I did mine a week back. Probably the best mod that has been released to date. Perfect screen, perfect form factor. Amazing. And your video more than does it justice.
At first, I thought It wasn't working. But I was using old, rechergeable Sony batteries. I swapped by a pair of common batteries, and it worked. Man, what a blast this IPS screen is! For me, the most fundamental part is the fact that it keeps the aspect of the original screen, in the sense of the dot matrix pixels. It's a dream come true for me.
I’m glad to see some more attention being given to the Pocket; they might be my favorite Game Boy models. While the IPS panels always get nice and bright and give amazing image quality, it’s so tough to want to do this given the battery life tests. Thanks for covering all the characteristics of this mod so thoroughly! Glad to see it done on a DMG style pocket too 🔥
An auxiliary 5v regulator can really help to increase that battery life. Simply desolder (or cut the output's trace) of the stock 5v rail, hook up the 3v and ground from the input of the stock regulator, and solder the output to the 5v input on the motherboard. Use some long wires to route the board to behind the speaker, while being mindful of the rear case's standoffs around the headphone jack area, and almost all of the Gameboy Pocket's power-related issues disappear. Flashcart compatibility is better, backlights stay a little brighter, and you can squeeze juuust a little more battery life out of a couple of AAA batteries. I wish there was more documentation on the process, but if you're willing to figure it out, a 2v (minimum) to 5v regulator seems to do the trick.
That battery life will be a deal breaker for many. I would rather see a full-size TFT display, which would be a good compromise between screen quality and battery life.

Finally a proper option for the GBP! I got the earlier LCD option for one of my GBP's a while ago that had the smaller screen and whilst it was good I missed the large GBP screen. This is perfect just ordered 2 to upgrade some of the units I've been fixing up :) Great review, thanks!
I just got the parts for this mod, can't wait to fix up my childhood gameboy! That said I am really happy they have shells that already cut to fit the screen.
Excellent video love the cool and calm voice presentation! Also I note Retromodding are aware of the flickering issues with the screen as the notes on the item state: When the grid line mode is turned on, some game scenes will flash when switching, which is a refresh problem of the motherboard of the console itself. This flashing is expected, and temporary.
Thank you Add! Glad you enjoyed the video! That's good to know, thank you for the info, I'm glad they are aware of the issue and letting people know. Cheers bud!

That be awesome! I got a game gear before I got a gameboy! The game gear hold a special place in my heart. I really do hope a new kit comes out. Cheers!
The "problems" are still there on the DGM's as well. I think it's the way the IPS screen reads the picture. If you play Donkey Kong Land there are weird flickering spots that happen on the level select screens. I have found the Ninja turtles Fall of the Foot clan game always takes up the max size of the IPS screen which is bigger than the opening so it cuts off the edge of both the left and right side of the screen.
I really appreciate the background music in this video. It's so much better and more relaxing than the usual generic techno garbage that most UA-cam channels use.
I’d be interested in seeing the battery life with a rechargeable lipo battery. It’s a very simple mod to do, and I would guess that it would improve the playing time available before needing to recharge. Plus, you can play it while it’s charging if you have to
Me too! I'm hoping there will be more support for the Game Boy Pocket in the future, especially since it's well known that it has battery life issues. I may have to do my own modification, haha! Cheers Brian!

Awesome! Glad the tutorial was helpful! The pocket IPS mod is one of my favorites. Now we just need a battery mod so we can get more than 3 hours of playtime. Cheers!
I think to not have the screen dim with a higher power draw cartdridge, like the EZ Flash Jr., the solution is to use constant power draw rechargeable batteries, or installing a GBP Li-Po battery mod kit. I'm sure the battery mod was covered by makho on his channel.

Congratulations, your channel is more , and more entretaining everytime I watch it! , one question, your console has a buzzing sound with this mod? or it just mine? Thanks!
Thank you Dave! Happy you’re enjoying the channel! Mine has the buzzing too. It seems to appear only when the screen is dimmed. At full brightness it goes away for me. I think that this is an issue for the initial batch of ribbon cables. I think it supposed to be fixed now. Unfortunately our will have the issue. The price of early adoption. Cheers buddy!
