships. She grew from viewing the women who are trapped in abusive relationships from "she's in a trap of her own making, if she were stronger she would leave" to a more complex and empathetic view of the situation, which is that it's never so simple as "just leaving" when part of the abuse is often the little glints of hope or affection that draw people back in, and the relationships with others that may make leaving harder. I just wish this character development wasn't so shrouded in the fluffiness of the rest of the book, although maybe that gives it more mass appeal?

Hi Lizzy, I love your vlogs so much and really enjoy you speaking about culture & books. Only one thing resonated in my mind and think is a good timing to say it with everyone reflecting on their behaviors. As an Argentinian it is weird to hear people saying America or American related to USA when America actually means many other countries as well like mine. I think since we are speaking about racism and nationalities, this is an interesting subject to discuss. Just point it out cause I heard from you but of course I understand where it comes from. Again, love your content and have to say you rocked those jeans! Thanks,

Lizzy, I would advise against American Dirt. Read up about it at least, there are issues with it. In re: Toni Morrison, Beloved is great, so is Sula and Tar Baby. I especially love Tar Baby.
I'm in California and it's a mess. Our cases are skyrocketing. My mental health is suffering severely from nearly four months of being mostly isolated. I have a pre existing condition that puts me at a moderate risk of developing complications from COVID so I have had to be extremely vigilant. Honestly most of the time I am just trying to distract myself from the catastrophe unfolding in my country. There are local and state officials across the country who are making valiant efforts to protect their communities, but because there has been no federal coordinated response, the patchwork state-by-state approach is failing. The fundamental weaknesses and failures of our republic become clearer by the hour. Personally I have no idea what my future holds. I have at least developed a new hobby of baking my way through Magnus Nilsson's Nordic Baking Book, which has been fun.
