    Omg I loved Wolf Hall! I read Wolf Hall and Bring up the Bodies as books and have just listened to all three on audible. Love, love, love them. To such a degree I had developed a slight crush on Thomas Cromwell by the end of Wolf Hall - such a compelling and intriguing character.
    I can understand why it didn’t work for you but I’m definitely in the other camp.

    Hi Lizzy, loving all your content at the moment and find it very inspiring! Really interesting to hear your thoughts on Shantaram, I read it when I was a teenager and loved it but feel like if I reread it now I would totally agree with you. You should put The Secret History by Donna Tartt on your list it is an amazing read that I think you would really love!

    In Shantaram, Roberts paints himself in such a way that you imagine him to be quite good-looking...when I'd finished reading it, I Googled him and found out what he really looked like. Let's just say he's been utilising some considerable artistic licence!!

    Lizzy, I so enjoy hearing about your reads and I’m glad you’re able to get into it again. I’m still having trouble concentrating I did want to say though that Wolf Hall was a book that I couldn’t stop thinking about after reading it. I hope you will put it away and go back to it in more relaxed times. If you come at it the way you mentioned you will find the dreamlike feel of it and the magic in the character of Cromwell that Hilary Mantel has created. I adore anything about the Tudors and this enhanced that for me because it focused on Cromwell instead of Anne B or Henry, etc. Can’t wait for more of your content. And the moors are so beautiful!!

    Shame about the Mantel. I like you suffered from difficulty concentrating on books initially so saved Mirror and Light until I could and I'm glad I did. Mantel's writing is beautiful but takes concentration (I've definitely had to keep going back a few pages when my mind wanders). Some books need a particular mind and space to work, others can be read anywhere. I think the Cromwell books are a time/space thing.

    I remember a really long time ago seeing Shantaram in IMDB, supposedly in 'pre-production'. It was meant to star Johnny Depp (guessing the main character/author) and a massive Bollywood star - Amitabh Bachchan was meant to be in it as well. But then it disappeared. Actually just read about it and Johnny Depp has acquired the rights for the book!

    • @LizzyHadfield
      @LizzyHadfield  4 роки тому +4

      Oh that’s interesting. I imagine the author would be thrilled at the thought of Depp playing him. Hahaha

    • @hildee8802
      @hildee8802 4 роки тому +1

      Johnny Depp owned the rights since the book was new. They were planning on making a movie (or I think it was actually supposed to be a trilogy), but they never got around to it because Johnny Depp refused to film in India because supposedly he didn't think it was safe. The plan was to do it in Morocco instead, but there were disagreements about that, since India is such an important part of the story. Last thing I heard is that it will be a tv series produced by Apple and that Charlie Hunnam plays Gregory David Roberts.

    Shantaram is one of my favorite books, and I've never heard anyone say they didn't love it. It's many years since I read it, but as I remember I didn't find him self absorbed, but I thought he had self irony, humor and a big ego yes. But in a cool way. He even described himself as ugly, and I think more a guy who were pretty lost but who were willing to take huge chances and to really live. And I think more the lack of self analysis is a good thing, it's not supposed to be deep like that, but more a bit of a fascinating story and entertainment.
    I do agree that the best part is the part from Mumbay, and that part was more than enough for a book itself.

      It’s called anxiety and depression over a uncertain situation you have no control over. Everyone is allowed to feel down, acknowledging you feel that way is better than not.

    I appreciate hearing about what you're reading and I love Jess. My only recommendation is maybe only talking about books that you've enjoyed or finding a more substantive/less harsh way to say you didn't get on with something. I've found that when you critique a book you speak in absolutes, "anyone could see this coming" (which may not be the case as all of our literary educations are different) or on instagram stories you've captioned books, "this is shit." I only offer this because authors put a lot of time and effort into producing stories that many of us readers couldn't have strung together and that sort of discourse doesn't always sit well as it could be seen by the author without providing them employable feedback for future projects. Nonetheless, I love your vlogs and appreciate you discussing how we can swing in and out phases of focus. We have very different literary taste, yet both love Jess, so it's fascinating to watch.

      @LizzyHadfield  4 роки тому +11

      Thank you for your comment - it’s constructive and so I’m always happy to engage around things like this. I‘m not sure I used the exact words “anyone could see this coming” (sorry if I did), but I understand parts could have been worded better. I do want to defend myself and say that policing my words so much can be hard - especially when it’s the spoken word. If someone was to understand something I didn’t, I wouldn’t take it as an insult to my intelligence at all. So I hope no one actually takes that personally. But I do understand your point and will take it on board. Thank you xx

      @@hejcarmen9405 Totally agree, I think critical reviews are important and useful, but I do believe substance is imperative And evidently that could be a thing that is particular to me and in no way am I saying that is the case for everyone. It could be in part be due to I read and analyse books through the lens of storytelling, style, and overarching themes (family, environmentalism etc) and so when I talk about them I enjoy in-depth discussion about its faults, whether they be substantive, thematic, stylistic, as well as their triumphs. But i also can see how it could a bit boring and, especially now, less digestible. Thanks for your response!

      @@LizzyHadfield Thanks for your response! I don't want you to think I'm offended, I'm not! I could've forgone the quotations. I also didn't consider how my suggestion could feel like a form of policing given your platform and many people constantly sharing their thoughts on how/what you communicate. I'm sorry that I may have contributed to it, that's not my intention. It's only a suggestion and, of course, I understand if you decide it is not authentic to how you discuss books or it's another online pressure. xx