Man I wish someone made a kit for turning an ips SP into a Pocket, rechargeable battery and all. That form factor plus color, better battery, and GBA games? Would be amazing.
This Game Boy Pocket just look georgious, I love the DMG Color on the Pocket version. The kit look good, but what a shame that IPS screen have issue + the batterie life is really bad IMO. I'm curious to see what is going to be the next moded you going to make 😁
Yep I agree, it's going to be tough to get better battery like out of the gameboy pocket since it only has 2 AAA batteries. I also love the DMG style Pockets! Glad you're excited for my next video! I think it'll be good! Cheers!
Awesome video! Great job and looks great. My kit was missing a piece of the wire so I wanted to ask what would be a good substitution? Any general magnet wire??
Nice! I wonder if there are any modders out there working on a lipo battery kit? That would so awesome! I would say battery life is the one and only downside to this kit. Cheers!
Very true AndehX! I think it is dual purposed to both prevent dust from getting under the lens as well as keeping the LCD aligned. Depending on how precise the users shell trimming is, the LCD may have some wiggle room and slide around without the adhesive applied, since it isn't support on all sides. Thank you for the comment and I hope you are enjoying the channel! Cheers buddy!
Man the pocket is still my favourite one cause of the size , that og shell is my fav color , horizontal lines though :/ oh well there will always be a better screen at some point , I'd def just get a shell that's precut looks like a headache
The horizontal lines aren’t too bad, plus I think FunnyPlaying updated the firmware after the initial units shipped so they may actually be fixed. Not sure though. Hopefully retromodding makes an announcement. A pre trimmed option would be clutch! Cheers!
Hmm, a test with medium brightness and medium loudness would have been good. Nobody is using smallest or highest brightness setting (at least not usually). But I assume it should be somewhere around 2 hours, which is really a disadvantage. Don't think I will do this mod. I have an IPS modded GMB and GBC, these are working fine due to the AA batteries. GBP really needs a battery mod for using an IPS screen. PS: Nice and interesting video nevertheless! PPS: Nobody of the Gameboy fans wants to hear it.... but the best way to play classic Gameboy/ color games is still the PS Vita. I definitely prefer it over all my modded or unmodded Gameboys, it's even better as on a GBA AGS-101 or on a modded 3DS because of the much higher screen resolution (much better interpolation). Image is much larger as on a gameboy/ color but still perfectly sharp, even with interpolation, and with perfect contrasts due to the OLED screen. If you like, you can even use 1:1 pixel mode (wich has the best possible sharpness) and the screen size is still a bit bigger as a GBC screen. In addition it has good battery time, great controls and form factor. Personally I didn't find any better way to play GB/ GBC games. Also the Raspberry Pi handhels usually have screens with much smaller resolution.
Hey Thunderbird1337! Thanks for the comment! That's a great suggestion to have the volume turned on slightly. The only reason I turned it off is because I live in a small apartment and usually run the test at night while I sleep. As for the Vita, I think it's a fantastic console! I do plan on buying one at some point. That's good to know it does emulation well! I am planning to build a Raspberry Pi powered handheld in the near future, just waiting on some parts. Cheers dude!
It's a great kit and the glitches don't bother me too much. I actually barely notice them. I wouldn't be surprised if FunnyPlaying releases a V2 sometime soon. Cheers bud!
Thanks for the video mate, I was ready to get this but the screen problems make me wanna wait for a revision. Apart from the low brightness did you notice any problem loading the everdrive? Great editing as always. Thanks!
Hey Russell! I didn't notice any issues loading my everdrive, even with the eneloops. I imagine, however, a slightly depleted battery may have trouble loading the everdrive. Cheers buddy!
Will the ifixit toolkit you linked in the description contain all the tools needed to open up a GB Pocket and complete this project? Great videos by the way - you’ve inspired to try my hand at these mods. 👍
That will get you almost everything. I recommend some flush cutters and a craft knife as well for the shell trimming. I think I have links to those as well. Let me know if you have any more questions. Best of luck! Cheers!
That’s a tough call. If you can, practice soldering on a junk pcb. Soldering like any skill takes some practice first to get familiar. Hope this helps buddy! Best of luck! Cheers!
