I’m so so so close to finishing my king size blanket using this stitch! I did a chain of 200!!! I’ve worked on it for a little over 50-60 hours and I’m in the home stretch!

me and my mom use to crochet, but then we stopped so we forgot, all our yarn was in a closet (we have lots) but i took it out cuz i wanna start again, your videos are so informative, you show how to change the colors, how to crochet and just how to do it, im planing on making a big comfy blanket, also i still have a tiny scarf for my stuffies, it was the first scarf i made so im gonna keep it to see how much i improved, and also (again) i learned about loosening the string, since doing tight was hard, lol
My mother taught me how to crochet first with my finger, then with a hook when I was a young girl. That was in the 70s. Now I’m 57 and my mom is 92. We have not crocheted in sooo long. Looking forward to making this blanket after re-learning from this video. Hope mom will too. We’ll see.

Just friendly critique...instead of "hook" you should say "yarn over" a lot of beginners use various sources when they're learning and I think it helps to use standard terminology. Also, your work curls because, after your first yarn over, you're not bringing your loop up to the proper height. Your hook should be more parallel to your work.

Very good work. I'm making a 250 foundation chain blanket for my guy like the one you did. What's a good border for that when I'm done I'm gonna have to do about 125 rows up and down cause he's 6'3. Please help

Hi. New subscriber here. I want to make a blanket for my daughter that is this size. The trouble I am having with the tutorials I watch is when the projects is made on a much smaller scale I am left not knowing how many actual stitches to do for the full size project. When the teacher says to chain the amount that you want the length/width to be I cannot then figure out how much of each color I will need to complete the project. Ultimately, I've gotten frustrated and don't start the project. Would you be able to tell me how many chains you did to start with for the actual size you made? And how many rows? And what size the finished blanket measures?
@Jana Schuster - I hope you have found an answer to your question as I'm reading this a year later, but maybe my answer will help someone else. I am a relatively new crocheter (only made a few baby beanies). So I'm no expert. However, this pattern can be made for any size, from premie baby blanket to California King size, thus she cannot give precise amounts. My suggestion would be to figure out how large you want your blanket to be. Since crochet is done side to side, start with your starting chain and make it as long as the width you want your blanket to be, plus a little bit. (I'd hate to put in as much work as any blanket would be and find out when I'm finished, that it's just an inch or 2 short!) Then I would do 2 rows of the half double crochet. From that I would weigh (easier) or measure (harder) the remaining yarn from the skein(s) you were using. (You can use a small kitchen scale. I got a digital one.) Subtract the weight (or length) from the original weight/length to get the amount of yarn you used for the starting chain and the 2 half double crochet rows. Then I would take a measuring tape to see how high your completed rows were, divide the length of the blanket by the height of your completed 2 rows to see how many double rows you will need to finish it. Multiply the number of double rows by the amount of yarn you used in the 2 rows at beginning of the blanket.That number should give you the approximate total amount needed. You will need to allow for some loss (changing colors and weaving in ends) when you purchase your yarn. I'm planning on getting a lot extra of each color as some yarns have dye lots (found on the label) and I don't want to run out of a color at the very end of the blanket and not be able to find the same dye lot. Sometimes it doesn't matter, as the dye lots are nearly identical, but sometimes it matters a lot as they are not even close to identical. But if the yarn of choice doesn't have a dye lot, then I won't get a huge amount extra.
When starting your foundation chain row and you tend to have small tight chains try using a hook size one or two sizes larger than the recommended size just to start the foundation chain. Once you get the foundation chain to the desired length you simply switch back to the original hook size for your project. Hope this tip might help.

I’m so excited! This is my first big project. Before now I could only make baby whale amigurimi which is fun and make great gifts but they are a one day project on average. I just finished my first row (not counting the chain). It took me an hour. This is going to be work but by the end I’ll have a blanket approximately the size of a twin comforter!!

