Topher and Tedward are a great pair. Two guys talking cars and I wonder, "Y'all get paid for that? NICE!"
Theyre top2 fr
thetopher described the design of this car perfectly in his video- it looks like it had an allergic reaction to something😂
damn I just realized Topher and Tedward are two different people
@@Ar1AnX1x yh this also got me so confuse at first
Yup, BMW design is dead. A company changes over time with its people, and BMW did not change for the better.
BMW is dead to us now regardless of their sales. Keep the old BMWs, way better than anything they will make until they go out of business… they think we are fools…
@@Ar1AnX1x That is such a meme at this point
@faheemabbas3965 the regular 3 series is still beautiful
Tom and Chris combo is the best combo😂 Love how extensive you guys have covered this car :)
Edit: You mentioned the size. It’s shockingly big. I parked my E90 sedan next to a 230i coupe and they genuinely almost look like they’re the same size. The M2 is wider too.
Ah yes, the brothers are back, and this time they're reviewing the "allergic reaction" in a 6spd manual. Excellent.
@Bezos-cp9gkno
Always great to see Tedward and The Topher together. I agree with your thoughts whole heartedly, except the suspension doesn't feel that stiff to me. Maybe even too compliant in comfort mode. That's on not so good Southern California roads, but probably a different story in Michigan. It makes a great small GT car, but not really a special drive TBH. The engine is a real beast though!
I had an e90 335i and the 1-2 gear change was so hard to get smoothly. You had to really pay attention and get the RPMs just right. I've had several BMWs with manuals and that was the only one that had that issue. It was actually super annoying and impacted my enjoyment of the car. Sounds like this M2 has a little bit of that, which is disappointing.
E46 M3 is that way, it’s mainly the Getrag transmissions but the BMW linkage is also apart of the issue on the ZF’s
Concur in my e92 335i manual, especially before the transmission/fluid is warmed up. I never drove a 'F' generation, but did get a chance to test drive a G82 M4 with a manual and thought the transmission and clutch feel were much improved over my e92. I left very impressed by the M4, yes it is a big car, what I envisioned a 5-series to be, but it drove very well.
So it is a thing! My e90 328i manual has the same issue, but it's the only manual I've driven, so I have no comparison.
@TheLPCGAMING I have the zf 6 speed in a e90 328i, do you think a short shifter could help?
@@Lemingtona-x5g Probably because you were too busy getting bummed in the back by a femboy.
I bought mt girlfriend a 2006 330i with a 6 speed and she fell in love with bmws. Now this is our goal, hopefully we can get one before they discontinue the manuals for good.
I just wanted to say , thank you for teaching all of us how to drive a manual properly. :)
"They don't pull out quick enough"
- Tedward 2023
It was an absolute choice to leave this in 😂
@@TedwardDrives Just saying I love your videos, they feel fresh and natural and I always wait eagerly for you to drop something
Lucky for him, he can't get pregnant.
oh my god i just realized what the idea behind the Tedward logo was. I was driving on the autobahn yesterday and when I saw the no speed limit sign, it made me realize! very smart!
:)))
having space in backseats in m2 is awesome
Good review video. I agree with you about it looking like big Lego blocks stuck on the outer rear bumper. I don't like how many new cars now look like they forgot the dash gauges, etc, and just look like they stuck an iPad on the dash as an after thought. I like all that built in.
Would love a small text with metric units when you quote imperial units. (Like Doug Demuro does) Makes it easier for the non US audience you have :)
Word
You two are my favourite duo although I prefer your format so I'm always stoked to see his feature on your channel.
We need a similar M3 (or M4 would do too) review soon. They feel so much more complete compared with the M2, but the thing is - to each their own and on top of that I haven't heard too many opinions on things you value and pay attention to in these types of cars. I recently found a black on black M2 spec looking kinda appealing, but then I went through ready-to-collect 2 series listings and at the price point of $75k for an M240i and $100k for an M2 (both brand new; forget the specs as I didn't pay much attention to them, just wanted to see a price for a produced car waiting for a buyer) I don't see the upgrade worthy those $25k but more so I really can't see neither of those prices be justified for what you get. I might be biased because I would've never thought of a ~3-4 yo, slightly used car as a worse option than a brand new car, but in my eyes, when it comes to the M2s I would go for the previous gen 100 out of a 100 times if offered. TLDR the new M2 feels incomplete and I have a hard time justifying it at such high price point.