Please help! I tried this mod and just have a few issues. The screen comes on but the contrast wheel doesn't change the brightness. Also the touch pad isn't working.
I ordered a freckleshack screen for my gameboy color! Unfortunately I’ve been waiting about a month later than it was supposed to arrive ): was pretty excited to get it but have very disappointed as of recently due to it still not arriving.
I ordered 2 freckle shack ailoi kits from BennVenn also. The Game Boy pocket one was cancelled because he had issues with his ribbon cable supplier and I'm still waiting for my GBC one to arrive. I ordered these months ago. I feel bad for BennVenn, I think his supply chain was severely impacted by the current state of the world. I feel you frustration dude! Cheers!
Having issues opening up my DMG. A few of the screws have already stripped (even used the proper Y00 screwdriver) I’ve tried all the tricks in the book: rubber bands, tape, super glue...etc. I’m out of options. Is there a screw extractor you can recommend?
I just did this mod earlier this week, but now it seems to fly through batteries in a matter of 15 minutes or so. Then the screen goes dark and starts flickering until it eventually goes dark. At first I thought it might be my rechargable batteries, but it's doing the same thing with new ones. I then took out the cable set up that controlled the color palette and it worked a bit better, but still ended up going wonky after 20 minutes. I can't figure out what the issue is, as it was working fine before the new screen. You have any thoughts on what it could be? Any help would be appreciated and thanks.
So I went ahead and switched those wires to magnetic ones and the same thing is happening. It will play a few minutes before the screen gets vertical lines and then eventually goes black. However the sound will continue to play just fine. Also, it turns out that it is not draining batteries as I thought. As I just put some new Eneloops in there and they are still testing as full. I even switched out the mother board to another one and the exact same thing is happening. Not sure what could be causing this. Any thoughts?
@@lazymonkey7965 Yeah, it doesn't make any sense. I asked on the Reddit boards and we all thought that it was a power issue, so I routed the "POWER" wire further down the ribbon cable, as recommended by Makho (see link and scroll down to the bottom,) but still had no luck at all. I am at a total loss as what to do next. Was yours a Funnyplaying screen too?
Awsome video. I recently updated my GBC to an TFT LCFD screen and I have a GBP that needs an update. What battery size do you recomend for modding a GBP? I use for my GBC a pixel boy battery 2000mAh.
Thanks dude! I would get as large of a battery as you can fit. I wish there was a kit that would fit in the space available in the GBP, but it is a very small unit. You will need to trim a large portion of the battery well to fit a li-ion battery in there. Best of luck dude! Cheers!
I am having trouble with this mod. I bought the Funnyplaying IPS kit for my early non-LED MGB and everytime I hook it up I blow the F1 fuse. I bought 3 fuses from Console5 and this Kit has blown the stock fuse plus 2 from console5. I was told by the vendor that I need to upgrade my F1 fuse from the 0.5A to a 1A. Tito, did you have to take this extra step on your Gameboy pocket and replace the F1 fuse? I noticed yours does not have an LED battery light just like mine. Thank you in advance.
I just found your channel and subbing...I was waiting for this screen to be released but now I'm in two minds if to get this or just put a Freckle shack screen in my GBC instead , do you know what the average battery life is with those screens just playing original GB carts? I just watched your installing video but wondered about the battery life, thanks!
That’s a really great question Makoy! If your looking for battery life numbers for the freckle shack on a game boy color I’m not entirely certain. However, the freckle shack is supposed to be one of the more efficient backlight mods. I am almost 100% sure that it’s more efficient than the IPS screen. I am planning to do a gameboy color battery comparison video in the future. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help. Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions Thanks for the reply, it's much appreciated, as i said, I just came across your channel today and I'm going to make sure I start at the beginning and work through your videos, from what I've seen so far, you have done some great content!
Hi, I have been wondering if I can use this screen without soldering, like the GBA ones, I dont mind missing out on some functions since I will me moving soon so not buying extra tools atm. Thanks
Mine is pretty old, it’s a v1.2 cart. I’m sure the newer x7 does better I terms of power draw but I can’t say I have experience with it. No matter what I’m sure it’s a fantastic product! Cheers dude!