Today I got all of my stuff to start crocheting. I clicked on your channel because you have the exact same colors as I ordered. The black is fluffier, and I started with that one, but i just couldn't get it to fit thru. I kept getting stuck. Next question is about each color pattern. Can I make all the colors, then attach them together. I've just begun this crochet journey, and I haven't even watched what to do when you want to stop the link...I listened, but I was working like heck getting my flow with...the chain I believe? I'm a relatively new crocheter, having made a few baby beanies, so I'm no expert. First of all I wouldn't suggest ever using a dark color like black or navy blue or chocolate brown or dark forest green for my first (or even my 10th) project. Been there, done that, not fun! The problem is that the darker colors are almost impossible for a beginner, or even the experts I've spoken to, to see where the individual stitches are. I've had to frog (rip out) more rows due to a missed stitch than I would like to count! Sunlight and the crochet hooks that light up are the only suggestions I've heard that seem to help. My thought with the hook getting stuck is that your tension is too tight. On another crochet video was a comment from another crocheter that her grandmother made her chain 5 chains of 100 chains each every day for 2 weeks before teaching her to crochet! Since that time she's never had a problem with tension. So I decided to try it as I was also having problems with my tension even with having done a few baby beanies. I didn't do 5 chains of 100 each for 2 weeks but I did do about 25 with 2 different yarns. I cannot believe the difference that has made! You don't have to make 5 chains of 100, cut the yarn and start all over again. While I did that a few times as I had some tiny balls of yarn, I also would crochet the chains, without tying them off, then pull out the stitches and do them over again using the same piece of yarn. Using both methods allowed me to keep a few of the cut and saved ones to compare to the ones that I did later. That's when I saw the difference. I HIGHLY suggest trying this.

Why do you go into the 3rd chain when you start the 2nd row after the foundation chain? It looks like after the second row, you always turn and go into the first chain. I’m just trying to understand what would happen if you went into the first chain after the first turn of the project.
@Becky Rosser - That would be my thought. I saw a comment on another video of a woman whose grandmother insisted that she crochet 5 chains of 100 chains every day for 2 weeks and after that she would teach her how to crochet. I'm no expert, having done a few baby beanies, so I was still having problems with my tension. I tried her suggestion, but didn't do 5 chains of 100 every day for 2 weeks (70 total), I only did around 25. But I kept a few from the first few days and compared them to the last ones and the difference was amazing! No need to waste that much yarn unless you want to. What I ended up doing was practicing with some yarn, ripping it out and doing it over again. That way I wasn't wasting (in my opinion) yarn. Hope this helps.

I am new the the crochet world, and I am learning a bunch from your videos! I have a question. Do I need to include the "bump" when completing this starting chain? I have seen both and was wondering what kind of difference it makes.
@Samantha Lynch - I'm reading this a year later, so I'm hoping you have had your question already answered. But maybe this will help someone else. I think the "bump" you are talking about is the back of the single crochet. Some crocheters call this the camel bumps. The advantage to working into the back bump only is the starting chain looks like the ending of the blanket, so it doesn't need to have a border added. However, it can be difficult for me (a relative beginner) to keep a long chain from twisting, so I use the v (which is the front of the stitch) as shown in the video. You use either/or, not both.

Ohhh I need help... when were done with the 1st chain and when we start the hook thru the 3rd V, I can do that. My issue is when you do your next double half, do I go thru the 3rd V again, the 1st? Nobody explains, they just say go thru the next hole....haaallllpppp pretty please!!! I've seemed to get more out of your channel, your voice is soothing, good pointers, and how to's, but when it's time to do the 2nd stitch, after the chain, I don't know if it's the 3rd hole, what hole must I go thru??!!!!!!!
@Amber - I'm hoping that you have found an answer to your question as it's been a year since you asked it, but maybe my answer will help someone else. The first half double crochet stitch was inserted into the 3rd stitch from the hook. The NEXT half double crochet goes into the NEXT stitch in the foundation chain (the single crochet chain you just completed). Another way of putting it is the half double crochet (abbreviation is hdc) goes into the next stitch to the LEFT of the one you just did. In this pattern, the next hdc would go into the next stitch to the left of the one you just did, repeat this until you reach the end of the row. Each pattern has different instructions on how to do each stitch and where to put them. So this process only works with this pattern. As a relatively new crocheter, I feel your pain and frustration over not knowing the exact placement of stitches or how to count them. I finally found someone who could teach me person to person, who could help me in real time. That helped a lot. Now I can understand most of what is said in these videos.