Great video, it is refreshing to see people be critical of the direction the automotive industry is going towards and not sugarcoat the stuff that bothers them about new cars, that's why I love your vids.
A friend of mine works for bmw North America and I got a ride in a new m2 the other day. From the passenger side it felt really good suspension wise and power. Can’t speak on the steering feel. I will say, under acceleration, that’s where you feel the weight. You know it’s going fast but with all the weight you can feel the momentum the car has from carrying all the baggage. Weight is the enemy of the modern sports car. You can make heavy cars handle great, but you can’t make them feel great compared to a lighter car.
I think it’s a great car, I liked it and wouldn’t mind owning one (if I could afford it) but I wouldn’t want it to be my only sports car.
The car makes sense for the person who wants a sports car with all the modern technology but doesn’t care about the drive like we do
Everyone keeps talking about the hump on seat in between the legs and how it was a mistake. But I guess, those ppl fail to realize that’s for 5-point racing harness/belts. It actually had a function. 😊
Thanks for the honest review. My E90 M3 is not going anywhere.
dream car when i have the money, please don’t sell it 🙏
The two T's, Topher and Tedward! What a duo! The car seems really confused what it wants to be.
I think the amount of electronics make things seem numb and vague. All the settings you can change through the infotainment seem to just complicate things.
No tires will survive lots of track days, but general driving this car is lighter in weight than my f150 and has wider tires, and I routinely get 50-70k miles out of my AT tires on my trucks. Using them mainly on road with occasional beach/trail use at low PSI. I think most people will get the rated warranty millage out of their tires in this car, and if not you know what you were doing.
Pretty impressive-with the touch of a button (M1) you can turn this car into a rare mid-engine sports car from the late 70’s. They knew everyone would hate the look of the new M2.😂
My e46 has the same springy clutch and I love it. I’m glad the M2 keeps it (I plan on buying one in a couple years)
This thing needs mild hybrid, and AWD with a big rear wheel bias. BMW has truly out done themselves with this car from a viewers perspective.
The fenders of this remind me of an e30 m3 a lot. I’m a fan.
Old m2 was nicer looking by far IMO
I love this car because it makes me really want to buy an E46 M3 instead lol. Yes they're a pain in the ass but worth it in this dark era of modern "M" cars.
Nah just get a b58 powered m240i. In this day and age you’re gonna want a turbo.
@@ps3alphagamer12 true, that's a valid point! I've presently got an E92 M3 and F87 M2 but I sure do love that B58 engine
@@ps3alphagamer12 "In this day and age you’re gonna want a turbo." - I feel like its the exact opposite. Everything has a turbo nowadays. I miss the instant response of an NA.
This beats all the other M2 versions and the 1M. I have a F 2 series but I have to be honest ..
F87 is the one. Still glad they produce this nonetheless.
"...is this the manual you wanted to save or are you going to be like The Graduate, and you're going to be on that bus, wondering if you made the wrong decision." Such a great left field reference!
2:53 yeah thats really only a ski pass through, the m240i actually has a proper armrest (with cupholders) which if you found one you could mod in. Guess they took that out for weight reasons
The lack of seamless integration between the dashboard and the screen annoys me a lot, despite that it's a nice car, I'd get the previous generation one just to have an actually nice-looking dashboard.
You suprised me having topher in this video, i didnt know you guys knew each other ibe always loved both channels
I’m about to order an m2, I test drove it & loved it, HOWEVER.. the clutch was placed so damn high that my toe part of my shoes were hitting the plastic trim every time I shifted, may have to cancel it.