I'd imagine they would be just slightly worse than the alkaline batteries I tested. But the nice thing is you can always swap out the eneloops for charges ones and keep on gaming! Cheers dude!
I know, me too! I’m hoping that we get a battery mod for the pocket sometime soon! That’s the only real downside to the system. Fingers crossed! Cheers buddy!
so i have my gbc, already have an shell for it on the way..im not sure of what screen to get. wanna go for a drop in but unsure of which one..any suggestions?
There are a lot of drop in TFT backlight kits on the market. The only issue with those is that their screen are smaller than the original GBC screen, about 2.2 inches. If you want a full size you'll need to go with the FunnyPlaying, but it's not drop in. It depends on what's important to you. Check out my Game Boy Color Backlight series playlist, I go over a bunch of kits, I think it will be helpful. Also, let me know if you have more questions! Cheers
@@MachoNachoProductions so i went with the freckleshack kit :)seemed to be the most sensible one since im going with a clear shell. the iups uses a lot of extra space thats unused imo
Ill wait for the v2. 70 bucks is not worth it for me. This happened when i bought the v1 ips screen kit for the dmg for about 90 bucks. Soon after v2 was released and for much cheaper.
Very true. The power draw of the IPs and the flash cart is a lot for the little gbp aaa batteries. I’m hoping someone makes a battery mod for the pocket to address this. Cheers Anthony!
@@MachoNachoProductions I hope so too! The GBP is my favorite gameboy when it comes to form factor, however the use of aaa batteries really limit it. I know they are ways to add a rechargeable battery but my GBP is a complete transparent shell+button and I don't really want a ghetto looking battery mod being seen in the back haha.
I wonder if rechargeable battery mods are possible on the pocket... I could stomach this mod’s shorter battery life if I didn’t have to burn through AAAs all the time. I’ve seen Li-ion battery mods for gameboy color, but the pocket has so much less real estate to work with. I’ve also heard rechargeable AAAs aren’t always reliable for gameboys. Does anyone know if this mod is possible/already exists?
I haven't heard of any mods currently on the market. There is always the option to put in your own Li-Ion battery with a charging board but results may very in terms of how elegant the final product looks. I hope there will be a kit to address the Pockets battery life issues. I've had good luck with Panasonic Eneloop rechargeable battery. They are a bit more expensive but its better than buying Alkaline batteries all the time. Cheers buddy!
I have black screen. The console have power and red led is shinning but I have no image on screen... All the solderings are ok. It was a faulty screen, need to ask for a replacement 😥
I would double check the ribbon cable connections to the LCD and the GBC motherboard and make sure they are properly seated. Hope that works for you! Cheers buddy!
Hi, Were you able to solve your problem? I also have the same issue with a black screen whilst having power and sound. I have tried reconnecting the LCD board, and the Ribbon cable multiple times with no solution. I can't find any damage in the ribbon cable or elsewhere, I even tried a different GBP motherboard and no change. I'm stumped.

@@MachoNachoProductions yes, early adoption problem , but it's a good screen anyways, keep up the good work!
Man I wish someone made a kit for turning an ips SP into a Pocket, rechargeable battery and all.
That form factor plus color, better battery, and GBA games? Would be amazing.
Check out boxy pixel. He has a really cool kit coming out called the sp unhinged. When I get mine I’ll be doing a video on it! Chills be awesome!
@@MachoNachoProductions wow you weren't kidding. It's real. Looks great.
Just got a Funny Playing IPS for my GBA SP, and just like that the SP took back its place for GBA,GBC,GB and NES games from my PSP go.
Nice! I’m assuming you have the ez flash omega? Cheers dude!
@@MachoNachoProductions Yep, and it works like a charm, no problems what so ever in transferring the games from the psp.
It's a great flash cart for sure, I love mine!
And how convenient. I have an extra Game Boy Pocket I can do this to.
Haha, convenient indeed! Go for it dude! Cheers!
Great video as always!!!
Thanks dude! Cheers!
New subscriber, awesome intro and video!
Thank you Wayne! That means a lot! Cheers bud!
My Game Boy Pocket has been waiting for this...
Your Game Boy Pocket will thank you! It's totally worth it in my opinion! Cheers!
Magnet wire should work great. Kynar would work too.