I'm a beginner and most of my chains was tight, but I was able to complete the first row. How many rows do I need to do before switch colors?
It’s really up to you and how wide you want each color to be. In this video I did five rows for each color.

You only go into the third hole when you chain, this creates your first post. Every row after you want to go into the first hole.

So I decided to try it as I was also having problems with my tension even with having done a few baby beanies. I didn't do 5 chains of 100 each for 2 weeks but I did do about 25 with 2 different yarns. I cannot believe the difference that has made!
You don't have to make 5 chains of 100, cut the yarn and start all over again. While I did that a few times as I had some tiny balls of yarn, I also would crochet the chains, without tying them off, then pull out the stitches and do them over again using the same piece of yarn. Using both methods allowed me to keep a few of the cut and saved ones to compare to the ones that I did later. That's when I saw the difference. I HIGHLY suggest trying this.

Why do you go into the 3rd chain when you start the 2nd row after the foundation chain? It looks like after the second row, you always turn and go into the first chain. I’m just trying to understand what would happen if you went into the first chain after the first turn of the project.

@Becky Rosser - That would be my thought. I saw a comment on another video of a woman whose grandmother insisted that she crochet 5 chains of 100 chains every day for 2 weeks and after that she would teach her how to crochet. I'm no expert, having done a few baby beanies, so I was still having problems with my tension. I tried her suggestion, but didn't do 5 chains of 100 every day for 2 weeks (70 total), I only did around 25. But I kept a few from the first few days and compared them to the last ones and the difference was amazing! No need to waste that much yarn unless you want to. What I ended up doing was practicing with some yarn, ripping it out and doing it over again. That way I wasn't wasting (in my opinion) yarn. Hope this helps.
Oh you taught me how to weave in the ones that are short and out of yarn ty so much have many projects like it

I'm not sure what you mean by "bump", do you mean the knot?
@Samantha Lynch - I'm reading this a year later, so I'm hoping you have had your question already answered. But maybe this will help someone else.
I think the "bump" you are talking about is the back of the single crochet. Some crocheters call this the camel bumps. The advantage to working into the back bump only is the starting chain looks like the ending of the blanket, so it doesn't need to have a border added. However, it can be difficult for me (a relative beginner) to keep a long chain from twisting, so I use the v (which is the front of the stitch) as shown in the video. You use either/or, not both.

This is my go to stitch when I can’t figure out what I want to do. The person receiving the blanket always loves it. It’s great for cold climates especially if you use a chunky 5 or 6 yarn. 🧶 Thank you for making this video!
Ohhh I need help... when were done with the 1st chain and when we start the hook thru the 3rd V, I can do that. My issue is when you do your next double half, do I go thru the 3rd V again, the 1st? Nobody explains, they just say go thru the next hole....haaallllpppp pretty please!!! I've seemed to get more out of your channel, your voice is soothing, good pointers, and how to's, but when it's time to do the 2nd stitch, after the chain, I don't know if it's the 3rd hole, what hole must I go thru??!!!!!!!
@Amber - I'm hoping that you have found an answer to your question as it's been a year since you asked it, but maybe my answer will help someone else. The first half double crochet stitch was inserted into the 3rd stitch from the hook. The NEXT half double crochet goes into the NEXT stitch in the foundation chain (the single crochet chain you just completed). Another way of putting it is the half double crochet (abbreviation is hdc) goes into the next stitch to the LEFT of the one you just did. In this pattern, the next hdc would go into the next stitch to the left of the one you just did, repeat this until you reach the end of the row. Each pattern has different instructions on how to do each stitch and where to put them. So this process only works with this pattern. As a relatively new crocheter, I feel your pain and frustration over not knowing the exact placement of stitches or how to count them. I finally found someone who could teach me person to person, who could help me in real time. That helped a lot. Now I can understand most of what is said in these videos.