I honestly like the electric steering rack in my X3 M40i, the sport steering can be a bit too heavy but feels good with spirited driving. Not sure how different it is on the newer models. I can definitely feel the road, tires also play a huge role in this. Runflats are so terrible and I bet this had them
The instrument cluster colours reminds of playing Diablo with the health and Mana 😆
I fear that BMW has lost its way. Excellent motors and muddled designs around them.
Unfortunately i just can’t get passed the looks of this ( or afford it lol ). Got an F82 just now but probs gonna go for an og m2 next. Cannot understand the modern styling but thats how they seem to be going
Honestly for cars like BMWs I reckon go automatic. My 135i m sport is auto but has paddle shifters and I’m glad I switched from my old manual car to a automatic bmw.
Harry Metcalfe did a video just yesterday on this and he said *not* to get the carbon seats with the junk holder. His car had the normal seats.
Harry is a smart man. He’s definitely right.
Does the clutch grab at the biting point or does it just glide past it, of that makes any sense. I prefer the grab
I'm not sure if it's just the one I tried, but the clutch pedal was awful. Maybe the worst of any manual car I've driven. The pedal is long, light and springy, but the clutch pedal feel and weighting is inconsistent. Boo
Love the Speedmaster of your mate.
A complete front end redesign and it would be 10 times better. Then the rear could use some more work lol
front end is great, just swap out the grill for mesh or vertical bars and it’s nice improvement. i think the rear needs work, a better diffuser, slight lowered, wider stance on the wheels
Hopefully I will be buying this baby second hand in 1.5 year looks amazing!
Love the 2019 M2(I drove it at an M town event in 2019 and I loved it)
both Mercedes and BMW seem to have had a bit of identity crisis for some of their cars for some reason where they can't figure out what its exactly for, while Porsche doesn't seem to have that problem, and it doesn't mean their cars are bad, they're so good but some of them just lack personality
noticed the steering was in comfort the whole time but that was your complaint. was that on purpose? wonder if adro will come to the rescue with the styling like they did the g8x
It was so frustrating to hear him constantly talk about floaty steering, with the steering in comfort. There is a massive difference between having the steering in comfort vs sport. Ironically, if he had just switched it to Sport/Sport+ and left it there, it would have been all settings in Sport. But nope, he hit the M1 button in the beginning which is a custom profile that has the steering in comfort mode.
@@Herpaderp10 literally me the whole time 😂
@@Herpaderp10he has been other comments explaining that sport/sport+ didn’t change anything
BMW M2 THICC
I think the looks are fine in person except it's missing a big park-bench time-attack wing on the back to balance that rear.
Very energetic today, love it! I guess if the new M2 can make you feel like that then it’s a pretty great car
I think it’s very weird that BMW’s really don’t have a lot of road feel through the steering now, I know it’s not “”exactly”” a BMW but my ‘14 Mini Countryman is an absolute dog when it comes to steering, even a light abrasion in the road is felt through the pedals and the steering wheel. On the track you have to be on it when you go over any bump or a curb.
I read a review, where someone compared the Z4 and the Supra Mk5. The Supra was alot sportier apparently and the steering sharper. It feels like BMW is now only making GTs nowadays. I find this sad, because back then even the base model BMWs always had sharp and precise steering.
blame electric steering.
The Mundial Goals are solid money well spent.
The tophers and the tedward are the best 👌
Manual sales are up!
Just FYI your complaints about steering were when the screen clearly shows comfort steering. It’s at least tighter in sport.
sport makes it heavier. Not more tactile.
@@TedwardDrives Ah ok I think I mis-heard what was being said then. I will say after taking delivery of a 2024 G87 the comfort mode steering feels 'wobbly'. I set it to sport and it doesn't feel like I have to constantly correct, but still no steering feel at all vs something like an E46.
Sweet i always enjoy watching your videos.
That car is an eyesore. The old 1 series is cute.
I'm getting ready to order one, same blue with manual but with cognac seats which doesn't have that leg seperator.