Thanks a lot for the help bud, keep up the great work! 👍
I was actually a little impressed with the 3h+ battery life from this one.
Yeah, it's not that bad at all. Hoping for a decent battery mod at some point though. Cheers!
You make it look so easy
Great vid im still waiting om mime to come in
It should be in soon, my got held up in US Customs for a long time but eventually made it. Cheers buddy!
I'm still waiting for mine to come in. I'm going to attempt to kludge a rechargable battery into it to hopefully help with the battery life.
Nice! I wonder if there are any modders out there working on a lipo battery kit? That would so awesome! I would say battery life is the one and only downside to this kit. Cheers!
BTW, the case where the screen comes has the perfect size to keep a Game Boy Micro safe!
I have a GameBoy Pocket somewhere I would like to mod, but haven’t been able to find it since moving to our house
um... the adhesive piece is for sealing to screen so you don't get dust between the screen and the lens. It's not for alignment.
Cheers dude!
very talented creator
Thank you Retro Gaming Garage! Means a lot! Cheers buddy!
You should install a gameboy dmg retro pixels ips kit! Great video!
Thanks buddy! you've read my mind! Stay tuned, I should be making that video soon! Cheers!
Sounds good! (:
Oh man, I thought that funny playing had fixed the glitch, however I really want that ips screen for my GB pocket.
It's a great kit and the glitches don't bother me too much. I actually barely notice them. I wouldn't be surprised if FunnyPlaying releases a V2 sometime soon. Cheers bud!
Very nice, i gotta pick one up!
Do it dude! You wont be disappointed! Cheers!
I hope game boy color games can only work on a game boy pocket IPS mod pixel mode
Yep
Thanks for the video mate, I was ready to get this but the screen problems make me wanna wait for a revision. Apart from the low brightness did you notice any problem loading the everdrive? Great editing as always. Thanks!
Hey Russell! I didn't notice any issues loading my everdrive, even with the eneloops. I imagine, however, a slightly depleted battery may have trouble loading the everdrive. Cheers buddy!
Awesome video! Do you find the original screen lens not an issue given the IPS screen is slightly bigger?
Yes, the original lens seems to just barely fit the IPS. It’s a tight squeeze but I don’t have any issues. Hope this helps! Cheers!
@Macho Nacho Productions
Could you reproduce weird aretifacts on other games as well oder is it only on links awakening?
It also appears in Kirby’s dream land during the first level. It’s similar artifacting to the title screen of links awakening.
Cheers!
Macho Nacho Productions For someone who’s never soldered before? Would you say this is doable for a first project? 😬
Cheers!
Macho Nacho Productions I’m hoping it comes in soon though fingers crossed :)
I have a white border instead of black around the game screen space... did I get a faulty panel or ribbon cable?
Having issues opening up my DMG. A few of the screws have already stripped (even used the proper Y00 screwdriver)
I’ve tried all the tricks in the book: rubber bands, tape, super glue...etc. I’m out of options. Is there a screw extractor you can recommend?
So it's normally up to 10 hours but with the screen mod it only lasts an hour and a half, and that's with the sound off.
Sweeeet!
Great to hear from you dude! Hope all is well!
when i heard "when you save-" i thought he was talking about geico
I just did this mod earlier this week, but now it seems to fly through batteries in a matter of 15 minutes or so. Then the screen goes dark and starts flickering until it eventually goes dark. At first I thought it might be my rechargable batteries, but it's doing the same thing with new ones. I then took out the cable set up that controlled the color palette and it worked a bit better, but still ended up going wonky after 20 minutes. I can't figure out what the issue is, as it was working fine before the new screen. You have any thoughts on what it could be? Any help would be appreciated and thanks.
Shoot! I just rewatched the video and realized that I used regular wire instead of magnetic wire. Do you think that could be it?
So I went ahead and switched those wires to magnetic ones and the same thing is happening. It will play a few minutes before the screen gets vertical lines and then eventually goes black. However the sound will continue to play just fine. Also, it turns out that it is not draining batteries as I thought. As I just put some new Eneloops in there and they are still testing as full. I even switched out the mother board to another one and the exact same thing is happening. Not sure what could be causing this. Any thoughts?