I think they discontinued the tan and white seat options for 2025.
Maybe changing the steering to sport mode would help to feel something that's happening on the road??
steering was set to comfort in the video not sport ://
This doesn’t change the feel actually 😂
All sport mode does is make it artificially heavy. Comfort is the best way to drive it. The word “Sport” is one of the biggest lies of the auto industry. It is meaningless and subjective. Anything can mean sport.
4:04 that tongue is crazy bruh thought that was an ankle monitor
LOL
I bet this is way more fun to drive than it looks
1.8t in my opinion are just way too much weight in an M2. I drive a i30N DCT and I already find it weights too much at 1.5t. I feel like BMW is making every car too big nowadays and then compensate it with a bigger engine.
Great Video!!!
This is my dream car!
Sean Sean is a better M2 salesman. 😂
I have an F series ,but I have to admit it beat all versions of the previous 2 series and1M .. and it’s not bad looking . ( in my opinion)
It's not even about the shapes but... whyyyyy is it SO big ? Like it feels absolutely enormous for a "little" m2
2:00 the 1M was actually only $47k base in 2011, but adjusted for inflation that’s $63,900 which is $700 more than this car’s base price. The carbon package is a rip off, this is a great deal without it.
Michigan roads help putting into perspective Northeastern roads (and Italian roads alike).
Just came back from Italy, far nicer roads than NY.
Thank god i´m not the only one who hate the bucket seats. They look cool no doubt but they are soooo uncomfortable😂
To be realistic though, buckets aren't made for comfort. They are made to hold you in place whilst performing maneuvers where you would normally be sliding around in your seat. They are made to increase the performance feel of the car, not the luxury aspect.
@@danebley986 While that is true i fit in every other bucket-seat. If you´re uncomfortable the whole time while driving you´ll start to lose concentration. And that´s not a great thing.
the 2 series only makes sense in all black to hide the weird parts... but once you do, oofff is it bad ass
Best Scion TC body kit yet.
You guys have done a great job covering this car. I’ve got an F87 6MT and I’m waiting for an allocation for a G87. Have you guys driven the auto? Any chance we’re going to see a video of that any time soon. I’ve heard mixed opinions on how the car is with the ZF8. I’d love to hear what you guys think of it, and which transmission you prefer.
I've only driven the ZF8 on an autocross and it was pretty darn good!
@@TedwardDrives It struck me that the first video I saw of you driving the M2, you seemed pretty happy with the manual. In this video I believe you described it as “a bit of a dog” to drive around town. So I’m eager to hear your take on how the two transmissions compare in the same around-town driving. Hopefully you guys get to spend some more time with the ZF8 version at some point and you can post a video. Thanks for what you do!
As someone who is VERY new to driving manual, is it wise to go for a manual G87 as a daily or is the auto a better option? I know both options are seen as equally good but I am a bit scared to try and spend so much money on something that I may or may not be comfortable driving...let alone have fun with. Alternatively, I could always get a cheaper second car with a manual to properly warm up to the experience. Its just that I always have second thoughts about the auto every time I hear someone online rave on about manuals being superior. Whereas in my POV, the auto in the G87 just felt like a more sensible option. My lack of real experience with such cars is what's holding me back I suppose.
Manual is just Muscle memory. And new Manuals are so damn easy to drive that you can miss half the clutch's biting point and it will handle it for yourself
I got a little bit of fomo recently with the G87 wanting to trade in my Supra 6MT. I know they aren't similar cars, but would be nice to have that S58 engine.
Audis are better on steering than BMWs these days. Had a hard time going in the BMW direction but ultimately did go that way mostly due to the nicer interior and small bump up in HP, speaking of the S5 vs m440i.
Imo I feel like everyone is getting way ahead of themselves with the overall look a feel of this car. I mean I remember when the g8x dropped and everyone shit on the grill and no everyone is fiendishly digging for them(similar to the mk5 Supra). I feel like this will probably be similar. Also bmw has proven that with very little mods the power can increase by a substantial amount. I love this car and part wants to buy one pure to spite people hating on the platform.