This happened to me too and i don't know how to fix it
@@lazymonkey7965 Yeah, it doesn't make any sense.
Yeah mine is a funny playing screen and I just got it on Friday
Awsome video. I recently updated my GBC to an TFT LCFD screen and I have a GBP that needs an update. What battery size do you recomend for modding a GBP? I use for my GBC a pixel boy battery 2000mAh.
Thanks dude! I would get as large of a battery as you can fit. I wish there was a kit that would fit in the space available in the GBP, but it is a very small unit. You will need to trim a large portion of the battery well to fit a li-ion battery in there. Best of luck dude! Cheers!
Hey Tito, do you know if exists Y Screws more resistant tham the habitual?
Thanks buddy! That really means a lot! I hope the videos are helpful! Cheers!
If you don’t use the touch sensor can you still change the screen color any other way?
Hi, I have been wondering if I can use this screen without soldering, like the GBA ones, I dont mind missing out on some functions since I will me moving soon so not buying extra tools atm. Thanks
Which Krikzz cart did you use for this test specifically? The new krikzz Everdrive x7 claims it draws less power- I'm curious to test this statement.
Mine is pretty old, it’s a v1.2 cart. I’m sure the newer x7 does better I terms of power draw but I can’t say I have experience with it. No matter what I’m sure it’s a fantastic product! Cheers dude!
Ribon cable and screen same Gameboy DMG funnyplaying v3? This is a question ,
Sorry English not my main language
Great question. I’m 99% sure they are the same.
Thanks for help!!!!
continue to make better videos! From Vietnam with love
You’re welcome dude!
What is that clear yellow tape you used?
Wonder what battery life would be like if you used some rechargeable batteries like eneloop.
I'd imagine they would be just slightly worse than the alkaline batteries I tested. But the nice thing is you can always swap out the eneloops for charges ones and keep on gaming! Cheers dude!
Now it just needs an all metal shell
That would be a dream! Cheers bud!
Excellent video but.....i am disappointed with battery life. I was expecting at least 4 hours in medium brightness.
I know, me too! I’m hoping that we get a battery mod for the pocket sometime soon! That’s the only real downside to the system. Fingers crossed! Cheers buddy!
Does this mean soon or later we gonna see a GBC IPS mod using this same display?
I'm sure an update is in the works! The LCD would also probably fit a little better too! Cheers dude!
so i have my gbc, already have an shell for it on the way..im not sure of what screen to get. wanna go for a drop in but unsure of which one..any suggestions?
What if you dont solder the brightness sensor, what is the default setting?
I don’t know the exact level, but to me the default brightness is perfect!
Did the silver lens you put on originally cut off any of the screen?
Only a very small amount. Barely noticeable. The included glass lens is the perfect size. Just slightly bigger than the original. Cheers!
Ill wait for the v2. 70 bucks is not worth it for me. This happened when i bought the v1 ips screen kit for the dmg for about 90 bucks. Soon after v2 was released and for much cheaper.
That's a good idea! I'm sure there will be a v2 for this. It seems to be a popular enough! Cheers!
Is it possible to use the original lens then? It says the screen is kinda bigger.
You can but it may cutoff some of the screen image.
Why not just make shells to fit the new screen? Surely not that expensive?
I'm hoping some of the vendors like Hand Held Legend and Retro Modding do make a shell that's pre-trimmed. That would be awesome! Cheers!
Is battery life better with eneloop batteries?
gbp needs a battery mod!
Totally agree! I hope one is in the works. Cheers!
The flashcart will also not load if the battery is low.
I agree! I’m hoping someone releases a clean looking battery mod! Fingers crossed!
Also make sure that the wire is soldered correctly to power. The screen not being on might mean it’s not getting power. A wire needs to be soldered.
@@MachoNachoProductions hmmm yea I resoldered it a couple of times. But I'll check it again. Weirdly I have contacted Retro Modding twice from their site and I haven't heard from them yet.
Thank you for the advice though. Your videography, editing, and writing is top notch!
No problem! Definitely send retromodding another email. They had some technical difficulties recently and a lot of their customer service emails got lost. Check out their Twitter, they made a whole post about it. Cheers and best of luck!!
What is the kit called?🙏