It's such an awesome review, and obviously not just some BMW FANBOY thinking the car is flawless 😂
Ok I have a question why did you complain about how the steering feeling is bad when your steering settings are in comfort mode instead of sports mode
That just changes the weight. It adds no feel or texture.
@@TedwardDrives thanks for the clarification Ted. Love watching your videos!(Even though haven’t subbed yet)
If they made the M2 with Xdrive, I’d get it. That was the selling pint for me between the M3 and M2
I mean there’s an M240i.. which weighs less with AWD
@@fuze3522 I guess so, but Buying a BMW M240i with xDrive instead of an M2 is like choosing a high-end gaming laptop with a powerful graphics card but not getting the top-tier model - you're getting close, but you're missing out on that ultimate gaming experience and performance that the flagship model, or in this case, the M2, would provide.
@@saricbarcello4780m240i is just an extremely good daily wouldn’t be mad with either
@@saricbarcello4780I think the m240 isn’t necessarily a worse experience, unless you absolutely want the manual. Much better for dailying.
@@saricbarcello4780 id rather have an M240 tbh, i think its a better looking car. And it has AWD while still being lighter! You can bump the engine up to the same 460 horsepower with just a tune and intake. Id rather use the money i save from not getting an M2 to build the ultimate M240i ha. Like a custom built PC vs a high end pre built :3
How does this compare and contrast to the fl5 type r?
faster...more numb. more powerful brakes. less engaging.
BMW cars are always on the tightly sprung side of the suspension spectrum. The steering and suspension are fine. That is obviously what more people want when buying these. Nobody wants gooey suspension on a BMW sports car.
This is around where I live and most of the roads are in horrible condition
In the 90's/early 2000's, ALL BMW's had near perfect steering. It didnt matter if you bought the base 323i or the M3, you got the same tactile steering rack that tracked smoothly on the highway as well. Same for the 5-series, fabulous steering through all the trim levels. At some point, I'd say around 2008-2010, BMW decided to give up on being the enthusiast brand. Now, the 2-series was the last hold-out enthusiast model, and theyre watering this car down with crappy steering and a half-assed manual tranny. Well, at least there's still Porsche. Thats where I've shifted my attention to.
Love that color matched Zandvoort Blue can of La Croix in the cupholder, how much was that option??
Definitely going for the youth demo with that The Graduate reference. 😂
Hahaha
Didn't like G80/82, now i am in love. Didn't like this and now it's growin on me. I hate new 5 series but shit change fast wtih BMW. Don't know how, but they make cars that you don't like at first, and then you like and like them more.
Do you think that a VW GTi or R has a better steering than this M2?
Tldr - I could live with it
What's that green light that keeps coming on the display? Never seen it before 😁
Because half the time they don’t pull out quick enough … nice
i love the new m2
Althought i'd appreicate bmw for rlly trying to make it for what it is, I just can't imagine myself go to the garage during the weekend and drive this thing after seeing that face! or that interior.
Tedward.. you mentioned the steering a lot of times while you were literally on the m tuning window which said steering on comfort instead of sport...
Correct. Sport makes it heavier but does not increase feedback. Heavy does not equal feel. Just more unnecessary effort. I drive cars for a living so I know what the buttons do.
@@TedwardDrives Ok thank you for the clarification, is the M3 better in any way at the steering? What about dampening/comfort on the suspension
It's sad that BMW dash design inspiration comes from a 1988 Oldsmobile Toronado Trofeo, with a squared dash of GMT400.
you're in comfort steering the whole time...
It’s the only bearable mode. It just gets artificially stiffer in sport and up. Awful.
It's bloody awesome!
The shape is literally the 2 series grand coupe
the interior is great, but luckily when you’re driving, you can’t see the exterior much 😅
nice car
I love the hate this car gets! Maybe I’ll be able to get my hands on one.
I’m taking a Porsche Cayman over this every time. Great vid
I wish BMW would put a manual in the M340i.
King video.
